  • Non system disk error or disk error when turned on

I have a BIG problem with my laptop, it doesnt load my operating system! :dead:
I have a 100GB hard drive in my laptop and it was working perfectly fine until a blue screen came up and turned my laptop off!! I turned it back on and it came up with a message saying: ''non-system disk or disk error; Replace and strike any key when ready'' Before that, I have the RAM of 256MB . The RAM themselves had a test and showed no problem at all. When I did go into bios, it didnt give me an option where my laptop hard drive could do a self test, when it should have. So i decided to buy a new hard drive which was 160GB seagate. I put it into my laptop and had my Windows XP CD ready to put into my CD drive to install. BUT...........the same message came up ''non-system disk or disk error; Replace and strike any key when ready'' and didnt read my CD. It keeps doing it now and doesn't read anything from the CD SOMEONE PLEASE...............HELP!!!..................!!!! Does anyone know what I am talking about? If so, please help. Thanks

I kind of know but we really need to know what kind of laptop you are working on here. Seems like it is an old one with XP and 256 megs of RAM.

  • Bootcamp: "can't partition the disk" error but disk space is not the issue

Hi all - I'm attempting to install Windows via the BootCamp assistant on a new 27" iMac. When trying to partition the disk with BootCamp Assistant, I get the message:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
The iMac does have a single volume, and it is Journaled. In researching this online, it appears that the culprit is generally having too little disk space for Boot Camp Assistant to do its job. But in this case I have a new computer with a 2 TB drive and 1.4 GB of free space, and I'm trying to create only a 250 GB NTFS partition.
I'm really not eager to delete my 2 TB drive and restore 600 GB from a Time Capsule backup unless it is absolutely necessary. Is there some other explanation for this or solution?

I have solved the issue and wanted to follow back up to record the resolution. In my case, it turned out to be an error with the disk catalog record. While trying all available options, I decided to reboot my computer from the Snow Leopard installation disc and run Disk Utility. A "verify disk" test reported that the disk needed to be "repaired." After using "Repair Disk" and restarting, Boot Camp Assistant was able to partition the disk successfully.
Thanks for the other suggestions - I think they will be useful for others.

  • Disk Error during Disk Utility Repair Permissions

I sympathise if you are on dialup! Here is the post you need (originally posted by Mac Fool):
Just to catalogue the solutions listed above
Here's what I did, and it worked fine.
    1) Move iTunes onto the Desktop.
    2) Run Disk Utility
    3) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
    4) empty Trash.
    5) move iTune from Desktop back to 'Applications'.
Hey presto. you should now be able to repair permissions again.

    Just as Beavis posted above
BTW, the link "here" does take me directly to the post, but clearly it loads the entire topic first.

  • Disk Error - Bad Disk Message - Can't play DVD

Yet another "disk won't play" issue.
I'm using DSP 4.1.2 to create an HD DVD, from an uncompressed 1280x720 QT movie.
The final encoded disk will play fine on a Mac, but not on either of two DVD players I've tried. I'm using Sony media.
The disk contains a folder named HVDVD_TS,if that tells you anything.
My preferences are set to HD DVD Standard, under the PROJECT tab.
No menu is used, but the clip loops as intended. It plays automatically, too, just as I programmed FIRST PLAY. The DVD looks fantastic on a Mac G5.
So, now I'm stuck. And I have to get several copies out of here QUICK.
Any suggestions? One of the DVD players I tested on was a current Phillips brand, the other was a PlayStation II.
    Thanks so much.

HD DVDs will play on HD DVD Players and NOT on SD or blu-ray players.

  • Hard drive error on boot: HD6 3F6

My PC is usually left on all the time.  I recently went away on holiday for 2 weeks and powered off (it is winter here so the house is cold a lot of the time - this may be relevant as colder conditions seem to make the following issue worse).  When I returned and powered on I got a blue screen hard drive error message "HD6 3F6".  I now get this message at every reboot, but also about every 12 hours on average the computer goes off by itself and I get it again, though it varies from a few hours to a few days.  I follow the instruction to launch diagnostics F2 and have run all sorts of tests - every time it passes the tests so I proceed to boot normally.  This process now seems to take a lot longer than it used to, but at least the PC does boot as normal.  The PC is only about 15 months old and I had to have the motherboard replaced a few months ago under warranty as a BIOS upgrade killed it.  I have had a few issues with Windows Explorer shutting itself down a lot recently.  Please advise what to do, thanks.

Hello , I have read your post on how your desktop computer is displaying an error message "HD6 3F6" on a blue screen, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! Since the hard drive diagnostics indicated in this document came up with no issues, I recommend following the steps in this document on Computer Locks Up or Freezes (Windows 8). This should help correct the appearance of a blue screen.  If the issue continues, please contact our technical support for further assistance in this matter by clicking the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Intel Gen 2 SSD 80GB Disk errors- OSX 10.6.2

    Dear All,
I have 2 of the Intel Gen2 SSD's, I have had them in Raid0 since I purchased them, since 10.6.2 I have had continual disk errors in Disk Utility, I decided 10 days ago to ditch the Raid0 and use them singly, I did a fresh instal of SL, and then copied my apps from my Time capsule, all was fine but now I'm getting disk errors again, and really slow performance specifically on save dialogs from Word and from print to PDF, I have to boot from sl disk once every 48 hours to repair the disk, I am at the end of my tether with this, my SSD is running the latest firmware, my home folder has been moved from the SSD to my WDC black Raid0, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm tempted to go back to Caviar Black, SSD/Intel/Apple are not ready for the playground.
I wouldn't be tempted, I would go back to the Caviar. I'd make sure 10.6.2, your software, and any additional hardware you have plays nice with that and the disk doesn't become "corrupt" over time. I don't know how much time to give it, but when you're satisfied, clone that system over to a FW Drive or something so at least you know you have a good system tucked away somewhere.
And this didn't happen with 10.6.1, right? How long have you been using the SSDs?
It gets me that this is something that appears over time. That I believe you're saying each time you manage to get DU to report no errors, sometime afterward it does again. Well, as I recently had pointed out to me again, flawed drives do crack under load. But two of them? And for something you really don't want to hear, many of us out here using SSDs have just not seen this, so it's hard to think the fault lies with 10.6.2. Granted I have Vertex and 1st gen 80gb Intels, could this be something only affecting the second gen Intels? I haven't heard that reported either, but who knows, yours may be the first of more to come. I know there are people here using the 2nd gen, maybe they'll write in (MsB, where are you?). From what I've read, the Intels have had more issues than other SSDs, but not of this nature as far as I know.
So again, for my own clarity of mind only, you can get the problem fixed, no errors reported, and a short time later with use they just come back again, and you're saying that this has only come about since 10.6.2. It's bizarre.
Well that leaves one fairly obvious thing to do and one thing you really should do.
On the last, get DiskWarrior, it really is an outstanding program.
On the first... Go back to 10.6.1.
And on that also, tell us how long you've used 10.6.1 with the SSDs. Also, did you use the combo or Software Update to get to 10.6.2? Doing that, using SU, really has been a source of problems in the past.
Also, while every Mac of the same model should be the same, frequently that doesn't seem to be the case. 1 person is affected by something, 10 people aren't. Can you yourself point to anything that may be making your Mac behave differently than the rest. Any special circumstances like heat or electricity?
When I switched to SL it was a disaster for me until I did a clean install and rebuilt my system again. Many people were able to migrate things over successfully but that simply never worked for me. Not one thing could I migrate without it taking a toll on the performance of my Mac. I could never figure that out.
I'm trying to think of things that might make SSDs more prone to damage than standard disks. But then again, it's not damage is it. It's corruption. Anyone here know exactly what that means? There is data and file corruption, but disk corruption? Are they the same?
Well, lastly, and again, I can only think that by going back to an earlier OS can you be sure it's 10.6.2. If it turns out to be 10.6.2 only, then I would be glad to admit that's it, and be wary for my own benefit. In my case though I use DU, Diskwarrior and others utilities like Superduper a lot. I just haven't seen any indication of something similar happening. Please look into getting DiskWarrior. It's pricey but it's saved me on more than a few occasions and really I think it is worth it even if it is the only Utility program you can afford.
I'd like to see your SSDs working with 10.6.2, but if they can't and they work well with an earlier OS, personally I'd drop 10.6.2 and stick with the SSDs. On the other hand if you have only a certain amount of time to get a refund on the SSD's, I'd exchange them for new ones or get a refund and buy a different make of SSD.
It's a difficult issue and you must be extremely frustrated by now. But hang in there and I bet you'll get this sorted out.

  • 500GB HDD Upgrade + disk errors

    Hi,
I have a MBP 17" 2.16Ghz Intel Core Duo and just installed an upgraded hard drive. This is the second upgrade that I have performed. (Went from 100GB 7200rpm to 200GB 7200rpm, and now to a 500GB 5400rpm Samsung). The first time it worked like a charm. This time, I am getting some hard drive errors that Disk Utility can't fix. Here is the messages I get:
    Verifying volume “SysDrive”
    Performing live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 92349424 instead of 92349296)
The volume SysDrive needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
    Followed by:
Disk Utility stopped verifying "SysDrive" because the following error was encountered:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I installed OSX from scratch on a freshly formatted drive and recovered a Time Machine backup to get my settings back. After I started noticing problems, such as Mail and Safari crashing, and a terrible time installing Vista under Parallels (lots of blue screen of death), I looked at Disk Utility and found the problems.
I swapped out the drive again for the 200GB. If I plug in the 500GB as an external USB and run the Disk Utility verify, it comes back clean. My 200GB comes back clean too, so the second time around I used Carbon Copy to clone the contents of the 200GB drive on to the new 500GB drive, then re-installed the new drive in the MBP.
I am able to boot up, and for the most part it seems to work, but Safari quit on me a while ago and I am getting the error above in Disk Utility. I am not even going to start messing with Parallels until I figure something out.
Sorry for the long post, but I am trying to give as much detail as possible.
Does the error above make any sense to anyone? Is there a utility that will be able to fix it?
    Thanks
    D

Given that you are just starting out with the new drive, the question will be: do you want to spend time on trying to recover the volume, or are you willing to start afresh?
If you haven't put much new stuff on it (and hence, the backup is still the most recent version of your info), it may be quicker to just reformat the drive completely and reinstall. If after the format you keep getting errors, a warranty replacement would be in order.
On the other hand, like Kenneth states, repairing the current volume will require stronger stuff than Disk Utility.

  • Disk Errors Reappear Within Day After Repair-Hard Drive Dead?

Over the last few weeks, I have been experiencing crashes on my Macbook Pro. The crash would appear as such:
I'll be using Chrome and all of a sudden pages won't load. The mouse continues to work, but if I navigate to the desktop, folder won't open. Then, if I try to quit programs, the dock either becomes unresponsive or programs will only quit if "forced quit." Then the beachball of death appears. The beachball of death will continue for a very long time—perhasp indefinitely, so I decide to manually power down the computer.
I have tried to verify the hard drive in Disk Utility, and a few times I have gotten this error:
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 46122698 instead of 42839276)
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the Mac OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
So I restart from the system (command-R) and repair the disk. But now within a day or two I get the same error.
Does my hard drive need to be replaced? Am I on borrowed time? My computer is under warranty. Do you think Apple will replace the hard drive?
    Thank you for your help!
P.S. I have my data backed up to Time Machine, so I am not in imminent danger of losing priceless files.

I believe so. Hope you have a backup.

If under warranty & determined to be faulty, your hard drive will be replaced. Make an appointment at an Apple store.

  • HP Pavilion g4 2131tx, Hard Disk Error after Blue Screen of Death

Hello! I do not know what section shoud i post this problem, I apologize for it.
So my laptop is freezing for a days after BSOD. When I leave my laptop overnight for downloading torrents, I always receive the message "Windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown." when i woke up.
I already disabled all non-microsoft services, start up items and yet the desktop is still freezing right after the welcome screen but the welcome screen does not load too long.
The desktop freeze for more than a minute then it will go back to normal again until my laptop went to BSOD
and received this error from UEFI "Hard Disk Error." after restarting.
I ran the Hardware Diagnostic Test and I got the result:
    Failure ID: RW042K-6MT6RP-MFPX1F-61BK03
    Product ID: 65H69PA#UUF
I tried cleaning up registry and defragmenting disk and still no luck.
    * My laptop is HP Pavilion g4 2131tx and still under warranty until June 2014.
    * I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Service Pack 1
    * My RAM is 4gb with a processor of Intel Core i7
    * My AV is microsoft security essentials

This is a nice compromise with size, speed and expense. You could install an SSD for maximum speed. Post back if you need help with software or anything else.

  • Hard disk error when syncing

    Hi Guys.
The other day the ipod had a hit on the floor, and since then im having problems with the hard drive when copying songs.
Im able to transfer some music to the ipod but when it reaches a bad sector, starts having issues copying the song.
When Itunes tries to sync, it takes a long time to copy a single song (ipod change status from Syncing/Connected) and it ends with a message error stating disk could not be read/written
I tried running the Diagnostic Mode. and the HD SMART Data shows
Realloc 9624 ( this number is growing after each sync)
    Pending 216
Should I reformat the disk using HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool? Is this a valid way to fix the bad sectors?
What options do you suggest to fix the HD?
    Thanks!

  • HP dv4-1225dx "Hard Disk Error" 3F1 on startup with eSATA HDD attached

The whole internet is void of information on this specific error code, so here it is, lo and behold, the ONLY English-language Google result for this error message:
    Hard Disk Error
Please run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.
    Error code:
    Hard Disk 1 (3F1)
    F2 System Diagnostics
For more information, please visit: (illegible due to colored text)
Specifically, the "Hard Disk 1 (3F1)" part, that's nowhere to be found online. Tons of pages about 3F0, apparently the primary hard disk. No, this is an error regarding the secondary hard disk, attached via eSATA.
Problem is, there's NOTHING wrong with the attached drive, other than this error on startup. No SMART failures. Comes up and works fine in Windows. Scanned 100% OK. It'd be nice if there were a way to bypass this error automatically, but I always have to hit F2, then Esc to abort its forced diagnostic routine.
It's a WD My Book Studio, 750gb, attached via eSATA. Doesn't happen if I leave it unplugged during startup... but SATA is a connection that likes to be present on startup. The system, as in the title, is a dv4-1225dx laptop, running Windows Home Server (Server 2003), but previously running Windows 7 Home Premium. Vista is evil.
It's also my home server, as of about yesterday (when I set it up and started getting this message). The system seems to crash pretty routinely over the past few days and every time it reboots, it hangs at that stupid "Hard Disk Error" message. Not a pretty sight when I'm away from home and want to access something, like my email. Is there a way around this message hanging the system?
edit: Not to mention the world's most buggy fan-control algorithm, worst heatpipe design on the planet, no AHCI mode control, and terrible system management (battery went dead on you at 40%? tough... remove battery to continue using your computer). LOOOOTS of bugs in this terrible BIOS.

Thanks for the link, it helps clarify that there's a difference between "3F1" and "301" - hard disk error and SMART error. In other words, it's reporting a generic "Error", not even that the drive may be/is failing.
In this case, the drive isn't failing, at all. It's a BIOS bug.
I put the drive on an ExpressCard eSATA controller, and it works fine. Unfortunately, since I'm the only one using this sort of configuration and getting this error, I imagine there won't be any work done to fix the bug

  • Hard disk error on Toshiba Satellite A505 56980

    Hello,
Windows keeps bringing up a notification that the hard disk on my Toshiba laptop(A505 56980) has errors. It recommends for me to get hardware technical support to determine if the disk can be repaired or needs to be replaced.
My disk name is TOSHIBA MK5055GSX and I have only one volume C:\ drive.
I am running my antivirus scan just to make sure I don't have any active viruses or trojans damaging my hard drive. My computer freezes for a few seconds on and off. Not sure if this is related to the hard disk error.
I have backed up all my info and also created system recovery disk. I also have the recovery disks from when I got the laptop.
My question is how do I go about diagnosing the hard disk error and geting it fixed? What is the warranty for hard disks? I bought this laptop beginning of last year.
I appreciate any help I can get to resolve this problem.
    Thanks
    - Priya K

    Priya
Perhaps your model name/number is Satellite A505-S6980?
    Satellite A505-S6980 Specifications
    Satellite A505-S6980 Downloads
Restart your system, when you see the Toshiba logo start pressing the F8 key repeatedly until you enter the Advanced Boot Options Menu, choose 'Repair Your Computer'.
This should take you to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRe)
Select 'Command Prompt', and type in this command, hit the 'Enter' key, and restart your computer:
       chkdsk c: /r
This will check your hard drive, try to recover any corrupted files/data it can, and repair any problems it can. It takes a while to run anyway. But, if there are problems with your hard drive, it could take many hours. Just keep checking back, it will give a report as it goes, and when it's finished.
Let us know the results. Good luck.
    Mike
