Hard core newb seeks advice

Hello everyone, Right now I have a programmer building a database for a website application that I have designed. I am now tasked with developing a front end HTML page for this site to connect with the database. This page will involve a map of the US with a set of three figures (0/0/0) on every state. Each of these figures will be updated constantly by the database. I'm trying to use ICEfaces AJAX push technology to accomplish this. So far I have downloaded and installed Java Studio Creator and the ICEfaces plugin. I have a jpeg of the US which I would like to use to create a HTML file containing a set of figures utilizing this technology. At the moment I only have a project started with folders chosen. I am totally new to programming of any sort and I would really appreciate any feedback at all. Thank you very much.

Actually, I shouldn't say that I am totally absolutely new to programming...I mean I grew up having to enter DOS commands to play Doom if that counts for anything...I've played around with (struggled) with different linux stuff in the past...did manage to get a basic VPN running that involved some compiling...anyway, I'm at the point now where I have eclipse installed on my OS X 3.4 machine, and I'm struggling to get some Tomcat action installed so that I can check out this example project that has been graciously provided me by someone...it's an ICEfaces demo, and hopefully this Tomcat tutorial I'm working on now will pan out soon so that I can get to the next stage.

MacBook Pro hard drive upgrade - seeking advice

I want to upgrade my 320 GB hard drive to something bigger - 750GB? Preferable WD. 7200 RPM, for Final Cut Pro, Motion, etc. Or maybe SSD? My MacBook Pro has SATA II, 3GB.
I have upgraded hard drives before in my Mac Pro but I notice on my MacBook Pro it has 2 additional partitions with system back-up stuff which looks important. Any advice on the best way to go about this. I could use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy my existing 320 GB drive onto the new drive mounted in a USB or FW800 drive dock. But then I would just be copying all the disorder onto my new drive.
Could I install Lion onto the new drive, mounted externally (FW800), and then use migration assistant to move all my apps over?
I really dread the thought of completely starting over with a clean install. It would take forever with all the apps I have.
Also please note: I'm on a rural satellite internet connection with a 65 MB/hour download limit so it isn't practical to simply re-download everything.
I have been thinking about this for a while so some additional input would be greatly appreciated.

Newbie seeks advice on importing to iMovie from JVC Everio

Hi there,
While I'm an old hand at the Mac - I really have little experience of AV applications and cams. I am very interested in buying a JVC Everio GZ-MC 500 or MC 200 Digital Media Camera, but just found out that I cannot import movie outputs into iMovie. Since MicroDrive technology seems like the way of the future I'd like to stick to the JVC. Is there any work around to this problem?
I have iLife 05 with iMovie HD installed and have just downloaded QT7 with Pro upgrade on the way. Does the MPEG 2 component solve this situation?
Any assistance to this would be a great help.

My experience with microdrives (..incidentally, Clive Sinclair used the name 'Microdrive' for the tape storage devices he sold for his original 1980s home computers ..about 20 feet of videotape wound into an endless loop in a teeny plastic housing, rather like a miniature 8-track cartridge ..they were also used in the ancient British ICL 'One-Per-Desk' under licence from Sinclair: those two slots along the top are microdrive slots.. Oops ..sorry; where was I..?) ..is that they're unreliable. CF cards are better. But how much video can you store on a CF card, and at what price?
Microdrives need a moment to run up to speed, and constantly starting and stopping them - as I've done with, for instance, a Sony F828 stills camera - I find that the drive gets confused about whether it should be saving or accessing ..and just stops working. Same thing has happened to me with a microdrive in various other devices. So I don't trust them any more. I've used various sizes (340Mb, 1Gb, 2.2Gb) and I always cross my fingers: some have stopped working completely; others have had to be reformatted as DOS, and then formatted as Mac HFS+ ..and I've found them to be more trouble than they promise to be worth. Imagine suddenly losing all your video after you'd just shot about 46 minutes' worth.. Weddings? Argghh! The bride and groom would be so disappointed ..and so would you!
There are various programs which will read MPEG-2 footage (..including the audio: iMovie will play the video 'natively', but often without the sound..) such as Streamclip. That'll convert MPEG footage into proper QuickTime, which iMovie can handle. So you could connect your microdrive(s) to your Mac, copy the footage, squirt it through Streamclip, then edit it.
However, be aware that the quality of the footage may not be as high as material recorded with proper miniDV (or Digital-8) tapes because of the nature of the Everio's recording/compressing/storing routine. The specification - on that page mentioned by 'L', above - shows that the Everios record in the same format as DV "NTSC (720x480) 4:2:0 PAL (720x576) 4:2:0" but - not having tried one - I dunno if the final appearance ..once the video's been 'unscrambled' from MPEG-2 format into something iMovie compatible, then saved back to tape or hard disc.. is as good as DV. It might be even better [..HDV hi-def is saved as MPEG-2..] but I couldn't say.
But DO be careful about microdrives ..ask a few Everio owners before putting down your money and buying one. And how does the price of a microdrive compare with a 60 minute miniDV tape?

Newbie seeking advice

OK guys - I'm a "new convert" to the Apple life. I am a professor in an advanced nursing program, so just wanted to know what "can't do without" programs you can recommend. I have already purchased and installed Adobe Acrobat (every assignment must be a pdf file - and I grade and return them on-line) and the Microsoft Office suite for Mac. What else do you believe that I need as a new Apple person?

Preview, a PDF program, actually already comes installed on your Mac. Was there a specific feature you bought Acrobat for?
For Office I personally prefer the iWork Suite (Pages for Word Processing, Numbers for Spreadsheets and Keynote for Presentations). Office may be easier for you if you're switching over from Windows, though.
What did you typically do on your PC so we can recommend apps that are comparable for the Mac? I prefer Safari for my internet browsing. I use [Things|http://culturedcode.com/things> as a simple but powerful to do list. I find [1Password|http://agilewebsolutions.com/onepassword] an indispensable password manager worth every penny. Perhaps you don't even know you needed it until you start using it. IMHO one of the best application ever developed for the Mac platform. I'll post back if I think of anything else!

Seeking advice for backing up Xserve G5 w/ RAID PCI card

Hello all!
I'm a newbie to Macs and server admin, and I have inherited the job of setting up a server at work for file storage. I'll do my best to give a concise description of our set-up - I'm looking for some advice on the last few odds and ends... mainly how we can backup the system.
We bought an Xserve G5 with an option RAID PCI card. We have 3 500GB drives in the Xserve, configured to RAID 5 (giving us effectively 1TB of storage space). We will be using the server for data storage. About 20 computers will access the server over a network; we are using an assortment of Macs and PCS.
I am seeking advice on backup systems for the server. In the event that the RAID5 fails, we don't want to lose our data. We just need a snapshot of the server; we don't need to archive data or to take the HD offsite. Our old server just used Retrospect to run incremental backups every night (with a complete clean backup once a month). Our current thought is to attach large external hard drive to our admin computer (not the server directly) and run nightly backups as before.
The major points I have are:
-Any thoughts on reliable 1 TB external drives?
-Any recommendations on software that can backup from a RAID over a network? I found info for Retrospect Server 6.0 - it seems to do what we want, but is rather pricey.

We all started out as newbies at one time or another-no worries. That is why we are here.
I personally use the Lacie branded drives. They are sturdy and reliable. My only thoughts here are to have at least three external drives-one for today's backup, one for a backup stored securely nearby, and one to be securely stored off-site. Rotate the drives daily so that your worst-case scenario will be a catastrophe that requires you to use a three-day old backup, depending upon how old your off-site backup is. Not ideal but better than the alternative. External drives are cheap enough these days to allow you to do this at a reasonable cost. Plus it is easy enough to throw one in a briefcase and tote it home for safety (just don't lose it!)
I would stay away from Retrospect. If you search these forums you will find several instances of folks having some serious issues with the program. I use a program called Carbon Copy Cloner that does the job nicely for my basement server. There are ways to do the backups via the command line interface as well but I am not so familiar with those commands. You may have to dig a little deeper to find something that works for you.
One of the other advantages of the FW external drive is that you can share it with other users, so perhaps you can set things up to have your network backups to go to that drive. Tis a thought.

Seeking advice: moving universe between systems

I've been spending some time trying to work through the Business Objects documentation to try and understand what's involved in migrating a Universe from a non-SQL Server based system to a SQL Server based system.
I'm seeking advice not having used Business Objects as I am attempting to estimate the work involved for a customer who currently uses BO. I don't know whether it's just a simple exercise of changing the database connection, or whether more work is involved. I've tried to get this information through SAP formally, but not currently being a BO customer they've refused to answer any questions.
During the course of the migration of the underlying data tables, some columns in some tables have changed their data-type (e.g., from smalldatetime to datetime, or changes in length/precision). I'm also not sure if the tables have changed name: in the old system, they are named in a SQL type manner (i.e. <prefix>.<tablename>) however in SQL Server the objects will be placed in a database named <prefix> with each table being named <tablename>.
Would this potentially require a full drop of every object in the Universe, or could this exercise be achieved without having to remove and re-add any objects by saying "this object in the Universe is now this object in the database".
Any advice welcome.

Hi Chris,
The universe is quite a simple tool in that it maps the sql directly to objects. So if the universe points to a table name that is no longer present, you wil get an error in the report, or when you check the integrity of the universe (tools, check integrity)
The standard formats will move accross without an issue, however it is possible to use vendor specific code in objects. So for instance I could write
nvl(my_table.my_col, 0) in Oracle
or
IsNull(my_table.my_col, 0) in MS SQL.
If you objects contain these defintions then your job is going to get harder.

There are lots of documents in SDN and other forums which will give much better idea ... but these are my observation
Installation - Once you have gone past the access process to the cloud environment, after that you can hardly differentiate whether you are on doing a install on cloud or non-cloud. Though definately the time to get the infrastructure for install is much faster.
Windows or Linux - I would put it as windows or Unix, not sure how many providers offer other flavors of Unix apart from Linux. But obviously the Product itself to some extent will govern what you choose, as has been the case in non-cloud env.
Database - Again have seen Oracle and DB2 being mostly used. Not sure why, may be stuff like doing system refresh in 15 min , etc are easier to achieve with products like Oracle and DB2.

Seeking advice on moving up to HDV editing

I appreciate folks on this forum who have assisted me in the past when I’ve had questions about iMovie, editing, burning DVDs etc. Karsten, Lennart, Bengt and others from around the world have been very kind and helpful. I am now seeking advice from anyone regarding “moving up” to the HDV world of video editing.
I recently "retired" my 2003 iMac G4 800 MHz flat screen and replaced it with an iMac 2.8 GHz Intel core 2 duo with a 320 GB hardrive and 4 GB of upgraded RAM. I have a 250 GB external drive as well. I also replaced my old Sony TRV-30 digital camcorder (a great old workhorse which is still going strong after 8 years) with a Canon Vixia HV40 that has high definition recording capability (uses mini DV tape).
I had been using iMovie HD 06 to edit my video projects along with iDVD and Toast 6 to burn them to DVD. I would like to start shooting HDV video with the new Canon, edit and burn the projects to Blu Ray high definition discs. MCE Technologies (among others, I believe) offer both internal and external Blu Ray burners. I don’t believe that the internal Blu Ray burner would work in my new iMac, but I may be wrong on that. (Does anyone know the answer?)
I believe that the MCE external Blu Ray burner would work with my equipment if attached to one of the Firewire ports or possibly through one of the USB 2 ports. (there is both a 400 and 800 Firewire port on this iMac model.) I was planning to acquire Final Cut Express as the editing program with Toast 10 Pro (plus the Blu Ray plug in) to burn the edited projects.
Will this work? Is there anything I should know before I plunge “headlong” into HDV editing? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

HDV is supported by IMHD6.. just to mention that. so, HDV-editing is same as SD..
iMHD6 Export 'FullQuality' creates a file, which is HiDef too, for your Toast/BR workflow ..
HDV creates on import (IMHD6/FCE) huuuuuge files, 40-60GBs/h .. 250 extHDD = 6h, full..
actual price for extHDD with 1TB <100€ ..
keep in mind: internal harddrive has to offer any time 10-20GBs free..
not every BR-standalone-player accepts homebrewn disks..don't be disappointed...
Toast and iDVD can burn DVDs (=which offer SD only) from HiDef projects.. no need to 'convert'.. both apps downsize automatically...
FCE has a (very) steem learning curve.. totally different to iMovie.. no one-click-only, no templates, no ready-mades.. but zillions of options, 101% control.. (simple example: ken burns with zoom-to-zil and rotation and moving out of frame...)
buy a book of FC Mastermind and AppleDiscussions-Level5 supporter *Tom Wolsky* - he's a sensei, in-depth-knowledge, hands-on (=no tech blabla), easy to read and understand.

If ur good at ABAP, learn BI/BW, it is the best combination to prefer. Usaully ABAP''ers learn BW very fast( seen this practically). so go ahead & learn BI/BW.

I'm on a limited budget, can only afford to spend around $300.00
I Want to add 3 more 512 MB Sticks of the Kingston KTA-G4333/512 PC2700 Ram.

I want to use the second new drive for a Photoshop Scratch disk and for temp video file work.
Under 10.3.9 - I use:
Photoshop CS2
Toast 7
Popcorn 1.0.3
VisualHUB
On occasion I still boot into OS 9 for Photoshop 5.5., QuarkXPress 3.2.2 r5 and Adobe Illustrator 7.
I don't foresee being able to afford a Mac Pro and don't want to get a used G5 anytime
soon. I'm hoping my G4 will last me a few more years.
I suspect putting a ATA/100 drive on the ATA/66 Bus might hamper performance. And suspect using a SATA controller card in a "PCI" slot isn't as good as having a True SATA Bus, performance wise either.
I was just wondering which would be the better way to go for performance and stability?
The drives will be probably OEM either at OWC or NewEgg.

With those applications and the intended purpose for the 2d drive, i.e. video and PS scratch, then go SATA. No question, best performance (without considering the cost of SCSI) to be found with SATA even using a PCI SATA controller. PATA been left behind, no ones doing development anymore.
I would suggest partitioning that 2d drive because PS and FS scratch disks are different in kind. FS needs unfragmented media, otherwise dropped frames and sync issues. PS scratch media are temporary and messy.
Depending on the drives and card, SATA drives should bench (with something like Intech QuickBench) at the high end of around 80-90 MB/sec. I haven't bought a PATA HD in years, but best I ever saw was around 60 MB/sec. 80-90 MB/sec is still very good even if say you can bench better in Mac Pro.
The Siig card you're considering is solid. I've used it in both 10.4 and 10.5, but only used it to boot in 10.4.x, never in Leopard. I had some issues with it my others cards, but easily solved by swapping placement.
I also have the two-port Sonnet Tempo, which is actually just a purple Firmtek Seritek 2-port card. I bought the Siig first, having to get it (and a bunch of other stuff) shipped overseas. I later bought the Sonnet because I could get it locally although for a higher price; with overseas taxes, customs, etc. for only the card --- it's a wash.
Anyway, I have two WD SE16 750GB drives in my MDD 1.25 Dual, which were originally on the Siig. With the Siig, QuickBench (I run the big 100MB files) showed 70+ MB/sec Read, around 55+ MB/sec Writes. I was a bit disappointed about the Writes. When the Sonnet arrived, I swapped and ran QuickBench again. With the Sonnet I see both Reads and Writes at 80+ MB/sec.
So as far as benchmarks go, the Sonnet/Firmtek wins. (I know Firmtek has a line of internal cards, including a 4 port version.) But I can't say I noticed any huge difference in everyday tasks. I had some sleep issues with Sonnet/Firmtek in 10.4.x, which was solved by downgrading the firmware.
I have FC Studio, but I capture to externals via eSATA.
I still have the Siig, it's in my MDD 1.0 Dual used as a file and Time machine server. Has a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB on it which doesn't bench to well on the Siig, but I haven't tried bench testing it with the Sonnet.

Anyone think that the new generation of iMacs can handle hard core gaming? I have a 21.5" with the NVidia 650 graphics card.
I had a 23" iMac a couple of years ago and went through 2 graphcs cards and a logic board before it was eventually replaced by Apple Care. I don't want to repeat that exercise.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that won't happen with a game machine either.
Follow the specs of the machine and find out if the games are known to be compatible with the said computer.
Buy AppleCare before the machine is a year old if you get a Mac.

Seeking advice regarding the purchase of an external hard drive for audio

Hi,
Two questions:
1. I have 2 firewire ports on my iMac. Currently I have an Edirol FA-66 plugged into one of these and the other is free. These ports appear to be identical. Can I plug a firewire 800 hard drive into these or am I limited to firewire 400?
2. Is there any practical difference between a firewire 400 aud a USB 2 hard drive?

That's a toss-up, depending on your future plans and current budget. My iMac is FW400-only, but I just ordered a USB/FW800 external enclosure. A little future-proofing, and the price difference didn't break my budget. OTOH, an essentially identical unit with USB/FW400 costs $30 less, and will have exactly the same performance on a FW400 machine (or on any iMac connected to an FA-66).

That FA-66 might be just what I'm looking for -- not a pro, just a hobbyist, like yourself. Any recommendations on vendors? I've had good luck in the past with MusiciansFriend -- but I haven't shopped for musical electronics in years.
