HangTime: My new SM57 Shure mic, new XLR cable, FireBox preamp & GB2

Hangtime
In case you missed my post, everything seems to be working fine. The problem with not getting any real volume into GB2 via my new mic was apparently the simplest of things. After spending about five hours of investigating everything...following numerous back-and-forths to Apple discussions.....looked at the mic, found that the mic itself was not screwed together tightly, tightened it, and everything worked.
Question, I am so impressed with the new Shure mic that I'm considering getting another one. Although they will be few and far between, there are situations when two of us would be recording simultaneously via external mic. Problems is, how do we monitor what we would be playing via headphones. FireBox has on jack for headphones. Could another work going into the computer mic jack? Would seem unlikely since while recording, inputs/outputs are set to FireBox.
And, as always, many thanks to you for all of your help.

I had a Shure SM57 with GRIFFIN GarageBand Microphone Cable (3105-XLR) and plug into the Audio line-in port on the back of my G5. Well, didn't ring the bell. I've checked all the settings and they were correct. Only had a very small input level when I tap the mic. I am sure that the mic is fine, brand new.
But when I played my Ovation guitar with GRIFFIN guitar cable and plug directly into the audio line-in port, it sounds great. Is it because the preamp on the guitar?
Do I really need a preamp for Shure mic? Any suggestion? Please.
Thank you , thank you, thank you.
The mic signal is weaker than the guitar signal (as you're finding out!), and needs some amplification to enter GB with a strong enough signal. Generally, microphones require amplification to make their signals hot enough to properly record.
Since you're dealing with at least guitar and voice, you might want to consider a modest audio interface from a company like M-Audio or Presonus that would sort out your different types of signals, properly amplify your microphone with an onboard mic preamp, and also sound better than plugging directly into the Mac.
While many professional recordings that use the SM57 actually send it through preamps costing thousands of dollars, a modest audio interface that would do the trick wouldn't cost much more than the mic.

  • Why has my native windows 7 Pro-64 network to a windows 7 Pro-64 VM has slowed to a crawl and freezes, after the new Arris cable modem was installed?

Please appreciate the details, so the complete situation can be visualized:
    The office network:
New Mac Mini PC running Win 7Pro 64, (in boot camp), networked to an iMac running the same Win 7 Pro 64, VM, UNDER Fusion 7Pro.
To review: My treatment rooms former dell PC/running vista business/ running the server and network versions of my Dental practice mgmt & X-ray capture apps, had no probs WLAN to the front desk iMac running the same PC client dental network apps under the same vista business, & Fusion 4. The dell slowly fried its power supply .
I could not wait to replace it with a Mac mini/ boot camp/ win7 pro 64 bit, as it has to run natively to capture X-rays. The front desk iMac was also upgraded to os10.10.3/ Fusion 7pro/ and its own matching Win7 pro 64bit. The iMac is wired and WLAN connected to a netgear d600 router and a Time Warner Cable  modem. The modem then failed and was replaced by an arris modem. As the Arris was configured out of the box, the network ran much slower slowed, as compared to the original modem. BUT-  The Vonage 2 line phone system stopped working- no incoming or outgoing voices could be heard after it rang. Then twc remote configured it and the phone now works, but the network iMac slowed to a crawl, and now freezes when accessing the Mac Mini PC dental server to edit or enter data. The Mini perfectly accesses the internet via wifi. It accesses the front desk canon  printer by wifi, and can print share they the iMac that is wired to the printer, as well, BUT, the network connection is a spinning pinwheel. The front desk imac easily finds the Mac Mini PC server on the network. It connects easily by entering the servers IPv4 address SHOULD THAT last value change.  But if data isn't entered in slow motion, the window and app freezes, and has to be force quit by Task Manager!
    Cause:
    1. I think TWC switched the cable modem from the default- Non Bridged, to Bridged mode. Could this be the cause?
    2. The network setting in fusion, on the iMac is auto detect, a setting that always worked with vista and with the new Win7 system, before TWC installed the new arris modem. 3. Switching to NAT does not work at all is there a different setting to use?
    3. Does the Netgear Router  have to have a port or pref configured so as not to block the  Server.
    4. might in need an Access Point (I have an extra netgear wdr3400) ).
    5. Do I need an Extender that plugs into the AC LINE?
    I hope this info helps.
    PS:(some addtl info:
    1. File sharing works fine between the minis -Mac and boot camp sides and between the iMacs- Mac and VM sides and between eother side to or from either of the 2 computers! 2. Also  either office computer and all of my my home macs , (& my iPad, & iPhone), can access each other instantly and flawlessly, with splash top streamer and jump desktop remote apps, as controller or as client!  In fact, the front desk iMac can remote control the mini PC AS IF YOU WERE DIRECTLY ENTERING INFO I TO IT!
SO I think it's either a misconfiguration in the TWC cable modem  &/or some additional pref to config in the router? Thanks so much for your help, (been using VM's since VPC1. & Win95 in a iMac, 1999, DV MODEL! (TWC BLAMES VONAGE FOR NOT OPENING SOME PORTS IN THE TELE MODEM. Vonage blames TWC FOR NOTopeningj ITS PORTS IN THE CABLE MODEM, when they meant the ports on the Netgear.  They have passed the buck for 6 weeks with not even a guess at what to do. VERY FRUSTRATING!  Again, thanks to all!

    Okay Saint Steven, I'll bite:
I read your description multiple times, very carefully, and I am still confused. May I suggest the following:
    * Follow basic troubleshooting procedures. Isolate each individual problem. Don't try to get everything working at once. Make one change at a time.
    * If I read your description correctly, the Netgear D600 (??) Router is the office LAN (not WLAN). Connect each piece on the LAN separately one-by-one, and test each piece individually. Get your LAN and its devices working first. Forget about the Vonage and the Arris Cable modem.
    * Next, look at your Internet connection. Again, try each piece separately. Depending on how the original cable modem and the new Arris cable modem are configured, you may also have to adjust the configuration of the Netgear D600 Router.
    * Finally, if you are still having problems, try to organize your thoughts and presentation before you post again. List each element in your network. List how each element is configured. Be systematic.
"Arris cable modem" does not help much - some are simple bridges, others are routers, etc.
    To answer your questions:
    1. I can't tell from your confusing description, but I don't think so. It seems like the problems are associated with the system changes you made (replacing Dell, etc.) and the problems seem to be isolated to the local LAN.
    2. Auto detect should work, but it is easy to change and test, as long as you change one thing at a time.
    3. No. The Netgear router should allow all communications on the local LAN. Could you have put the "server" in the DMZ?
Note: I could not find a Netgear "D600" model in a web search. Do you mean N600?
    4. No. I doubt that you need an additional access point. Based on your description, everything appears to connect to the LAN.
    5. No. See 4.
    To repeat myself:
    * Do careful, systematic troubleshooting.
    * Provide carefully written, detailed description of your network and system configurations when you ask for help.
    Good luck!

I have over 5 USB cable chargers from apple products that I have brought this year. All the USB cables have started to fray at both ends and all are Not working and they look old like I have had them for years. I am using a USB cable that I have had for 3 years that you click  in both ends to get the USB cable out and it works great and still looks new the new USB cables look so old compared to the one that I have had for 3 years. Before anyone get on here and says that I must be rough with the cords I have a USB cable cord for 3 years and it is in perfect condition so that answer it self.
Has anyone else had the same problem

OK.  You merely erased the content and settings.  The IOS is still there.
If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures.  From what you've already stated, my guess is that you'll end up with Recovery Mode described in the last paragraph.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

I am having trouble with the initial connection of the apple tv. I have isolated the problem to the cable/connection. My new hdmi cable has a resolution up to 1080p...does the resolution matter?is this the right hdmi cable for the apple tv?

There are only two types of HDMI cables (standard and high speed - listen to all 1.2, 1.3 etc etc nonsense they will try to tell in the store) both types will work with the Apple TV.
The cable may be faulty though, have you got another to try, what exactly is happening.

  • Can I buy a new power cable?

My MacBook power cable is falling appart; the plastic is wearing away and it will only charge when it's positioned in certain ways. I was wondering if there was anyway I could buy a new power cable for my MacBook and how much it would cost. I would really appreciate it if I could get a new one for relatively cheap.

You can get a new third party 60W power adapter on eBay for under $20.

  • Having Trouble getting airport to connect to new comcast cable modem

Help,  I'm been at this for 2 days now.  I don't know why I'm having so much trouble.   I'm trying to transfer from DSL to  comcast cable modem and running into lots of problems getting everything to work.
I can't get my airport extrreme to talk to my new comcast cable modem.  I've tried everything, restart the modem, restart and reset the airport.  chaning out cables, ensuring the green light is at the cable connection of the modem and the airport.
I can find two issues I can't resolve.  one, the 10.0.0.1 webpage for the modem/router doesn't response, pings fail to 10.0.0.1. Yet, my computer is talking to the internet nicely using an ethernet cable to this cable modem.  I've talked to comcast for hours, to many different people, over Many hours, and they either say the box is working or hang up on me or transfering me to nowhere land.
The airport never goes to a green front light, and airport utility and always dispay an empty  IPv4 address.  I've tried everything, and can't get the airport to renew it's DHCP license.
Where am I going wrong?  I've search the web, and tried the solutions I found.  Is my 3 year old airport too old? or is my comcast box bad? I checked the airport firmware and I'm on the latest version.
After getting this working, I still have an OOMA to transfer over to the comcast modem.  Am I kidding my self?  Help please.
    selina

ok, answering my own question, Turns out, there are three ways to do a hard reset on my airport extreme.  Only the last method worked.  The easy reset, from the  Airport utility menu ( clicking the restore default setting) didn't make my airport talk to the new comcast cable modem.  The second way, by pressing the reset button while power up didn't work. The harder third way, hold in the reset button and then plugging in the power cord did work.  and the airport is now playing nicely with cable modem.   I wasted how many hours before reading this method in the apple support pages ?  and then remember doing this trick once many years ago.
I also wasted a few hours trying to get ooma to talk  on the new cable modem, and the hard reset key for OOMA to play nicely with a new modem can be complicated. This method requires it to be connected and working (  plug ooma tele into the older DSL network), hook a phone to it, dial  * # * # 0 9 9, (star, pound, star, pound then 099) and saying yes.    That reset it to factory settings letting it reconfigure itself to a new modem gateway.
I still can't get into the gateway web page 10.0.0.1 to change the admin password, Don't advertise that. I get  no reply to request or to pings.  I think some comcast rep changed a port setting so I can't reach it.  So I have an open wireless connection and unprotected.
I hate switching my network provider. Now I need to write it all down, for when I get fed up with comcast and decide to move to another provider.

  • Is analog audio out supported using the new lightning cable adapters ?

Is analog audio out supported using the new lightning cable adapters ?

Yes.  Both adapters (the .2m adapter and small adapter with no cable) have built in DACs just for that purpose.
For more information, read this story.  It's a little long but it will explain in further detail:

I personally have a speaker dock thing from iHome.  It uses analog audio.  I have tried it with both types of adapters and it works perfectly.

Go to Finder>Preferences>General and make sure that all four items are checked.  It's considered an external disk.  It should show up then.

  • M-Audio USB + Shure Mic + GarageBand =FRUSTRATION please help!

    Hi everyone,
Problem: My new M-Audio Fast Track USB interface isn't working for me. I've got it and a Shure microphone and I work in Garage band.
I installed the M-Audio software and drivers. In system preferences as well as GarageBand's preferences, I set the audio in and out to the Fast Track. I plugged in the Fast Track into my MacBook Pro's USB. The power indicator lit up.
I then plugged the mic into the guitar jack in the back of the interface using the proper fitting. The mic light didn't light up. I turned the mic's gain knob allll the way up and it barely flickered indicating a mic signal. I put my headphones into the FastTrack, created a new real audio track in GarageBand and tried recording. Test, test, test. I played it back and it was just static.
What's going wrong here? There was some speculation that the M-Audio didn't want to work with GarageBand. I tried installing the ProTools free trial that came with the FastTrack to see where the error was (GarageBand and M-Audio working together OR the unit itself.) No luck. Each time I clicked Pro Tools, the black curtain slowly descended and my computer shut down.
I'd really appreciate some help! Thanks everyone!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   it kinda rules.

I then plugged the mic into the guitar jack
