Hangs and crashes Macbook Air 1.1 OSX 10.6.6 and Mail 4.4

Mail application has slowed to a crawl on this machine with noted system configuration -- especially when loading email including images. Reloaded System and installed all posted upgrades. See no fixes on any forum sites. Suggestions?

There is a Connection Doctor on Mail which you can check.
Also, use Activity Monitor in Utilities and check at each of the options. You may have exceeded the actual capacity for the hard drive or the cpu at the time.

  • Macbook Air with no OSX (Mid 2011) ... cannot install Lion nor Snow Leopard

I have a Macbook Air with no OSX (Mid 2011) ... and I cannot install Lion nor Snow Leopard.
I purchased this Macbook Air 13" and found that the OS had been wiped off. Since then I've been able to get the Recovery Disk Assistant to get me into the Recovery Partition on the MBA... but when I try the "Reinstall Mac OS X" from within Mac OS X Utilities, the download fails after 30 sec. and I get the error message, "Could not find installation information for this machine. Contact Apple Care". This MBA is still covered under Apple's Applecare, but the nearest Apple Store is 3 hrs away and from what I've read, they may not be able to help me.
I know all about Build 11A2063 but cannot figure out where or how to get that.
Also, I've tried making a bootable Lion Drive from my Mac Mini onto a flashdrive, but this too did not work on the MBA (I assume because it isn't Build 11A2063).
I have a huge expensive paper weight with no idea of where to go from here. Any help would be much appreciated.

Where did you buy an MBA without an operating system?  Was this from another individual who took the liberty to remove the Mac OS X before selling it to you?
You might try calling Apple customer support and have them walk you through the process, as they can figure out just what version of the OS should be on that machine.

  • MacBook Air mid-2013 OSX 10.9.1 cannot connect to DVI Monitor

Does anyone else have this problem?  I've seen similar issues raised, but so far can't find a solution to my particular issue:
MacBook Air Mid 2013 (ordered Jan 2014)
    - 1.3GHz Intel Core i5
    - 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
    - OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks.
When I connect my MacBook Air to any monitor (well, I've tried three monitors: Benq, NEC and Samsung) the monitor will not detect an attached computer. The MacBook also does not think it's connected to an external display.
If I connect via VGA cable, it works fine most of the time*, so the display port seems to work only for VGA and not DVI.
I am using mini display port adapters (DVI and VGA) purchased from the Apple Store.
The adapter for the mini display to DVI works fine, since I can get my 2009 MacBook unibody to connect to an external display via DVI without issue. So it's not the adapter, or the DVI cable.
I have tried resetting the System Management Controller for my MacBook air but it does not work.  No matter how many times I reset the computer (Hard reset, Soft power down, SMC reset) I cannot get it to connect via DVI.
Has anyone experienced this issue, or seen a resolution for it?
*The only other symptom I get periodically, is that after being disconnected from a VGA monitor, the computer will periodically (about 2/5 times) not connect to the VGA monitor either without a reboot.   However it will connect most of the time, and ALL of the time after a reboot.
    Thank you

Thanks themachead: I have tried the adaptors on different macs, as I indicated in my post.  The adaptor works fine with a different mac
Yes, I have also tried starting up with the monitor connected, and disconnected.
I just got off the phone with Apple Care. They couldn't solve my issue through normal means, but during one attempt, we closed my MacBook Air while it was connected to the external display, with my Magic Mouse and Apple Keyboard connected via Bluetooth.  The external monitor did not come on.  However when I opened my Macbook Air's screen, we saw that my Mac had crashed and prompted me to reboot. When it did, the external monitor worked.  I have been able to disconnect and reconnect the monitor and it seems to be working now.   I will see what happens after a few attempts.

  • Time machine crashes macbook air 2011

    Hello,
I'm using Macbook Air 2011 13 inches and running Lion 10.7.2
I'm trying to use time machine on an external hard drive.
But the time machine always crashes the whole computer while I leave the computer unattended for 2 or 3 hours. When I keep using it, it can perform hourly backup without any problem. Once i decide to leave my macbook unattended for over 2 hours, when coming back, the whole system crashes at the stage of backing up 0 KB of XX MB. I put the log below. I have changed the external driver so it is not the external hard disk that generates this problem.

  • Macbook air issues with osx mavericks - screen goes blank

I have a late 2010 MacBook Air 11".  When I open the screen several time during the day, the system hangs and the screen goes blank.  I usually have to reboot several times to get the Mac to come back.  Any ideas as to what is happening.

The keyboard and trackpad reside on top of the motherboard and all the components of the computer.  The keyboard and trackpad are not liquid proof.  It is VERY likely that the liquid made its way to the motherboard and has affected those components.  If EVER there is liquid spilled on a computer, the last thing you want to do is A. Turn it on to make sure it is working.. and B. Plug it in and charge it.  Do the EXACT opposite.  Unplug and turn off all power, and, if possible, remove the battery from it.  The liquid itself doesnt do the damage...the damage is done when the liquid comes in contact with the circuits and shorts out the contacts and components.  You could try to connect to an external monitor, if you have the means to do so, to see if it makes a difference, but it probably will not.  I seems that the motherboard is not functioning correctly.

  • WIFI Packet Loss/Jitter MacBook Air 11 & LION OSX 10.7.1

I started using computers more than 30 years ago when I was 5, I had my first IBM PC at the age of 10 and have never had any interest in paying over the odds for an Apple mac mainly because I saw the Mac as a kind of "Can't open nothing", one mouse buttoned retard of the computer world.
    That is, until now.
I set up an online business 3 years ago and rented a dedicated server and set the whole business up in a cloud, so to speak. Having done that, all I needed a laptop for was a remote desktop connection and to run a SIP phone (Internet phone).
My PC based laptops had almost nothing installed on them, and I wasn't using software on the laptop itself, I was using remote desktop, so - why not try a MAC? The new Macbook Air 11 is small, light and made of metal and glass so should be robust enough to travel with me.
I have to say, this was the worst move I've ever made.
I opened the new shiny macbook and the first thing I noticed was that the internet seemed hit and miss. Moving around the room I managed to find a spot whereby pages woud load quickly. Strange, my £200 acer laptop was sh.t fast everywhere in the house. No matter, I packed it back away and carried on working on the Windows machine.
I've come to Newquay this week, and i've started to try and use the Macbook again in a hotel. The wireless signal in the room is low, and speedtest shows about 1 meg down and 3/4 meg up. That may sound bad to you, but remote desktop uses about 5k/sec (modem dial up speed) and the softphone, well, my Asterisk VOIP setup is confugured to use the GSM codec so that's 8k/sec each way + overheads.
This whole setup was deliberately designed to be "thin" so I can travel with ease and work on bad connections like USB internet sticks.
Anyhow, the Macbook was unable to hold a stable connection to the remote desktop or SIP phone, even though the speed test showed a whopping 1 meg up and down. What you may not be aware of is that there is more to a connection than the speed, there is the quality as well. How many packets are lost / how much "jitter" is on the line.
Anyhow, we're not living in the 3rd world, I ran a PINGTEST and it showed a small amount of jitter but told me the line was class B, online games may suffer but voip should be fine.
I unpacked the Acer, placed it in exactly the same spot as the Apple had sat in and it worked beautifully with 1 bar of wireless signal, all day long. Phone calls were clear.
So you know now what I'm thinking. I'm sitting here with my £200 acer because I can't use the £1500 macbook air 11. I paid nearly sixteen hundred pounds for this piece of .... and it doesn't ...... work. Time to contact Apple support.
    2nd Mistake!
Representitive 1: - Told me that I can't compare the Macbook Air to the Acer, the Acer has Google Chrome and everybody knows Google Chrome is the fastest browser. I was told there was nothing more he could do, its probably a bad line at the hotel. When I explained the Acer works fine for voip I was told well, maybe it is getting a better signal. I explained the Acer has the cheapest possible parts inside it and paid 1500 for this macbook, expecting it to have quality parts inside and was told I'd paid for the size, because its so small but its not considered "powerful". Apple do you train your staff? Clearly not.
Thank god I wasn't paying to talk to this moron.
Representitive 2: - Had no idea what packet loss or Jitter was, got me to do a speedtest and said that looks fine. Then he got me to remove the WIFI adapter and re add it in the network settings.
Guess what, nothing changed, its still the same hardware and software.
Representitive 3: - Still not really understanding "quality" issues with the networking interface, I was asked to install the latest Java client. I did it, only because I wanted to comply with Apples wishes so they'd help me, but they weren't helping and Java has nothing to do with the network adapter, so that was useless advice too.
Apple seem to have no idea there is a problem, even though Google has pages and pages of people saying the same as me, and their own discussion forums have thousands of people complaining https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2664670?start=0&tstart=0
Finally, late yesterday whilst speaking to d.ck head number 3 at Apple support, we found a forum post talking about a fix, 10.7.1 update. I told d. head number 3 about the update and he suggested I applied it. So I did and everything looked great, for a whole evening.
This morning, I switched on again and the same thing, slow remote desktop, choppy unusable phone. Remember the phone needs less than 20k for a conversation, thats 0.2 meg. Speedtest again showing a whole meg both ways.
I called apple support again, this time being a little forceful, and I've asked for this to be escalated, but the bottom line is - they have no fix, they don't aknowledge this as a problem and I was told LION is new, so maybe it's got a bug..
I told the guy on the phone this is a network driver issue, the intermittency of the problem shows that and the Apple's lack of settings for the network adapter means the unit is autonegotiating with the router and choosing speed and duplex settings on its own. Sometimes it does that correctly, other times not and the connection although fast has a lot of noise / packet loss / corruption.
I've found a workaround, you put the unit to sleep and wake it up again and it runs fast until the next shutdown. Not really acceptable seeing as I was paying for "the cream of the crop".
I will definately not be recommending Apple products, and i'll certainly not be replacing the Windows laptops in my business with Apple's toytown system- i'd go out of business if I had to rely on this.
All there is left now, is to look at Boot camp and see if I can wipe this waste of space linux hack from the unit and install Windows 7.

I started using computers more than 30 years ago when I was 5, I had my first IBM PC at the age of 10 and have never had any interest in paying over the odds for an Apple mac mainly because I saw the Mac as a kind of "Can't open nothing", one mouse buttoned retard of the computer world.

  • External Hard drive will not mount on Macbook Air (mid-2011) OSX 10.9.4

    Hello Everyone!
Needs some help resolving this issue.  External hard drive (Toshiba v63600-C) will not mount anymore on my mothers-in-law's macbook air.  She notice this problem starting on the Aug 6th.  You can see it in the Disk Utility but is not mounted.  I can get the her ext hard drive to mount on my Macbook Pro with no problem.  I also tried my personal ext hard drive (Seagate) on her Macbook Air and it will not mount.  Not sure what is going on here.  Any help is appreciated in resolving this issue.
    Disk Utility
Mount Point : Not mounted  Capacity : 1 TB (1,000,096,367,104 Bytes)
Format : Windows NT Filesystem (Tuxera NTFS)  Available : -
      Owners Enabled : -  Used : -
Number of Folders : -  Number of Files : -
    Actions Taken So Far:
    1) Confirmed "external disk" is selected under Finder's Preference
    2) Reset PRAM
    3) Ran Verify Disk and Repair Disk under Disk Utility with no change.
    4) Tried manually mounting disk in Disk Utility but get "Mount Failed" error

You may believe this is Apple's problem but I just like Baltwo have had absolutely no problems with any of my Firewire drives in Lion. So unless you can come up with much stronger evidence to the contrary, I doubt that your feeling are going to carry any weight at all.

  • Installing Windows 7 on Macbook Air W/O OSX

    Hi guys,
Long time reader, first time poster.
I do heaps of work on Windows servers, etc so unfortunately I need to run Windows all the time for that. I have just purchased a new Macbook air Which arrives on monday. Ideally I would like to run only Windows 7 on this so as to not waste HDD space etc.
    Is this at all possible?
    Thanks

    Yes.
Might want to clone and put Mac OS X on a small external drive.
There are reviews on a number of sites of MBA as a Windows only computer, hardware and industry and review sites.
    Vista on first MBA:
    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mobile/display/apple-macbook-air_7.html
    http://www.bing.com/search?q=macbookair+windows7
You will need to have OS X to download some Apple drivers first and read the guide, so get familiar and have a game plan and walk it through trial run in your head so to speak.
Look here for a couple articles and pdf guide to get started, there are special considerations for the Air and using USB DVD.

  • My Macbook Air 2010 on OSX 10.9.5 won't show Airplay tab

I'm trying to connect my 2010 Macbook Air to my Apple TV (on the same WIFI network) and the icon won't show up.
I have updated both the apple tv software and my computer software and restarted both..
I have been to my system preferences->Display-> checked the "show mirroring options" box.....but no apple tv option ever appears.
    Can anyone offer any suggestions?
    Thanks for your advice!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.

  • My macbook air will not restart, because it says the "mail" cancels  the restart, but I can not quit mail.

How can I get my Macbook air to restart? Each time I try to restart my laptop, I am unable to because it says "mail cancels the restart". However I am unable to quit mail. Please Help.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Can't get any audio ("no input or output devices") on MacBook Air, running MAC OSX 10.8.5

This happened today completely out of the blue.
I have tried some of the other suggestions posted here and other forums. I did a Disk Utility check and nothing seems wrong with the hard disk,
    Rebooted 3 times.
    Re-set the PRAM
Tried headphones (still no response from either audio volume key, as both show a circle with line through it,
and tried System Preferences on Sound, but I get the same message (no devices).
Tried to locate the preferences file called BezelServices that others have talked about, but can't find it...

I haven't tried it myself, but I do plan to in the near future, as I dont want to shell out major bucks for a new control surface/interface.

  • I try shutting down my MacBook Air but it wont let because the application "Mail" is still open but it will not let me close Mail so i can shutdown my computer

I try shutting down my mac but it says that it cant because "Mail" is open. so i try quitting mail but it will not let me!

Force quit Mail app. Apple logon in the menu bar select Force Quit. A dialog window will open select Mail.app and click the force quit button.
If that doesn't work hold down the power button until the system turns off. Then press it again to restart your Mac.

  • Macbook Air. Unable to send or receive e mails.

We have just changed from EE broadband to BT Infinity. Coincidently, the same day I could no longer receive e mails.  EE say this is nothing to do with them, BT say it is nothing to do with them. I am a complete techno phobe and have now played around with so many settings that not only can I not receive emails. I can no longer send e mails. I wish to keep the email address I had when I set up the EE account as this is the address I have used for years.

  • My friend have new Macbook Air with OSX Mavericks and I have Macbook Pro with OSX Mountain Lion, Can I create a bootable maverick in pendrive from macbook air and perform a clean installation/update on my macbook pro with osx mountain lion?

I have late 2012 edition Macbook Pro, I have a internet connection with does not run smoothly It gets disconnected and reconnects Thus I failed everytime when I update my OSX Mountain Lion to Mavericks in App Store. My friend just bought 2013 end Macbook Air whicch have OSX Mavericks pre installed.
I was hoping if I can create a OS X version in pendrive from his laptop and use that to install and thuss also update OS on my Mountain Lion.
Kindly explain me in detail how to perform this.
I have already taken back up of all files and I am ready to total clean my laptop.
And I want to update to Maverick so I can thus further update to upcoming OS X Yosemite.

The Mavericks on the Air is probably machine specific since it came pre-installed, so it wouldn't work on your computer. See if your friend will let you access the App Store, where you can sign in using your Apple ID and download the installer. You can use this free program to copy the installer and update your computer.
