Hard disk help!

So I'm running out of disk space on my Mac. I need to upgrade but I have no idea which hard drive to buy. I have my Snow Leopard disk, and I'm going to be buying an external drive so I can finally use Time Machine.
Is there a limit on which size drive I can get?
Any help? Thank you..

Well, I suppose, but it would be easier and safer to first turn off the computer then change the hard drive. Reassemble. Restart the computer, and while holding down the C key insert the installer DVD (it's a DVD, not a CD.)
If you have an external enclosure then put the old drive in the external enclosure. Install the new drive. Boot from the external by restarting the computer and holding down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Now clone the old drive to the new one:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external drive.
Destination means the internal drive.

  • Setting up Time Machine - it won't recognise my external hard disk - help!

I'm trying to set up time machine to use as my back up system. I have an external drive plugged in by USB that the desktop and finder are picking up - but when I got to 'find disk' as I am setting up Time Machine - it doesn't show any disks to choose from.
    Has anyone had this problem?
    Thanks!

The disk is probably not formatted correctly for Time Machine. There's a free download on my website, 33thingsbooks.com, that describes in great detail how to format a TM disk; you might find that helpful.

  • MS 5129 and 40Gb Hard Disk help please!

Hi, first post on these forums!
I have a MS-5129 based system, and I need to upgrade my hard drive. I wasn't aware of the whole capacity limitation thing, so I went and bought a 40Gb drive - feeling pretty miffed now as I couldn't install the darn thing.
The drive is a Maxtor, and apparently I should use the Maxblast 3 software they provide to install the drive. However, I have been unable to do so... I have to set the Cylinder Limitation Jumper to get the drive to auto-detect, but then the Maxblast software crashes (something about "Command not recognized" and "Batch files nested too deeply").
I want to use the new drive as my boot drive. Maxtor says that if I use Maxblast to format the drive (assuming it ever works), I can use the full capacity of the drive. However I have read some posts on here that suggest that if I want to use it as my boot drive I will have to live with 32GB. Maxtor never mentioned this...
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how I can get this drive working with my old MS board?

Thanks for the input, I have now got it working! Thought I'd update the post in case anyone else has similar problems.
First of all, I had to get the BIOS updated. I visited Wim's BIOS  where they have a forum dedicated to just this problem. I requested and received a patched BIOS, and flashed it successfully. The BIOS now auto-detected the hard drive!
The second problem was that the Maxblast 3 software did not work. I don't know if this was due to the age of my board, or my system setup, but it crashed out when I tried to run it. I contacted Maxtor, and they sent me Maxblast 1.27s, which worked just fine!
Thanks for all your help, I really have found these forums to be invaluable!

  • Help!! I need to recover my photos on my failed iMac hard disk

I need some help in recovering my photo's on a failed imac hard disk......
The history to this is that I received the cursed flashing folder with a question mark (?) when I tried to boot into my normal OSX Maverck on my imac - I researched this and there was a possibility of a hard disk error.
I booted off the Mac OSX Snow Leopard CD to access Disk Utility to see if I could repair the hard disk - no luck! I couldn't repair it.
I then installed a new version of OSX Snow Leopard on a external hard disk connected to the Imac through the USB - I then upgraded this version of OSX Snow Leopard to OSX Maverick. This allowed me to reboot the Imac off the external version OSX Maverick. I could subsequently see the failed hard disk on File Manager and have access to all the files on the main account. I don't however have access to other accounts (my wife's) where I store my photo's as there is a folder with a red minus sign denying me permission - I tried to change permission on these accounts but when I right click on the folder and select "Get Info" the permissions tab is greyed out denying me the ability to change permissions.
How do I change permissions on the failed hard disk from my external copy of OSX Maverick? How do I get access to those files so I can receover the photo's?
My ulitmate goal is to recover all the information on the failed hard dsik so that I can reformat the hard disk.
By the way, I tried recovering the photo's using Time Machine but the last history I have is December 2011 which is 2.5 years out of date - something must have gone wrong! I don't want to receover this and lose the most recent photo's on the failed hard disk. Another question with Time Machine - if I perform a back-up today, will I be able to recover the data after I reformat the hard disk - my worry is that I'll only be able to get back to where I man now which is not being able to access the data on the folders that I don;t have permission on.
I really appreciate the groups assistance.
    Lightning_rabbit

I can think of several ways to get the files off.
One is to create a root (super user account) user whcih will have access to everything. Another thing is to duplicate the other accounts that were on the failed drive on the new one and then log in as that user and move them over.
A link to create the root user is here:

i am a OS10.7.4 user. yesterday i bought a Lacie external hard disk but error message appear said " You cant open the applicant LaCie setup assistant because PowerPC applicants are no longer support". please help me how to connect my mac with Lacie??

You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

  • Hard-disk troubles, please help

    Hey all
I am an experienced Mac user but have run into problems with my parents' iMac. It's a Core Duo model from May 2006 and has been super-reliable until the last few months or so. It is a 20" model, with 1Gb of RAM and the various other usuals for that model.
The problem is, often the iMac will not start up and freezes on the grey screen with the Apple logo. The CPU will emit a periodic sound (just your basic 'busy' sound it makes when it's processing as normal) but the OS will not load. Sometimes if it is left for 10-15 minutes it may load. Most times it will just sit on the grey screen with no signs of activity other than the hard-disk spinning down and then cycling up again. Needless to say this is infuriating for my parents and siblings.
I have re-installed Leopard maybe 5 or 6 times since our OS upgrade but the same problem used to occur in Tiger also. When I run disk utility to check the health of the HD, it comes up with problems. Notably, when I try to Verify or Repair the HD, it will not complete the process, bringing up error messages about 'Node failure's and broken 'Sibling Links'? (my apologies for the lack of distinct terminology at this time). I then have to erase and re-format the drive, re-install the OS, everything is fine for a few days and then the problem appears again. Is this an HD discrepancy? It seems that way to me, as if it is corrupting the data stored on it, in particular the important system files required to boot into the OS. The HD is a Western Digital model, the WD2500JS-40NGB2 model.
I have searched discussions but couldn't find any scenarios quite matching my own and would appreciate any help. Our Applecare has run out but I guess we would be open to the idea of replacing the drive if necessary
    Thanks for any advice,
    David

Backup all personal files to an external Firewire drive then do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount as shown in the DU left side list.
    4. After the volumes mount quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed to reinstall OS X.
Upon completion of the installation your computer will automatically restart to the OS X Setup Assistant. Fill in the requisite information. When you get to the point of creating the new admin account be sure to use the exact same account information as before (same shortname and password.) You can then copy your personal files back from the backup you made to their original locations.

  • Help in Configurstion of Oracle Database of Hard Disk 880GB

    Hi,
I have a Hrad Disk Capacity of 880 GB.
I need to Configure the Hard Disk Capacity and use in creation of Oracle Database:
Need help in how to keep space for:
    1.Datafiles
    2.Oracle Binaries
    3.Archive Log
    4.Redo Log
Any help will be needful for me
    Thanks and Regards

What Oracle version (4 digits) are you using ?
What is the operating system ?
What is the expected database size ?
Would database be used for OLTP usage or datawarehousing ?
Does this capacity represents a SAN or NAS disk space or is just the total size of all disks ?
How many disks are involved ?
Do you have any network storage systems such as SAN or NAS ?

  • Hard Disk Not Exist help please

Hi, not sure if this should be in Recovery or Hardware or Operating Systems as it involves all three!
I have an HP G61-110SA running Win 7 64 bit; product no. VR523EA.  Also have serial no if needed.  One problem is, as the laptop is 6 years old, it's hard to remember what came with it.
Whilst using on Thursday it suddenly froze and ctrl/alt/del didn't respond so i held down the power key to turn off.  When I rebooted, I got "PXE-E61 Media Test failure; check cable.  PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.  No bootable device -- insert boot disc and press any key".
I don't have a boot disc as the OS came preinstalled.  So here's what I've tried so far by reading other similar problems in here.
    - Ive taken out the HDD and reseated it.  Reboot then said Hard Disk Not Exist.  Tried reseating again.  Same message.
    - Created a bootable Ubuntu CD and ran that - no response.
    - Created a Ubuntu bootable USB and that has worked except Ubuntu isn't showing the HDD so I can't retrieve anything.
I can however connect my wireless network and at least use Ubuntu in the meantime.
I've ordered a new (same) replacement HDD (a Hitachi 320GB 2.5").  So next problem is how to reinstall Windows 7 without a recovery CD?  Did the old HDD contain the recovery partition drive or would that be located elsewhere thefore still be accessible when the new HDD is installed?
If not, I'm assuming I can still purchase recovery discs from HP?  I know I should be able to create my own recovery discs however, the MS sticker on the bottom of my laptop beside the laptop details, has become too faded to read the important bits!  All I can see is "Proof of License, Certificate of Authenticity, Microsoft Corporation 2005" and "Label not to be sold seperately".  Any letters/numbers are long gone.  So would I be able to find these any other way?  My friend (an IT Manager) said something about DBAN being able to read all that from the HDD but not if it's fried?!
Next problem - I was also using Office 2007 (think it was Home Premium).  Either this came preinstalled (unlikely?) OR it came with a 30 day trial which I could purchase the full version & download the full version from online using a link within the trial?  I think this is what I did because I have no other way of obtaining Office for Windows 7 and yet whatever version I had, had about 3 user licenses because I also installed it on my son's netbook.  I do have Office XP discs for my previous desktop PC (but couldn't have used those surely on Win7)?
And just to add a gripe .... although I certainly got my money's worth out of my old laptop, I'll now have to buy a new one - which I consider a treat - BUT I'm choking at the expense of replacing all the software I need!  Anything I buy new will be Windows 8 which none of my old software was compatable with - same as when I have to previously rebuy it because none of my XP software was compatable with Win7!  But on the plus side, I'm assuming if I install my new HDD on my old lappy, I can also install Ubuntu to the new HDD so at least my 11yr old son can browse and surf on it via Ubuntu.
Can anyone answer/help with any of the above problems?  Many thanks in advance.

  • NEED HELP, old hard disk failed, new hard disk not detected.

My hard disk died, not working, not detected when I restart with the MacOS X DVD and attempt to reinstall.
I have bought a new hard drive, 160 GB ATA - IDE Samsung drive, and carefully replaced it following service manual instructions. All connectors have been carfully but firmly reconnected, and the new hard disk is not detected.
What can i do?? where is the problem??
Thank you very much for your help.

Do you know that the new hard drive is working? As it's new chances are it is, just asking .... do you know it's powering up? If you replug the old not working hard drive in, is it recognized? (this is where you don't put the computer back together, but just replace the hard drive and sort of close it back up, but don't use any bolts close the case). Plus you can feel or clearly hear if the drive is starting up or not.

  • HT202796 I can not copy, modify, any file from my Mac to external hard disk,  of the seagate brand (fast HDD Portable Drive)  I don´t know  if I need some software to copy and  modify files in my hard disk external ? Could you help me please?

    Hello I have a iMac with 3.4 GHZ intel core I7, memory 16 GB 1333 MHZ DDR3, and OS X 10.9.4 Software.
I have problems when I try to copy or modify any file from my MAC to MY PORTABLE DRIVE/DISQUE (external hard disk).
my external hard disk have the next features:
    brand: Seagate
    4TB
I do not know if I need some software such as: paragon or I need to configure my MAC,
    Please help me..
    Thanks a lot

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

    Hi BobRz

  • Cant write/edit data on my external hard disk! Help please!~~

Okay guys, currently, i'm using Tiger version 10.4.11. My problem is that i cant edit data or write data to any external hard disks, like the maxtor One Touch and so on. Only thing i can do is to extract the data from the disks. I have tried to write on multiple hard disks but in all my attempts i have failed. i've tried to edit my network settings, but no results.
So, i seek help from anyone out here!

    Hello, yea.. thanks man =)
Basically, its a shared hard disk between my macbook and a windows PC. So i kinda use the PC to write all my backups and data on the hard disk.
I have quite a few hard disk and they all have the same issue. It says 'The item 'file x'cannot be moved because 'my hard disk' cannot be modified.'I've used the software provided from the hard disk manufacturer, Maxtor/Seagate, to reformat the brand new portable hard disk which i bought yesterday.
Its connected via USB, same as all the other ones i have.
eh. the get info for it says
