Hard Disk Space ? Confused!!
I don't know if this makes any sense, but I only have 1500 songs in itunes and not many pictures on iphoto but I get a message saying that my hard disk is almost full when I try to download or update something.
My friend has over 10,000 songs on her macbook but they take up less room than my 1500 do! Is that possible?
I'm confused

Why thank you, Carolyn I had similar troubles awhile ago.
For the OP (and any others wondering), see Niel's posts first off.
Beyond that, I've found that songs encoded with AAC are a better quality than the MP3s. If you don't need MP3s for a portable music player, stick with AAC. If you ever need the MP3 version, you can convert the file later.
As for how you choose this, click the iTunes menu, then Preferences. Click the "Import Settings" button & change it to mp3 or AAC. Once you've converted the files--you might need to do this in small chunks due to low disk space--make sure you delete the larger files!
If either of you needs further instruction, please ask!

Confused about hard disk space
ok, I am new to Apple and not a computer person per say, so I am very confused when all of a sudden my new computer is now telling me I do not have enough space on my hard disk to download things. I have downloaded pictures and videos but have never had this problem with my old pc and I have more disk space on my apple. am I doing something wrong?
and, I tried to move some of my photos that I downloaded onto a disk to free up some space but it's not letting me move the originals. I'm getting super frustrated -- HELP!Agreed, jtandi, we would be happy to help.
Have you checked your system profile to see how much hard disk space you have available? If not, follow these steps and let us know what you find.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top left of your menu bar
- Click More Info
- Your MBP displays a summary screen, Click "More Info"
- Your MBP displays a more detailed information tree. Click "Serial-ATA" under Hardware
- your MBP displays information on your hard disk. Look towards the bottom of the display. You will see the name of your hard drive. If you have not renamed your computer, it will be Macintosh HD. Below the name will be your hard drive's "Capacity" and "Available" in GB's. Let us know what these two readings are -

Problem with Photoshop CS5. Memory and Hard disk space Mac OSX
Just got CS5 Master Suite. Whenever I open photoshop it takes a ton of memory 1 gig +. When I open files it takes up more and more until it takes up all my memory and hard disk space. I open a simple multi layered file that is 25 megs in size to work on it. Before I know it photoshop is taking 20gigs+ of my hard disk space along with 3+ gigs of system memory. Is there a memory problem in photoshop cs5?
Thanks!
Joseph
UPDATE:
So I just opened the 25 meg file in photoshop cs5 and watched my free space on my hard drive go down 8 gigs the instant I opened it. It went from 27 gigs of freespace to 19 instantly. As I open more files and close others it works till my harddrive goes to zero space... stalls the computer big time. Only way to correct it is to quit photoshop cs5 and wait a few minutes for the space to return... and it takes a few minutes for it all to return.
I am running a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6., 4 gigs of ram on board.

I don't know what the problem of my macbook pro mid 2010. When I erased a program or files, my hard disk spaces become full but when I installed program or download files my hard disk space diminish. My mac running OS X Maverick 10.9.2.
Pranyana,
do you regularly make Time Machine backups? If so, then the apparent discrepancy could be explained by the behind-the-scenes creation and deletion of local Time Machine snapshots. -
Hi All. I'm seriously losing hard disk space on my Macbook Pro 17 and it's been doing this heavily since I installed Lion.
My laptop has a 160GB hard drive. Out of this, I can add up only 70GB of files. Add another 20GB of free disk space so that totals 90GB. What's happened to the remaining 50GB hard disk space? Are there invisible files being written that I need to look for? Please help as this is really frustrating. Even using WhatSize doesn't add up to all the hard drive space I should have.Naz Hussain wrote:
On mobile backups I only have 1.3MB. I use Time Machine but that goes to an external hard drive.
By default, Lion on notebook computers will also save backups to your local disk. If you have many large files that are changing, that could account for your space.
If any software is creating directories then I can't see it.
The curl and ffmpeg make me suspect that you have some torrent or peer-to-peer software. Such software would generate many large files that Time Machine's local snapshots would backup. It would also be likely to save such files in temporary directories that are hidden. -
Hello all
Well I'm glad to say I'm near the end of my first FC project, it has taken me a couple of months but I'm for the most part of happy with and, it has been a learning experience for sure...
One thing I have learned is the amazing amount of hard disk space consumed, this has me questioning a few things.
Is it normal for an average of 1 minute to consume 1 Gig of HD space ?
What is the best way for one to manage HD space when working with FC ?
I know I'll need to up-grade my HD to one much larger, my thought is going with an external HD. If all goes as planned I'll have a G5 and can retire my G4.
Thanks for any and all advise....
James"If you get an external HD make sure it is a Firewire one and not a USB 2.0."
My advice (from bitter experience) is to get TWO separate external HDs, one for the Scratch and one as a backup of the Scratch, backed up regularly. If the Scratch disc fails you will have to re-capture from your camera and if you have several active projects that is a pain - in fact a disaster if the failure damages the captured files and you can't re-shoot.
A RAID seems an attactive proposition because whenever you save a file to the RAID, (and I think that applies to capturing), the data are written simultaneously to the other drive in the RAID, so making a continuous and automatic backup at thast time. However, if the internal power supply circuitry in the RAID case failes, both drives fail. So two HDs, each in a separate case, seems safer. -
Hi,
After dropping a couple of tables, the system does not free up hard disk space.
How can I resolved this issue ?
kindly advise.
thanks.
andrewMy server has 19 GB disk space and 49MB free space. There are about 450 tables with live data. The size of each tables varies from 1.7GB to 10MB.
1. Auto resize of datafiles will not decrease the space but increase the datafiles.
2. If resize the datafiles to 100MB will prevent the data growth
I am stuck.
What would be the recommended solution ? -
OS X Mavericks required space 8 GB. Does this mean 8GB of free Hard Disk Space?

It does. But you need a whole lot more free disk space than that. Having 8 GB of RAM wouldn't be a bad idea either. -
When i import movies from my iPhoto app to my iMovie app does it make a copy (thereby using double the hard disk space) or does it link to my iPhoto app? The reason i ask is i want to archive all my videos from iPhoto/iMovie. Do i need to archive the movies in iPhoto AND iMovie? HELP!
Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?
Thanks for any info! -

How much hard disk space remains?
Sorry, the Missing Manuel for Lion isn't available until the end of the month, but I have a lot of basic questions.
With Snow Leopard when i opened a Finder window at the very bottom of the window pain was information on how much memmory was being used by whichever folder I had opened. I know I can hit Tab to have a window pop up and tell me, but I liked that old feature built into the Window. Is there a way to change the setting back so that when I open a finder window I get a reading on how much hard disk space is being used by X file?Select Show Status Bar from the Finder's View menu. As far as space used by any one file that is listed under the Size column in the Finder when using List View.

I am running iTunes on an IBM compatible system running Windows XP with a relatively small hard disk (70gb). I have 4 kids with 4 IPOD Touches, multiple IPOD Nanos, etc. Their apps and album art are eating up the hard disk space. I changed the Media Folder through Edit, Prferences, Advances, iTunes Media Folder to an external hard disk. The new music downloads and purchases go there but the apps and other items do not. How do I get the apps and other iTunes software and downloads to go to the external hard disk
There is no built in function to make this happen.
Your options are:
Upgrade the existing hard drive.
Try creating a link for the app folder on the external drive... this may or may not work.
Realistically, a larger hard drive is a better solution, then use the external drive for keeping a backup of the ENTIRE iTunes folder and any other personal data on the system. -
I have a problem with iPad2, apple logo appears but iPad won't boot up, then logo disappears & iPad dies - probably caused due to insufficient hard disk space (foolishly loaded up too many apps) - any help/advice greatly appreciated

In PSE will I use more hard-disk space by using iPhoto plus Organizer for photos?
I have PSE 10 on my MAC. I normally download my photos onto iPhoto (and a while ago, onto Bridge CS3 which came with an earlier version of PSE) but more recently have become interested in using the PSE Organizer for my photo library. I have started to transfer/copy the photos from iPhoto but, having read various topics on organizing photos, am a little worried that by having the photos in 2/3 places on the MAC I will use much more hard-disk space. I know that the original files for iPhoto are in the 'Library' so that I just see thumbnails on iPhoto ( I may be wrong here?), but will the photos I now have on Organizer be working off those same 'Library' originals or am I doubling up on the space required to store these photos?
For information my iPhoto is v 9.5.1 and would seem not to like .dng files so won't load them (I am using the Adobe RAW to DNG 8.3 Converter at the moment mainly because I would have to upgrade to PSE12 to get the RAW plug-in to process my Lumix G-6 RAW files, which is fairly expensive and, even then, my iPhoto would still be the same version unless I upgraded that as well!).
I can load the RAW files onto iPhoto but when I then send them to PSE or iPhoto itself for editing they seem to be automatically converted to .jpg and do not have the usual RAW editing selection palette. However, the PSE Organizer seems happy to accept the .dng files (but not the RAW files) and when sent to PSE for editing I do get the RAW type palette, so it looks like storing my .dng files in Organizer is a good idea and, therfore, I might as well store other photos there as well rather than run two different organizers - I will leave the photos in Bridge as they are.
If you are talking about photos not in iphoto, this is correct. If you use "from iPhoto" you will get automatic duplicates of the originals in a new location. If you export them manually and use from files and folders, yes, the organizer just makes a thumbnail.
This paragraph made me think! I'm pretty sure that when I decided to transfer my photos from iPhoto into PSE Organizer I used "from iPhoto" as this seemed the easiest way. Does this mean that I have duplicated the file size of my iPhoto library and am therefore using much more hard-disc space than if I had used "from files and folders" (getting just thumbnails)? The transfer seems to have pulled in a lot of folders! If this is the case, is there any way to go back and do it again but "from files and folders" next time?!
This is all rather complicated it would seem (or I'm making it that way!) and I really appreciate your help. -
Why is my available hard disk space disappearing?
Hi,
Occasionally my hard disk space will start disappearing for no apparent (to me) reason. I'll have 15 gigs of available hard disk space that will disappear, and I'll get messages that I'm running out of disk space, interfering with what I'm doing.
After I restart my computer, it seems to reset, but I would like to stop it altogether (as, obviously, it's not always convenient to restart my computer in the middle of tasks.)
I tried Disk Utility, but it didn't find anything. Are there any other legit programs I should use to solve this and other general issues?
Or is it something I could fix myself (with only basic computer knowledge)?
Thanks!
