Hard disc cleaning

My parents are looking to dispose of their old, battered iMac G3 266MHz (and upgrading to a G5), and want to make sure the hard disc is as empty as possible before selling/disposing of it.
I've seen Darik's Boot and Nuke (http://dban.sourceforge.net) recommended, and there seems to be a Mac PPC version, but does anyone have any experience of using this? Or any other recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Once you've backed-up and transfered all data from the old iMac you should boot from the iMac Software Restore/Install CD (originally provided with the iMac).
Then erase the Hard disk and perform a full installation of the OS. This will return the iMac to factory settings and appearance. It's then in a good state to sell. The data will remain on the Hard Disk but all references to it will be erased and the fact that you have installed a new OS on to will destroy some of that data.
If you hold sensitive data then you'll need to "Zero All Data" OS 9 included this option but I'm not sure about OS 8.6.
Modern OS like Tiger offer '7 or 35 way Random data writting' which really really does destroy the data!

  • Hard Disc Not Exist

To start at the beginning; Just under 3 years ago, my ex wife bought my daughter (then 12) an HP G56-105SA.
A year ago my daughter moved back in with me, and brought it with her.
Just the lap-top and power supply. No Recovery discs; no manuals; just the bits she used.
Last week... she had teen-age hissy-fit, because it didn't work... this became MY problem.
Of course, being ancient and obtuse  and a PAIR-RENT...I am probably missing the obviouse, like that it's almost Christmas, and what she really wants is a new i-pad.... but she ent getting one... not off me least ways, so I'm stuck trying to fix this thing, so she can do her home-work, and be doubly ungreatful!
    So to the facts.
1/ I started by switching it on.... which resulted in black screen and 'No Bootable Device' message.
2/ Turned PC over, undid HDD cover; removed HDD, and cable; re-seated & replaced; turned on again. No Change.
3/ Removed HDD - Plugged into spare SATA slot on my desk-top.
    Curiousely, it threw up four drived;
E: which appeared to be a ghost, with nothing on and capacity of the discs full 250Gb.
F: Which was her C: Operating System partition; aprox 170Mb with all windows directories present and accessible.
    M: HP Restore
    N: HP Tools
As suspected... her C-Drive (My F) was chocka-block with barely 3% free space.
3.1/ I took my life in my own hands... and deleted six seasons of 'Glee'..... and transfered the less than a dongle sized directory called 'Home Work' to my desk-top. I emptied her recycle bins.
3.2/ I ran disc tools on my (Win XP) desk top; and applied Disc Clean Up. Took a while, and I dont think freed much.
3.3/ I ran disc tools....... and applied Scan Disc, full scan and fix... and 24 hours later it told me it had fixed things!
3.4/ I ran De-Frag... and another 24 hours later.. it looked reletively healthy; with about 40% free space.
4/ Returned Hard disk to Lap-Top.... pressed start.... same black screen! Pressed f2, used diagnostics; got 'Hard disc Not Exist'
5/ Asked Daughter if she had the HP Factory Restore discs..... she looked at me as only a teenager looking at ancient, obtuse, and utterly STOOOPID pair-rent can.... you know, like she had discovered something unsavory on the sole of her shoe, she had never seen before...... with added contempt.
Phone calls and text messages in her bedroom followed; the unhelpful conclusion of which was... "Mum says, you just run Recovery from the Hard Drive" ...  aparently she had argued that actually when teh computer was first switched on, it would have asked to 'make' recovery DVD's.... but aparently her big-brother had sorted that all out, and said you didn't need them, as it was... on the hard drive.... Can ANYONE tell me why I married the woman? I'm SURE there must have been a reason... but for the life of my I cant think what it could have been!
6/ I returned HDD to my desk-top. I found the pdf user manual, and found the 'make restore disc' instructions & tried running the make program on my desk-top.... it refused telling me what I already knew... my desk-top isn't an HP G56!
7/ HASSLED as home-work was now due, and she couldn't print it off my Desk-Top, as I dont have the latest version of MS Office she uses at school..... I went back to basics; pulled Windows 7 install disc from the draw, went to HP support and down-loaded ALL the driver files for an HP G56-105SA...
8/ WIPED THE LAP-TOP HARD DRIVE - in XP on desk-top, removed all partitions, then re-formatted the disc, ready for 'fresh' install of Windows 7 and 7 alone, without all the HP factory pre-installs.... get it running, and then worry about installing whatever software she wants/needs after seperately; and with bit of luck, without partisions or extraniouse would-you-like-fries-with-that programs cluttering it up; might give a bit more space so takes a bit longer till its clogged with 'glee' again.
9/ Inserted HDD in Lap-Top. Switched on... opened DVD draw; switched off. Inserted Windows 7 disc; switched on.
ALL looked very promicing, and Got windows back-ground, USB mouse, and win 7 install prompts... up to "Select partition to install operating system'.
HDD showed in the drop-down box as 'Disc 0' with full 250Gb available and healthy
BUT message below "Windows 7 cannot install on this divice - Not bootable" clicking for details... said check bios to ensure HDD management enabled.
10/ Switched off, went into bios... NO options for doing anything with HDD as far as I could see; while 'system diagnostics' chucked out error message "Hard disc Not Exist"
11/ Repeated Windows install... and at prompt tried putting in DVD of down-loaded HP Drivers to load a disc controller... told me there were no drivers on the DVD ( they were all executables I presume intended to be run after Windows install)
12/ My 'data' Hard-Drive was sat on teh desk where I had removed it to plug in her lap-top disc. JUST for reference... I removed her Lap-top HDD and plugged my Desk-Top HDD in to see if the lap-top would recognise ANY disk... answer no it didn't.
SO... it would appear that the Lap-Top HDD is 'OK' we have fault on the Lap-Top, which recognises the HDD under windows install... but not under the Bios.
I found this forum looking for hints where to go next, and did find this thread: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/my-laptop-says-my-hard-disk-does-not-exi...
BUT, whils seemingly the same problem... that was fixed by my first intuative check, taking the HDD out and replacing it.... but ent solved this one.
So what next? I'm starting to run out of inspiration... and no chance is she having a new lap-top this christmas!

Follow the instructions on this tutorial page to make a DBAN on a usb flash drive that is at least 1GB.
OK, followed instructions; down-loaded and ran executable. Selected DBAN v2.2 from drop down as instructed (only option with DBAN in title); 2nd dialogue asked for ISO file, entered DBAN in download dir; it asked to create, clicked 'y', then selected 4GB USB flash as destination, and 'run'. Went into a command screen, and 'did-stuff' with two error messages; first saying something couldn't be found; second that DBAN 2.2 'not supported'.
Popped dongle into the Lap-top anyway; files were written to it; entered Bios and set Boot order to USB-Floppy first... returned "BootMNGR is Missing" & prompted re-start.... A USB thumbdrive (or flash disk) is not a dongle. That is a different technology for licensing firmware contained in a usb device.
So, tried & failed, BUT.. the lap-top hard drive is 'blanked' It's been scanned, formatted, un-partitioned & reformatted, and shows as a factory fresh HDD would out the packet. So do I really need to use DBAN to 'nuke' it? Yes. it is a good plan to nuke the hard disk. It sounds like you need a different tutorial than the one I provided.
then do a Windows 7 install.  This time use the Microsoft store's  Windows 7 DVD\USB download utility to make a usb installer.
Thanks; but I dont really want to buy another licence for an operating system (I actually dont much like!) I already have licences for, already have DVD's for, but not bought through Microsofts Down-Load platform so I dont have anything in my purchase history and so would have to buy as if new JUST to get a version that loads through a USB port.. when its loading hapily enough from DVD... just not happy to install to the HDD, its actually recognising, and I'm just as likely, I presume, to get the same problem, of it refusing to install to HDD from a new USB drive version as my existing DVD version, for the expense and trouble.... unless I'm missing a leap in the logic here?
The Microsoft DVD\USB download utility name is actually  a misnomer. I don't know why Microsoft called it that. It is actually a usb installer and DVD installer creation utility. It does not require you to purchase anything.  Use the license that you already have when using the USB installer during a Windows 7 installation. There is no need to buy another. Licenses are always diistinctly seperate from the installation disk(s) or ISOs.  It is the same thing as a DVD installation disk except much faster.
You don't necessarily need to use an ISO image as suggested in the following video. You can also use your Windows 7 installation DVD as a source for the Windows 7 DVD\USB download tool.
    Any other suggestions, any-one?

  • Hard Disc not booting

    Hi guys. Tricky one this.
I swapped the original hard disc from my macbook pro for a Momentus XT hard disc.
No problems for months, love the speed of it.
Yesterday my mbp would not boot up, it gets to the grey apple logo, and the spinning icon, but hangs there. I try safe mode, and I try the Lion recovery option and re-install Lion on the HD. Still no startup, still stuck on the spinning icon and the apple logo.
I put in the old original HD with Snow Leopard on and the laptop works perfectly, hoorah! A dead hd I assume. Although I then put the Momentus XT in a usb enclosure and plug it into the laptop, viola all the folders and files are there in perfect order.
I try booting from the external drive, but it just gets stuck in the same place again - apple logo and spinning icon.
Can anyone think of a possible way I can rectify this and get back to using the Momentus as my main drive?
I can't think of anything else to do (other than a complete clean install which I don't want to do and loose all my data).
    Help!

    Thanks Lupiunus.
    To clarify:
Inside the mbp now is the original HD running Snow Leopard, booting and running fine.
Inside the usb enclosure is the Momentus XT drive running Lion, which is browsable and usable as an external disc in Snow Leopard, but unable to boot from when inside the mbp.
If I plug the usb enclosure into the mbp, turn on the mbp holding the option key and boot from the external drive it simply gets to the Apple logo then sits forever with the rotating icon beneath the logo.
Could there be a random permission problem, or a random file causing Lion to not boot?
It's also worth mentioning that as well as using the cmd + r to do the Lion recovery install, I've also tried repairing permissions and the drive, which gave no errors.

  • Wipe my hard drive clean except for the OS whats the best way?

I need to wipe my hard drive clean except for the OS whats the best way?

From Kappy (note: with this method, you will need to update to the present OS version using the appropriate Combo Update from Apple Downloads.)
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities (Installer menu if using Panther or Jaguar) menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now complete the OS X installation. At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer. Instead just shut it off. The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • How do I wipe my hard drive clean so I can sell my iMac G3?

I have an iMac G3 (model #5521) with OS 9 and need to know how to wipe the hard drive clean so I can safely sell it. I tried following the advice someone gave to an earlier post, but was unable to find the security screen for the Zero All Data option or even Disk Utility on the Installer menu for that matter. I have these discs: Software Install, Software Restore and Apple Hardware Test. If someone would be so kind as to walk me through the process step by step, I would greatly appreciate it. I know very little about Apple computers.

You need to boot to the Software Install CD-ROM that came with the iMac. To do so boot the computer off the CD-ROM by holding down the C key. Once it boots up open the Utilities folder displayed in the open CD-ROM window. Open Drive Setup. Open the Functions menu. Select the option labeled Options. In that window select the Zero All Data option checkbox. Open the initialization menu. Select initialization options. You want to make sure the iMac formats its hard drive in HFS+ or Mac OS Extended. Once you've selected all the initialization options click the Initialize button. It will then format the hard drive & check it for bad sectors. Then reinstall the Mac OS. Then it should be ready to sell.

  • I had my hard drive cleaned and cannot install cs6 master collection from disk.  I am getting error message failed to initialize.  please download adobe advisor support.  I have a pc and am using windows 8

I had my hard drive cleaned and cannot install cs6 master collection from disk.  I am getting error message failed to initialize.  please download adobe advisor support.  I am using a pc and have windows 8.  Please help.

start at the top and work your way down applying applicable fixes until your problem is resolved.
    if cc (win):  https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-desktop-application-failed.html
    if, your error is:
"Installer failed to initialize. File not found." or "Installer failed to initialize. This could be due to missing files."
first, rename OOBE Folder to OOBE.old.
    to find OOBE:
64 bit win OS: Program Files x86\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE
32 bit win OS: Program Files \Common Files\Adobe\OOBE
    mac os: HD>library>application support>adobe>caps
    mac os: USER>library>application support>adobe>OOB
if that fails or isn't the exact error you see, uninstall, clean (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html) and reinstall.
if you're using a dvd to install:
copy the disc contents to a desktop directory and install from that directory.
    if you're using a mac:
    1. Try to Create a new user account in Mac with Administrator Priviledges.
    2. Login to the New user, Navigate to Mac HD> Application> Utilities> Adobe Installer folder, Locate products like Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Air and un-install them
    3. Navigate to User Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
    4. Navigate to Mac HD> Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
    5. Start the installation again.
if everything applicable above fails, check your installation logs:

  • Annoying: hard disc "clicking" sound, APM

    Hi.
I have recently purchased a new hard disk for my MacBook4,1 - a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 (Model: ST9500420AS). I made a clean install of Mac OS X 10.6 (putting the old disc aside), everything runs fine, but there's a random clicking sound from my new hdd that drives me crazy - even worse: sometimes there seems to be a small lag in program execution when this occurs (its hard to describe, the computer doesn't really "hang", but it's noticeable).
At first i thought the new drive was defective, but all S.M.A.R.T values were fine (except for one, i'll come to that), and the phenomenon vanishes when the hdd has something to do (copying large files etc.)
I searched the forums and found some clues that this noise is caused by the heads going into a parking position and the drive spinning down to save energy. Some S.M.A.R.T-values to point that out:
    9 Power On Hours 0x0032 100 100 000 Old age Always - 112
    139 Load Cycle Count 0x0032 096 096 000 Old age Always - 9442
This drive has done over 9k load cycles in 112 hrs, one every 43 seconds. As far as i know that's not supposed to happen. At least it's very annoying.
A discussion in this forum led me to the "hdapm"-tool (<http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm/>) which thankfully still works under 10.6. I've installed it as a startup daemon:
    Sep 3 23:12:23 probe hdapm[50]: disk0: ST9500420AS
Sep 3 23:12:23 probe hdapm[50]: Setting APM level to 0xfe:
    Sep 3 23:12:23 probe hdapm[50]: Success
and the problem disappears. At least as long i don't go on battery-power or back to power adapter.
Is there a "real" solution to this problem? This can't be right, right? Some energy-saving would be nice, but more like "after 5 Minutes of inactivity", not every 43 seconds.
P.S. "Put the hard disc(s) to sleep when possible" has no effect on this behavior.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the info but what is an External Hard drive Enclosure?
    Hello,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
If you have an external hard drive enclosure you may
be able to salvage the files on it.
I had the same situation with my mother-in-laws iMac
a few months ago. I removed the HD and put it in the
freezer for 20-30 minutes and then into the external
enclosure. I recovered most of the data before it
quit working and then repeated the process to recover
the rest of the data. If the freezer doesn't do it,
try a warm (150˚F or so) oven. Once the data is
recovered, throw the drive away...it's dead.

  • Why pre-configured Solaris VM with 5 (!) virtual hard discs ?

I downloaded the pre-configured Virtual Machine of Solaris Express Edition for VmWare and extracted it as described.
Much to my surprise I found 5 (!) *.vmdks
According to my knowledge these represent 5 independent virtual hard discs.
    Why this ?
Can I merge all the 5 virtual discs to one single virtual disc ?
    Mike

If for some reason that the server is not cleaned up properly, you may see the error message:
"Error: - 'hostname' has been managed." (from Oracle VM Manager)"
You can manually reset the Oracle VM Server agent. First, shutdown the VMs on the server and make sure no VMs running on the server:
    # xm list
    # xm shutdown domain-id
Then, stop Oracle VM Server agent:
    # service ovs-agent stop
Clean up the Oracle VM server agent state files from /etc/ovs-agent/db location :
    # rm -rf /etc/ovs-agent/db/*
And restart Oracle VM Server agent
    # service ovs-agent start
One the Oracle VM Server agent is up and running, you can register the server with the Oracle VM Manager.

  • Invisible files (??) blocking space on external hard disc

After using a dos formatted external hard disc with my Mac I can no longer save anything onto the free space with my PC. The is supposed to be at least 80 GB in that partition and both the Mac and the PC say the space is free. The Mac can save files onto it but not the PC. I have tried cleaning it on both systems but apart from doing a reformatting (lots of work to move the other content) does anyone have any more ideas? What hat the Mac put there that is invisible? I already deleted the Mac trash file (.$something) which was invisible on the PC. Now no files are showing up anywhere.

I definitely lost the Photos that I synced - not sure if it's because I saw the ! next to the AppleTV device in iTunes and selected it to see why, resulting in a sync without the connected photos - thus deleting those that were on the AppleTV originally.
I think this may be the case.
I haven't actually tested the effects of removing the external HD, but I've rather suspected that if it should become unavailable that the content of the tv would be safe, although I have also suspected it might be quite easy to force a sync without realising what was happening and thereby delete the content from the tv.
Of note, there have been numerous occasions over the last few months where my drive has been disconnected and I haven't given my tv syncing a thought and as yet I haven't lost anything.
The position I suspect will be quite different if I wanted to sync something on my mac while my HD is unavailable, I'm fairly sure I would delete everything from the tv. I believe the answer to the OP's question depends entirely on what they will be doing while the drive is disconnected.

  • Hard drive clean up/utilities

I am relatively new to macs. I would like to clean up my hard drive. When using PC's you can do defragments, disc clean-up, etc...Is there a comparable option for mac or any other suggestions for a general clean-up?

OSX does a lot of clean up on its own. It automatically defragments files <20MB and bigger ones shouldn't need it unless you cramp the drive for space. Always leave at least 10GB free, preferably 15+.
There's maintenance tools, but actually you really shouldn't need to run them. The best maintenance tools are periodically checking your drive with Disk Utility in your applications > utilities folder. Verify your drive and its permissions. If there are problems you can usually fix them with DU but will need to boot from your installer disk for drive repair, but permissions is best run from your updated main drive.

Here are some additional tips, but go easy on the "maintenance" tools unless you know what you are doing. Most of them are really for troubleshooting and dealing with specific issues that may arise rather than routine maintenance. Your #1 preventive measure is making sure you have a backup of your whole drive so if a problem does occur you can just copy it all back. There is a special kind of copying called cloning (Utilities: Carbon Copy Cloner, Superduper, others) which make a bootable copy of your internal drive to a firewire external drive. Well worth the money right now as trying to recover a lost drive when (not if) it happens can cost $300+ and a lot of grief.

  • How wipe hard drive clean without a disk and reinstall OS?

Running a 15" Mid 2010, OS 10.8.3; after migrating Profile to new MacBook want to wipe hard drive clean & reinstall Mountain Lion 10.8.3 in order to give to daughter as a "new" computer. All I can find in archived discussions is how to do it w/ a disk.

    Yes I would.
The iLife Apps, "i" Photo, Movie and Garageband (And "i" DVD and WEB if you Mac came with Snow Leopard originally), are not included with the Operating system. They are separate applications that you need to either download from the Mac App Store, from your Purchases area once you have logged into the MAS with the Apple ID you used to register that Mac with, or from the second System Reinstall Disc, the Applications disc, that came with your Mac if it originally came with Snow Leopard.
So I read you are running a Mid 2010 MBP. In that case you would need to use the second Original System Disc to reinstall the iLife Applications.
That may be a problem for you as the iLife apps that came with that system are 3 years old and may not want to install on Mt Lion 10.8.3.
If you run into problems installing them from that second system disc you may have to start off by first reinstalling Snow Leopard and then the iLife Apps and Then Upgrade to Mt Lion. Making sure after installing Snow Leopard and the iLife Apps you update everything through Software Update before you do the Mt Lion upgrade.
Sorry about the hassle but blame Apple for that.
Hopefully you have the Original system discs but if you don't then you can order a replacement set from Apple for a small charge.
    Good Luck & Best Wishes.

  • How can I delete previous sites from my hard disc?

I am working my way through Adobe Muse - Classroom in a book.
I recently asked the forum about an unlabeled 'preparation page' and finally located it at the end of the folder of lessons. My thanks for that assistance.
I have now got as far as Lightbox and Widgets. Now I would like to wipe the board clean and start afresh.
Either because of differences between the book or updates to Muse and my Welcome dialogue box has eight attempts that I would like to remove.
How do I remove / delete previous sites from the Welcome dialogue box or should that read Hard Disc?
    Help much appreciated.

    /Dear Sanjit,
I'm sorry but that trick doesn't work on my copy of Muse. If I click on
any of the files names on the welcome window it opens as a Muse file and
if I right click nothing happens at all. My Muse is up to date as I get
it from Adobe Cloud/./Adobe Air has just now updated/.
      Any ideas?

  • Wiping you hard drive clean!

I have a 4 year old macbook pro with mountain lion on it. I wish to reset my hard drive and i read that in order to wipe you hard drive clean you need to put the installation cd that came with the laptop. So my question is, will i lose mountain lion in the process and have my macbook pro set back to Leopard??

Yes but you can reinstall it from the Mac App Store for free after you wipe the drive reinstall Leopard and Snow Leopard, or just use the Snow Leopard disc to first reinstall Snow Leopard (Leaving Leopard out of the mix) then uipdate that from Software Update to 10.6.8 and then go to the MAS and redownload Mt Lion.

  • Hard disc is full

I am trying to get rid of unused stuff on my desktop. How can I clean up my hard disc to have more space?
    Thanks,

Even in un-paid mode OmniDiskSweeper is great at showing you everything - sorted - and you can double click to get to it in the Finder.
Paying lets you do one thing, delete the file or folder from within the program.
Makes it easy and fast to dig through packages and hidden directories as well as normal places.
Sure, you can even use the terminal to sort and view, but most prefer and can take in more information, when looking at a graphic representation.
