Hard disk suddenly "losing" gigabytes

Hello,
I posted this message on the Final Cut boards because I thought the problem might be related to that application, but now I'm thinking it might be a general Mac Pro issue, so I thought I'd post here, too. In any case, I apologize for the redundant posts but this problem has me vexed, to say the least.
I've been using FCP 5.1.4 to edit a feature film. When I've exported QuickTime movies (Final Cut Pro movies), I send them to a designated hard drive (Bay 2 of my MacPro). But during the last two exports, I've noticed that when I export to my scratch drive, roughly the same amount of data is suddenly used up on my main start-up drive (in Bay 1).
For instance, if I have a 20 GB movie to export to my designated scratch drive, I will suddenly "lose" about the same amount on my main hard disk, even though no movies or FCP settings are saved to that drive. It's quite frustrating, because I'm losing serious disk space with each export, and a search of the main hard disk doesn't turn up these "phantom" files. Simply put, I have no idea what's going on.
It's possible (and I'm going out on a limb here) that this issue is related to a system crash I had a few weeks ago based on the allegedly faulty ATI 2600 graphics cards. Since then, I have yet to repair my main HD because disk utility fails at repairing the disk (even from the disk), and Disk Warrior 4.1 is apparently not compatible yet with the early 2008 Mac Pros.
Anyhow, that might be neither here nor there, but I wanted to mention to give the issue some more context.
Thanks very much for your time,
-- Naveen

Nevermind. I just figured it out! It's definitely a FCP-related question. Sorry!

The finder window for an external USB hard disk suddenly started separating files by time (today, yesterday, etc.) and stopped allowing me to change column width, order, etc. Also the header bar shifted to flat white from gray.
All was normal until the icon for the disk stopped showing up on the desktop when I would plug it in. I rebooted the computer, and the disk icon now shows up but this new look to the finder window started as a result. The hard disk does not have this problem when I use it on another Mac running Snow leopard. Also, two other external hard disks that I use on this computer running lion 7.4 still have the normal header bars with columns that can be reordered, etc.
I have tried looking in preferences and other places but have not seen this discussed.

Well duh - I finally figured out that somehow in the View options for the hard drive, the "arrange by" option had been changed to "by date" from "none". Not sure how that happened, I had never used the "view options" menu tem before. Changing "arrange by" back to "none" gets the gray column headers and the collapsible folder icons back.

  • External Hard Disk SUDDENLY NOT RECOGNIZED!

The mac is suddenly no longer recognizing my external hard drive. I have called apple support, but the only solution they suggest is for me to bring it into an Apple store for a repair... Unfortunately I don-t have the time right now to go to an apple sotre, and I was wondering if any of you out there had a solution,
ISSUE: External Drive (Buffalo Ministation 1TB) no longer recognized by mac.
    INFORMATION/TESTS:
    - PRAM AND SMC rests were done, but this made no change.
    - Safe boot and login with another account didnt change anything
    - Disk doesnt appear on disk utility
    - Did another update of OS X 10.8.2
    - The external drive works fine on other macs and PCs so the external drive it self is fine.
    - All the USB ports are fully funcitional with other USB sticks and External hard drives.
    PROBLEM:
I believe and so does the apple care, that the computer is no longer supplying sufficient power to the external drive in order for it to run.
    Does anyone know a fix?
OR, is it possible that a hard disk, which has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 capabilities, suddenly stops working on USB 3.0 ports but continues working on a USB 2.0 port? I have no other USB3.0 ports in my hands in order to test the device!
    Thanx for your help!

  • Hard Disk Suddenly Full

My hard disk has suddenly filled up leaving less than 2 gb available - it was over 20gb on Friday.
I have used checked out my HD using WhatSize and there are no giant files that I can see. It lists my HD as using about 16.8gb in total.
I have read many of the previous topics and my problem would seem to be in the VM area - the activity monitor gives this at 5.7gb
My question is how do I do something about it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Dear Thomas,
Thank you for your reply again and yes the support of a cyber friend is much appreciated.
I thought i had included the screenshot but when I now look at my last post I see the address on my computer for the screenshot but not the image itself. I have tried it with this post also but I can not seem to include a tiff file. Is there something special I need to do to send a tiff image?
I did check the hard drive with WhatSize which gave me the results already posted.
I am the only user of the computer. I have displayed hidden files but could see nothing very large to account for the missing memory.
I am a little cautious of making a backup of the hard drive on my external drive in case something hidden would be transferred to that drive. I know that is unlikely to happen but I will keep searching a while longer before before reinstalling.
I am doing another WhatSize scan to see what comes up. If I get any different results I will post again.
Best wishes and thanks for the support,
    Denis

  • My hard disk suddenly filled up and I can't find the files

that are causing my hard disk to fill up. I was watching some videos that was on an external drive on my computer using vlc. I finished one movie (.avi file) and then tried to watch the second one in the series. However, the vlc application would not open it. I tried several times. I gave up and tried opening it with the quicktime player. Even though it opened, I got a message that my startup disk was full. That was strange because I am sure I had about 20GB as I was keeping a close eye on my hard disk capacity. I had recently deleted many video files and so I had a rough idea of how much hard disk I should have.
Anyway, I deleted some movie files to make space and then I checked my hard disk with Disk Inventory X.
When I did that, I found some strange files.
There are some temp files some of which are 1GB. The path is private/var/vm/tmp. One file is labeled a Quick Time player launcher document.
Another one is called "sleepimage". Format is HFS+. It is 4GB. It was modified recently (yesterday). Its path is private/var/vm/sleepimage.
I don't want to delete anything important by accident.
I just think this is strange and want to find these files but when I click "Open", it says I don't have permission and I have to locate them in Finder. However, when I type "sleepimage" in Finder, nothing comes up.
I really want to get rid of any files that take up a lot of space on my computer and that shouldn't be there. Do you think this is some kind of virus? And that's why my computer is filling up with some strange files. There are also many swapfile documents that are 1GB in size.

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

  • Primary hard disk suddenly vanished!

This morning I got a lot of pacman updates mostly for gnome 3.14. everything went fine and after the upgrades I did my usually day to day work. I also powered off the system few times during the day and everything was fine.
But in the afternoon, when I wanted to log back into my system (after it had been locked), it wouldn't work! So after a few attempts that log in didn't respond, I restarted the system. after the restart I noticed GRUB isn't working (complaining about not finding hd0) and after a few tests, it didn't go into GRUB either! After "verifying DMI pool data...", a curser just blinks and nothing happens!
So using the installation USB I booted into a shell and after running lsblk, to my supprize I saw that my boot hard disk is not being detected at all! I also checked the BIOS menu and it isn't detected there either! I even opened my case and checked all the connections, they are all firm.
Does this mean my hard disk has stopped working!?!? or might there be a software problem? it is only about 4.5 years I am using it! I would really appreciate any guidance on this issue.
    Thanks in advance

I changed the cables and the SATA ports to this drive with the others and only this hard drive seems to be having a problem, the others are detected in all permutations of cable and SATA ports.
I guess so. I have done a lot of heavy data analysis (read/writes) over these 4.5 years with this hard drive and I guess the GNOME 3.14 update was the last thing It could tolerate! Thanks...

  • 2 out of 3 hard disks suddenly not mounting on start up

I switch on my Mac on Saturday and got 3 errors for 2 of internal Hard Disks saying that they were "not recognized".
i have re-booted and tried all sorts of things but the Mac is not recoginsing them.
I haven't repaired the disks in disk utility becuase it won't let me, the buttons won't appear selectable when i try to, alos i am nervous about doing this as they both contain all of my data and music.
Does anyone know what the problem is, should i but some external casings for them and run them off of Fire Wire?
I have a G4 (mirrored doors) 1Gb memory, the start up disk is running fine.
    Please help.

Where can i find the "jumpers set to cable"? is it a switch?
On the back of the drive, next to the ATA interface port will be a block with five rows of two pins. That's the jumper block. The jumper settings for the drive are usually indicated on the drive label. The jumper itself is a small plastic block with a metal contact plate inside that bridges the pin pairs. Tweezers are recommended for changing the jumper's position.
You should see something like this:
    ______1 2 3 4 5
    (ATA | | o o o o o |
    CNX) | | o o o o o |
The jumper would be across one of the sets of numbered pins in my crude illustration.
a vent in my flat the was connected to the outside wall and was letting cold air in, and at night in the UK its getting pretty cold. the start up disk is fine but do you think this could have caused the directories to get damaged?
Not likely. Modern drives monitor themselves pretty well and would detect a low spin-rate caused by the drive being cold and compensate. It would have to be pretty darned cold in the room for the drives to begin suffering for it..

  • External Hard disks suddenly "Access locked"...

    Help!! :))
Whilst doing a Disk Utilities Permissions Repair on the system disk (Leopard)... After successful repair, all external disks are now locked and won't allow access.
Opening the INFO panel (Comand + I) for each disk simply reveals that the Read /Write privileges area is set to "custom".
Unlocking the Padlock using System Admin name and Password does not allow me to change the "custom" denomination back to "Read / Write".
    Any ideas please...?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Kieran
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You can not write to them because they a formatted windows NTFS.
    See > http://www.macworld.com/article/51972/2006/07/ww_drives.html
If you want to use an external disk with both PC's and Mac's, you will need to re-format it MS-DOS/FAT-32.
If you wish to use them with only the Mac's, you will need to Format then GUID partition/Mac OS X.
    See > http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
    *+Proceed with caution when re-formatting disks+:*
    1. Before re-formatting any drive you will need to backup the current data on it to a computer or another drive, because re-formatting will erase all the data on the drive.
    2. Fat-32 has a file size limit of 4GB and will not allow single file transfers greater than 3.7 or 3.8GB.
    3. You may not be able to change the format or write to many media players without special software.

One drive is now inaccessible due to sudden power failure while listening Music from that drive few days ago.
Now it shows "Data error (Cyclic redundancy check)".
I tried all the procedures provided here like

but no result :( (i mean all processes failed. They could not detect the drive).
Please help me to get those data, pictures and project files.

  • My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my Macbook Pro and disappeared from Disk Utility. It works on a PC.

My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my macbook pro and it disappeared from disk utility. I have tried making invisible files visible but nothing has worked and my hard drive shows up on a PC but not my Mac anymore.

What is the manufacturer of the external and how old is it? Does it have its own AC power supply or is it USB bus powered?

verify on another Mac if the same
WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.

  • Losing Hard Disk Space

Hi All. I'm seriously losing hard disk space on my Macbook Pro 17 and it's been doing this heavily since I installed Lion.
My laptop has a 160GB hard drive. Out of this, I can add up only 70GB of files. Add another 20GB of free disk space so that totals 90GB. What's happened to the remaining 50GB hard disk space? Are there invisible files being written that I need to look for? Please help as this is really frustrating. Even using WhatSize doesn't add up to all the hard drive space I should have.

    Naz Hussain wrote:
On mobile backups I only have 1.3MB. I use Time Machine but that goes to an external hard drive.
By default, Lion on notebook computers will also save backups to your local disk. If you have many large files that are changing, that could account for your space.
If any software is creating directories then I can't see it.
The curl and ffmpeg make me suspect that you have some torrent or peer-to-peer software. Such software would generate many large files that Time Machine's local snapshots would backup. It would also be likely to save such files in temporary directories that are hidden.

  • Window for my hard disk looks entirely different suddenly/icons gone!

When I usually open the icon on my desktop for my hard disk (the internal hard disk), on the left-hand side is usually the standard array of icons for pictures, movies, etc. etc. (and when I open other folder icons on my desktop, I still see those same items - nothing has changed there). But when I now open the icon of the internal hard disk, all of those usual items (and the whole look and feel of the window) has changed. The only icons on the left side are network, the hard disk icon itself, and the icon for my MobileMe "air" disk (I think it's called iDisk - whatever... you probably know what I'm talking about).
I can't figure out what happened?! I ran disk utility and it supposedly did repairs that were necessary on my system. I rebooted and restarted and even shut down entirely and then restarted again. I really miss that usual interface giving me all of those options so easily available. What's up here and how do I fix????!!

Select Preferences from the Finder's menu, click on the Sidebar tab. Be sure what you want displayed is checked.
