Hard disk rename (When bootcamp setup)

Hi!
I have installed Bootcamp on my macbook pro running yosemite. So I have two partitions: Yosemite and BOOTCAMP. But the Hard disk has taken the name of the old OS (Mavericks). How do I change this back to the physical drive name, or anything else?
See screenshot.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Geraint.

This is only a cosmetic issue and has no impact on any of your systems. I suggest to simply ignore this and do not worry about it as unsuccesful attempt to make a change can cause you a data loss.
However, if you are looking for some steps to change the name to something different, then to change the name of Logical Volume Group you will need to boot your mac to Recovery Mode, open Terminal and use a terminal command - diskutil:
diskutil cs rename Mavericks NewName
Before you do any attempt of renaming, i would suggest to make sure you have a solid backup of both of your Systems. For OS X you can use Time Machine Backup. I do not use Windows, so i do not know what software you could use to backup Windows.

  • Problem cloning hard disk for 10.6 setup

    Hi all,
I just got Snow Leopard for my office MacBook Pro and for my home MacBook. On both machines I got an error message when trying to install it that my partition scheme is not GUID, so 10.6 won't install.
First I worked on the MBP. It has a 250 GB internal HDD of which 105 GB were used. So I grabbed a 160 GB USB disk, booted from the SL DVD and cloned the internal HDD to the USB one (using Apple's Hard Disk Tool). I enabled the "Delete target volume" option, which worked fine. After re-partitioning the internal HDD with a GUID volume and cloning all the stuff back, SL installed without any problems.
Now I tried the same on my home MacBook. It has an internal 500 GB HDD of which 97 GB were used. When I tried to clone it to the external 160 GB drive, the program complained that there is not enough space ("Delete target volume" switched on). So I switched off the Delete... option (the drive was empty anyway) and copying started, however I ended up with only 92 GB on the USB drive.
I assumed that some indices whatsoever were not copied and - since I still have a Time Machine backup of the internal HDD - decided to copy the stuff back to it after GUID-partitioning the internal drive. This went through last night (all the 92 GB were returned to the hard disk), but now the MacBook won't boot up. It stops with a grey screen.
Any idea what gives that? Why did I end up with 5 GB less on the USB drive?
I will now have to start from scratch, install 10.6 on the internal drive after deleting it and do a migration of my data from the Time Machine backup. This should give me a clean environment but preserve all my data and settings (at least this is what I read so far...
    Any comments, anyone?
    Thanks & best wishes,
    Thomas.

solved. Got home this evening and switched on the MacBook while holding "alt" down, selected the internal volume and it booted up fine. So far I see nothing that is missing, Spotlight is indexing the hard drive, so I guess this was the resaon for 5 GB less on the copy. Anyway, I will install the SL upgrade soon, just over Leopard which is installed on the MB now.
    Best,
    Thomas.

  • X230 Hard disks issue when deploying in corporate environment

We got a batch of X230 laptops recently and i've cam across an odd problem. Wuhile deploying win7 I hit some problems with the disks. We wont be using the SSD disk that comes preinstalled so w will install Win7 on the large disk. Heres my problem. some laptops have differing hard disks. when diskpart is run on one the SSD is shown as Disk 0., when its run on the other with differetn disks its shown as disk 1
    Laptop 1
    Seagate - 298GB disk (ST320LT007)
    SanDisk SSD - 22GB -
    Run Diskpart
    Disk 0 : 22GB
    Disk 1 : 298GB
    Laptop 2
    HGST - 298GB (HST725032A7E630)
    Samusng SSD - 22GB (MZMPA024HMCD)
    Run Diskpart
    Disk 0 : 298GB
    Disk 1 : 22GB
Obviously this will be a problem when running a deploy job. It will require 2 build jobs and the tech will have to enter the BIOS to see what hard disk is installed. Any idea why this is like this. Am I able to change this in the BIOS!

    Guys,
Several months on now has anyone found an answer to this?
I have exactly the same issue where I want to be able to choose which classification each disk goes to.
I understand that by design you want to abstract the paths and LUNs etc from the users, even the admins, but you need to be able to say "this disk is Gold, this disk is Bronze".
Ideally you would be able to change the classification while the machine is running and have that change trigger a storage migration. VMM could then choose the best path for that classification and migrate that disk while leaving the rest of the VM where
    it is.
I understand you can perform a storage migration after deployment and in 2012 R2 you can specify different paths per disk but I really don't want myself or my other admins worrying about paths, just classifications. Within storage migration you cant just
specify a classification and this approach seems to go against the very design.
Basically I don't think Microsoft has thought this one through very well.
Any new suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Michael

  • No Hard Disks found when installing

    Hi,
Because I have a new PC that has a motherboard that has a kind of RAID controller onboard that is not (yet) certified by Sun, I've been trying to install Solaris 8 on a somewhat older PC. It's a P133 with 96 MB RAM and a 2.5 GB HD (IDE).
Altough the Configuration Assistant finds my HD and CD ROM (and there are no conflicting devices), when the Web Start Solaris Installer looks for a hard disk, he reports: "No hard disks found on the system. Please see your documentation."
I've been trying to change parameters in the BIOS of my PC: set hard disk mode from LBA to CHS or Auto, but I keep getting the same result. What is also funny is that I can issue the 'format' command after the installer stopped. There I can use 'fdisk' and I can create x86boot and Solaris partitons as I like. (I cannot format them though.)
    What 's going wrong?
    Best regards,
    Dominiek

Did you try: destroying the "x86, Solaris" pair, re-booting, running installer, recreating "x86, Solaris" and re-starting the installer with "/usr/sbin/c0d0_isntall"? I have to do that EVERY time...
    HOWEVER !!
Your drive might have a drive manufacturer LBA scheme installed - which may not be compatible with your BIOS LBA scheme (docs can be found on www.westerndigital.com). Frequent disk errros is one symptom.
You should have the install disk for your particular hard-drive. It will indicate whether a drive-manufacturer LBA is installed. You BIOS setting is of course a separate issue.
    1) If you have an existing partition: * do not alter the LBA scheme *
    2) In general, partitions with an Operatitng system installed when LBA was enable must have the exact same LBA (by BIOS manufacturer, BIOS version, or hard-disk manufacturer) SUPPLIED AT EVERY BOOT. Some OS's ignore the BIOS's LBA offering.
    3) The LBA-written data is NON-REVERSIBLE. LBA written data is, in general, PER-PARTITION. You must do a complete backup, format, and restore to change you LBA scheme.
    4) If you don't know your complete LBA status - you should be concerned. In general, move away from LBA when the opportunity arises.
You might contact your motherboard manufacturer upon the matter of obtaining a BIOS upgrade. Also: what brand HD do you have?
    Hope that help,
         john

  • Hard disk corruption when I autofill?

When I plug my shuffle in and hit autofill, it only fills up to 1.3 gigs or so. Then, I get a big yellow triangle in the Windows XP Taskbar saying there's been a serious error. I then receieve messages telling me that my external disk where all my music is stored (the "J" drive), has an error. It comes up something like, "J:/$Mkb" or some other weird $ name cannot be created, and data was lost. iTunes then loses all of the songs (has the "!" by all of them). I then proceed to check the hard drive, and all of the data is missing. When I remove the shuffle and restart the computer, all of the information is still there.
Why is the iPod Shuffle causing corrupt synchs, and messing with my drive? Should I reformat the iPod?
Although my info says otherwise, for this sync, I'm using Windows XP Sp3 on a Compaq Presario SR1103WM. My iPod Touch works fine and doesn't do this.

I learned that the shuffle halts the bootup process because there is no system file available on the device. Which is of course a reasonable explanation.
I decided to check the Windows Event Logs. I found:
"Application popup: Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file J:\$BitMap. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
"Application popup: Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file J:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
Dozens of errors including: "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk5\D during a paging operation." under the disk source
Error: "{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere." under the NTFS source
Error: "The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur." under the ftdisk source.
None of these occur until I plug in my iPod Shuffle. I am forced to reboot my computer (minus the shuffle) in order to regain "lost" files.

  • Hard disk error when syncing

    Hi Guys.
The other day the ipod had a hit on the floor, and since then im having problems with the hard drive when copying songs.
Im able to transfer some music to the ipod but when it reaches a bad sector, starts having issues copying the song.
When Itunes tries to sync, it takes a long time to copy a single song (ipod change status from Syncing/Connected) and it ends with a message error stating disk could not be read/written
I tried running the Diagnostic Mode. and the HD SMART Data shows
Realloc 9624 ( this number is growing after each sync)
    Pending 216
Should I reformat the disk using HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool? Is this a valid way to fix the bad sectors?
What options do you suggest to fix the HD?
    Thanks!

  • New hard disk full when is not

Hi. I have a Mac 10.4.11. Two years ago the original hard drive died so I took it to the computer store and replaced it with a new and larger hard drive. It's working great.
When I go to disk utility, it says
    CAPACITY 297.8
    AVAILABLE 219.2
    USED 78.2
so why do I get the msg that the hard drive is full. Is there anything that I can do to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Sorry for my late answer.
Your previous post: Disc Utility to erase free space bring nothing : the free space is free.  You should verify your disc to see if there is some problem in the file system.
From your second post I understand that you can try to delete some files. Have you already emptied the basket or you do not empty it from time to time ?  There could be a lot of stuff.
Also some Apps have theyr own basket or a place to keep deleted data like mail.
Check if you have duplicates and if you can delete something or move something to an externald Disc.
Best solution whould be to change again the Startup disc with a bigger one.

  • Why can't I get the full amount of hard disk space when I reformat?

I have a 750 GB external Western Digital. I reformatted it using extended journaled setting. When it's all ready to go why do I only get 700 GB available as free space and not the full 750 GB? What is occupying the remaining 50 GB? I guess I could understand a gig or two that I couldn't use, but 50 GB, that's 15% of the disk!!!!
    Thank you

    Gets asked frequently....
    500GB = 465GB too. Or 1000GB = 933GB.
Then, you will find the last inner tracks are drastically slower than the outer 1/3, too. So chop some off for performance.
699GB is 'normal.' The new WD 640GB Caviar = 599GB, great drive and seems slightly faster than the 750GB due to higher density recording.
You can build your own and choose the drive and case that meets your needs, and avoid the vendor 'tax' or WD "features" and go with a Oxford based FW/USB/eSATA cases.

  • Cannot recover hard disk space when deleting and huge sparseimage

    hi there,
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.3 (8F46)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 8.3.0
my problem is that I found the mac was running slow and I noticed the harddisks were getting full:
    [veronique:/Users/e] e# df -H
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s3 60G 59G 729M 99% /
    devfs 102K 102K 0B 100% /dev
    fdesc 1.0K 1.0K 0B 100% /dev
    <volfs> 524K 524K 0B 100% /.vol
    /dev/disk1s2 60G 59G 725M 99% /Users/e
    automount -nsl [246] 0B 0B 0B 100% /Network
    automount -fstab [250] 0B 0B 0B 100% /automount/Servers
    automount -static [250] 0B 0B 0B 100% /automount/static
Im not sure why they became this full but.. I then looked for big files and found a sparseimage of 40GB. I can mount it and all so it s in good shape.
I needed to free up space and I delete a lot of music files, pictures, a virtual pc file of several gigs and so forth, but when I ran a new df -H things had nt changed.. So im guessing all the data, inclusive deleted data is in the sparseimage? is this so? I ve emptied the trash several times.
I ve now tried to turn filevault OFF but it asked me to free up 1.9Gb.. catch 22.. if I rid myself of files it wont see more freed up space...
is there something I can do? I could mount the sparseimage and browse it and delete files there or back up whatever I need and then get rid of it? should I re install?
any help needs to go to [email protected] i went into my settings but didnt find out how to change my email. thats not impressive i know
    eric

Here's what I had to resort to to forcibly reclaim missing free space on my FileVault-encrypted PowerBook G4.
After several days and more restart/shutdown trials than I can count, I could not for the life of me get my PowerBook to give me the "Reclaim free space" option that usually pops up. Not sure why. But, I was missing nearly 12GB of free space and kind of needed it.
I was able to force a space reclaim... but the process isn't exactly point-and-click.
•I mounted the PowerBook via Firewire target disk mode on my desktop and copied over my PB account's .sparseimage file to my desktop (didn't want to work on the original file in case I screwed it up).
•Used the terminal command "hdiutil compact" on the .sparseimage file (type "hdiutil compact " (with a trailing space) then before hitting return, drag the icon of the .sparseimage file on to the terminal. That'll insert the path of the file. Hit return.)
•Let it run. Took about 15 minutes or so. On a 27GB .sparseimage, the procedure recovered 12.5GB!
•Deleted the original .sparseimage from my PowerBook, emptied the trash, and copied over the newly compacted one. Rebooted the PB, and voila!
Do keep in mind though that you'll need at least as much free space as your Home folder occupies itself if you want to turn FileVault off.

  • 5th gen ipod video makes hard disk sounds when playing certain songs and lags then frrezes when trying to change

it makes a constant clicking noise like its stuck but plays the song fine till i try and change songs. it freezes, but the song still plays fine. any idea on what it could be? 30gb classic...

When the iPod starts to make non-music noises like clicking and stutters, it is a sign that some cluster of your hardisk is going bad.
The Restore do help by Reallocating the bad cluster, so that iTunes don't put any music there, anyway there are pending sectors, which is marked good after several tries, and iTunes put music there. So your problem will come back again, depending on how tender you are with your iPod.
So do a backup as soon as you can, use a 3rd party software if you need to backup from your iPod to portable hardisk, if you haven't backup your iTunes library.

  • Windows XP SP2 did not find the bootcamp hard disk

after making the windows partition ( 32 GB) with boot camp ( version 2) assistant, I restart my Macbook ( hard disk is a SSD drive from Intel X-25 M) with my Windows Xp install cd. The drivers are loaded but at the end when we have to choose which hard disk to choose, Windows tells me he cannot find any hard disk.
when I return to the installed Mac OS X 10.5.6, I can see both my Mac hard disk and the bootcamp hard disk.
It seems that Mac OS does the work properly, but the drivers to enter the Windows set up are not loaded.
Any one has a suggestion to resolve this?

please integrate intel ahci driver into your xp cd using winlite program.

  • Noise from hard disk when stressed

    Hi all,
I experienced a scratching noise coming from the hard disk (?) when the computer is stressed (e.g. iWeb, Photoshop, etc.).
I checked the CPU usage and the fan rpm but the noise continues even though the fan is swirling very low and the CPU is at its minimum value so I think it is a hard disk related issue.
