Hard disk turns on but nothing else

Hello, I'm a teacher running a lab full iMacs and I have one giving me problems. When I press the power button I can here the hard disk (or something inside) start running but nothing else happens; no start up tone, no display, nothing. So far I have tried putting the install disk in and holding "C" but this gave me zero response and now the disk won't eject. I have, if I am remembering the terms correct, tried reseting the the SMU and SMC and still got nowhere. Any help someone can give me would be greatly appreciated!
God bless!

  • My Sony Vaio Model PCG-61611L LED Green Light Turns on but nothing else happens

When I turn on my Sony Vaio Model PCG-61611L, the green LED light goes on, but nothing much happens. The laptop is from 2010 and is never abused, so I do not know what has happened. It just started doing this on occasions and now I can't turn it on at all. Any suggestions?

RESOLUTION, PROBLEM SOLVED!! Hopefully everyone that has been working on this problem for a number of years, found the answer.Thought the problem was the BIOS. Went to Sony's Website, entered the Model Number, and of course you have to have a ****** Jack Decoder Ring on to figure out your Model Number.  But once youmanuever through that hurdle, download the BIOS update for your specific Model Number Unit.  Follow the directions, it will install once you have downloaded. Basically Shut the System down after that,Wait the 60 seconds, turn on. My unit performed two Memory Tests, both check ok. Reboots to desktopLogin. Then for the Grand Finally, shut the system down once more.  And finally, with out doing any two or three finger salutes.. my PC boots up again like normal.

  • Turns on but nothing else

I inherited a Dual 1GHz mirrored drive door G4 and when I push the power button, it starts up but that's all. Nothing on the monitor. The fans do get rather loud after about 30 seconds. I tried booting from the installer CD by holding down the c key and nothing again. I don't get the startup chime either. I sure hope it's not the logic board. Anyone have any help for me?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Try to reseat your memory. Also try resetting the motherboard. If I remember correctly there is a small push button switch on the motherboard itself. I this doesn't work start while holding down the firmware load button. This may also help. Without even getting to the startup chime you probably can't get to open firmware. But if you can, try the following;
Start computer while holding down [Option][Apple][P]and [R]. When the command prompt comes up type "set-defaults" press return. It should respond with an "ok" next type "reset-all" This will restart the computer.
If these procedures don't work you may need to have your power supply tested. There are several status leds on the motherboard that can be used for diagnostics. If you have the manual for the computer these can reveal hardware issues.
    Hope this helps.

my Mac book will power up but the apple sign remains in the middle of the screen and a gear turning below it -nothing else happens -can you help?

A couple of things to try:
PRAM reset by holding down cmd-opt-p-r on restart. Hold down the keys until you hear the second startup tone.
If you have a wireless keyboard, wait until you hear the startup tone, then press the keys.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Boot into Safe Mode by holding down Shift key on restart. Same timing applies to wireless keyboard.
Safe Mode takes a while to boot. It will show a progress bar. It will boot to the login screen. Log in, then restart normally.

Boot into Recovery HD by holding down cmd-r. Same note for wireless keyboard.  Once booted, run Disk Utility and repair Macintosh HD (or whatever you have renamed it).

I have Ipod touch when I turn it on the apple appears but nothing else goes on help??

What happens if you try a hard reset?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
If its still stuck at the Apple logo, try connecting it to your iTunes library in recovery mode and restoring it.

Back up all data, then test after each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    1. Press the down-arrow key. (Credit to ASC member iNeight.)
    2. Quit and relaunch Safari. Force quit if necessary.
    3. Click in the first field to be filled, and then select
    Edit ▹ AutoFill Form
from the menu bar. You may have to reload the page in order to do this.
    4.  Select
    Contacts ▹ Preferences ▹ vCard
    and uncheck the box marked
    Enable private me card
    if it's checked.
    5. Select your card in Contacts. Then select
Card ▹ Make This My Card
    from the menu bar.
    6. In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ AutoFill ▹ AutoFill web forms: Using info from my Contacts card
If the box was already checked, uncheck it and then check it again.
    7. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
    Select

  • I can print a test page from my Mac to my HP Officejet Pro 8600 but nothing else will print

Hi - I just recently had a hard drive crash and had to revert to an old Time Machine backup on my new hard drive to get my Mac back.  Since getting back up and running I have been unable to get my Officejet Pro 8600 back online.  My computer is wired to the wireless router but the printer is running wireless.  My computer can see the printer just fine and I can even print a "Print Quality Diagnostic" report from my Mac to the printer from the HP utility.  But nothing else will print.  The firmware is up to date.  I have tried resetting the printing system multiple times, rebooting the machine, etc... Nothing works.  Any help would be appreciated.
If it helps, we were using a different printer the last time the time machine was backed up, so when we used that backup the old printer was showing, but I reset the printing system, so it shouldn't matter.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hello @Ryan221,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see your hard drive recently crashed and now you are not longer able to print to your HP Officejet Pro 8600. I see you have reset the printing system with no success. Let's try a different approach:
    Scrub/ Uninstall
    • Open the Applications folder > HP or Hewlett Packard folder > HP Uninstaller
    • Click continue, click on one of the printers in the list.
    • * Only do this step if you do not have any other HP Printers. Hold down Control, Option and Command, While holding the three buttons down,
    • Click uninstall.
    Reset Printing System
    1. Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click System Preferences.
    2. In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan  dialog box opens.
    3. Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
    4. Click OK to confirm the reset.
    5. Type the correct Name and Password.
    6. Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol..
    Repair Disk Permissions
1.On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.
    2.Double-click Disk Utility.
3.Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
4.Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
5.Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.
Restart the printer. Now you can download and install the printer software and install it. Click on the link below to begin the download and follow the on screen instructions:
HP Officejet Pro Full Feature Software and Driver - Mac OS X 10.6, OS X 10.7, OS X 10.8
I hope this helps, please let me know the outcome!

  • 2009 Core 2 Duo iMac Display not turning on, but everything else is.

The iMac turns on, but NOTHING is on the screen. The machine boots fine, and can even connect to an external display. Help?

That is a tough problem since you don't seem to be able to boot from anything, hard drive, install disks, external. Sounds a lot like a failure on the logic board. And goes to the AirPort card twice before failing. Are you able to take the iMac to an Apple Retail Store genius bar or an Apple authorized repair service? This would be a good problem for their diagnostics.

  • Computer turns on but nothing appears on the screen

    Hi,
I have had this desktop computer for about 2 years. I usually use it almost daily and turn it off at the end of the day. Every few months or so the computer would turn on but nothing would appear on the screen. I would have to hold the power button to turn it off then turn in on a couple times or wait until the next day and the computer would turn on and everything would appear on the screen and work perfectly. Last week, the computer once again turned on but nothing appeared on the screen, except this time, after a week, the computer will now turn on except there is still nothing appearing on the screen. I no longer hear the fans running, however, I hear everything else running as normal. I have unplugged and re-plugged in all the cords multiple times and still, nothing.
    Please help! Thank you.
