Hard disk failure after just six days of purchase

I purchased a dv6-3093ca from Costco just six days ago, and the laptop completely froze up on me. I had to force shut down by holding down the power key. Afterwards the laptop was never able to restart Windows again (freezes at the welcome screen, and the system repair does nothing). I did a system diagnostics test and it passed every test except hard disk, which it failed.
Does anyone know how I can fish my files out of this? I didn't even have time to backup yet, because I figured a computer should at least survive for a couple of weeks before needing a backup...
This is completely unacceptable, because not only is the laptop top tier in terms of specs, it's actually one of the most expensive Pavilions as well. A brand new $1k computer broke down in just six days? I was merely running Firefox + MS Word + MSN at the time. Is there any fix for this (in case something like chkdsk works)? If not I guess I'll have to return it...

Come to think of it I'm not that surprised this happened now. I own three HP laptops (relatives bought the other two). One laptop basically could not be used for a long time with Vista, kept freezing for no reason, found it later it was another hardware problem. The more recent one's hard drive broke in just six days due to overheating, thanks to some idiot's design of cramming an i7 + 6GB RAM into a poorly designed system. The moronic "tech support"'s answer was "we will provide an exchange for you, after we send you a cardboard box, you send us the laptop, we fool around with it, then give you another hard drive when we feel like it, and by "when we feel like it", we mean either 2 weeks or 2 months". Yes it takes a lot of tech knowledge to come up with that kind of solution, and it took him an entire half an hour to type that into the computer as well. Waiting two weeks for an exchange that might break again? Lol like any person with a normal mind would do that. Returned it for a full refund right now and never touching another crappy HP product again. You fail at creating laptops HP, and what's even worse is that you fail at customer service as well.

    I recently had a hard disk failure and lost all of the data on my hard drive. I replaced the hard drive and reinstalled all of the software including iTunes. I am running Windows XP Home. The first time I plugged my iPod Nano into my computer after the hard drive replacement it synced to iTunes and since iTunes had no music files it deleted all of the music files on my Nano. How do I get them back and why on earth would iTunes do such a stupid thing??? My Nano contained many songs that I bought from iTunes and I want to get them back. I have found some third party software that will undelete the deleted files but it costs $69. I don't feel that I should have to pay to correct a defective feature in iTunes. Does Apple have an undelete utility? Can I redownload the songs that I purchased from iTunes?

    When you connected did you get a message that your iPod was linked to another library, and then press Erase and Sync? When an iPod is set to update automatically and you connect to a computer with an empty iTunes and accept the message above it will erase the originals completely (as you have discovered). Also as you've seen, none of the recovery programs are particularly cheap so you have to decide if in your particular circumstances it's worth it to get your songs back. It may be if you have a lot of purchased tracks which you will have to pay to download again. If they came primarily from your CDs then it's most likely not as you can re-rip them.

    If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:

    You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so.   • Trying to salvage iCal data after hard disk failure!

    Hi all,
    I had a major hard disk failure recently, and also discopvered that my regular backups weren't including my iCal data! Eek! All that info I use for tax records gone!
    Anyway, the wonderful DiskWarrior managed to salvage a drive that was not visible to the naked eye and it recovered various pieces of information. Many of these pieces seem to be re-packaged, or should I say 'Un-packaged'. I have a heap of folders of files that are probably supposed to be within another file structure to be useful to iCal.
    I have a few folders with very long names (such as EBD6EF28-1595-49DD-8AEA-8525C9F2CB55.calendar) these have the corestorage.ics
    Info.plist
    Index files in them, so appear to be the /App support/iCal folders, with a file extension added?!
    Also I have folders called the same as the .calendar folders above (but no extension) and these are filled with events like this:
    FEAD3FA1-FC1B-4D5B-8C3B-2AB72EA87DF7%2F-.icalevent
    FDDD239C-6B90-11DA-B375-00039383DFDE%2F-.icalevent
    In textEdit I can see that these are all my events... so near and yet so far. If all else fails I will store these for records.
    I can get Calendars to appear but iCal 2.0.5 won't open or imprt the event files...
    Can anyone suggest how I might restore said structure so that iCal can import them?

    Well, the structure of an ics file is easy to get (drag an event to desktop and open it with a text editor) and is well-described on the web, but I don't know about the structure of your icalevents, other than what we can see in the plist editor. After trimming out the time zone info, I get this for an ics file:

  • Satellite A215-S7414 Hard Disk Failure

    Hi. I purchased my laptop 16 months ago and this is the third time I have had hard Disk Failure. The first two times were in the first year and I received a new harddrive after sending it in to Depot for repair. Here we are the Third time and now Im outta warranty and apparently outta luck. Here are my many questions, first of all I didnt have the opportunity to back anything up, so if I were to replace the Hdd on my own, does that mean I would also have to purchase a new Vista package? Also, I have a Western Digital External harddrive that Im not using.....would that be of any assistance to me in trying to recover anything from the laptop?
    Everyone tells me it is cheaper to just get a new one, but that isnt practical and I dont want to just trash a laptop that is only 16 months old.

    I'll try to answer the questions you've asked.  First, you don't need to buy a new Vista package.  You should call Toshiba customer service at (800) 457-7777 and order a set of recovery disks for your notebook.  They will want the serial number and a credit card to cover the shipping and handling ($19.95 standard, $24.95 overnight).  The recovery disks will restore the system to 'as-shipped' condition with all of the appropriate drivers and utilties.  You can purchase a replacement drive reasonably from any number of sources.  Replacing the hard drive is straightforward.  You would remove the cover from the bottom, slide the drive out and transfer the hard drive 'caddy' to the new drive.  Slip it in, boot from the recovery disks and away you go.  You could install the old drive in an external USB housing and see if you can recover anything from it.  I can't think of a role for your current external drive other than as additional storage.

    Things I did before having this error:
    I reformatted my computer to erase an error from my program (specifically: solidworks) since it has conflicts regarding on 2 versions i installed and 1 of which has lost some of its files and i dont know how it got lost and so i resorted to reformatting.
    I did the normal formatting process, like format my hard disk and i followed the process neatly. I got a success on my formatting, then i installed my microsoft office and other important stuff needed for my work. A couple of hours passed it seems to give me an error on HARD DISK FAILURE. Which i thought was just an error maybe on my formatting so what i did was press the ASK ME AGAIN LATER button since i had already backed up my files. So i reformatted it once again hoping the error would leave but i notice the moment i booted the windows 7 32 bit installer i seem to have this error on my boot screen (BELOW IMAGE). And then after a couple of minutes the lagging would come but i still managed to put this THREAD up here and hoping someone would give me a solution on what to do or suggestions on buying something. Please feel free to SUGGEST anything like buying a new hard disk or something. I'll be waiting on your reply 24/7. Thanks

    After my first format i installed AVG on my desktop just to stop small viruses that might affect my computer. I scanned it. and then afterwards i tried their new added feature which was PC TUNE UP, REGISTRY CLEANER and i used their program since they were the ones who detected that there are errors in my registry and other stuff (I still didn't have the HARD DISK ERROR at this time) and so i successfully downloaded the software and use it. and so i uninstalled the program since it was only a trial and can only be used 1 time. After sometime i seem to receive the message. And so my story goes on.(part where i reformatted my computer again)

    Derek, welcome to the forum.
    The hard drive has S.M.A.R.T. technology.  This tests your hard drive for possible failure.  In your case, it appears that your drive is ready to fail.  I suggest buying a new drive.

  • Wrong support on hard disk failure?

    My iMac had been getting progressively slower (applications would lock up with the spinning wheel for minutes at a time before letting me do anything).
    After one such lockup, I hard booted and the iMac didn't come back - just stuck at a grey screen with the spinning wheel.
    I rang Apple Support and on a long support call was taken through various checks before the conclusion of hard disk problem was diagnosed.  We tried to repair using the disk utility, but that was unsuccessful and given that I had a time machine backup, the advice was to reformat, reload Snow Leopard, re-download and upgrade to Lion and the use Time Machine to restore.
    All fine (and I am back up and running now) - but one element of the support advice didn't ring true to me and I ignored it!  So I'm asking for opinions on whether I was right to do so.
    I was told to use a Time Machine backup from before the slow behaviour started, as by restoring I could restore the disk problem in the files loaded back from the Time Machine backup.  This made no sense to me.  I had a hard disk failure - sure - and Disk Utility confirmed this.  By reformatting the hard disk, I've eliminated the hard disk issue (albeit that having failed once I guess I may get other bad sectors/failures in the future).  The files on Time Machine - in whatever state they are in, are just files.  By copying them back onto the disk, I can't damage the disk - I may just end up with damaged files.  If some of those files were operating system files, then I could end up with problems - but as the operating system was cleanly installed - not from Time Machine - then even this shouldn't be an issue.
    Seems to me the only issue I may have is with my own files - restored from TM - if they happened to be on a bad part of the disk and were damaged.
    Do you agree?  Or am I missing something about being able to create bad areas on a disk by copying bad files?

    To add to this - given that I've had no replies, given with perhaps others have faced similar issues without a solutions.
    My problem has recurred - the disk failure repeated - again unable to repair the harddisk and having to reformat, reinstall Lion and restore from Time Machine again.
    Two points here:
    I continue to believe the support information I was given was wrong - and will be talking support again to test this.  My harddisk post reformat was fine (disk utility showed no problems), and post restoring from Time Machine the harddisk again was fine.  But after a week, the disk has failed again.  I don't believe that restoring files can cause this, but think I must have a bad harddisk and that the real answer is to replace the harddisk
    I was told (on the original support call) not to use the latest backup - as that might bring back corrupted files that could recreate the disk problem.  I ignored this as above as I felt the support was wrong - it making no sense to me that on a good disk, copying bad files could corrupt the disk.  However, when you use the migration assistant you do not get an opportunity to choose the date you are copying data from - so there seems to be no way of doing what the support team told me to do - by default I get the very latest backup.  Am I missing something?

    Since 6 months I have HP Pavilion dv6 3180ec, running Win7 64-bit. 
    Recently the notebook restarted itself several times during last couple of days with a hard disk failure message (blue screen); after restart, a Hard disk diagnosis was requested however never properly started... So I run the test from BIOS and got following error message:
    Hard disk test failed
    Failure ID: 9CW77A-5KM5T8-XD002K-60S903
    (interesting is that the SMART test passed successfully)
    Does anybody knows, how severe the failure is? Is the change of HDD necessary? I would like to avoid the situation to send it to HP customer service for warranty check and have no notebook for a month, as the guys will not experience the same problem (actually even I am now writing the post on that notebook - and without any restart...)

    Hi,
    If not a SMART error, this will either be a failure of the short or long Disk Self Test and really would indicate the drive should be replaced.  There is no need to have to send the notebook in, as if you contact HP to arrange for a new HDD to be supplied to you under warranty, the drive will be sent out to you - you normally have to pay a deposit which is refunded when you return the defective HDD.

  • Hard disk failure and warranty

    I bought my Macbook in September '07, without the extended Apple Care warranty. My hard disk recently failed--after the computer shut itself off while attempting to wake from sleep while the DVD player was open and paused. (This particular sequence had happened before, without the subsequent hard disk failure.) Now I boot from my firewire backup, and disk utility and even the OSX install disk cannot find the internal drive. Instead I just hear this sound like a limping bird from that corner of the case.
    At any rate, since my computer as a whole is outside the 1-yr warranty by now, I wanted to ask--can individual parts carry their own warranty, as well? Because this Macbook is still only lightly used, and it seems silly to suffer such a fate so soon.

    Early hard drive failures tend to be random in nature. Of course older hard drives tend to suffer exponentially higher failure rates as the parts wear. I've had little used hard drives crash after less than 6 months. It just happens.
    Unfortunately for you, the warranty isn't based on amount of use, but time from the date of purchase. Still - the cost of aftermarket replacement drives is so low that you could probably just purchase a new one at an almost nominal cost. You could by an equivalent replacement for about $60. You've already got the backup, so cloning it back to the new drive should be something you already know how to do.

  • Repeated Hard Disk failures

    I purchased a Lenovo G450-2949 about 2 years ago with Windows & Home premium.  Shortly after the warranty expired it experienced a hard disk failure.  I replaced the disk and reloaded Windows 7.  The disk failed again a few months later.  I replaced it again and loaded Windows 8 on the machine only to experience another failure a few months later.  The machine now runs but does not shut down properly causing a boot failure requiring depression of the "f1" key to restart Windows.  I get regular messages that disk failure is imminent and suggestion that I backup and replace the disk...for the third time!  Can anyone help with this issue??

    It sounds like the cable to the drive might be going bad.
    Have you checked in on replacing it?
    Also, after checking the specs on this system, for the money that you have laid out on HDD's
    You could have possibly bought you a new 64-Bit 8GB system. (Just a thought).
    However, back to the issue.
    Check the cable going to the drive, as I seriously doubt that the drives are all going bad.
    This sounds like either:
    Cable (or) Motherboard issue.
    Also.
    The drive that you put in the system, does the BIOS recognize its full capacity?
    If not, then that could also be the cause of the issues, as if the BIOS does not recognize the full capacity, then that will certainly cause Windows to act up.

  • IMac 27'' mid 2011 hard disk failure with FileVault 2

    Recently I had had some troubles with my iMac and everything is pointing out to the hard disk.
    2 weeks ago I rebooted the iMac and i lost all my data because of a hard disk failure. The disk just got corrupted according to what i could see. From there, i had a lot of troubles trying to reinstall the last version of OS X (10.8). I indeed formated the disk and i even securely erased it. When I tried to reinstall it from external HD or from a USB key i usually (not always) got error in the final steps of installation. However, if i use the Recovery partition to install from Internet i ain't got no errors.
    With OS X already installed, i also tried to encrypt the disk using FileVault 2 and i got an error again. This time, when 2 hours left to finish the encryption. It seems to be a common error which a lot of people is suffering, but i still don't know if my case is a hardware problem or, on the other hand, a software error.
    I carried the iMac to the tech support in my city and they discarded a hardware problem. They gave format to the disk and installed OS X with no problem, so they told me to check if the iMac keep spitting some error or just it has any anomalous behavior. Actually it seems to run fine, no errors yet excepting FileVault 2, which is generating the same error.
    I have always used FileVault without any kind problem (in all my macs, including this one), so could it be a Mountain Lion issue?

    Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
    If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)

    Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?

  • G72 Hard Disk Failure and Replacement

    I have had a HP g72 laptop for just over two years. Within the first year, right before the warranty expired, I had a charging issue that was resolved under warranty. Last year, I began to get warnings on startup that I had an imminent hard disk failure. I backed up most of the important things on my computer and kept using. Finally, it seems that my hard drive has failed for good. I have tried to restart my computer about 10 times and everytime I get the same message: insert boot disk and press any key. I am contemplating replacing the hard drive instead of the whole computer, but I am not sure what I need to do. Also, if this is such a problem, why hasn't HP done anything to fix it. It has been so frustrating with my HP laptops that I am considering going to another company. HELP!

    Hard drives fail. That is why backup is so critical. HP does not even make hard drives so I am not sure what they could do to fix the general issue that hard drives are about the most fragile piece of technology that most people encounter.

  • A10 Hard disk failure and replacement - How do I use Recovery Disks?

    I have a Satellite Pro A10 which has suffered a hard disk failure. I have replaced the hard disk drive (with a non-toshiba drive) but cannot load the operating sysytem etc from the recovery disks supplied with the computer when new. When starting the computer up with recovery disk No 1 in the CD drive I get the message "Invalid system disk, Replace the disk and then press any key" Any suggestions as to the remedy would be most welcome.

    Please check at first if your new HDD is properly recognized by BIOS. It yes you should prepare the HDD for installation. I recommend you to use some tool and make a partition on new HDD. If you want you can format it before you start the installations procedure.
    I am pretty sure that after that the recovery installation can be done successfully.

  • Hard disk failure imminent

    I have a Pavilion 1400-Z desktop. It was purchased last November.  I have only had it for 2 months.  Now everytime it reboots I get an error message about an imminent hard disk failure.  It says in a message after I login that the hard disks reporting failure are volumes C:\,D:\
    These are both partitions set up in single 500gb drive that were set up as part of the factory install.
    Is there anything that can be done other than replacing this hard drive?
    Obviously it is still under warranty.  If replacement is the only solution, how do I go about getting the process started.  I've barely gotten to use my new computer and it is already failing.

  • MacBook Pro Hard Disk Crashed after Frozen Screen

    Very unpleasant experience with my first MacBook.  My MacBook Pro Book 13'' (late 2010 model) screen froze on start up.  Realised that the battery was low and plugged the power adapter in, and let the frozen screen continue hoping for it to start in a while, only to realise that the entire laptop heated up significantly.  I switchd the laptop off and let it simply recharge.
    No luck on restarting after laptop was fully charged despite several attempts and following all instructions on Apple website, including SMC reset.  I took the laptop down to the store and the Genius Bar team informed me that the hard disk had corrupted and they could not retrieve any data.
    Wondering if this is a common problem, as I have never had a hard disk failure before and specially surprising as it is relatively new laptop (<1 year) old ? Seems like a technical fault with the laptop prima facie.  Some data was not backed up recently, and now I need to look for a recovery specialist, with costs to bear despite Apple Care.
    Any suggestions on recovery specialists in London who do not charge a fortune ?
