Hard Crash on Podcast update?
A week ago I subscribed to my first podcast (well, like 6 of them, really), and last night between 3am and 7 am my whole computer crashed. I leave it on all the time, so I'm not sure exactly when or why it crashed, I just know that I woke up and I could hear the fans in the computer going full blast.
This morning I started it up, and tried looking through various logs, but there was nothing. I started up Safari and iTunes, hit Play, and about 3 seconds later the whole computer crashed. No response from mouse/keyboard, and the song is playing like a broken record - a half second clip being repeated over and over.
Press and hold power button for 10-15 seconds, comp shuts down. Start it back up, open iTunes and Safari, but this time play a different song (I've had iTunes do this to me before with a specific song - I figured it was corrupted on disk). Same thing, about 3 seconds later the whole system is frozen. This time I notice in the status window that it's updating a podcast.
Hold power button, restart, just open Safari to do the web browsing I wanted, and deal with iTunes later. When I got around to iTunes, I pulled the network cable (not on the internet = no podcast update), was able to play both songs that it crashed on. But when I plugged the internet back in and checked out my current subscriptions, they were all current!
I've got a subscription to the MAKE magazine video podcast, and it was the only one to update today, with a PDF. Strangely though, I have the PDF, so it downloaded before(?) one of the crashes.
I have to believe my problem is directly related to the podcast, so I'm wondering if there's anyone else with the same problem, or an idea on how I can fix it? I've set my podcasts to manual update instead of daily, at least that way if this happens again it will be easier to correlate.

i'm using the same book you are, but i don't use Motion. i do however run FCP and AE at the same time and constently push the book - without crashing. my projects are intensive with cuts and filters/effects. i jump between the programs with Automatic duck constantly.
do you think it might be the graphics card?

Itunes always crashes on podcast update.
Sorry if this has been discussed before, but the search didn't turn up anything that was relavent to my specific problem. As stated in the title, itunes crashes during podcast updates. It happened both before and after the version upgrade. Itunes works fine without the podcast updates, however, I would like to continue to get my episodes of "Ask a Ninja", which I find hilarious. Without fail, it will crash upon updates. Its not due to a particular podcast or nething because even when I update one by one, it will still crash. I can still import songs from CD's and update the pod itself.

ColorFX hard crashing Color after 1.0.1 update
I'm not sure if this is a Decklink issue, or if it's a Color issue, but in any case, since upgrading to 1.0.1, Every time I add a ColorFX node to one of my projects, Color will hard crash instantly.
Desktop Video Out has been disabled in my Decklink Preferences. I've repaired permissions several times, as well.
This is on a 10.4.9 PPC system running Decklink 6.3, Radeon x850 card and Color 1.0.1 (in addition to all the other recent ProApps updates)
Any help would be really appreciated, because I just purchased Graeme Nattress' great Advanced Plugins for Color, and was excited to start playing with them, but alas, I am stuck in the mud right now.I am having the same problem. Have you resolved it yet?

When updating MACOS10.8.5 from app store it hard crashed. Confused
When updating MACOS10.8.5 from app store it hard crashed when restarting. Now there is nothing to update even tho the MAC OS10.8.5 is still there . So,what do I do wait for an updater for the updater?
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports. -
Hard crashes since OSX 10.4.8 system update
Since the OSX update my computer has been hard crashing on me...meaning it crashes to the point that I can not do anything no matter the program I am using. The finder crashes. My mouse doesn't move and the key board doesn't work. Thus I can't even force quit...and I have to hard reboot/shut down my computer. :/ I looked on line to see if I need a firmware update, but it doesn't look like I do.
Few other things: I have a Sonnet Tempo-X eSATA 4 + 4 card that supports a 0 RAID with two 500 GB seagate barracuda. I have a very bad feeling this card does not support osx 10.4.8 yet...I'm going to look there next, but I thought I might as well post to you wonderful apple wizards.
I totally apprecieate any and all information that would help me solve this serious issue. At this point I do not want to use my desktop--in fear of losing it.
Thank you.Hi, hdovesn. Welcome to the Discussions.
In these "hard crashes" are you seeing the following message?
If so, that indicates a kernel panic: see my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. The FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
The troubleshooting steps in that FAQ can also be useful in diagnosing "freezes and hangs" as the causes are often similar. I'd characterize some of the behaviors you described as a freeze or hang.
I concur with your plan to contact Sonnet, specifically to see if they've had similar reports from other users of that card running identical configurations.
FYI: Before installing software updates in the future, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
Good luck!

Hard Crashes - Once rare, now every few hours...
I have a MacBook Pro 15" (late 2008) from the first batch.
Since I purchased it, it would very rarely do a hard crash where the screen turns into garbage and the machine freezes. If there's sound at the time, then this freezes on a shrieking sound that peels your ears. (This most often happened while watching QuickTime movies.)
I read of similar issues on the forums, and due to it's rare occurrence, I decided to await official acknowledgement from Apple and/or a fix.
Well, for the last week, I am now getting a hard crash multiple times a day. The screen goes black except for the top 1/4 to 1/3, and everything is in a hard freeze. I don't know if this was related to some recently released update, a deteriorating issue, or something new.
I'm at a loss, and traveling at the moment so an Apple Store is not an option. Any ideas? Any help?
Am I alone in this?
-Daniel PerezYou need Apple to look at that. Definitely sounds like a hardware issue--possibly in the video circuit.

Hard Drive errors after update attempt
I have a Macbook with Mac OSX 10.5.7. 2.2 GHz Intel core duo 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM Western Digital 320GB Hard drive
I attempted updating to the newest version and the computer froze part way through. When I tried to restart I got the daisy wheel running on the grey screen, but would not go further. So i put in the Install Disc, and hit power button and shift key. I got as far as Installer, but when I got the window that asked where to install the OS, there were no choices in the window.
I then removed the disc and tried to boot up, which it did. All the data is there, but I did lose my desktop customization. All applications launch OK (I have tried about a third) except Safari. Safari will not launch.
Based on another post in the forum, i went to Disk Utility and tried to Repair the disk. It failed due to a "Invalid Node Structure". So I tried to Repair Disk Permissions (also based on a forum post). That ran OK, but now the Repair Disk button is grayed out. And when I try to Verify Disk, I get the following:
SMART Status is verified, Partition Map Scheme is GUID.
In the History Window:
Performing Live Verification
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume
Checking Extents Overflow file
Checking Catalog file
(the next three lines are in red letters)
Invalid Node Structure
The volume MacHD needs to be repaired
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
I have also found that there is no longer an administrator for the computer. It is actually my daughter's, and both she and I have (used to have) administrator privileges. Now in Accounts we are both listed as Standard users. I tried to update software. When asked to give my password, it said I was not an administrator (Using the correct password). Neither would my daughter's password work. The laptop does not think we are administrators.
So now the computer is running, and all data is still on it. But I cannot launch Safari. And I cannot update software (as there is no administrator).
(I have seen some posts suggesting third party software which may fix my disk. But they cost $100 and I can buy a new hard drive for 60 to 80.)
Has anyone a clue as to what went wrong? More important- does anyone know how to fix it??
Many thanks in advance.
MarkAfter I erase the hard drive (I assume one pass of writing zeros is good enough, 7 passes not needed?) do I turn off the laptop, then turn on and insert the Install Disk? Will there be a prompt telling me when to put in the disk? Or do I put in the disc right after erasing?
One pass is fine. If you've previously backed up your hard drive to an external hard drive using SuperDuper!, which is what I use and recommend, or another program, if it created a bootable drive, you want to boot off of it, bring up SuperDuper! and copy the drive back to the internal hard drive. SuperDuper also makes the drive bootable. When done, reboot, and you should be all set. If you're using Time Machine, you'll want to install the operating system, then restore the Time Machine backup. SuperDuper! is available from http://www.shirt-pocket.com/superduper/superduperdescription.html
Finally- should I update the OS? Is there a problem with the newest update that caused this crash, or was it just a spurious glitch/bad luck?
I've been running 10.5.8 for awhile with no issues, and would recommend moving to it. -
Open GL now causing HARD CRASHES after upgrade to 10.5.7
I have a 2.5 year old mac pro intel mac quad core. My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. After the last update, I get hard crashes when I used OpenGL intensive programs such as Photoshop and Electric Image Animator. Electric Image is a 3d program that uses Open GL intensely. When I move a light around it will cause my machine to lock up. Another person who uses Electric image and has the same graphics card is having the same issue.

I made sure I have the latest firmware upgrades for the card. I Need a Fix.Try the ATI Radeon 4870, even though it isn't endorsed for use in your 1st gen Mac Pro.

Unrepairable permission problems in some applications after hard crash.
Hi to all,
this is yet another topic for a problem I have concerning permissions repair on the root HDD. After a hard crash where Finder couldn't be relaunched, I was forced down to a hard reboot (Still looking for OS X reliability :-$).
Symptoms:
I clicked the "Repair permissions" button in Disk Utility, having selected "Macintosh HD" first.
I get this output, then "Repair complete":

Then it displays "Repair complete", not "Repair failed". Of course, when I run a "Check permissions" again, the exact same errors are still present.
Both my partitions are formatted as case-sensitive, journaled HFS+; is this setup prone to failure in case of crash? I was told by Epson Tech support, as side note, that this setup wasn't supported for their EPSON Scan 2.77A software.Well, I never had these messages before, so I assume something changed, and my limited knowledge tells me it may have something to do with the crash.
I indeed tried to repair the disk in addition of the permissions, but Disk Utility told that disk doesn't need repair and is OK.
I'm not having persistent crashes in the sense that most of the time OS X is running smoothly, but whenever I try running it at a - subjective - full load, it starts to behave strangely, ultimately leading to unrecoverable crashes if I don't pay attention to close unneeded applications.
Of course, this is entirely subjective, and I don't have the exact words to describe what happens, let alone search for a possible solutions in the forums. -
Leopard 10.5.2 hard crashes - getting nervous
I've had 3 hard crashes today after installing 10.5.2. Two were tonight. One of those was with about 6 other apps up and the machine being used most the day (MacBook Pro 17, 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 10.5.2 with ALL updates). The other was shortly after I rebooted and I only had Mail open and it locked up as I was typing an eMail - nothing special.
These are hard crashes where nothing works and I have to force shut down the whole computer and restart to get back to normal. I've never had MacOS X lock-up this often and I'm starting to get a little nervous. Anyone else experiencing this?I've had about 5 hard locks since 10.5.2. I'm typically running Photoshop and Illustrator CS3, Mail, iChat, Firefox, iTunes, Suitcase Fusion. I've had it happen without PS/ILL/Suitcase running as well. All software updated.
Applications stop responding, iTunes audio might keep playing, cursor still responds for awhile but switches between beach ball and arrow, keyboard unresponsive, clock freezes. I've let it sit for about 10 minutes, but I always have to hold down the power for a hard shutdown.
I have several peripherals attached:
-Dell 24" LCD via DVI out
-Wifi and BT turned off, using ethernet at work
-MyBook hard drive via Firewire 800
-Epson R2400 via Firewire 400
-Belkin USB hub on right side
-Wacom tablet, Drobo, and Dell LCD USB hub connected to Belkin hub
-Apple keyboard and iPod cable connected to Dell LCD USB hub
-Earbuds plugged into audio out
No crashes today, but my confidence is rattled. -
Windows XP hard crash reboot after login
I've seen a few topics about this, but none of them with solid regression info yet so i'm starting this thread. I hope some of you out there can help out, but I fear the answer is that were all screwed.
SUMMARY:
Windows XP will hard crash (reboot) just after login after loading the UI and during the loading of network components. This then results in the system rebooting into a black screen with no standard windows debug. (which can be forced by F8) Hard shut down is required to restart boot process. This problem can also occur from a waking from sleep, and very rarely occurs at random. When its caused during normal operation its usually spawned on by pressing a button on the keyboard. It will occur randomly at startup, and will occur with Starup Disc set or Option Select. Rarely it will boot into windows XP on the first try, more often (over time) it will require 3-5 reboots to get into XP successfully. This problem isn't caused by the install of any software, instead it progressively gets worse over time. I have experienced this problem with BootCamp 1.3, 1.4 and 2.0 on my MacBook Pro 2.16, but I have never experienced it with my Mac Pro ever which has the same OS and bootcamp installed.
I'm convinced it has something to do with the network drivers and how they are loading. I've noticed that the times it fails to boot that the WiFi and Local Area network icons aren't loaded in the system tray, and the times I have success getting into XP that they are already present when the UI is loading. This same behavior occurs on my Mac Pro and other PC clones, but they dont hard crash when this occurs. On them, you just have to wait for the network to be available.
STEPS:
0) MacBook Pro 2.16 17", Mac OS X 10.5.1, Bootcamp 2.0, Windows XP Pro SP2
1) Power up
2) Hold down Option (can set bootdrive as well)
3) Select Windows
4) Select a User (with password set)
5) Enter password
RESULTS:
Hard crash reboot just after UI loads while network compoents begin to load into the system tray.
WORKAROUND:
Shoot dog
REGRESSION:
Never occures on Mac Pro
Occures with Bootcamp 1.3, 1.4 and 2.0
P.S. I'm writing this in BootcampUPDATE
I've gone into msconfig and turned off everything and have been starting up just fine, so it seams one of these items is cuasing the problem. I see that some people say its the keyboard manager, and I wouldn't doubt it now. So i'm going to leave everything off for now, make sure its always booting and then slowing rool items back on. I'll keep this up to date.
If you want to do this yourself, you can do it two ways.
Built in:
1) Click on the Start Button
2) Select Run...
3) type "msconfig" and hit OK
4) Select the "Startup" tab
5) Unselect everything you see there
6) Close and reboot!
3rd party (the way i prefer)
1) Get Spybot (the new one is awesome)
2) install Spybot
3) Run Spybot
4) Update, immulize and scan (optional, but you will be surprised)
5) Select the "Mode" menu option
6) Select "Advanced mode"
7) Select 'tools" on the lower left hand side
8) Select "System Startup"
9) uncheck all options.
10) close and reboot!
Note: this appiaction is really great, and it will also install a device to watch for reg changes which is good for this sort of regression. Again, its not nessiary to install spybot, but i love it and have it on every PC i ever use and have never regretted it. IT WONT SLOW YOUR COMPUTER LIKE OTHER CRAPPY APPS. This is a very light and clean app. -
my podcast app is shutting down after a few seconds iv tried to reinstall several times but nothing is working even after the podcast update last week im still having no luck getting it working any suggestions?
if you are subscribed to the Hardwell podcast... quickly open the Podcast app and delete the most recent Hardwell podcast from 3/22.
for some reason that's causing the crash. i've deleted and it works fine again. -
I have a 2010 Macbook pro running snow leopard (Mac OS 10.6.8). First off, this has been the worst computer I've ever owned or have heard of someone having, Mac or PC. There hasn't been a time where something hasn't been wrong. I'm going to list my specs, my current problems and maybe list previous problems after that. Any advice or suggestions would be great. My brother works for apple out in Cali and I've been sending him crash and bug reports and he can't seem to figure out what's going on.
Specs:
2010 Macbook Pro (Mac OSX 10.6.8)
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics Cards: Intel HD Graphics (288 VRAM) and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (512 VRAM)
(if you want more info, just ask)
To start things off, my computer hard crashes at random points playing basically any game. StarCraft 2 (when I could play the game prior to Blizzard patching my OS out of the minimum requirements), League of Legends, MineCraft and others all crash while in use. My computer screen suddenly flashes white and then to black and whatever audio may have been playing in the past second of gameplay is thrown into a constant loop. The screen is solid black with no mouse and there is no keyboard functionality. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button. I first started noticing this problem back when StarCraft 2 Heart of the Swarm came out. I would crash every 4 or 5 games in this way. Since that was happening I resorted to playing other games such as League of Legends. I wasn't having any trouble at all, but gradually it started to have the hard crashing issues. Initially every handful of games, now it crashes in roughly 50% of the games I play. This happens while I have NO other applications open and this has happened even after a complete restart with only 2 things opening at startup. League started crashing in this way after I brought my computer in to have a fan replaced.
Another thing which has started happening since I had my fan replaced at the apple store: My computer has become very sluggish at times and my computer freezes in another way. Many times a day, I will find I click on something in an application and the entire computer locks up. There's no spinning beachball. There's no movement of any sort on the screen and there is no button functionality, but I can move the mouse. Clicking does nothing. This sort of freeze lasts for about 30 seconds up to 5 or 6 minutes or so. After that, it suddenly just decides to work again. I can tell when it unfreezes because the clock in the corner jumps to the correct time. This has happened frequently while using Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari. It also happened while trying to use Skype. It was freezing the most when facebook or youtube has been open, but it happens without that happening as well. One of the first times I noticed it, earlier this year, I was searching for work and tried to go to this website: http://www.nhab.org/ (looking for a job). It froze my computer as I described above (and I didn't know it would unfreeze after several minutes, so I thought my computer was completely frozen). I restarted, went to the same website and it froze again. I did this a third time and it froze again, so I restarted again. On the fourth try, it loaded. The frequency of this problem is ridiculous. I actually decided to delete Google Chrome from my computer (and its support files) since my computer would freeze the most often with Chrome (though I used Chrome mostly for youtube and watching tv shows online). Almost instantly after deleting Chrome, my computer was running significantly faster. things loaded quicker in other browsers and aplications loaded smoother. My text no longer lagged when typing in facebook... It hasn't solved the freezing, though the freezing tends to last less time now.
Another thing that happens, which I am not sure is normal: When my computer is booting, after the grey screen, it changes to light blue. During this light blue time, often times white horizontal centimeter to inch wide bars will flash across the screen near the top. This also happens on shutting down. I also noticed that when it shuts down the screen doesn't just shut off. The screen flickers quick for up to a second and then it is off. It doesn't just turn off.
My computer has also occassionally flashed for a brief fraction of a second, to the blue start up color and back to whatever I am doing.
Those are all issues I am having right now and I am beginning to wonder if this several thousand dollar computer is capable of doing much more than just writing text..
Prior issues I have had:
Right from the start, I have had major graphical issues which I showed to the people at the apple store and they reinstalled flash, but they really didn't know what was going on. These glitches would tiles previous graphical things I had done in an artistic mozaic across my desktop, replacing my background image with broken mozaics. It's hard to explain without showing, so here are 2 screenshots from it:
The people at the store thought it was just flash... but I don't understand how that could be flash. I would have to flip through different desktop backgrounds I used to make it go away. After it doing this for 2 years, it has only happened once since then and not very badly..
Another issue I had: The battery on my laptop just about exploded... I woke up one morning with my laptop sitting on my night stand as usual, but there was a small crack across part of my trackpad. I was scared because I thought I must have done something... I went to the bathroom, took a shower and when I came back the crack was farther across the trackpad. I had breakfast, came upstairs and my trackpad had 1 crack across the whole thing with multiple mini cracks going in every direction from it. After telling my brother what was going on, he quickly said that it was the battery and to take it to a store. I took it to the store and showed them what was happening and they very quickly took it out back and I quote "threw the battery in a firesafe immediately" because when they opened the laptop it started to quickly expand. This ended up cracking my trackpad as well as bending the bottom of the body on the laptop. All had to be replaced...
Then I had the fan sounding like a weedwacker, so I had it replaced a couple months ago and a couple months ago is when the freezing began, the computer started running slowly and all games crash the computer.
I have had a lot of things go wrong, not a lot of things go right and I'm really frustrated. Can anyone tell me how to get my computer to stop freezing or how to make it stop hard crashing during any of the games I play?
Basically, what I have done so far is reset the PRAM I think? I held command + option + P + R on start up and had it chime 3 or 4 times. Other than that, I don't know what to do.... suggestions?I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation. My computer did have the faulty part you linked to. I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager. Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge. They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test. They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above. I've never had this experience before. Even brand new, I got occasional crashes. Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow. Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed. Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton. -
I have a free agent desk 500 GB external hard drive. Since updating my iMac OS to Mountain Lion it no longer backs up through Time Maching like it did in the past. Now, after completing its work it says, "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder." I cannot find any sites that help me fix this. Do I need to purchase a new external hard drive?
Hi Aaron,
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imaging something not being covered there. -

Thanks for your help, i've managed to solve the problem by myself
Solution
1. Start Logic in 64bit mode - see here for more info
2. Open the crashing file
3. The file will crash but this time you'll see a message on the pop dialog saying "32 Bit audio unitbridge quit unexpectedly while using the Massive plugin"
4. Confirm the plugin name cousing problems in the error/crash report - look for this line; Plugin identifier:Massive.MusicDevice.componet - in this case, the Native Instrument Massive caoused the problem and had to bounce a short audio loop, I am lucky couse the AU wan on looping melodies. Try to reload the application in 32bit mode or use alternative.
5. Problem solved
