Hard Disk Full Error With Plenty of Available Space

Forgive me if this has been posted/asked here before I did a google search as well as tried to search the forum though maybe I had my phrasing incorrect.
When I try to open my itunes I am getting an error saying that my hard disk is full and that I must make room available by deleting files.
I'm running windows 7, my entire itunes library is kept on a Lacie 500G external hard drive with about 350G of space available for additional files so I'm not sure what the origins of this error are an, most importantly how to get it fixed.
I tried a basic reinstall with no luck and am totally clueless here.
Help.

You need to have a read of the manual here -- you can specify affinities in Xsan and it's possible the default configuration is to fill specific folders first.
It's not a good idea to attempt to manage Xsan without some training or knowledge of the product... this is how "bad things" happen. It's a complicated product which has been made to look simple -- but if you don't know how it works and how to manage it, it's best to not try and work the levers.
I'd suggest reading the manuals, perhaps taking an Apple class, or at the very minimum getting the Xsan Quick-Reference guide from Peachpit press.

  • Hard disk full error!

My Macbook Pro mid 2012 (non-retina display) keeps showing me that the startup disk is full. I have only one partition for the whole system and it is 750 GB in size. I am sure that all my files account only for 200 GB max. Suspecting a hard disk error I ran the disk utility's verify disk and repair disk but it showed no errors. Within the console windowserver and networkd were repeating on and on!!
I then used another productivity software named OmniDiskSweeper to check out my disk. I was surprised to find that within my usr/bin/ directory i found many clones of the usr directory. i.e. main root/usr/bin/usr/bin/usr/bin/usr/bin...........(many directories in this fashion and finally all of my hard disk excepting 25 MB is full). The size of a single bin directory was 40 GB and there were about 12 usr/bin within it's previous usr/bin. I tried deleting the duplicate directories created in OmniDiskSweeper itself.
But I keep getting a console error message stating that the UI of windowserver was force disabled by OmniDiskSweeper and immediately the next second I get that OmniDiskSweeper has forcefully re-enabled UI of windowserver and my whole hard disk is still full!! I also tried booting it up in safe mode but still it has been on the grey apple logo screen for 6 hours until now (and still going on) with no visible progress.
What could be the problem here? Any help?
    Thanks in advance!!

means the drive is failing and should be replaced....

  • "Backup Disk Full" error with over 100 GBs free on disk!

The subject line pretty much says it all. Any idea why TimeMachine thinks my disk is full? I have 3 drives: internal has 60 GB available, LaCie 500 GB has 145 GB available and 1 TB drive has 101 GB available. The TB drive is set for the TM backups. What gives? Any ideas?

This is actually most of a normal, though lengthy, log. The end seems cut off, though.
Hmmm. The above prompted me to go back and check the log again, at which point I realized that I'd forgotten to take off the "backup" filter I'd used to find the TM part. Sorry!! I do things in too much a hurry sometimes (often, actually). Here's the log again, starting from the exact same spot but ending 10 minutes later. This time it's EVERYTHING - NO filter set:

Some of these things sound REALLY weird to me - for example, the references to vaccuuming. Too strange! <LOL>
If your Mac is running at midnight, the log should "turn over" -- the current one (system.log) renamed to system.log.0.bz2, the previous to system.log.1.bz2, etc., and a new system.log started. So what you're seeing started 12 minutes after midnight.
Yes, I figured that out. What I find strange about that process, though, is that Console appears to number the logs backwards. In other words, the one after the most recent one is #0 and the oldest one in the list is #7. Seems odd to me but there's obviously some kind of rationale at work there. :>)
I have no idea what those 30,000 files were, but I'd strongly suspect the permission repair you did earlier. I also have no idea what the initial 480 gb it thought it needed was about.
That would make perfect sense if it wasn't for the fact that the permission repair came about 8 hours AFTER the quoted part of the log! Another odd thing, which I think I've mentioned already, is that the error message appeared some time after I got up, had breakfast, put the dogs out, etc. so it was after 9 am or so. I cannot find a repeat of the copied part anywhere else during that morning or during that day, as far as that goes, so the error report obviously referred to the 12-2am activity but it sure took its time appearing.
IF this backup completed normally, then subsequent ones should be very quick and small, unless there were many large files changed.
Also, this whole process seems very slow. How much memory do you have, and was anything else of note running at this time? Do you have other performance issues?
Generally it IS very fast, from what I can tell. Most of the time I don't even notice it happening, even thought the drive is pretty noisy. I have 2 GB of Ram and most likely had Photoshop, InDesign, GoLive, FileMakerPro all running, plus miscellaneous "small" apps like bookkeeping stuff. If I open up any MS Office stuff I try to quit them as soon as I've finished using them, as they do seem to cause problems (why am I not surprised?!).
And check the TM menu bar icon and/or System Preferences > Time Machine to be sure you have normal completions.
Most of the time I do; at least, I do whenever I think to take a look. It seems to have been chugging along quite happily ever since this "event", so maybe all is well now? I'm going to go in and clear off the old stuff, moving it to the LaCie drive, now that the Permissions should (hopefully) let me. That should help, I would think. I've toyed with the idea of burning the really old stuff to DVDs but I'd just lose them in the stacks and stacks and stacks (ad infinitum it seems at times) of CDs/DVDs I have here after putting together magazines/websites for 10 to 15 years. I never throw anything out if I can help it, although I did regretfully part with the old floppies once I no longer had a floppy drive. It's amazing how often I have to search out some really old photo or something that someone wants to re-use when a dog dies or something.
Thanks again (I really can't say that often enough) for your help with this!

  • Disk full error with 960GB free!

Xsan virgin here so be gentle...
Doing some work for a friend (always a bad move) - I set up his Xserve/Xraid/Xsan for him. Originally 4 x 250GB drives in one RAID array and added to a SAN. He ran out of space so he duly got another three 500GB drives and I created a second array to add to the SAN, all so far so good. I have the LUN's created and every thing is added together in a seemingly harmonious fashion. In my storage pools I have the one that is nearly full and the second one is registering around 30GB of data having been written. When the SAN share is brought up on the client machines it shows the SAN perfectly well and that there is around 960GB free. Everything looks fine until they start to copy over data to the SAN, it then brings up the following message...
The operation cannot be completed because the disk is full
    with 960GB free.....?!
I have screenshots of this is anyone is interested but I am at a loss as to how to remedy the problem. If any Xsan experts out there would please take pity I would be very grateful.
    Gerry McCoy

You need to have a read of the manual here -- you can specify affinities in Xsan and it's possible the default configuration is to fill specific folders first.
It's not a good idea to attempt to manage Xsan without some training or knowledge of the product... this is how "bad things" happen. It's a complicated product which has been made to look simple -- but if you don't know how it works and how to manage it, it's best to not try and work the levers.
I'd suggest reading the manuals, perhaps taking an Apple class, or at the very minimum getting the Xsan Quick-Reference guide from Peachpit press.

I've cleared almost 30 gig off of my hard drive in the past 2 weeks, and it will temporarily show that in the Get Info box.  But hours later, I am still getting a disk full error and all of the memory has disappeared.  I have cleared my backup logs from Time Machine, checked the mail folder, cleaned out tons of photos and videos and it still keeps filling back up.

    I'm running and iMac 20-inch  early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    Step 1
Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

  • Media Encoder - "Disk Full" error

I am using CS4 and tried to render my 1st video of about 2 hours to MS AVI format. I get an error after about 20 minutes that says:

    Disk Full.
The Output file disk has about has about 650gb of available space available. Can anyone help me with what the problem could be? Thanks.

First thanks to everyone who tried to help. I believe I found the problem. It had nothing to do with Premiere Pro setup. The 1TB external hard drive that I was using for my scratch drive was set up as a FAT32. This meant that any files I tried to create that would be greater than about 4GB would error out. This is why I was getting the "disk full" error message even though my disk still had over of 600gb available space. I converted the hard drive to NTFS and have no more errors. Hopefully my discovery will help the next person who may run into this problem.

  • Startup Disk Full Error - Please help

    Dear ALL,
I have started to notice recently that when I run Photoshop CS on my Mac OSX Tiger, I am getting the Startup Disk Full error message.
I have no clue as to how to correctly fix this issue. I looked at my HD and I seem to have 32GB available, which I would have thought would have been ample space. I have started to remove unwanted files and backup to CD large image files. So this should free up some more space. The question is will this be enough to get rid of this issue and is it associated with the amount of HD space on my drive? or would I need to run some script etc? or download/buy some other product to fix this?
    Your help is greatly appreciated.

OK I tried Macaroni...and when I tried to work with a TIFF file I get the same Startup Disk is FULL message. The I get an adobe message saying Scratch Disk is FULL.
Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.

  • Adobe Photoshop Scratch Disk Full/Startup Disk Full error - PLEASE HELP

    Dear ALL,
I have started to notice recently that when I run Photoshop CS on my Mac OSX Tiger, I am getting the Startup Disk Full error message. Never happended before.
Since my initial post I downloaded Macaroni (utility) and have run the daily/weekly/monthly backups, checked the /private/var/vm and /private/var/log and /Volumes. Nothing unusual there...
When I started getting this error I had 32GB left on a looked at my HD and I seem to have 32GB available on a 152GB drive. Now after deleting I have 76GB capacity left.
But when I tried to open a Photoshop PSD or TIFF file and do a crop I still get tge Startup Disk is Full error followed by the Adobe Photoshop error Scratch Disk is Full.
I am thinking of running the Disk Utility from the Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and doing a Verify Disk and Verify Disk Permissions followed by Repair Disk Permissions. I will be logged into the machine whilst doing this. Is there any danger in this as I have read elsewhere that I need to do this from a bootable volume. If that is the case how do I create a bootable disk/cd? If not then what is the cure to my Disk Full as surely there is now nearly 50% FREE!!!!!
    Please help.
    Max

PS will always use the boot disk for scratch to some extent even with an alternate primary scratch disk.
Be sure to turn off Spotlight as it causes problems.
4GB of RAM would be nice, I understand small files don't work well if there is more than 4GB RAM but large files will. OS X uses free RAM as cache and RAM disk before using disk drives.
How much RAM is allocated to PS? More RAM would help.
A dedicated lean boot drive helps. Install just what is needed for your work, use a separate drive for data, and yet another RAID volume for scratch.
When in doubt, backup with SuperDuper, and do an erase and then restore. Always backup before repairing; and never, ever, use an old version of Tiger CD/DVD - like 10.4.2 on 10.4.7/.8. Use "fsck" instead, or your emergency boot drive.
Also, give Applejack a shot and delete the cache folders and swap files from time to time to keep a system humming. CS/CS2 and Tiger benefit nicely from more RAM.

  • Hopeless disk-full error of my 5800 XpressMusic

    Dear Nokia,
I'm using my 5800 XpressMusic for quite a long time a I like it for many things: long battery life, ergonomics, etc.
There is one terrible bug though that spoils the pleasure. I'm constantly getting "disk full" error.
I have read all forums/discussions/advises about the problem. I have cleaned up the browser cash and the cash of all other applications. The firm fact is that all the files (including hidden ones) in my C drive occupy about 20percent of its size but the disk is full.
Yes, I know that if do the hard reset, it will help. BUT I JUST DON"T WANT! Last time I did it, it took me hours because the new firmware would not want to install or something.
It is an obvious bug of the file system. Why, dear Nokia, are you making updates of the firmware with new graphical features and (sure everyone needs it) dynamic scrolling WITHOUT FIXING THIS BUG? Can you at least make an app that would recover the lost space?
Is it not a proper message for discussion forums? Probably! But there is no support anymore to contact. All "contact support"  links end up here. You are not trying to help your customers with their problems, you invite to discuss them. How nice!
Could you please give some response to the issue? So far i've only seen reports of desperate users trying to fix the problem.

Hello, w00dman. Welcome to the Nokia Support Discussions!
We are sorry to hear this. You may try the below fixes:
Close some applications and try again
In this case there are too many applications active at the same time. The problem can be fixed by closing some of the applications:
Long press the Menu key to see the list of active applications.
Select the applications which are not needed and close them.
If this doesn't help, switch off and restart the phone.
Delete or remove some data from C: Phone memory
The phone notifies you if the phone memory or memory card free space is getting low. There can be different error messages shown this situation, for example:
"Memory Full: Delete or remove some data from C: Phone memory"
"Disk Full : Automatic retrieval of mailbox for exchange disabled"
    Free your Phone memory
Transfer some data to the memory card with the File mgr application (select Menu > Applications > File mgr.). Select or mark files to be moved, select Options > Organise > Move to folder and then the destination folder.
In order to free memory, you could also remove or move the following items:
Messages from Inbox, Drafts and Sent folders in Messaging.
Define a shorter sync period in Mail settings to remove retrieved e-mails.
Clear the web browser cache to free some memory (select Options > Clear privacy data > Cache).
Saved images, videos, or sound files.
    Contact information.
    Calendar notes.
    Downloaded application packages.
If there are applications which are not needed any more, uninstall them (select Menu > Settings > Data mgr. > App.mgr. > Installed apps.).
Any other data that you no longer need.
Use the memory card in the Camera application (select Options > Settings > Memory in use to define the memory where the images are stored). Or copy images and video clips to your PC with Nokia Suite.
Let us know how it will go.

  • Scratch Disk Full error for PS7 installation in Windows 7

Can anyone from Adobe tech support tell me how to install my own copy of PS7 on my new Windows 7 computer without having the Scratch Disk Full error show up?  I am comfortable around my computer but am certainly not a tech wizard and it would be helpful if there was a set of specific steps I could take. I've read forums about partitioning but I don't want to make a wrong step and screw everything else up. Also, is this a problem with the more recent Photoshop CS versions?

Well, I've been able to install my PS-7 on my virtual drive in XP mode somehow (I got the 'disk full' pop-up, but then it seemed to install it anyway- I don't remember if it was the curse I leveled at it or what- and it still seems to run.  I can actually access images from the Windows 7 side C: drive after opening Photoshop and going to 'open/ C:/ My Photos (or whatever)', but images I open in Windows 7 have to be saved on my hard drive before I can access them in Photoshop in XP mode. I'm still not sure where the new images will be stored and if they will be able to be accessed from both XP and Windows 7 mode (my gut says "fat chance"), and I can't have my Windows 7 images open in Photoshop natively.
I have therefore decided to add to the (probably swelling) coffers of Adobe by buying a shiny, brand new, squeaky-clean, and (hopefully) fully functional copy of Photoshop Elements 10 to install on my Windows 7 side, so now I can avoid having some lame 'viewer' program open my images.  Ain't technology grand?

  • E52 Disk Full Error

I have been having a lot of problems recently with Disk Full Error coming up on my E52.
I went through getting rid of as much as possible and doing a factory reset to try and get rid of the problems.
I managed to free up about 20mb, and then by the end of the same day I end up getting the memory full error messages again, which is stopping me from using phone properly. Unable to run most applications or recieve text messages. very frustrating...
Does anyone have any advice for this or any other people experiencing problems? I have found little of relevance in forums/web searches.
    Thanks in advance.

disk full meaning drive C: so the phones disk is full.
i have been through deleting things. which gave some free space but this filled up quickly without me actually adding /downloading anything.
i have now done a full hard reset: ie(hold the following buttons * (star key), 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen)
I am using latest software version 051.018
so far now showing phone memory 25mb in use and 37mb free.
I will keep an eye on it and see if any further problems. disappointed to have to go to the extreeme lenghts of full hard reset to solve.
wasn't sure if "Mail for Exchange" may have anything to do with it, I had removed the account from my email, and I still kept finding log files?
