Hard Disc Size not really recognized

Dear all, first time I am in this forum here!
I looked for a while in different posts, which I did in similar forums before, but I was not able to find the answer I'd liek to get.
Some time ago I upgraded my X60s hard drive from 60 to a Samsung 250 GB hard drive by using Acronis software and cloning. The bios was recognizing the new harddrive and I thought everything is fine. By the way I am using XP, all the available updates from Lenovo are installed (to my limited knowledge, I have to say)
But now I realize, that the hard drive is already nearly fully occupied, which I cannot understand, because on C:\ I only find ca. 120 GB of files.
So what is wrong? I just downloaded the PC Doctor software available at Lenovo, but the tests stops with a failure during the "SMART short self test" (in German: "SMART kurzer Selbsttest").
Is it possible to fix that? I do not have XP on discs and would like to avoid a whole new set up of the system. Is there a proper tool I could use to determine, what is wrong?
I would really appreciate any hint!! Because in generell I love the x60s. It is a fantastic little notebook!
Thanks for reading this and sorry for taking your valuable time.
Best regards,
Hans from Frankfurt, Germany
X60s, 2.5 GB RAM, WD500 GB

Like Hans, I also purchased a Western Digital 500 GB hard drive, aka Scorpio Blue. My first attempt to use it involved creating bootable DVDs with the Thinkvantage sofware and running the Rescue and Recovery program wih the new drive installed, but thad did not work.
Than I saw Hans' post re using Acronis to clone his new WD drive from his old drive and then swap them, so I tried this method too and it worked. For non-techies like me, here are the specific steps I followed to clone my original drive that has Windows XP Pro installed. If I've made a mistake below, please correct me. For this procedure you will need a USB drive connection kit and a small phillips screwdriver.
1) Use a USB connection kit to connect the new hard drive to a USB port. The USB connection kit I used was a little flaky, so I had to disconnect and reconnect the cables once or twice before the drive was recognized.
2) If you do not see the new hard disk in the list of hard disks in "My Computer," you may need to format it. To format, right-click "My Computer" and choose "Manage." In the dialog that appears, under "Storage" click "Disk Management." If I recall correctly, you right-click on the new drive's name and choose "Format."
3) If you don't have it already, download a copy of Acronis True Image Home. There is a free 15-day trial downloadable at:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/trueimage/
Of course, after downloading Acronis, you need to install it.  The name of the file I downloaded was TrueImage2009_d_en, which was in the Downloads folderin My Documents.
4)  Once True Image Home is installed, start up the program by choosing Start/All Programs/Acronis/TrueImage Home. In the start up window, click Try Now.
5) In the blue panel in the lower left corner of the screen, click "Utilities." You will then see two options: "Clone Disk" and "Add New Disk." Choose "Clone Disk."
6) Follow the prompts from there, taking care to correctly designate the source disk, which is your old hard disk (c drive). The destination disk is your new hard drive. I used the recommended "Automatic" option and let Acronis partition the new 500 GB drive proportionally to my old120 GB drive. The software warns you that cloning will erase whatever is on the destination drive. You have to agree to this to continue.
7) Early in the cloning process, a dialog tells you to reboot. Click the Reboot button. After that, you can let the cloning go unattended for a while. I think mine took about 30 to 45 minutes.
8) When the screen tells you that cloning was successful, turn off your computer, disconnect the USB connection kit attached to your new drive. Then remove the old internal drive, using the procedure described at the web address below (there's a movie if you want to see it done). You should unplug the laptop and remove the battery first. Put the disk cover and phillips screw that attaches it someplace safe.
Hard disk removal instructions:  http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-62795.html
9) Once my old drive was out of the Thinkpad, I pulled off the rubber things on the side and removed the metal cradle by unscrewing the four small phillips screws on the non-labeled side. I then attached the metal cradle to the new Scorpio drive and put the rubber pieces on the sides and inserted the drive into my laptop. At some point you will want to reattach the hard disk cover to the Thinkpad with the little phillips screw but you may want to test the drive first (step 10).
10) Reinsert the battery and turn the computer back on to test the drive. Mine booted just fine on first try, and all my files were there.. I have an Ultrabay and a driver for a software key for some court reporting software I use and those worked too.  Once you've verified the new drive works, turn off the computer and reattach the hard disk cover to the laptop if you haven't done so already.
 Hope this is helpful.

  • My toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it. I have the preferences checked to show icon and have checked utilities folder. nothing. Help!

I have a iMac, Yosemite 10.10 and my toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it!. I have the preferences checked to show icons and have looked in the utilities folder..nothing. I have also changed ports. ??

    A few things to try:
1-Repair permissions and restart your computer.
    2-Zap the PRAM
3-Use Software Update/App Store to update your OS to OS 10.10.3.  Also, update everything SU/AS has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • Blu-ray Disc size not changing.

I followed adobes workflow for final cut to encore cs4 by using compressor to create and MPEG2 Elementary stream Blu-ray file.
now when i take the file (20GB) into encore the blu-ray project and my disc info always says 28 GB. I am trying to trim the end of the video so that the file would be smaller on the disc. I can do this fine with SD DVD's but in the blu-ray even if I make the timeline with only 5min of footage it keeps saying 28GB.
is there something I am doing wrong?
    The file says don't Transcode.
I am new to Encore and so far my experience hasn't been great with all the times its been crashing during importing assets and the "General Error" popups.
I am using CS4 with the  latest patch

I'm not really the most qualified to answer your question. Since the obsolescence of DVD Studio Pro and the ability to program menus and Steve Jobs saying that BD is a "bag of hurt" and Macs not directly supporting BD, there's been no point for me getting involved with BD creation. Media players (like Roku) will win (IMO.)
Does the disc you made at least play from your Samsung burner?
AVCHD discs are playable on blu-ray players and your final file size is small enough to fit on a regular DVD-r disc.  Have you tried just making an AVCHD disc on DVD-r?
You can actually burn blu-ray directly from FCPX OR you can create an AVCHD disc (just select the appropriate Output Device from the Settings tab in the Share dialog.) Simply Share to Blu-ray (you might have to Add Destination from the Share popup menu.) Does burning directly from FCPX make a difference? (I'd hate to have you sacrifice a 25g disc though... that's why I'd suggest trying the AVCHD disc first.)
[I'm sure other people have had better luck, but I have never had a Sony product that I could recommend to anyone. From old CD players to HD TV, everything Sony I ever bought turned to junk... except maybe one of the walkmans which I only keep around for extended blackouts (like hurricanes). After the TV, I finally learned my lesson. I would suspect the players as faulty before suspecting the disc as a coaster especially if it plays from the Samsung burner.]

  • Edge keeps resetting composition size ( not really responsive experiment )

    Hello all,
This is more a question to the adobe edge animate team i guess rather than the community.
I recently had to do a project in adobe edge animate. I noticed the scale/responsiveness/resize is not really fitting my requirements, so i decided to tweak the resizing a bit. I wanted to achieve a fully responsive layout starting from x:0,y:0 ( top-left ), so the composition is always shown at 100% width & height.
The problem with the current animate scaling is that , it always has blank/white spaces on the sides. Even if using the BOTH option in the composition settings it always fits( scale ) the content just by one of the dimensions( the bigger fitting one ). It would be either by height or by width , but not both. The other dimension is compensated with blank space.
I made it work. Here's the demo. It's not completed and not sure if it will be because.. When the stage/composition loads, stars resizing(drag) the window. You'll notice that the stage resizes correctly and all of a sudden a smile starts appearing on anyone face, but unfortunately every time a user clicks a button ( or any action is executed ) the runtime resizes the main app again to it's original dimensions, breaking the fullscreen resize. For example , click on the black button NEXT , and you'll see the stage resized again with the edge resize logic
I'm attaching my resize logic immediately after the resizing of the edge animate( binding it to the window resize ), that's why everytime a user resizes the window the resize is correct. The aspect ratio is preserved everywhere and everything works as I wanted, but for some strange reason for me everytime an action ( timeline action/trugger ) , or even a button action/trigger, the resize logic block is executed.
So i guess my questions are:
1.Why does edge animate resize the wrappers and the composition everytime an action is executed ? Isn't this also a performance problem?
2.is there a way to stop this behaviour. I even made the composition non responsive hoping for even better result. In this case only my logic would be executed instead of two times for each resize event ( edge resize & my resize )
3.Is there any way to overload the edge resize method or any way to make this work( stop animate to resize the stage and wrappers for every action )
4.Also.. currently there is a resize initially so the stage is also resized on first view without resizing the window. but again i guess, because there are actions in my stage they are resetting the first resize aswell. I guess this one will not be a problem if the previous issue can have a workaround somehow.
    Thanks a lot..

    Hi Dalex,
    1. You need to know that Edge animate handles the responsive scaling by using css scaling the stage div element along X and Y axes by the same amount so that the aspect ratio is maintained. And that's the reason, when you apply responsive scaling value to both, Edge checks which of the attribute (height or width) fits the whole screen, and depending upon that it applies the scaling with aspect ratio maintained.
    2. By looking at the demo, I think that you want to have responsive scaling such that the game fits the whole screen along width and height. If I am thinking right, then that way, I think it will have a bad user experience if the user resize the window more in one direction, then you will loose the aspect ratio.
    3. So, what I would recommend is that you use "responsive scaling"=> "height or both", and "Center Stage"=>"horizontal or both". This way you'll have empty white space on either side but will have good user experience. Also, this way, you no longer need to use any extra code to handle responsive scaling yourself, and responsive scaling will work even after clicking buttons(as in your case).
    4. But still, if you don't like step#3, then you will have to create the whole anomation in Edge with units as "%" instead of "px". But in your case, it won't look good if user resizes browser window more in one direction.
Let me know if that helps.

  • External Hard Drive is not being recognized by Firewire 400

    Hi everyone,
I update my Mac OS X (Leopard) last night, so this morning when I was going to connect my External Hard Drive (EDD) to my MacBook; the Firewire, which I normally used through Firewire 400, did not recognized my EDD. However, I tried by connecting using the USB option and it recognized the EDD working perfect. Thus, I would like to know how do I turn the Firewire 400 on/available, since it seems not being working properly.
    Thanks a lot,
    M
    Macbook (Intel) early 2007.

if you have the power supply that comes with the external, use that if you haven't use it instead of rely on bus powered port.
connect your external, click blue apple on top left corner > about this mac > click more and on system profiler click firewire, and see if your external detected there.
You can try to reset PRAM to refresh your hardware behavior too:

  • New hard drive does not get recognized by OS X server 10.6

Xserve disk utility does no see the new HD. It is not HD issue as I have tested drive in other carrier, switched drive in different bays, booted from Xserve 10.6 dvd and 10.6 Server image in our net boot. Drive is not seen by disk utility. Even put in an Apple original (Mac Pro) HD. We have verified that. memory, HDD carrier and HD Bay are not defective.

Thanks John for the reply. I tried different new hard drives as well as a HD from Mac Pro server.I did try drive in different bays. Other 2 drives in the Xserve are recognized in all bays.I even switced HD carrier. Nothing seems to work. I found the following notes in the Xserve manual. I could not fully understand that. May be you can help me understand this.
Xserve (Late 2006) includes three hard drive bays on the front panel. Hard drives come as
modules, known as Apple drive modules (ADMs), attached to carriers; they are removed from or
installed in the Xserve as a unit. ADMs have been available from Apple in various capacities for
all Xserve and Xserve RAID models, and in multiple interface types. Xserve G4 and Xserve RAID
use parallel ATA (PATA) ADMs, and Xserve G5 uses serial ATA (SATA) ADMs. Xserve (Late 2006) can
use SATA ADMs, and ADMs with a new, third interface type known as serial attached SCSI (SAS).
It is important to understand ADM forward compatibility and backward compatibility with older
Xserve models, since some combinations of ADM and Xserve or RAID work properly while other
combinations do not. The following table summarizes this compatibility.
Xserve G4 Xserve RAID Xserve G5 Xserve

    Perfect Solution to Problem:
    Precautions:
1.Create your recovery DVD's from recovery partition before proceding, or order them from hp so as in case of any error or in worst case system can be set to factory restore.
    2.BACK UP YOUR DATA.
3.FOLLOW ON YOUR OWN RISK , NO RESPONSIBILTY FOR DATA LOSS , SYSTEM CRASH, OR LOSS OF RECOVERY PARTITION.
4.Hopefully you have read this , if any consequences arises take it on your part , nothing to do with it, you can leave the rest of reding part if not ready,

    Important informations !
Before you will do anything please create a set of recovery discs and back up all important data.
Both these steps will save you a lot of troubles if something will go wrong.
                Resource:
             From experience
Remember that if you will decide to use the recovery discs or the F11 option to restore the PC to its originalcondition, all partitions which were created by you will be lost and all the data which were stored on them willalso be lost.
    Introduction:
Below screenshot shows pre-configured partitions on HP notebook with pre-loaded Windows 7.
As you see mounted HDD has four primary partitions:
C - partiton with the operating system.
HP_TOOLS - partition which allow to use diagnostic tools after pressing F2 on startup.
RECOVERY - partiton which allows to recover system by pressing F11 on startup.
SYSTEM - active partition which boots the operating system.
Here begins our problem. A standard partition table is only able to store information about four partitions.
This means that a hard disk could have a maximum of four partitions. The four standard partitions are oftencalled the primary partitions.
To deal with this limitation we may:
----> Delete hp tools partiton , and create new logical partion, BUT RECOVERY MEDIA SET HAVE BEENCREATED BEFORE......
    PROCESS:
    Note:
    Please perform each operation individually.
Using several operations at one time may end with fatal error.
1.Hope you have your recovery media , recovery media dvd set and DRIVER DVD,if not then please get it first for safety..
    2. Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition.
3.Please back all of your data on HARDDISK before proceding.......
4.Go to START> COMPUTER > RIGHT CLICK ON IT > MANAGE
5.A window opens, select disk management from it , given on left hand side....
6.It will display your harddisk partitions as displayed in image.....carefully locate HP_TOOLS Partition in given table.....
7.Right click on HP_TOOLS Partition and Delete it.........it will prompt for response say yes.........
8.Now must have left with 3 partitons.........HP_TOOLS have been deleted...
    9.Now action time...........
10.Start Minitool Partition wizard.......it will diaplay your partitons.........select C: partition......right click on it .....select option move/resize...
11.New dialog box appears displays currents stats use the drag corners on top to reduce size for C: drive ......set the new size according to use..........But new size must not be less than 150 gb to avoid any data loss.....
12.leave rest of options intact.........click ok...........this will return you to minitool partiton wizrd home screen........click on apply at leftmost top corner..........it asks for permission say yes........then it displays that drive is in use you need to restart............
    13.Click on Restart Computer........
14.Your Computer will restart in Mini tool partition boot mode dont press any key...........after loading it will start processing and shrinking............then copying data...........it will restart automatically after progress is done 100%..........be patient.........it takes upto 5-10 mins......
15.If every thing goes fine your computer will start normally.........then go to START> COMPUTER > RIGHT CLICK ON IT > MANAGE
    16. New window opens, select disk management from it , given on left hand side....now you can see your C: partition has been reduced in size according to your size specified...........and unallocated space have been created along by C: partion.
