Hard Disk Warranty Help

Hi,
I have a two year old 12" powerbook 1.33 Ghz whose hard drive recently suffered a stroke or something. After a couple months of acting up, I received a warning from SMARTreporter (handy little program) that the disk was on the verge of failing. I backed everything up, and continued to use the machine for a couple weeks when it finally gave out.
My laptop is out of warranty but I read on these forums that sometimes the hard disk has a separate warranty. The model in my computer is a Toshiba MK6025GAS, rev. KA201B. When I e-mailed the Toshiba support they told me that it is still covered until 2007 and that I need to create some kind of RMA form on their website, or through fax.
My problem is that when I use the site, it won't accept the part number MK6025GAS. It says I need to enter a part or model no. beginning with HDD and around 12 digits long, but "HDDMK6025GAS" hasn't worked either.
Before I resort to the fax method (I don't have a fax so that could be interesting.), I was hoping someone here might have experience with Toshiba. If anyone knows what the part no is, or how to correctly retrieve an RMA online, I would apprecite the help.
Thanks!
Pei

If your HD comes with the original unit which has Apple logo on it, toshiba or any manufacturer will not cover your manufacturer warranty instead they will tell you to deal with Apple and because you apple unit warranty is expired then your HD warranty is most likely is also expired. That's why if you have applecare then the warranty of your hd is still valid because you will deal with apple and Apple will deal with the manufacturer.
I've tried to get the manufacturer of HD (toshiba or fujitsu) without any success and both of them tell me to deal with Apple.
Most of OEM part you will have to deal with the place you purchase the part, there is always exception to the rule.

• Cant write/edit data on my external hard disk! Help please!~~

Okay guys, currently, i'm using Tiger version 10.4.11. My problem is that i cant edit data or write data to any external hard disks, like the maxtor One Touch and so on. Only thing i can do is to extract the data from the disks. I have tried to write on multiple hard disks but in all my attempts i have failed. i've tried to edit my network settings, but no results.
So, i seek help from anyone out here!

Hello, yea.. thanks man =)
Basically, its a shared hard disk between my macbook and a windows PC. So i kinda use the PC to write all my backups and data on the hard disk.
I have quite a few hard disk and they all have the same issue. It says 'The item 'file x'cannot be moved because 'my hard disk' cannot be modified.'I've used the software provided from the hard disk manufacturer, Maxtor/Seagate, to reformat the brand new portable hard disk which i bought yesterday.
Its connected via USB, same as all the other ones i have.
eh. the get info for it says

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
I tried to safe boot, but the computer just won't start. It starts for a few minutes ( I suppose it checking the system) and then restart again ( and if you hold the magic button fro safe boot it will restart and restart and restart).
I tried to write some unix command ( I can remember which ones- but there are for the sort of deep repairing, but they do nothing at all.

Have you have checked the files suggested in The hatter's link?
Sorry, losing the thread a bit between all these different posts and problems. I can only suggest going back to basics:
Back-up your data if possible - if you haven't already.
Reset the PMU
Disconnect all non-essential peripherals leaving just display, keyboard and mouse; unplug from the mains and leave for at least 30 mins; re-connect mains plug to G5(to earth the casing), then reset the PMU
http://macosg.com/group/viewtopic.php?t=5819&highlight=resetting+pmu
Note static precautions and the warning to press the button once only.
Then boot from the system DVD and run the Apple Hardware Test.
Then, while booted from the system DVD, run Disk Utility on your internal boot drive and try to repair it. Some further notes here

If it still finds unrepairable errors you will probably have to Erase & Install

Then use the combo updater

Re-install applications and restore user data.

• T43 ThinkPad -- crashed Hard disk -- need help!

Hello all members:
I am a brand new member here.
I have a T43 ThinkPad.  A few days ago, I got a blue screen on its monitor with a message that "Operating System" can not be found".  It seemed a failed hard disk kind of the problem.  Howvever, I attempted to re-install Windows XP, but aftere a few preliminary steps, I got the the message that "hard disk can not be found on this computer".
I have now taken the hard disk out.  It is Fujistu 80GB, Model : MHV 2080AH - Part No: CA06531-B20400DL.
I request your expert help as to which hard disk will be good for my T43.  Should I buy the same brand?  Is there any other better option?  Any place where I can get a fairly priced one?
Your replies will be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Aidee

Well, let's reverse the idea: try installing that failed hard drive in another laptop-hopefully one of your friends will have a machine that takes PATA drives-and check whether the BIOS of that machine "sees" the drive.
The reason for my suspicion is the fact that T43/p units tend to suffer from failing Southbridge chip and one of the first signs of that failure is a non-recognition of the hard drive...
Good luck.

• Having startup prob. on my compaq laptop, failed start. up test with hard disk failure help?

I have a  compaq presario, CQ70-120US , with windows vista
I haven't made any changes to it,  I took it to my mothers over the holidays and it was working fine.  Like an idiot, i was impatient during a shut down and did a hard kill cause wanted to turn back on to do something else.  After the hard kill i turned back on and it went to black screen ,  then a blue screen with curser, then eventually gave an error box saying Loadkey failed 999.
so after trying the hitting f10 at startup and doing hard disk test (which failed)
memory test passed
then did f8 to start in safe mode and that ran almost all day with no success
last thing i tried was hitting f2 at startup and running the start up test,   again memory test passed, then i get this
" startup test failed
hard disk 1 quick  (303)
so not sure what to do at this point.   i have no recovery disks but if need be i will order them, but wanted to know if this was fixable without doing that before i go that route.
This computer was given to me and within one week i messed it up.   go figure
Please help if you can, thanks in advance to anyone who tries to help
Katie

Hi,
Please try last resource, do a HDD self test:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Keep tapping the F10 key when the HP logo appears. This will take you to Bios Setup Utility.
3. Select the Diagnostic tab.
4. Select the "hard drive self test" option and press enter to perform the test.
Note: This test takes at least 40 minutes.
Pass - The hard drive is not damaged.
Fail - the hard drive is damaged and may need to be replaced.
Regards.

• Invalid node structure error when verifying hard disk, please help

My 27" Mid 2011 iMac is having hard disk issues. I attempted to repair the disk but received an error that said the disk cannot be repaired and needs to be re-formatted. I have all my files backed up to an external hard drive so I erased and formatted the disk. After reformatting, I ran the verify disk function and got the message saying the HD appears to working properly. I reload OSX Lion and within a day, my computer freezes up and acts as if something is wrong. When I run the verify disk, I get the Invalid Node Structure error multiple times and then the message saying the disk cannot be repaired and I need to reformat the drive. I have completed this process several times and have had no luck. I have looked at a few forums with people who have had somewhat similar problems but am still unsure. I have seen people recommend programs like Disk Warrior to repair issues the hard disk utility cannot but I don't want to spend $100 dollars on this program if my hard disk is damaged and needs to be replaced. Any suggestions? Thank you

• Hard Disk Repair Help!

Good evening,
Just wondering if you guys can give me any help with regards to my Mid 2010 Mac Mini running Mountain Lion.
I only use the computer for internet browsing and iTunes, I've upgraded the RAM to 8GB myself which was straight forward.
Yesterday I get home from work and the Mac is turned off (I usually leave it on Stand-By). Upon turning it on by the button on the back I get the Apple Logo and the rotating circle, followed by this screen;

If I click on Disk Utility I've got these options on the left;

I've a 160GB external hard drive which has stuff on it now but could transfer that stuff over to a very old and slow laptop if I need the extra space for backing up.
Verify Disk on the top drive gives me this, which looks fine?;

But Disk Repair on the greyed out drive gives me this;

Which doesn't sound good?
The bad bit.. I've not backed up anything since I got the computer, I've got pictures/music on my computer I'd like to keep if possible.. But I don't know anything about backing things up, or how I'd go about it. Sounds pretty terminal from that pop-up message from Apple!
I've got installation disks if I need them.
So you helpful people - What do I need to do first?
Thanks in advance!
(Apologies about the bad pictures, thought it'd be better than nothing though!)

Thanks so far, Viking.
Tried to do the Shift or S key on boot up after/on the chime but nothing.
Will try a wired keyboard tomorrow, will any USB keyboard work to you know? Can borrow one from work if so..
EDIT;
I appear to have got it into Single User Mode. Tried the fsck command, this is what I got back from that;

Still started up in Disk Utility..
If I try and install Lion again I get this;

After finishing, the PowerBook won't start. I can not hear any noise form HD, or SuperDrive, no startup chim sound.
I disasembly and assembly again the PB and nothing. I try to reset PRAM SHIFT CTRL ALT POWER and nothing.

I would make sure the keyboard ribbon is squarely seeded and in the right position. That clip is extremely tiny and fragile. Any damage to it whatsoever could cause major issues. Did it fracture at all during the installation process?

• Formatted Mac Os X accidently. Now wont boot from disk or hard disk. Help!

Hello,
Last weekend I managed to stupidly and accidently wipe my mac os x part of the HD when it was meant to be for the partition I had freshly made for boot camp. Since the mac os x part of the HDD was formatted as NTFS, I now cannot boot to that and have been trying to get on to disk utility to sort this mess out... by booting to disk... problem is... it wont.
Long story short.
After insertng the Mac Os X Tiger install disk and holding C it does not force boot the disk and all I see is a grey folder icon with a question mark which flashes several then vanishes... I've tried inserting the disk and holding the Option key, and C... and also tried tapping both option keys fast to no avail... the cursor appears however when I do both and it then freezes and the screen stays white.
Tried phoning Apple tech UK to discover i'm out of applecare cover and it'll cost me £35 to get incident cover for this incident. She then said at the end,.... you just need to get to disk utility and sort it from ther... problem is.... I cant get there.
Apologies for the mini-rant... I've just tried every solution and I'm still at square1.
Thanks in advance..

+Any other suggestions?+
You didn't mention whether or not it still sounds the start-up chime when you try to boot.
Also, will it boot to the Apple Hardware Test (located on one of the grey-labeled original system discs) - hold down the d key instead of c key. Has it ever run the AHT prior to this problem?
Were you successful at performing a PRAM reset? Only this will cure the iMac of its propensity to search for the old startup disk. Had you ever done one prior to this problem? If you can do that and then immediately switch to holding the c or d key, it must force a boot. Since all you need is for it to boot, you should have no external device connected to your iMac.

• Large Movie Collection Needs to be Relocated to Hard Disk - Please Help?

Hi, I use iTunes primarily for movies both home video and commercial movies that I watch on either an iPod Classic or iPod Touch. I have about 100GB of movies which I made significant edits and have added DVD cover Art. I do not want to lose any of this work but I also cannot see myself burning all this to DVD.
If I go to the directory where the movies are located, only the movie is there with the original file name. None of the added DVD cover art or the changed titles are present. These changes must be located in tag info somewhere else in iTunes (I think). I am afraid I will lose all my hard work.
Is there a way to move everything to an external hard drive from within iTunes? Or is there a third party application that can do this for me? I have "Googled" this but I have only found apps for copying movies off the iPod.
Any advice would be much, much appreciated!
Warm regards,
Roestuff

Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447
If you are just testing, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location.
Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

Hi
If you did not purchase additional international warranty, the notebooks hardware problems can be fixed only in the country where the notebook has been purchased.
But as far as I know the parts like HDD or memory are user upgradable.
Maybe you dont need to send the notebook to UAE for a fix but maybe the guys would be able to send you an HDD under warranty conditions.
