Hard disk on desktop

In Tiger I used to be able to have my hard drives/external drives, etc. not show up on my desktop but rather in the Finder window only. I can't for the life of me figure out how to recreate that setting in Leopard!
Regards.

Hi James
I don't have Leopard on my Mac at present but, the setting you are looking for is in Finder preferences in Tiger.
Apologies if you have tried this

the icons of the hard disks or another external disks I connecto to my macbook pro does not appear in the desktop, what can I do to make them appear?

Go to: Finder / Finder Preferences / General and check the box for Hard Disks.
Also if they are not showing up in the Finder Sidebar, select Sidebar in the Preference and check the Hard Dick box.

  • Is there a way to merge Mail account A on my desktop with Mail account A on a separate hard disk? I lost all my old messages in July, but they are on the hard disk. Thanks!

Is there a way to merge Mail account A on my desktop with Mail account A from separate hard disks? I lost all my old messages (thousands of them) in July, but most of them are safe elsewhere. I'd really like to put them all in one place, though!
The desktop (iMac) now has messages from July 2012 onward.
My separate hard disk backup has old messages up to June 2012.
Most of the ones between June and July are on a MacBook Pro which I bought about that time.
Is there a relatively easy and safe way to put these messages back together in Mail account A on my desktop again?
    Many thanks!

Well, your profile info says 10.4.11, and you are posting your question in the iMac (PPC) category.  If you are running Snow Leopard, it must be a fairly recent Intel iMac.
In that case, you should definitely post your question here
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard
where other Snow Leopard users can see your question.  Restate the problem, what error messages you get, and what you have tried already (for trouble-shooting).

My Windows 7 Professional desktop system hard disk got corrupted and I took the opportunity to install an SSD for a new system disk and reinstall Windows.  The system is up and running on the SSD, with my old system disk now used for storage as it is still readable.  The only Adobe product I have reinstalled so far is Reader XI but I would like to reinstall Elements 8 and Acrobat 9 without taking up more licences as both are also installed on my laptop.  Can you point me to the best way to do this?  - Thanks

If you have the two allotted activations already and one was lost on the hard drive that failed then you need to contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations.

  • 10.2.8 installation and external hard disk does not show on desktop

I just reinstalled OS X 10.2 (by erasing the hard disk during installation) and upgraded with the Combo pack to 10.2.8 . This is an iMac G4 1GHz with a 17-inch display. I tried connecting a Western Digital MyBook with 500Gb through both the USB port and through FireWire. In both cases the hard drive does not appear on the desktop BUT does appear in the Disk Utility program and in the System Information window. Finder, therefore, doesn't display the drive. The MyBook drive is formatted to Windows FAT 32. Before I reinstalled OS X 10.2.8, this machine was running 10.3.9 and the drive did appear (I'm still searching for the 10.3 disk).
Is this an issue with OS X 10.2.8? Given the drive is detected by the System Information section and by the Disk Utility, is there a way of forcing Finder to display it (and allow access)?

Sometimes I have found that I have to turn of the ext. hd and then reconnect the firewire cables. there is a cylinder that is an inch away from one of the firewire plugs, which should be connected toward the tower and the other firewire plug toward the ext. hd. have patience, sometimes it will show up. also a restart maybe...

  • WD 1TB  ExternaL Hard Disk not seen on desktop/finder

I have been using WD 1TB external USB hard disk for 4 months with my Macbook with Tiger 10.4 on it. I have plugged in the disk after I purchased without any special formatting or anything, and it worked fine so far. It just took a while, about few minutes, for the Macbook to show it on the desktop every time I got it disconnected and connected again. However, this time, I can not see the disk on the desktop nor on the Finder no matter what. I have plugged it in and out several times, I have restarted the machine etc. Nothing works. The disk is quite empty and it works fine with the PC..no cable problem or and disk failure issue for sure. I can see the disk on the Disk Utility app, but I can neither verify nor mount it...Any suggestions would be very helpful..thanks in advance

Unfortuanately WD external HD's have a pretty bad reputation with Macs. It has something to do with their enclosures as their internal HD's seem to work just fine. I would recommend exchanging that drive for one with a higher quality enclose. Just about any other manufacturer would be fine however the 3 best IMHO are:
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    Lacie Quadra d2 series
    G-Tech G-Drive series
All have similar features and build quality. I would be comfortable using any of the three but I've been successfully been using the Lacie's for 3+ years.

  • How can I get my LaCie external hard disk icon to reappear on my desktop?

The iMac discussion section does not seem open to me asking this question. It's geared to the Intel Macs or other categories which do not allow for me to type in the following question:
    Bottom Line Question:
How can I get my La Cie external hard disk icon to re-appear on my desktop?
    Background:
    I clicked Go > Computer
At that point there the usual set of icons in the far left hand column, including one for my LaCie external hard disk. Near that icon there was a dark upturned truncated/shortened arrow. I absent-mindedly clicked on that dark arrow, and at that moment I could hear my LaCie external hard drive power down; I heard the sound of hardware powering down.
The LaCie external hard drive is sitting right next to my iMac and its blue light is ON so I know that at very least I didn't turn it off.
    But where is it?
And how can I get it to reappear on my desktop?
Right now when I click onto Go > Computer, the LaCie external hard drive disk is NOT THERE.
    Thank you.

James, yes. I put the question in the iMac section and did get some solutions. My LaCie external hard drive is back now. I was aware that the arrow is connected to Eject actions, but was concerned when I went to Finder Preferences and selected the LaCie to show up on the Desktop, and its icon did not show up on the desktop. I hope you and your family are enjoying the weekend, James. But how could you not: You have little Kate there with you. Lorna in Southern California

  • Installing 80 gb hard disk from G4 into beige desktop G3

I have a 266 ghz beize desktop G3 with a 4 gb hard drive and 384 mb of memory, running OS 9.2.2. I use the G3 as a spare for my Mirror Door 1.25 ghz G4. I run OS 10.3.9 on the G4. I would prefer to run OS 10.3.9 on the G3.
I thought I would buy a new hard drive for the G4, copy the existing hard drive on to the new hard drive, and install the G4's 80 gb hard drive into the G3. I tried installing the G4 hard drive into the G3 and booting. The screen began showing "No HFS bootable partition" and kept printing this across the screen until about a quarter filled. The screen then reverted to the disk symbol with flashing question mark (can't find the start-up disk).
No problem with the G4 hard disk back in the G4. Not so the G3 with its original 4 gb hard disk reinstalled. I kept getting the same "No HFS bootable partition" printing across the screen and then reverting to the disk symbol with flashing question mark (can't find the start-up disk). I have another working beige G3 and the result was identical.
I tried starting from Nortons and then from the original OS 8.5 CD. After many, many restarts, the G3 began starting from the 4 gb hard disk again (not every time, but appears stable now). Does anyone have idea where I am going wrong. Does it have something to do with the Mac OS extended fromat on the G4 hard disk? Any ideas why the G3 could not find the reinstalled OS9 4 gb drive after my attempt?

Jaguar (OS 10.2.X) will install on the Beige without XPostFacto. There are some hoops (like the under 8GB boot partition) through which we all must pass to install it, but the Beige G3 "officially" supports Jaguar.
Any OS that's 10.3 or higher must have XPostFacto to install on a Beige. XPostFacto writes ROM code that the Beige cannot do alone, permitting the newer OS to install and run.
If you have a retail install copy of Panther, it came on CDs and avoids the DVD problem. Some people have posted here that Panther seems more stable on the Beige than Tiger. From what I can tell, Panther and Tiger, for most uses within the Beige's capability, differ only in Dashboard and Spotlight. Both are cool, but I can live without them.
Partitioning: I make the "under 8GB" partition as large as possible by manually entering "7.99" in the window that shows the desired partition size. The resulting partition comes out around 7.8 G after formatting. If you install Panther or Tiger, you need to have a valid OS9 operating system in the other partition with the XPostFacto application. XPF requires you boot from OS9 and launch XPF, which then loads the required data to get a boot from the OSX installer CD.

  • Hard Disk (Macintosh HD) gone from my desktop and Finder sidebar.

Hello. My hard disk is gone from my desktop and I can't find it in Finder as well. I tried logging into a different user account and it doesn't show up either. I don't know if a cache file in my first account might be the problem. Also if I try Shift>Command and press C, it is not there either I just see my network icon. Any help is appreciated.

  • Boot Camp Hard Disk Visible on desktop to users

I am the system admin and have 2 different user account logins. The Hard disk is visible to both users on the desktop and they can open and access the contents. How can I make the drive invisible to the users so they can't mess with it or at least locked. This is a high school lab we're talking about...

If the XP "drive" is FA32, you can change it in Leopard.
Right-click it and select "Get Info"
In the box with the drive name, simply insert a "." in front of the name.
You can also change the name using the terminal
If the XP drive is named XP, for example, in a terminal enter
    cd /Volumes
    if you then enter
    ls
you will see the XP drive. Enter
    mv XP .XP
again, replace XP with whatever yours is named.
There is a better way, however, which does not require making the drive invisible:
You can change the permissions on the drive via the terminal, if you are familiar or comfortable with the terminal commands. You can set it so only you can read it.
    My permissions are
    drwxr-xr-x 1 nerowolfe nerowolfe 12288 Jun 3 12:07 VistaUlt
I believe that if you change it to
    drwx------ 1 nerowolfe nerowolfe 12288 Jun 3 12:07 VistaUlt
that will also take care of it.
The default permissions give all users "r" privileges

  • Finder/Desktop not recognizing/seeing external Hard Disks

For 2 weeks, I've used two external hard disks for Time Machine. Both have Mac partitions, with GUID Partition table, and Mac OS Extended (journaled) format. Things worked for 2 weeks.
Then today, the Mac wouldn't recognize one of the Hard Disks, i.e. the disk icon does not appear on the desktop, and the Disk Utility does not see them either.
I thought the problem was one of the disks, so I attached the other disk, and that one doesn't appear on the Desktop or Disk Utility either.
Concurrently -- and I don't know if these issue are related -- I see that the iMac doesn't seem to turn on automatically when I press the on-button. Instead, I have to keep it depressed for a long time before it comes on.

A few hours later, it started working again. No idea why it happened, and no idea why it resolved.

    Hello,
to reinstall CC shouldn't be a problem. You could download all the programs you need in the "try" Version from Adobe's download website. Because you have all needed serial numbers and so on, you can change your programs into "real" versions.
Maybe it'*s necessary, that you have to activate/deactivate pleae have a look there:

  • Cannot mount USB Hard Drive (750GB LaCie Desktop Hard Disk USB2 K)

I recently purchased a 750GB LaCie Desktop Hard Disk USB2 K, and used it to back-up my NAS (Ready NAS NV+). Now I want to transfer some of this data on the Lacie at a separate location to a Time Capsule, via my MacBook. When I insert the USB cable into TC it seems to recognize the disk, but I cannot see the contents (I have a separate post on this).
WHen I insert the USB cable into my MacBook, I get the message:
"The Disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
I (THOUGHT) I had formatted the disc as ext3, but do not recall (and cannot access my notes remotely). Is there anyway I can use disk utility to check the formatting, or does the message above give the game away?
    Any thoughts appreciated!

I did not think that EXT3 support was built into OS X. There are various utilities around but I do not know how well they work and they would only be useful for the Macbook.
