Hard Disk icon has vanished

The Hard Disk icon has vanished from my Desktop, and the sidebar of the Finder window.
If I use the little path tool in the toolbar of a Finder window the Hard Disk name is greyed out and I can't select it.
I can navigate to it using the Terminal, or the Go To Folder... menu item, but I can't get it to appear back where it belongs on the desktop.
Any ideas?
Phil

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
tell application "System Events" to set visible of alias "name of hard disk" to true
tell application "Finder" to quit
delay 1
tell application "Finder" to run
Insert the name of the hard disk between the second pair of quote marks, and press the Run button.

  • Two pink "things" at bottom of hard disk icon in sidebar

This is a new one for me. I just noticed that the hard disk icon in my sidebar, as well as in finder preferences where you choose it for the side bar, has 2 little strange pink things at the bottom of the icon. There have little pink vertical pink lines coming out of them. The icon directly on the desktop is normal. I took a screen shot of the one in the side bar, but don't know how to include it (if that is even possible), in this post. Anyway, I restarted my computer and luckily it when away. What in the world was that and should I be concerned about it? Thanks so much!

    Hello LHM:
I never saw anything like that before, but you have corrected the problem. It is somewhat arcane, but a restart sometimes fixes problems.

  • Desktop hard disk icon gone

After installing Yosemite update (10.10.2 (14C78c)), hard disk icon on the desktop has disappeared.
Of course, I checked "Hard disks" from finder preferences.
How can I make the icon visible?

Obviously the harddrive is still working
You may have a corrupted .plist file, but which one I don't know. Someone else might.
If you plug in an external drive does that Icon behave the same way? Or does it work normally?
If you right-click the icon when you see it and select "Get Info" and leave it up does it stay when the icon goes away?
    Is the name Macintosh HD?
Try changing the color of the icon - see if that does anything.
Lastly, create another user with limited power and see what happens to the harddrive under that other user.

  • Curious -- Startup question (Hard Disk icon appear and computer is frozen)

I came home today, turned on my new MacBook Pro 15" and stepped away. A very few seconds later I came back and instead of seeing everything all loaded up as usual, I got a grey screen with a picture of my hard drive in the center with an arrow pointing up towards it under it. I tried to use my mouse, to no effect. Everything was just frozen. No question mark or warning, just a photo-realistic picture of my hard drive (or a standard Apple hard drive) and that arrow. I clicked the power button, and it restarted and everything worked fine. Could someone give me some advice/feedback as to what this was? Is it symptomatic of a more serious hard drive problem?

Wonderlad: If your MBP started up just fine on the second try, and you were able to run Disk Utility's Repair Disc routine twice on it (as in fact you did) without any major problems showing up, you probably have nothing to worry about. It sounds as though you inadvertently pressed the Option key the first time you started up (when the hard disk icon appeared and the startup didn't continue), or made some other minor mistake of that sort.
Each of your hard drives is represented by at least two lines in the left pane of Disk Utility. The upper line for each drive shows the drive's manufacturer and model number (in the case of an external drive, it's the drive unit inside the enclosure, not the maker of the enclosure); the line or lines indented beneath that one are the volumes (partitions) you've created on the drive. It sounds as though each of your drives has only one volume on it, and if that's true, the Repair Disk button has the same effect regardless of whether you've selected the drive mechanism or the volume on it.
When there's a CD or DVD in your optical drive, the optical drive mechanism and the disc also appear in Disk Utility's left pane. Disk Utility can't repair them, though.

  • I can't install Snow leopard on my hard disk which has 10.4.11 on and lots of space.

I can't install Snow leopard on my hard disk which has 10.4.11 on it and lots of space, I run the snow Leopard install disk and it says it cant be installed on my hard disk, which has 160 GB of space.

Which iMac? If it's a G5, the highest OS you can run is Leopard. Are you using the full retail copy of Snow, or a grey, machine specific disc from another computer? If it's the latter, that's the reason.

  • How can I get my LaCie external hard disk icon to reappear on my desktop?

The iMac discussion section does not seem open to me asking this question. It's geared to the Intel Macs or other categories which do not allow for me to type in the following question:
    Bottom Line Question:
How can I get my La Cie external hard disk icon to re-appear on my desktop?
    Background:
    I clicked Go > Computer
At that point there the usual set of icons in the far left hand column, including one for my LaCie external hard disk. Near that icon there was a dark upturned truncated/shortened arrow. I absent-mindedly clicked on that dark arrow, and at that moment I could hear my LaCie external hard drive power down; I heard the sound of hardware powering down.
The LaCie external hard drive is sitting right next to my iMac and its blue light is ON so I know that at very least I didn't turn it off.
    But where is it?
And how can I get it to reappear on my desktop?
Right now when I click onto Go > Computer, the LaCie external hard drive disk is NOT THERE.
    Thank you.

James, yes. I put the question in the iMac section and did get some solutions. My LaCie external hard drive is back now. I was aware that the arrow is connected to Eject actions, but was concerned when I went to Finder Preferences and selected the LaCie to show up on the Desktop, and its icon did not show up on the desktop. I hope you and your family are enjoying the weekend, James. But how could you not: You have little Kate there with you. Lorna in Southern California

  • My calculator icon has vanished, how do i get it back?

My calculator icon has vanished, i have restored my ipad etc. how do i get it back. very weird? please help as i use it often.

The Calculator app (plus Weather, Stocks, and Clock which are on the iPhone) have never been part of the built-in apps on the iPad. I don't think Apple have ever said why they weren't included, but there are many similar apps in the App Store (which may be why they aren't included) .

  • My system disk icon has a question mark in it and does not open now

my system disk icon has a question mark in it and does not open now
and my devices name is gone when i click on FINDER, my favourites is there with the following listed under it-
    ALL MY FILES
    AIRDROP
    APPLICATIONS
    DESKTOP
DOCUMENTS and under documents was the DEVICES word with my Macintosh under it, this is missing... what have i done

Somehow you've managed to delete it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • My home folder and my Hard disk icon have dissapeared from my mac. How do I get them back?

My home folder and my Hard disk icon have dissapeared from my mac. How do I get them back?

Try a restart. If the problem is the same, try deleting the com.apple.finder.plist.
Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command
and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Relaunch Finder (command - option - esc) and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • My safari icon has vanished?

Safari is no longer on my phone?  It is missing in settings also.  How do I retrieve it?  Do I have to reset my phone?
<Duplicate post.  This thread will now be locked.  Please see The safari icon has vanished & is missing in settings for any replies.>

Check if under the General tab in the settingsa app, if you have restrictions on. If so check if it turned off Safari, if so problem solved. But if not the first thing I would then try would be to hold the home and lock button down for about 20 seconds, allowing the phone to restart, and then see if the icon comes back

  • Help.  Lost my hard disk icon

I was foolishly cleaning my key board with my computer on when I seemed to have done something to have made the icon for my PowerBook's hard disk icon to have disappeared. I've tried zapping the P-Ram, booting from an external hard disk and running Disk First Aid and running a search to see if the icon got accidently put into a folder somewhere. No luck. I am able to get into my files by going down to the dock and clicking on the two faces icon which brings up a window that shows my hard disk. But I can't seem to get the icon to appear on the desktop. Any ideas?

Try going to the Finder menu item "Finder" and select Preferences. Verify that in the General section the box is checked to Show Hard disks on the Desktop.
