Hard disk: bought 160GB, shows only 149GB

Hello,
I searched around the discussion forums, but did not find any hint.
I bought a new MacBook Pro with 160GB hard disk (built to order). When the machine came, I just started up, configured, migrated my data from my old G4 Powerbook and everything went fine.
Now, while I am preparing for Leopard upgrade, I saw that the disk drive tells me
that it has a total capacity of 149GB. But I bought an 160GB.
So, where has the 11GB go?
Any hint? Swap space?
Thanks a lot and have a nice day

This is to be expected. Hard disk manufacturers advertise the disk capacity in base 10 units. Your computer uses / reports the disk size in base 2 units. As drive size increases, the "lost" (not really though) space will increase as well.
There is a good explanation here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte

  • Thinking about upgrading my Powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB

I am thinking about upgrading my powerbook G4 hard disk to 160GB, or even larger if possible...
I have checked the macsales.com website and found this seagate 160GB, is it a good choice? Can anyone suggest a better deal or a better choice...?
but I also notice one thing... it says that any powerbook model prior to 2003 might not support the any hard disk over 120G....
So I am wondering is my powerbook G4 15inch 1.25GHz SuperDrive model able to have a 160GB hard drive...?
    Thanks a lot!!!!!

The 1.25Ghz Powerbook came out in fall 2003, so if what MacSales says is true, then it should work.

  • Since updating my Mac to 10.8.4 any external hard disk doesn't show on Finder sidebar (but shows on desktop). Anyone else have the same problem?

Since updating my Mac to 10.8.4 any external hard disk doesn't show on Finder sidebar (but shows on desktop). Anyone else have the same problem?
It's annoying because now I can't use Finder sidebar for drag and drop to thumb drive etc.
Thanks for your thoughts and help!

    Hi Barney-15E,
Thanks for your reply and suggestions!
It is set to show on the sidebar in Finder prefs and I tried toggling the setting multiple times but it didn't fix anything.
I went into Preferences (I'm Administrator) but the strange thing is I don't see com.apple.sidebarlists.plist anywhere in the folder. Not sure what that means..

  • Hard disk partition not showing up during window 7 install

    STOP - 0x00000116 error . I
want to install fresh OS from usb stick but the hard disk partition is not showing up. Only USB stick is getting detected.
Please help .. I have an interview and I need to fix this issue asap.

    Hi there,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that your hard drive is not showing up, presumably as a bootable partition. I am happy to help, but I need a bit more clarification of your problem. You mention a 0x00000116 error as well, which is normally part of a Blue Screen of Death. Does this happen regularly as well, or is that the real complaint, that you are getting the 0x code and a BLue Screen on startup?
That particular code is generally associated with a video driver problem.
Is the hard drive you are trying to install to, a new replacement hard drive or the original hard drive?
If you try to boot up the system, what error do you see?
Are there any repeating flashing LED patterns, or beeping patterns?
Assuming this is your original installed hard drive, did you try the recovery manager for the drive?

  • My Macbook Pro mid 2012 is not reading/connecting to my (working)external hard disk(also not showing in disk utility)

I connected my 500GB Storjet external hard drive to my mac(Mountain Lion) http://in.transcend-info.com/products/Catlist.asp?modno=325 but it is not connecting to it. Disk Utility is also not showing it. and the hard disk is working... My PS3, My Sony TV and my other laptop(win7) is detecting it... Also whenever it gets connected a blue light blinks, but It doesnt for mac. I have tried reformatting to both FAT32 and NTFS... Please help..
Also I sorta screwed my Mac so I had to do the internet recovery thing and only after that such problems occured, it was working fine before. So it installed Lion first and then Mountain Lion. It wasn't working on any of the OS.

Power down the Mac, Full power off. Connect the drive using the Y cable and then turn the Mac back on.
If it still doesn't show in at least Disk Utility then start checking your USB ports to see if both are working properly. Just plug in a USB thumb drive and that should show in both Finder and Disk Utility. If one of the ports isn't seeing the thumb drive then that port is bad and the system needs to be services by Apple.

  • 10.2.8 installation and external hard disk does not show on desktop

I just reinstalled OS X 10.2 (by erasing the hard disk during installation) and upgraded with the Combo pack to 10.2.8 . This is an iMac G4 1GHz with a 17-inch display. I tried connecting a Western Digital MyBook with 500Gb through both the USB port and through FireWire. In both cases the hard drive does not appear on the desktop BUT does appear in the Disk Utility program and in the System Information window. Finder, therefore, doesn't display the drive. The MyBook drive is formatted to Windows FAT 32. Before I reinstalled OS X 10.2.8, this machine was running 10.3.9 and the drive did appear (I'm still searching for the 10.3 disk).
Is this an issue with OS X 10.2.8? Given the drive is detected by the System Information section and by the Disk Utility, is there a way of forcing Finder to display it (and allow access)?

Sometimes I have found that I have to turn of the ext. hd and then reconnect the firewire cables. there is a cylinder that is an inch away from one of the firewire plugs, which should be connected toward the tower and the other firewire plug toward the ext. hd. have patience, sometimes it will show up. also a restart maybe...

  • USB Hard Disk does not show up

If I open Airport Utility and go to Base Station-->Manual Setup-->Disks, I can see my Maxtor Hard Drive. However, I do not see it on my desktop or in the Airport Disk Utility. Is there something I need to do to access the hard disk? I gave it a password during the initial setup, but I cannot even see the drive anywhere except in Airport Utility.

Yes I did, but the problem was actually just solved by simply shutting my MBP down and restarting. For some reason it wasn't showing up, but now it does. Thanks for the help though. I do appreciate it.

  • I bought about 350 musics on iTunes but when I click on the link to see the musics I bought, it shows only 204 musics

I bought about 350 musics on iTunes since I started using iPhone, but when I click on the link to see the items I have bought, iTunes shows me only 204 musics. This is a problem that annoys me because I have authorized a new device where I'd like to listen to all musics I have bought. I have already turned on the automatic transferences on the iTunes preferences so that all musics, books and apps are automatically transferred to the device. Even so, iTunes continues to show only 204 musics and I am not able to see all musics I have bought.
So, is there anything I'm missing here? Is there other local on iTunes where I could see all musics I have bought instead of only a subset of them?
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Márcio

Just to better clarify what is happening: when I click on the link to show the musics I have bought on iTunes, musics that I had already bought some time ago do not appear anymore. So, I'm not able to download them anymore. For instance, in the set of the musics iTunes does not show me anymore there are 17 Peter Gabriel's musics. They are not shown and I cannot download them. So, how could I be able to download all musics I have bought instead of only 204 musics?
    Thanks again
    Márcio

  • External hard disk does not show in finder

WD usb external hard disk does not appear in finder.  Disk utility sees it and will mount/unmount and eject.  I ran repair disk util. and all is well but still does not appear in finder

Hey Hatter,  Thanx for the input.
Among other things I tried was a terminal routine someone suggested with no luck and new drivers/firmware for the drive, again, no luck.
I still don't know for sure what caused my problem, but I re-partitioned the drive and re-formatted it and that seemed to solve the provlem.  Sadly, I lost all my info that was backed up on that particular drive but hopefully it won't come back to bite me later.
    Cheers!!

  • Parts of Hard-drive files not showing, only on macbook?

Hey guys, I have a hard drive that has been running well until now. When I open a folder in Finder, which contains a large amount of files in it, only the first ten-ish are shown, the rest disappeared. But they are still there, because some missing files are music files imported into iTunes, and when I open iTunes, those "missing" music can still be played. Also, this problem doesn't appear on Windows, when I plug the hard drive on a Windows PC, everything is there again. Any idea what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

The Apple System Profiler shows all the correct info except the name is "unknown." The only 2 places that seem wrong are the desktop - no hard drive, and in Disk Utility. I don't know what it's called, but the line directly under the listed hard drive in Disk Utility (74.5 GB WDC WD800JB-00CRA1) should have the name of the hard drive (Macintosh HD) listed but it does not. It should look like this but with an icon of a hard drive in front of each line:
    74.5 GB WDC WD800JB-00CRA1
    Macintosh HD
The second line (Macintosh HD) is not there. The other hard drives have their names listed. Apple seems to think this is a problem but other than running Data Rescue and Disk Warrior (neither of which did anything) they have not given me any other suggestions.
The computer knows the hard drive is there but it won't let me access it. I have done, tried, and checked all the easy stuff. (Cables, any and every type of connection, restarting holding down option + apple + F + O and all the other restart variations with and without the OSX CD, and running "rescue" programs.) Nothing has worked. Short of an exorcism, I'm out of ideas.

  • Please help! My LG external hard disk is not showing in finder and trouble using disk utility

I used my LG external HDD  disk drive on my mac a couple of times but now it's not being recognised by my mac anymore and doesn't show up on finder.
I found the disk in disk utility and when i verified it, it said:

I clicked repair disk and it said:

I tried several other times to repair it by clicking repair but the same information kept popping up.
I'm also unable to erase or partition the disk. I have no important files on it so I don't mind deleting them all but i'm unable to do so using disk utility. Please advice on what to do or the steps to take from here. Thanks

  • Hard disk does not show in finder

WE had a system failure with our server instance a month back and since then, one of my internal HD's will not show in finder. It's also causing carbon copy pro to fail when trying to find it. I have verified it can be seen in the disk utility and from a terminal prompt. I rant this to confirm:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -f -a TextEdit
No matter what I do, i cannot see it. Verify and repair in disk util come up saying it's okay. I have selected show HDD's in finder preferences. A possibly related side effect is that my users, who can browse this over the network, cannot search in the directory.
Any help you can lend would be helpful.

Not partitioned - part of a raid. Was initially formatted, yes. THis has been in production for a couple of years and just dropped out. "THIS DISK" is the disk that vanish. I renamed it for forum purposes.

  • No Vista boot after old hard disk added, black screen only

My Vista machine had been running just fine for two years now till I decided to add an old hard drive (Quantum Fireball 30 Gb) from another computer.  It was installed and when I restarted the system the bios seemed to run fine (the drive was even recognized in the hardware section).  However, upon exiting the bios the screen now goes and stays black, except for a thin white line that flashes slightly diagonally across the top of the screen.  Even after removing the drive the same problem remains.  I have already attempted to try just about every possible change to my bios settings including the restoring optimized and fail safe settings.  About the only thing I have not tried is changing speeds or voltage settings.  Would this possibly be reason enough to try flashing the bios?

This post did not belong where you put. I moved it here and you can work at figuring out the actual problem. Don't even think of flashing the BIOS yet.

  • Reading files from local hard disk - Access Local Files Only

    Hi All,
I have a local flash file published as 'Access Local Files Only', to allow me to read from local filesystem.
What methods or classes can I use to read text and other files from the user's harddisk.
This is the first time I am trying to do something like this, all help is grealy appreciated.
    Thanks
    Andy

    Hi, thanks for the responses
I did some searching and found that the urlloader class is the right one for the job.
'Access Local Files Only' option is provided for this very purpose I believe.
If anyone has done something like this and have some sample code it would be awesome
    Cheers
