Hard disk never stops spinning

When I connect my iPod to my Macbook the hard disk never stops spinning. When I connect it to my PC spinning stops after sync with iTunes and just turn on when I access the iPod.
Does anybody know how to turn that off?
Or is Spotlight scaning the data on the disk?

Even it is doing the scaning, it could have been completed and stop. Have you tried to do the Restore for your iPod?

  • MacBook hard disk never stops

My MacBook (Late 2008, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running OS X Lion (10.7.5) has a hard disk that will not stop running lately, even during sleep.  I have a Time Capsule using Time Machine and have iCloud running with iPhone 5 and 2 iPads in the house.  However, this has never been a problem before.  When I have the MacBook running on battery in the house, the batteries even run down in less than 2 hours due to the hard disk and fan constantly running.  Also, it seems to be affecting the speed of the wifi internet access and of the Time Machine backups.  Any ideas please?

  • Seagate Barracuda never stops spinning...is this normal for SG?

    hello all,
I recently purchased a Seagate Barracuda ST3500320AS 500gb SATA drive to use as a backup in my Sonnet external bay. From the moment I mounted the drive, the thing will not stop spinning. Even when I unmount the drive, it spins like it's writing a years worth of data. I have two WD's in my tower, and the other drives in my external bay are Maxtors (which I bought prior to the '06 Seagate buyout).
This is my first Seagate, so I am just curious to see what other's had to say, before I went and got an RMA.
    -cheers

It's normal for a drive to be "spinning" constantly. It is not normal if you constantly hear the sound of the drive being accessed or written to.
Try swapping locations with one of your other drives. Maybe there is a problem with that particular bay.

  • Swirling circle (Firefox activity indicator) never stops spinning in Yahoo Mail

Swirling circle next to cursor always spinning. Occurs after clicking on any folder while in Yahoo Mail Classic. New computer with Windows 7.

    Hello Chett.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Also, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
How many accounts do you have and what type are they (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
Do you have any Mail plug-ins installed? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Left fan never stops spinning

When I bought my MBP two months ago everything was fine. The fan used to work for a couple of minutes and than to stop, unless the processor was too hot. And than something went wrong. It works non-stop. And the CPU temperature is around 100 degrees Fahrenheit (35 Celsius).
What should I do? Could it be any software issue?

Well. Mine is working at 2000 rpm... Your answer makes me feel anxiety-free, somehow.
However, why wasn't it that way in the very beginning? I liked it being so quiet...

  • Time Machine Hard Drive will never enter sleep mode or stop spinning

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone could help me.
When i recieved my MacBook I took the 80gb hard drive out, and placed it in an external USB drive case to use as my backup device, and placed a 120gb drive into the MacBook.
Now when I'm using this drive, it never stops spinning when not in use, and when the MacBook goes to sleep, it still continues to spin, even the light continues to flash whilst the MacBook is sleeping.
Is this because I've bought a naffy external case (it only cost £5 from ebay, it's not even branded with a manufacturers name), or will there be some settings somewhere?
    Thanks guys,
    Seb

p.s. the external drive case is a SATA-Drive case, self powered by the USB 2 connection, there is no external power involved.

  • Hard Drive stops spinning while booting

Recently I've been noticing an issue with my 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2008) where when I start the computer up, the hard drive actually stops spinning while booting. In a quiet environment, you can hear the hard drive spin, but then slow down and go silent, not making any noise at all.  It will hang at the Apple logo and spinning gear for about a minute, then the hard drive will start up again and finish booting. It's very strange, and it only happens while the computer is starting up.
Booting into Verbose Mode does not yield any answers.  I booted to the Lion Recovery partition (which, by the way, boots normally) and used Disk Utility to check the Macintosh HD partition, which did not find any issues with the partition. I have reinstalled Lion, which would temporarily resolve the issue before acting up again, and I've done a full erase and install, again, temporarily resolving the issue before acting up again. I don't know if the drive is failing, even though there are no indicators that it is in the failing stages, or if this is a Lion issue, because this issue was never present when the computer was running Snow Leopard or Leopard. has anyone encountered this issue, or know of a fix??

In an update to this post:  I have replaced the hard drive with a new Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB 7200RPM hard drive with a fresh install of Mountain Lion.  The hard drive worked fine for the first few days, and now the same exact issue as before has returned.  Since it looks like its not the OS, nor the hard drive, could it possibly be the hard drive cable?  Everything else works fine, its jsut during start-up.

  • Time capsule hard drive starts/stops every 5 min: problem?

Every five minutes, whether or not a time machine backup is due, my 1 TB time capsule hard drive starts, spools up, then stops (I used a stopwatch to time the interval).  Is this a problem?  Never happened when unit was new (late 2010), or before Lion.

    Yes, it is a problem..
Firstly check the log if there is a lot of instances of AFP getting logged in and off again.
Try disconnecting everything that is ethernet connected to the TC.. does it still happen.. if yes, turn off all the wireless stuff and see if it still happens.
If it still happens disconnect the wan.
There simply may not be anything you can do about it.. Lion has altered the setting for spotlight to analyse the drive.. but the new firmware also seems to make it worse. Not sure if you can stop it or not.. but it will cause issues over time.. in fact it would be better if the hard disk never spun down than to do it on 5min interval especially if the disk is also parking the heads.
How desperately do you want to pursue the problem??
I would suggest wiping the current setup. And even erase the drive after copying anything you need off it. So you get it back to scratch. You can ring applecare if it is still under warranty. I am not sure they will treat it seriously.

  • Dual G5 hangs while booting from internal hard-disk

    Hi,
When I switched my Dual G5 (2x2.5GHz around 15 months old, 1.5GB ram, 160GB hard disk, OS 10.4.6) on yesterday, it wouldn't boot from the internal hard disk. The spinning "wheel" (under the Apple logo) didn't show up and after a couple (5? 10?) of minutes the fans started making more noise than they ever did. I tried again with the same result.
It did boot from CD though and the disk was accessible. Disk Utility didn't report a problem and the hardware test neither. Subsequent rebooting from the internal hard disk failed again.
Then I reinstalled 10.4 (with archive & install), but with the same result. Then I got a Firewire drive from the computer support department, formatted it, installed 10.4 and copied (nearly) the entire internal hard disk's content to it. I was able to work normally from that disk.
Then I booted again from the 10.4 installation disk, formatted the internal drive, reinstalled 10.4 and then it did boot from the internal drive. I migrated all my files and now everything is working again (although a few things might have gone missing). And I lost nearly a day of work.
I conclude from this that it wasn't the disk, but that somehow an essential part of the boot software got damaged.
My question: how did this happen? What could have caused it? Is there someone with a similar experience (i.e., failure to boot from disk while the disk is still ok)? Is there any way to prevent it from happening again?

we have g5s the same as you. the few times we've ever had an issue with them refusing to boot up have been solved by running diskwarrior. it's an utter 'must have'.
it's a harsh fact that drives (and the operating system that sits on them) do fail from time to time. careful housekeeping (repairing permissions regularly, running disk utility repair and/or diskwarrior) will help to prevent any major problems.
if you have an issue that can't be fixed by doing these things (and we just had one with a file sharing problem) the best course of action is a full reinstall.
we keep a fw800 drive with the latest installers of every application we use handy in each room for this purpose. it's time consuming to stay on top of but worth it when it all goes pear-shaped.

  • Can't get installing "wheel" to stop spinning

I am working on a Mac Book system OSX 10.9.2.
I joined Creative Cloud and paid for the monthly $49..95 fee. When I downloaded it , as it it said it was installing,a spinning blue wheel came up. A red cloud appeared and I was able to "tell it" to stay on the toolbar. However, the tool never stopped spinning. Five hours later, I went to sleep. Now, when I try to open the icon the wheel continues to spin. I tried rebooting in safe mode, but no luck.

  • Primary hard disk suddenly vanished!

This morning I got a lot of pacman updates mostly for gnome 3.14. everything went fine and after the upgrades I did my usually day to day work. I also powered off the system few times during the day and everything was fine.
But in the afternoon, when I wanted to log back into my system (after it had been locked), it wouldn't work! So after a few attempts that log in didn't respond, I restarted the system. after the restart I noticed GRUB isn't working (complaining about not finding hd0) and after a few tests, it didn't go into GRUB either! After "verifying DMI pool data...", a curser just blinks and nothing happens!
So using the installation USB I booted into a shell and after running lsblk, to my supprize I saw that my boot hard disk is not being detected at all! I also checked the BIOS menu and it isn't detected there either! I even opened my case and checked all the connections, they are all firm.
Does this mean my hard disk has stopped working!?!? or might there be a software problem? it is only about 4.5 years I am using it! I would really appreciate any guidance on this issue.
    Thanks in advance

I changed the cables and the SATA ports to this drive with the others and only this hard drive seems to be having a problem, the others are detected in all permutations of cable and SATA ports.
I guess so. I have done a lot of heavy data analysis (read/writes) over these 4.5 years with this hard drive and I guess the GNOME 3.14 update was the last thing It could tolerate! Thanks...
