Hard disk crashed. Syncing with i Tunes
My HD crashed and I want to sync my i pod back with my i tunes library. When I log in to itunes there's a message indicating it will erase everything I currently have. How do I sync both libraries (apparent) on itunes?
When you get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

There is a new function in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.

How do I recover tunes from my iPod after a hard disk crash?
I've just received my PowerMac back after a hard disk crash and am having to reinstall all software etc.
My iPod obviously contains all the music I'd downloaded from the iTunes music store and all the CD's I'd loaded manually into iTunes.
I can't see any way of copying the tunes on my iPod back into my iTunes library...
Can anyone help?
I had to use a data recovery tool to recover data from my disk after the crash and it's going to be a really long job to sort out what's what...

My hard disk crashed and the backup of my library was not saved. Fortunatly my music files are on a seperate server. How can I sync my Playlists back in my library?
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
-
Fact:
1) Hard disk crashed
2) Replaced with a new and bigger drive
3) Installed iTunes
4) Connected my iPod Touch, clicked on Cancel on "Synced to another library...OK to erase message".
5) iTunes suggested upgrade to iOS4
6) Clicked OK on backup before upgrading
7) Upgrade result: OK
8) Selected Restore from Backup
9) All Apps OK, empty content. No music, no playlists, no movies, no podcasts.
Guess my mistake was, trusting that the backup before upgrading would work flawlessly. I do have a backup on an external hard drive, but is kind of old and is missing several iTunes purchased songs as well as movies.
Like many others, I had to try several times to get the backup/upgrade to work. When I click on "Restore from Backup" it gives me the option of Restoring from my iPod's name (you know the results) and one "unknown" backup. Should I try that one, just in case it has my library? Where can I look for that file in Windows? By the size, I'll know if that is the one that contains all my data. What backup does is save your settings on your touch, not your Library. So I guess that was a basic misunderstanding on your part.
Backing up your Library would have been a good idea before you installed the new hard drive, but you do have the slightly older one available to you. You can transfer that library to your current hard drive, tell iTunes that the computer is authorized (new hard drive or OS install is perceived as a new computer) and synch your content back on. Applications you may have lost can be downloaded again at no charge. Sometimes the iTunes people will allow you to redownload lost music and videos. -

Hard disk crash on my lap top......
the hard disk crashed on my lap top. I want to transfer the contents of my ipod to my new machine. I am sure this is pretty straight forward but want to make sure that i don't wipe the ipod contents in the process.
can anyone point me in the right direction please?
thanks in advance
philips freevents Windows XPIf your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes

Hard Disk Crash, Have Backup but still problems - Help!
Hello,
My mother board, power supply and hard disk crashed, but I had my iTunes backed up using Norton Ghost. After installing a new system board, power supply and hard disk, I installed the OS, installed iTunes 7 and then restored the library from backup.
Problem is that now I have a whole bunch of songs that have a ! icon. When I try to play them, iTunes says that it cannot locate the song.
Any ideas???
Also, I have not hooked my iPod up to this machine. Will iTunes have issues with this iPod or will it recognize it since the library I restored is from that iPod?
Thanks, JohnX-((I'v come to talk to myself.
It apears that it might be cuased by some software?
But y when i get some errors in memtest :-/, I dont know if i should rma or replace my ram.
Still looking for suggestions. -
Satellite C660-1CV - hard disk crashed in 2 days
I have purchased Toshiba laptop(C660-1CV) from a local dealer just before two days. I had loaded VMware along with couple of VMs and some other important software.
In spite of my company insisting for lenevo I had gone for Toshiba because I trust the brand and I have had real good experience with Toshiba. Today morning that is after two days of purchase of laptop the hard disk crashed and I got a black screen no OS prompt, nothing. My dealer said he cannot do anything I have to take it to Al Futtiam service center. The service center guy just re-connected the hard disk and it didnt work, he straight away made a statement that hard disk needs to be replaced and it will another 4 to 5 days. He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay 99 AED. Isnt that strange enough ??? My own laptop which is just 2 days old crashed and I have to pay for getting my data. The technical guy did not do any other troubleshooting except reconnecting the hard disk.
I want to escalate it to the right level in Toshiba. if anybody has any contacts in UAE region pass it on to me.Hi pmavani,
Im sorry to hear that that HDD died after 2 days that not normally but such things can happen, especially with HDD that is a mechanical part. But dont worry this case is covered by warranty so you can get a new HDD for free from an authorized service provider and as the guy said it takes 4 or 5 days. Thats ok so the notebook can repaired within one week.
> He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay 99 AED. Isnt that strange enough ???
No, thats not strange enough. Warranty doesnt cover backup, you have to do this yourself. Thats the reason why you should install and configure backup software before you do anything. -
Safari Crashes On Startup after restore from Time Machine after hard disk crash
I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.4, 4 GB memory , 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. My 160 GB hard disk crashed two weeks ago and was replaced by the apple store. I was backed up on a 500 GB Time Capsule and restored my system from that source. Everything works appropriately except Safari (Version 5.1.6).
Steps taken to date based on discussions here:
1. Updated all software
2. Booted in safe mode, still crashes
3. Booted as guest, still crashes
Any additional help I can get would be appreciated. In the meantime I have been using Firefox, but all the links that go from email or browswer messages load Safari and it crashes every time.
Thanks, G. Silver

I think I solved this. From another question on the forum, I found the following:
Download and install Safari 6 from this link (it's the link used by software update to download Safari6 for Lion 10.7.4) :
http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/37/23/041-5058/lr5tynbldi18zcrqo8a8uq88 rnjushqliu/Safari6Lion.pkg
I did this and Safari 6.0 is now up and running without crashing and all my bookmarks etc were preserved.
Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction. I would stll be interested in why Software Update wouldn't download Safari 6.0.
All the best,

How do I transfer iPhone content back to laptop after hard disk crash
My old hard disk crashed a week ago. How do I transfer all my iPhone content (music, apps, podcasts, ...) back to my laptop after having a new hard disk installed?
I do have all the backups, but this means that I'd have to individually look up each App, then download it again. Isnt there a simpler way? Doesnt Apple keep an index of some sort of all the items I have purchased, so that a one-click procedure may restore the latest versions of all of them with ease?
A few years ago I adopted the strategy to keep everything on the web. With now over 20 GB on the web, it just doesnt make sense to do this any more. After the mess up with my hard disk, as far as my documents go, every time I edit any of them, I simply back them up individually onto 2 separate external drives, and burn them on CDs once a week. Having had 4 major hard disk crashes since 1989, I dont really trust automated backup programs any more. I'm much happier if I know where EXACTLY my documents are at any point in time. -
My hard disk crashed and I cannot find out how to "contact customer service" other than this forum. The website seems to just take me in a circle. I need to de-activate a license but cannot access the software due to a crashed hard drive. Please help.

Problems restoring IPhoto Library after hard disk crash
I had a terminal hard disk crash a couple of months ago. The drive was replaced and new (well older) OS was installed. I have since updated to the current versions of the OS and Iphoto to iPhoto'09. My Documents and Pictures folders had been backed-up separately using Apple's Backup 3. My Documents folder was restored flawlessly, but I have been unable to restore my Pictures folder.
I spent some time with MobleMe support and we were unable to resolve the problem. My iPhoto library was backed-up on 2 occasions: the first was a FullBackup and the second an IncrementalBackup. When I run restore I get the following message:
"Begin restore at 2008-12-02 20:06:45 -0330 An internal application error has occurred. The disk archive could not be attached. End restore at 2008-12-02 20:06:49 -0330"
The MobleMe assistant thought it may have something to do with my user name changing when the new OS was installed. We played with this for a while but got no joy.
MobleMe next suggested that I do a manual restore:
"At this point, it sounds like you will need to try to manually restore it. These errors, such as "An internal application error has occurred. The disk archive could not be attached," can occur if one of the increments in a backup has become damaged and cannot be opened. Here are instructions for manually restoring files:"
Using these instructions they provided I have been able to access most of my photos, but I have not rebuilt my iPhoto Library yet. I have read most of the related posts on this form and there are some helpful tips. The problem I have is that I'm not certain how to bring the pictures back into iPhoto while maintaining some of the organization. My photos are spread across 7 IncrementalBackup files (packages?). Within each of these packages there is an Originals folder. Within the original folders there are several subfolders, and some of these subfolders occur across 2 or more of the Incrementalbackup packages. For example Originals:2005 subfolder occurs in 6 of the 7 backup files.
Finally my questions:
1) I'm still hopeful that I might be able to restore from the backup.
2) If not, I need to know how to recompile the the Originals subfolder system so I can maintain some the the organization, and then how I reipmort back into iPhoto'09
Thanks
ScottScott
That Library is gone. What you need to do now is start over with a new Library.
There is no way to restore your Albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc. This is a completely new beginning.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library' .
From each of the Originals folders in each of the Back Up packages drag the folders of images to the iPhoto Window. Iphoto will import them and make Event folders from them. It will ask you do you want to import duplicates. Say no.
Only import from the Originals folders. Otherwise you will get massive duplication.

I cannot eject my new ipod classic after sync with i-tunes on my pc due, it states, to open files being used by another application. What does this mean? How can I get my ipod to eject?
If it's a one-time "glitch," you can try restarting your computer with the iPod still connected. Try ejecting again after the restart.
If the problem recurs, you may have a process running (other than iTunes) that is accessing the iPod's storage. When connected, the iPod's "disk" is like other mounted volumes. This process may be some type of utility that continously monitors your mounted volumes for security reasons, such as to prevent access by malware.
If you know of such a program that you have running in the background, there may be a setting to exclude your iPod's disk. -
After hard disk crash: How can I get my fotos from iPod to hard disk?
As I said my hard disk crashed. (iPod 3.gen. )
So now I have my photos only on the iPod but I can't get them on my hard disk.
(If I would sync my iPod they would be deleted...)
Do you have/know a good programme (free), that copies them back on the hard disk??
Thanks a lot
truckdriver64f you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here, it's completely free: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
If not, there are a few programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. I don't know of any "free" ones but if your photos are of value to you then paying for a program makes perfect sense. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
iPodPhotoCopy Windows only
CopyPodPhoto Windows only
Tansee iPod Transfer Photo Windows only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
TouchCopy Mac and Windows Versions (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible) -
My hard disk crashed, with allthe creative cloud apps on it, how do I reinstall on new disk?
Once you have set up your computer again with the new disk just sign in with your Adobe ID to the Creative Cloud Apps page at https://creative.adobe.com/apps. Click on the Download link for an application you want to install and the Adobe Application Manager (AAM) should first install and it will then handle installing the application. After that you can click the Install links in AAM for the other applications you want to install.

Hard disk crash: How do I restore my old Aperture Library?
My hard disk crashed last Friday. I was able to retrieve the Aperture Library file onto an external hard drive. I have reinstalled my system software and all applications including Aperture. I am having difficulty trying to update Aperture with my old library. I have tried dragging it over into my Pictures folder. It asks me if I want to "rebuild" but then it freezes up.
Any suggestions?Yes, the old file is called "Aperture Library". I've moved it to my internal hard drive, into a new folder. I went to preferences and chose that as my new location. I quit Aperture and reopened. It said,
"Warning. There was an error opening the database for the library "%@".
Error: %@"
It then gave me a choice to Rebuild Later/ Rebuild Now. So I told it to rebuild now. The program is still open. Nothing seems to be happening. Does it take a long time to rebuild? How can I tell if it is still rebuilding?
