Hard disk full

When starting up the cumputer says the  hhard disk is full. I know it is not as I have just removed 100 GB of images and deleted them from the drive.

Hi Todd, one thing that is sure to raise debate on here is the subject of emptying the cache.  It be something to do just to make sure space isn't being used up.
Have you considered an external hard drive?  There are a number of good ones on the market, one I bought in September when I got this MBP is the Mercury Elite Pro 2 TB drive from OWC, http://www.macsales.com they are Mac specialists and have a strong rep on here.
An external drive can be partitioned for Time Machine backups and extra work space, then point your photo editing, I assume that is what you do from your name, to the external drive partition for its default work space.  That should help keep the internal startup drive cleaner.  You can even clone the internal to the external, or just install the Mac OS X you have on the external so you have another bootable drive should something go really wrong with the internal drive.
Right now that internal drive space seems a little suspect, keep an eye on it and see what it says.  You can always go to Applications, Utilities, Activity Monitor and see what the reported space on the drive really looks lke.

  • Rendered Standard previews, Hard disk full

    Hello,
I'm using Lightroom 4.0 on Mac OS 10.7.3 and used the "Render Standard-Sized Previews" option to generate previews overnight. I had about 30 gigabytes of free space and woke up to find my hard disk full.
Since restarting, discarding the *1:1* previews and purging the ACR cache, I have about 10 gigabytes free, but it seems like ~20GB or so is being consumed with previews.
My "Lightroom 4 catalog Previews.lrdata" package is only 3.53GB.
Is there somewhere I can look for additional rendered preview files to delete them?
    Thanks!

You may have a corrupted disk but you do not have a virus. Boot using your original system installation DVD and run Disk Utility. Repair the disk.

  • Hard disk full error!

My Macbook Pro mid 2012 (non-retina display) keeps showing me that the startup disk is full. I have only one partition for the whole system and it is 750 GB in size. I am sure that all my files account only for 200 GB max. Suspecting a hard disk error I ran the disk utility's verify disk and repair disk but it showed no errors. Within the console windowserver and networkd were repeating on and on!!
I then used another productivity software named OmniDiskSweeper to check out my disk. I was surprised to find that within my usr/bin/ directory i found many clones of the usr directory. i.e. main root/usr/bin/usr/bin/usr/bin/usr/bin...........(many directories in this fashion and finally all of my hard disk excepting 25 MB is full). The size of a single bin directory was 40 GB and there were about 12 usr/bin within it's previous usr/bin. I tried deleting the duplicate directories created in OmniDiskSweeper itself.
But I keep getting a console error message stating that the UI of windowserver was force disabled by OmniDiskSweeper and immediately the next second I get that OmniDiskSweeper has forcefully re-enabled UI of windowserver and my whole hard disk is still full!! I also tried booting it up in safe mode but still it has been on the grey apple logo screen for 6 hours until now (and still going on) with no visible progress.
What could be the problem here? Any help?
    Thanks in advance!!

  • Hard Disk Full Error With Plenty of Available Space

Forgive me if this has been posted/asked here before I did a google search as well as tried to search the forum though maybe I had my phrasing incorrect.
When I try to open my itunes I am getting an error saying that my hard disk is full and that I must make room available by deleting files.
I'm running windows 7, my entire itunes library is kept on a Lacie 500G external hard drive with about 350G of space available for additional files so I'm not sure what the origins of this error are an, most importantly how to get it fixed.
I tried a basic reinstall with no luck and am totally clueless here.
    Help.

You need to have a read of the manual here -- you can specify affinities in Xsan and it's possible the default configuration is to fill specific folders first.
It's not a good idea to attempt to manage Xsan without some training or knowledge of the product... this is how "bad things" happen. It's a complicated product which has been made to look simple -- but if you don't know how it works and how to manage it, it's best to not try and work the levers.
I'd suggest reading the manuals, perhaps taking an Apple class, or at the very minimum getting the Xsan Quick-Reference guide from Peachpit press.

  • Locating downloaded TV Shows on my Hard Disk--full start up disk

I received a full startup disk message--I went into my hard disk to get rid of tv shows I've been downloading--only to be totally amazed by all the unknown files. I have no idea what to get rid of. I've been searching for 2 days for the tv shows and I have a dead end. Can someone please assist me. Why are the files hidden? Why is this so difficult?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Whatever program you are using to download the shows probably has a setting to download the files to a specific location. Mind you, you can use this article to find out what is filling your hard disk and where those files are:

How did you try and move the iPhoto Library?

  • New hard disk full when is not

Hi. I have a Mac 10.4.11. Two years ago the original hard drive died so I took it to the computer store and replaced it with a new and larger hard drive. It's working great.
When I go to disk utility, it says
    CAPACITY 297.8
    AVAILABLE 219.2
    USED 78.2
so why do I get the msg that the hard drive is full. Is there anything that I can do to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Sorry for my late answer.
Your previous post: Disc Utility to erase free space bring nothing : the free space is free.  You should verify your disc to see if there is some problem in the file system.
From your second post I understand that you can try to delete some files. Have you already emptied the basket or you do not empty it from time to time ?  There could be a lot of stuff.
Also some Apps have theyr own basket or a place to keep deleted data like mail.
Check if you have duplicates and if you can delete something or move something to an externald Disc.
Best solution whould be to change again the Startup disc with a bigger one.

  • Why is my hard disk full?

    Hi all,
When I go to 'about this mac' - 'more info' - 'storage' - it says i have 60 odd gigs of video on the laptop.
In my itunes library I have about ten but I dont know where the other 50 are?
I use iMovie a lot but have exported my final projects and put them on an external hard drive and deleted all the raw footage from iPhoto. I now have no video in iPhoto and no projects in iMovie but still have this fifty gigs somewhere?
Does the mac store this deleted video somewhere else that I need to delete?
When I am in finder and go to the Video bit it is empty. It doesnt even show the music videos and shows I have in iTunes.
I have emptied the trash and restarted several times but still no luck.
Is there an app that can tell me where these video files are hidden? I really need that fifty gigs back...
    Cheers,
    Katie

Well i dont know if the disk inventory x automatically updates or if you need to reopen it for it to reload to see if the 50gigs is still there. In my experience it is very accurate, if you wait a while i can run it on mine and see if i can more accurately and then come back here and tell you, but right now i am having troubles with migration assistant so it might take a while for me to get back to you on how to see, another option is to go to finder go to your hard drive and sort by size, click on biggest, sort by size in that folder, click on biggest and so on...

  • Macbook Pro hard disk full, how do i store Movie files externally

I have just freed some space, as I was unable to add any new files or Apps.
How can i store my movies elsewhere? i am not bothered about a back up copy, just another storage area. I use them and play via PS3.
I think i have used about 250gb on my Internal HD.
So I bought a 2TB Buffalo Ext hard drive but cant make the Mac talk to it.
    Jocka

Are these movies in your iTunes library?  If so, you can move the iTunes library to an external volume in the Finder and use iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced to change the location in iTunes.  Also, note that if they are movies purchased from the iTunes Store, you only get one download...  so you'll want to keep them backed up, or if something happens to them, you'll have no choice other than to repurchase them (or not have them anymore)!
If they're not part of your iTunes library, just copy them over to the external drive and delete them from the external.

  • Disk Full problem, likely related to extraneous printing files - need help!

I won't go into all the details, but have noticed that over the past couple of months, I've been losing space from my internal 500gb drive at surprising clips. After hard disk full warnings recently, eliminated about 50gb by dumping to dvds. Surprisingly, then again this weekend, hard disk full warnings.
Using 10.3.9 to search for files over a certain size, e.g., 100MB, I was still baffled at why my disk was full, as there weren't enough large files to justify filling up the 500gb (couldn't figure out how to do a search by folder size that gave meaningful results). Decided to do a backup to my 500 gb external HD using SilverKeeper v1.1.3, and noticed that there are thousands or tens of thousands of files in the path HD/Previous Systems/var/tmp/xxxxxxxxxxx. not sure of the number of digits but many have numbers like 490ca.....or 490d03f......(since I've been looking, it looks like all start with the 490..., but vary after that, although might not be watching closely enough). After about 50gb of new data was copied, I aborted the copy operation.
Other observations: oddly enough appears the vast majority (at least the ones I was looking at being copied) are at the same size of 2.322 MB or 184KB. Also, took me awhile to figure out, but these are hidden files. When I search using the finder for invisible files with the name "490" I get results of over 17000 files (less than number of files copied using SilverKeeper) and the file sizes are 2.2MB or 184KB (maybe these are the same due to rounding). These are identified in the path HD/private/var/tmp/490xxxxx..... these appear to be different than what I observed during the HD copying (again, I wasn't looking the whole time). Almost all of these 17k+ files were written during 8 hours on Nov. 1, 2008 - looks like dozens per minute, and when I select all, get info, amount to over 20.44 GB, so maybe still not all the files I saw in my aborted copy operation. All of these files appear to be of the "Document" kind. at the end of this post are excerpts from some of the files. Appear to be related to pdf printing.
I cant' tell where all these files are, what they are, or how they got there. I've reviewed a bunch of the articles on discussion boards, and can't find any direct solutions (at least that would appear to help with this situation). Of course I simply want to delete these apparently duplicative and meaningless files. Any help appreciated!

    Hi Peter,
Why these temporary files are being created I don't know, but there is some malfunction in your printing system (software side).
Have you tried simply trashing those files from the Finder, or do you think there are too many of them to do it manually?
    _Manual method:_
Open Finder > Go > Go to folder, and type in
    /var/tmp
Then you can select them in groups and drag them to the trash.
You will be asked for your Admin password each time you move some to the trash.
Every so often empty your trash, to regain the space.
Another method is to use the Terminal Application, but some people are a bit wary of that application. Ask for directions if you are willing to try that.
Having removed those files, monitor your printing, or save as .pdf actions, and check again that folder in Finder to try and locate which action or process is responsible for creating those runaway temporary files there, because they are likely to be created again.

    Hi,
The 'Full' error message is a failure of the comprehensive ( full ) Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
