Hard disk partition issue and space issue

Hello i was trying to do a partition on my hard disk on my macbook pro retina. Wen i go to disk utility and try it says i need to repair the disk. I used command r in reboot and repaired but still having issues. When i look at space i get two different space available on macintosh HD. Here are the pictures you will see the space available is different depending what i choose. I am confused. Any help is appreciated. Here are the pics.

When you boot using Cmd-R, you're booting from a hidden Recovery Partition. That partition is using part of the space that is the size difference you're seeing between the Media line (upper picture) and the boot partition line. You can turn on the Debug Menu which shows the extra partitions using these directions.
I'm not sure but I suspect the issue may be that your boot partition is encrypted.

  • Want to use a Lacie External Hard Disk with Windows and Mac? Can I?...

Hi, I've just purchased a Lacie Extreme D2 external hard disk, I'm looking to use it to move film clips from my Mac G5 to my Sony Vaio laptop. I'll connect the Mac using Firewire 1 and the PC using USB 1.
I understand there is an issue with setting the compaitibility of the hard disk to either Mac or Windows format but I'm wondering if I can set it to both, so it's possible to transfer these files? The hard disk is Windows and Mac compatible but does it have to be partitioned a certain way?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alex

Format the drive as FAT or use the Mac format (HFS Extended) and install MacDrive on the PC.

    Hi there,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that your hard drive is not showing up, presumably as a bootable partition. I am happy to help, but I need a bit more clarification of your problem. You mention a 0x00000116 error as well, which is normally part of a Blue Screen of Death. Does this happen regularly as well, or is that the real complaint, that you are getting the 0x code and a BLue Screen on startup?
That particular code is generally associated with a video driver problem.
Is the hard drive you are trying to install to, a new replacement hard drive or the original hard drive?
If you try to boot up the system, what error do you see?
Are there any repeating flashing LED patterns, or beeping patterns?
Assuming this is your original installed hard drive, did you try the recovery manager for the drive?

Help, I installed parallel and windows, and opened videos (on an external hard disk) with windows, and now cannot open them with Mac, and use i movies.  How do I reverse this?

Paragraphs help the reader, just saying.
What are you actually trying to do? Why do you need "DVD size" folders if you're creatng an Archive on an external hard drive?
Also, I understand burning folders instead of individual photos or albums gives you more space on a DVD.
It makes no difference at all.
How can I keep the captions on my photos (not events) when I print or transfer to a new folder?
You can export while writing the metadata to the file in most cases.
Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.
HD? Another HD? You use HD there in a way that makes no sense. What's the point of 'DVD size'?
I also thought I should download future photos to my Canon programming that comes with EOS cameras and edit and then decide which photos to save to iPhoto library and which to save only to my archival HD?
Does this have any relation to the previous questions? You know you can delete from iPhoto, right?
You're somewhat confused and you need to
    1. Decide what exactly you want to do
    2. Then go about it.
If I understand you correctly - and there's no guarantee that I do -  the easiest thing is to bring all your Photos into iPhoto and do everything from there.
You can have an archive on an external disk, you can sort and select and edit with or via iPhoto

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and

  • Hard disk has no more space available for application memory

I keep this getting this error after my applications freeze for several minutes.
"Your hard disk has no more space available for application memory."
I have 1 drive with 160 GB and 46 GB available. I'm pretty sure that's plenty of free space. And why does my memory need my drive? I've got 2.5 GB of memory. That should be plenty sufficient to run Safari without needing virtual memory.
    Help!

Hello! OSX uses a virtual memory scheme and even though you have a lot of ram it still utilizes the paging file. Panther 10.3.9 and below runs maintenance routines very early in the morning to clear temp files and other stuff. If you don't normally leave it on 24/7 then you may need to consider a utility to clear the temp files and do the routine maintenance. Tiger 10.4+ runs these automatically. I suggest leaving it on all night for a day or so and then restarting and see if the problem clears up. Here's a list of utilities such as Macjanitor.Tom

  • Curious -- Startup question (Hard Disk icon appear and computer is frozen)

I came home today, turned on my new MacBook Pro 15" and stepped away. A very few seconds later I came back and instead of seeing everything all loaded up as usual, I got a grey screen with a picture of my hard drive in the center with an arrow pointing up towards it under it. I tried to use my mouse, to no effect. Everything was just frozen. No question mark or warning, just a photo-realistic picture of my hard drive (or a standard Apple hard drive) and that arrow. I clicked the power button, and it restarted and everything worked fine. Could someone give me some advice/feedback as to what this was? Is it symptomatic of a more serious hard drive problem?

Wonderlad: If your MBP started up just fine on the second try, and you were able to run Disk Utility's Repair Disc routine twice on it (as in fact you did) without any major problems showing up, you probably have nothing to worry about. It sounds as though you inadvertently pressed the Option key the first time you started up (when the hard disk icon appeared and the startup didn't continue), or made some other minor mistake of that sort.
Each of your hard drives is represented by at least two lines in the left pane of Disk Utility. The upper line for each drive shows the drive's manufacturer and model number (in the case of an external drive, it's the drive unit inside the enclosure, not the maker of the enclosure); the line or lines indented beneath that one are the volumes (partitions) you've created on the drive. It sounds as though each of your drives has only one volume on it, and if that's true, the Repair Disk button has the same effect regardless of whether you've selected the drive mechanism or the volume on it.
When there's a CD or DVD in your optical drive, the optical drive mechanism and the disc also appear in Disk Utility's left pane. Disk Utility can't repair them, though.

  • How can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?

QuestionHow can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?
AnswerThere are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your hard disk drive is used optimally.
    Use Toshiba HDD Protection
Many Toshiba laptops come with a program called Toshiba HDD Protection pre-installed. This program helps to protect your hard disk drive from being damaged due to falls or impacts. By default, it should already be enabled. You might be tempted to lower the detection levels in this application, but doing so could cause your hard disk drive to be damaged. Remember that while the application can reduce the chance of damage, you should still avoid allowing the laptop to fall or suffer rapid impacts.
For more information on this utility, see the following article:
    TOSHIBA HDD Protection
    Optimize the drive
Windows 8 and Windows 7 optimize hard disk drives automatically through a process called defragmentation. Unless you've disabled this, you don't need to do anything. If you have disabled this and want to run the process, you can still do so.
In Windows 8, search for "Defrag" at the Windows Start screen and select "Defragment and optimize your drives."
In Windows 7, search for "Defrag" in the Start Menu's search field and select "Disk defragmenter."
You can use this tool to optimize your hard disk drives, allowing Windows to find needed files faster.
    Remove items from startup
Some applications run automatically when Windows starts. This can add additional functionality, but it also decreases the performance of your computer. Sometimes you might want to disable certain programs from starting automatically.
In Windows 8, search for "Task Manager" at the Start screen. Select the "Startup" tab. Select an application you'd like to disable from starting automatically and then click the "Disable" button in the lower-right.
In Windows 7, type "msconfig" in the Start Menu's search field and press ENTER. Uncheck the boxes next to applications you'd like to disable from starting automatically.
You should be sure of the purpose of an application before disabling it from starting automatically. Some applications might be important. If in doubt, you might consider searching on the Web to discover more information about a program. Remember that if you find that you disabled something vital, you can always re-enable it.

My Windows 7 Professional desktop system hard disk got corrupted and I took the opportunity to install an SSD for a new system disk and reinstall Windows.  The system is up and running on the SSD, with my old system disk now used for storage as it is still readable.  The only Adobe product I have reinstalled so far is Reader XI but I would like to reinstall Elements 8 and Acrobat 9 without taking up more licences as both are also installed on my laptop.  Can you point me to the best way to do this?  - Thanks

  • My hard disk broke up and i had to reinstall LR on the same computer, do i have to pay again???

My hard disk broke up and i had to reinstall LR on the same computer, does LR will recognize i'm using the same computer or should i have to use one of my 3 codes i bought together with the product? In this last case i think it's not fair because it's not my fault the program has been deleted, but it was due to a faulty hard disk

Sorry but i can't explain properly my problem. When i bought my copy of LR, adobe gave me a serial number to use 3 times to install LR on 3 different computers. I installed it on my mac, on my pc and now, due to the faulty hard disk, i have to reinstall LR on my mac. When i ll input the serial number on my mac, will i use the third possibility to use my serial number or LR will recognize it was installed before on that computer and i will have the possibility to use the serial number for the third time on a third computer? Thank you very much for your patient!!!

  • Hard disk test? and when to tighten?

hard disk test? and when to tighten?

I'm not quite sure what you mean either, but if you are worried about the state of the hard drive then this is probably the information you need...
Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for Manual Test, then select IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine taken when my 6th Generation Classic was about 2 years old:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press SELECT & MENU for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    Reallocated Sectors Count
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    Pending sector count
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.
