Hard disk 303

hi, i need some help on my hp Presario CQ62 laptop, i have windows 7 starter pack OS, even after doing a reformat it still usually displays a blue screen or black display on log in just a few days after a reformat, and i would do a hard disk test it would always display a "hardisk error 303". what should i do?

Hi,
The failure ID will either be a Smart or Disk Self Test failure - both would indicate that your Hard Drive is failing and will need to be replaced.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know.
Let us know how it goes!

  • Hard Disk 1 Quick (303)

There are many cases of this HDD failure, but mine a little different and I can't find any information on it.
The computer was working fine and I wanted to reformat. (I reformat with USB not DVD) Upon booting from USB, it started and I chose language and hit install now. If you are familiar with Win7 Installation, you'll know that after hitting Install now it goes to screen that allows you to choose which partition to install on. But it never got to that screen. After click Install now it stayed on a screen that said "Setting up windows" and sat there for like 30 minutes so I decided to restart it.
Now on restart it wont even recognize the HDD or something. On a hard-drive test (F4 after hitting ESC) it keeps giving me:
    Hard Disk 1 Quick (303)
    Hard Disk 1 Full (303)
    Hard Disk SMART Passed
I just did the etst again and now it says:
    Hard Disk 1 Fault
    Hard Disk 1 Fault
    Hard Disk SMART Passed

Well, I'm sorry that you feel that way but failing hard drives do not get better.  If it's less than a year old, you might check to see if you're still under warranty so that HP replaces the drive under yoru warranty terms.

  • Hp pavilion dv6-6113cl entertainment pc windows 7 hard disk error 303 305

Hi, my PC stopped working a few months ago. I have trying to find a way to fix it, but with no luck. A few weeks ago, I decided to buy the recovery disks from Hp. I did, and they came in the mail a few days ago. I use them, but all that pops up is a purplish screen(instead of what should be blue) with a cursor and that's about it. I did a hard disk test and it said hard disk quick 303 and full 305. Can someone help me please?

    Hi:
Those errors indicate that you need to replace the hard drive, which is why the recovery disks won't work.
You should purchase a hard drive of the same size or larger capacity than the one that came with your PC or the recovery disks won't work on a smaller capacity hard drive than what came with your PC.

  • Hard disk test failed-Hard disk 1 quick (303) for my HP mini 110-3700ca PC.

    Operation system Windows 7 32-bit.
After a tragic accidental "bump" on the table (I didn't even think it's that serious..), the computer start to slow down significantly, and when I tried to restart it, it shows:
    Windows Error Recovery
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
It recommend me to Launch Startup Repair, but since HP mini doesn't have a CD-Rom... It shows error status: 0xc0000225.
It's kind of obvious that the bumping might damaged the hard disk, so I tried to run hard disk check, and "hard disk 1 quick (303)" was all I got.
I've put a lot of files on my netbook, and I'm quite desperate to see it working again. Please help!!
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Well, that's very sad, could be due to physical damage too. Anyway, please do a HDD self test:
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Keep tapping the F10 key when the HP logo appears. This will take you to Bios Setup Utility.
    3. Select the Diagnostic tab.
    4. Select the "hard drive self test" option and press enter to perform the test.
Note: This test takes at least 40 minutes (with luck)
Pass - The hard drive is not damaged, you can recover data.
Fail - the hard drive is damaged and may need to be replaced, no choice.

  • Cq57 error msg hard disk 1 quick 303

My start up memory test passes yet i get error msgs "hard disk 1 quick 303" and "hard disk 1 smart 301" . I ordered recovery disk since mine did not work yet they also do not work. The new installation stops at 23% and I get a pop up that states " Reducer copy file fails from D:\PRELOAD\Base.swm to: C:\RM\Image\Base.swm.  Can any one help me or know if I must have a new hard drive?

    Hi,
The 301 and 303 error codes would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the recovery issue.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.

Originally shipped with a 250GB (7200RPM) SATA HDD.
You can replace it with any 2.5 in SATA HDD.  My recommendation: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148904
You'll also need to get the HP Recovery Media kit to reinstall the OS:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4125...

I believe you used ntfs for a reason. As far as I know, Windows isn't friendly with hdd filesystems others than fat or ntfs, so once you format your external harddrive to ext4, windows won't talk to it at all, unless you install some additional driver or software.
You have several possibilities to do:
    1) You could use FAT32, it's kind of a dumb filesystem, linux, mac and windows can read and write to it, there are some limitations like file permisions or 4GB file size limit.
    2) You could make multiple partitions on your external harddrive, one with ntfs (for windows) and the other with some fs that is support natively in Linux and Mac, I believe only option would be HFS+. I'm not an expert, maybe somebody will correct me. Anyway, if you aren't going to connect your disk to Mac, than ext4 would be a good choice. But this approach with two different partions is kind of dumb, because usually you need the same data available on whatever platform.
    3) If I were you, I would continue using NTFS or FAT32. It's not ideal, but it's a price you have to pay for dealing with Windows systems.
    4) If there is any other smarter solution, I believe somebody will add it to responses bellow.
Anyway, it's weird that your problem persists. There has to be something wrong with your filesystem, otherwise ls wouldn't show you question marks in its output. Did you perform chkdisk via GUI? It has to say that either there wasn't any error with your fs, or that there was some error. We live (unfortunatelly) in binary computer world. I mean you can perform that command from shell, or however microsoft calls it, and if you run it in a proper configuration, it will tell you whether your fs is bad or not and perform needed repairs.
And how to format disk to ext4?
Backup your data, run as root fdisk /dev/yourexthdd (fdisk /dev/sdd), delete all partitions, create new ones, once you are done, write changes down. fdisk is pretty easy to use, don't be afraid of it. Then you have to create filesystem on each partition you created with fdisk, so if you created only one, run mkfs.ext4 /dev/yourexthddwithpartnumber (mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdd1). There are nice articles about doing these things on Arch Wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/File_Systems), don't be worried to read them

  • HP Pavilion dm1 4020 sd Hard Disk problem

    Hi
I've a problem with the hard disk of my pavilion dm1.
At the beginning I had problme with the whole system that started blocking from time to time.
windows just froze, all the system just forze and there was no way to recover.
After gettign annoyed I just resotred factory settings and the os from scratch.
The new os is now working but if I try a scandisk on the C: drive, it happend the same, the scandisk just stops after a while at stpe 5 of 5 and never finish.
So I'm starting thinking that thare is some hard disk failure, bad sector or so that froze the notebook, the same can have caused all of the issues I had before, when the disk had more data and maybe that specific sector was used by system files.
how can I check recover from this error?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The 303 error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the 'freezing' issue.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.

  • Hard disk drives and recovery systems

I have a Hp Pavilion g4-1016dx system, I have ran the system check and get a quick check  Hard Disk 1 303 message. I realize my hard disk is going out, my system did not come with a recovery disk upon purchase. Is there any way of downloading the recovery system to disk or a USB drive from a different computer? Also, I was told the hard disk is not completely shot, I had just downloaded pictures and other items the day before the HDD failure, is there any way to salvage these myself without having to pay someone $$$ to recover these items?
Any help is greatly appreciated as I am technology challenged.
    Thanks

    Hi,
First, regarding your existing files, try the following.
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your existing files.
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windo...
Another option would be to remove the HDD, place it in an external caddy - an example is on the link below - connect this to another PC and see if you can access your files.
    External HDD Caddy 2.5".
Secondly, regarding reinstalling Windows 7 on a replacement HDD, there are Two options available.
    1.  You can order a replacement set of Recovery Discs using the link below - these will reinstall the operating system, all required drivers and nearly all of the original software ( the exception often being trials of MS Office ).  They will also re-create all the original partitions, including the Recovery Partition.
    Order HP Recovery Discs.
    2.  Another option you could consider is to create your own Windows 7 installation disc.
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
An example of a COA Label can be seen Here.
Also, if possible, back-up the swsetup folder that can be found at the root of your C drive on your failing HDD.
You can create a Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the same version that originally came with your notebook - this is listed as Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source ( Digital River ).
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.
    http://www.kodyaz.com/articles/how-to-activate-windows-7-by-phone.aspx
Regarding the drivers etc you need, if you were able to back-up the swsetup this will contain all the software and driver installers for your notebook - if you weren't able to, drivers and software you may need can also be found Here.

  • Hp Pavilion dv4 Notebook Hard Disk error

Everytime I attempt to boot up my laptop, I am greeted with: "Hard Disk Error, Please run the Hark Disk Test in System Diagnostics, Hard Disk 1 (3F1)" Upon running the Hard Disk test, Quick test returns "Hard Disk 1 Fault", and Full test returns Hard Disk 1 Fault, SMART check returns as passed. What happened? Do I need to buy a new laptop?
Edit: After pressing escape to exit, up at the top left it says: Hard Disk Test Failed, Gard Disk 1 Quick (303), Hard Disk 1 Full (305)

No you just need to replace the hard drive. Can we have the full model number? A good hard drive is going to cost $75 or so and a super fast solid state drive will be maybe $150+. You might still be able to migrate/clone data. You might also look at the C:\ drive in My Computer or This PC and see how full it is. If you delete some stuff off it might take away the error message although doubtful.

  • Mini 200-4200 - Hard Disk Error

    Hello,
I have: HP Mini 200-4200, pr nr B3R47EA#ABU, System Board ID 338D, Win 7 (factory installed) ...what else.
I´m not very computer literate, first of all. And second, I´m in Nicaragua on a gap year - little resources around.
The Mini is under warranty, I bought it in Oct 2012, London, it´s been gradually slowing down, which I contributed to having maybe too much stuff on it.. Until, something happend few days ago. After turning on and thinking for few seconds, it makes a little "bing", and showes "Hard Disk Error", Please rund the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.
When I do as it says, in a second (literally, with no thinking time), comes up:
    Primary Hard Disk Self Test
    Quick Test
    Hard isk 1 Quick (303)
    Primary Hard Disk Self Test
    Full test
    Hard disk 1 Full (305)
    SMART check to Exit Testing
    Hard Disk SMART Passed
So I press the Esc to exit and then comes up:
    "Hard Disk Test" Failed.
Then I did the F10 tapping in the beginning (read in one advice post) to get to Bios:
I went to Diagnostics and pressed Primary Hard Disk Self Test.  It doesn´t seem to do the test because in the same second as I press Enter, box comes with "Hard Disk 1 Quick (303)" , "ok", ...in the background I can see the Short Test Executing 0% Complete, Estimated time unknown...but I think it doesn´t do it at all. When I press the ok, nothing happens.
I´m not sure what to do. Or where is my nearest HP representative. Is there on in Managua? (or Esteli would be closer).
AND - is there a possibility to salvage any files?
Not sure if this is of any importance, when I go to the Diagnostics Log, the numbers that are listed there are 0303, 03F1, 0305. Repeating.
Please help to save my little Mini, it has been a good companion.
    Thanks,
    Maire

Thanks for the reply - I will call the local HP support (Nicaragua) tomorrow. And will post if stuff gets solved.
However - HOW CAN I SALVAGE THE INFO?
I´ve heard that warranty doesn´t cover that. But then again, if I ask a computer repairs place to do it, I risk the warranty? I´m not sure if HP allows to do it (in Lenovo the hard disk can be removed without trouble... I´m told...)
I also have additional Accidental Damage Protect Service w Pickup and Return...which I hastily did before travelling...and now I can´t remember what it covers besided "spilling the odd coffee cup" ....I can´t find any other terms and conditions other than the States version....
Any ideas how I can salvage the info?

  • G61-110SA Hard disk 1 full (305)

Hi   My laptop (HP G61-110SA), which is now out of warranty, took a very slight knock and now it wont start up properly .  It starts but just goes through to a screen with 2 options: "Launch StartupRepair (recommended)" or "Start Windows Normally" (which just goes through to a blue windows screen and doesn't progress further).   If "Launch Startup Repair" is selected, it goes through a series of "HP Recovery  Manager" screens but only allows me to select one option - "Open a Command Prompt" which is useless to me as I don't know what command to type! I have run the Diagnostic tests and have the following results:Hard Disk Smart - PassMemory Test - Pass Hard Disk 1 Full (305)Hard Disk 1 Quick (303) Does this mean I definitely need a new Hard Drive or is there anything else I can do? (there are no strange noises from the laptop when it is on). Any advice/info would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Hi Marie, I think you should be able to use either option you mention. 1.  If you wish to restore the Back-up Image you have, try the following procedure. If you don't already have one, use another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue CD.  Download the relevant ISO from the links below. Windows 7 32bit Windows 7 64bit You should use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO to a CD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, or if you already have this, insert the CD into the notebook and restart to boot from it.  Select the Repair option. Now follow the guide on the following link starting at Method 3 to restore the Image to the new HDD. http://www.shivaranjan.com/2009/05/21/windows-7-how-to-restore-windows-7-partition-or-hard-disk-partitions-from-a-system-image/ 2.  If for any reason this does not work, as long as your Mums notebook is the exact same Model and operating system as yours, her Recovery Discs should work for your notebook. Regards, DP-K

  • Having startup prob. on my compaq laptop, failed start. up test with hard disk failure help?

I have a  compaq presario, CQ70-120US , with windows vista
I haven't made any changes to it,  I took it to my mothers over the holidays and it was working fine.  Like an idiot, i was impatient during a shut down and did a hard kill cause wanted to turn back on to do something else.  After the hard kill i turned back on and it went to black screen ,  then a blue screen with curser, then eventually gave an error box saying Loadkey failed 999.
so after trying the hitting f10 at startup and doing hard disk test (which failed)
    memory test passed
then did f8 to start in safe mode and that ran almost all day with no success
last thing i tried was hitting f2 at startup and running the start up test,   again memory test passed, then i get this
    " startup test failed
    hard disk 1 quick  (303)
so not sure what to do at this point.   i have no recovery disks but if need be i will order them, but wanted to know if this was fixable without doing that before i go that route.
This computer was given to me and within one week i messed it up.   go figure
Please help if you can, thanks in advance to anyone who tries to help
    Katie

    Hi,
Please try last resource, do a HDD self test:
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Keep tapping the F10 key when the HP logo appears. This will take you to Bios Setup Utility.
    3. Select the Diagnostic tab.
    4. Select the "hard drive self test" option and press enter to perform the test.
Note: This test takes at least 40 minutes.
Pass - The hard drive is not damaged.
Fail - the hard drive is damaged and may need to be replaced.
    Regards.
