Hard Disk stuck !!! What can I do ?

I got a 60GB Black iPod on October 29th. Debated for 4 months whether to drop my loyal flash Rio 1gb and get an ipod. Flying to NY from Chicago the ipod starts making this funny loud noise, the wheel would not work, the song that was being played did not play, the battery power ran out in 20 minutes as the hard disk seemed to be stuck...not to mention the heat on the back of the ipod. Given that the wheel did not work I could not turn it off. I had to wait until it ran off battery. Once in NY I did recharge the ipod. It worked fine while I was there. Flying back from NY to Chicago .. the problem came up again. Worse than before ... the noise in the hard disk was even louder. The girl next to me even heard it and looked.
Has anyone experienced this? I really want to return this piece of hardware. I do not want it to be repaired with refurbished pieces. I paid over $400 for this just three weeks ago and now it just does not work. I am extremely careful with all my stuff. I never dropped it and I even bought a case for the 4th generation ipod just to protect it.
My expectations were so much higher. Very dissapointed
Any advice on how to proceed will be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

It would be nice to have more details about what happened than you have provided, but I gather that Disk Utility is currently reporting that your hard drive cannot be repaired. That happens if a drive is failing physically or if it becomes too badly corrupt. Sometimes the latter can happen following install of a new system. If the drive already has minor problems, writing tens of thousands of files to it can damage the data structures past the point of repair.
The question now is what to do about it. You could try repairing with DiskWarrior, which can often repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. However, since your data could also have been damaged, and no utility can fix that, it would be better to erase the hard drive and restore from a recent backup. Do you have backups?

    - Where is it located ?
    - What is it's name ?

  • I am not able to delete or write my files to my external hard disk drive what shall i do?

i am teja i brought a new mac book air here i am not able to write or delete the files that are present in a external hard disk drive what shall i do now to enable required permisions................plz reply me i am new to mac

I guess your external drive is Windows (NTFS) formattet.
By default you were only able to read from that drive, as Mac doesent support NTFS write.
If you want to have read/write access to a NTFS volume you have to use add-in tools like MacFuse or Paragon on your Mac.
Not having write or delete permissions on the external drive may also preventyou from changing existing files on that drive.
Right click on the drive in Finder and choose "Information" from the menu will give you more information about the reasons of your problem.

Lost bookmarks, cookies and history when I moved the Folder 'Users' from the C disk to D disk. What can I do to retrieve them intact?

    Hi voyant
I would put the Users folder back... moving it will cause a lot of issues with applications.
Instead you can just copy individual files/folders from C:\Users\your_username\Documents,Pictures,Music.... to your D drive to save space on C.

This is really difficult to the point of not really worth it.
Keep the old TM backups in archive.. and start afresh on the TC.
Time Machine has a different way of backing up on Network drives cf Local drives.
Pondini does have a method to do it... but I would not recommend it.

    Hi deenabro,
First try resetting your iPod by holding down the sleep and the home button at the same time until the silver apple appears (ignore the red slider bar if it appears). If that does not work, you may need a visit to the Genius bar.....

I can't remember how I got the current copy but I think I may have downloaded a monthly rental copy because the program is asking me to pay a subscription fee.  I was expecting to get a message to install my serial numbers.

You downloaded the trial version for the creative cloud. It doesn't work with a serial number. It is licensed differently. You will have to uninstall it and then download and install from here:

  • How do I set up a network hard disk so I can restart my MacBook from it?

I have a 2TB Freecom XS Network hard disk, and I want to be able to restart my MacBook from it with my current OS, Leopard 10.5.8, when I have upgraded the OS on the MacBook to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 [as a possible precursor to Mavericks or even Yosemite]. The problem is that the MacBook doesn't recognise the XS as a network disk: the XS has been assigned an IP number, and I can mount it as a server volume, and I have copied all the system folders/files onto it, but that is no use if the system doesn't recognise it as a network disk for a restart [I've tried]. The system/library/users/applications folders are in a Macintosh HD folder as on the MacBook, but this folder is inside a root folder named PUBLIC: could this be part of the problem? I thought I might be able to reinstal the OS on the network disk using the original system installation discs, but after restarting the MacBook as instructed, the network disk isn't recognised as a destination for installing the OS. I don't want to instal Snow Leopard on the MacBook before I'm sure I can reboot it with Leopard, using the network disk.

    Hi BDAqua.
Thank you for your reply. I don't know how much what I omitted to disclose in my original post might affect what you've told me, but I have a wireless network set up with a 500GB Time Capsule, to which a broadband router and another backup disk [1TB, daisy-chained to the TC] are connected. Given the difficulty I had initially, setting up the network [mainly because of my ineptitude where comms are concerned], I didn't want to risk connecting the Freecom drive to the TC, in case it changed the network settings [or worse, disrupt my internet access], and I haven't done it hitherto. I did try connecting the ethernet cable to the wireless router however, with neutral results: still possible to manually mount the drive as a server, and it shows in the Network folder in my MacBook's root folder.
Further to an email from Freecom's support department [effectively just a request for part number, proof of purchase, etc.], I followed their suggestion and tried connecting the drive to the MacBook using the USB 2 cable, and the drive showed up in the device section of the Finder window sidebar, but I would guess that this option wouldn't enable the drive to function as a boot drive either? Also, unless I'm mistaken, USB offers much slower data transfer speeds than Gigabit Ethernet? I'm hoping I've not dropped a monumental bollock, because I'm positive from my pre-purchase research that Gigabit Ethernet is faster than FireWire or USB2, which is why I chose this drive over cheaper USB drives [like the 1TB Western Digital drive daisy-chained to the TC]; or am I mistaken?
To get back to your answer though, I don't dispute what you say, because I'm sure I'm much less of an expert than you might be, but I would nevertheless like to be able to boot up from the Freecom drive, if a way to do that is possible, even if it means biting the bullet and connecting it to the Time Capsule [assuming that this will work: can you advise?], without needing to investigate and purchase additional kit. I've had a scan of the forum, and I've seen a few suggestions which mention cloning, but I don't know how this works: I presume I'd have to buy the appropriate app for that? Your answer seems to suggest installing the new OS onto an external drive [although, worryingly, you don't mention Ethernet as an option] using cloning, so I'd be grateful if you could explain that.
I just hope that my desire to save the cost of a newer Mac of some description, be it new or refurbished, but giving me the newest OS possible on the MacBook [Yosemite, I'm guessing], doesn't end up costing me something uncomfortably similar, cumulatively.
Any practical and reasonably-priced suggestions welcome and considered! Thanks again

  • Time Machine backup created on Mac with a large hard disk. What happens when restore to MacBook Air with small SSD drive?

What if a Time Machine backup was created on a Mac with a large hard disk, e.g. 500GB iMac - and I buy a new MacBook Air with a small SSD hard disk e.g 128GB. What happens when I need to use the larger Time Machine file to set up the new MacBook Air? What happens to all those files that can't fit on the smaller SSD drive?

It is not the HD size, but rather the size of the data it contains. If you right-click your 500GB drive and select "Get Info" you can see how much is actually being used.
Naturally if you are using more space than the new drive has, then you have to make some choices about what you want to keep and what you want to keep archived.
I don't know what options are available but you may simply have to do a manual restore of files you want, in groups.
