Hard Drive about to Kill Itself?  Help!

I think my HD is about to go on my Mac Pro...here's the story...suggestions welcome!
I have a 10/2007 Mac Pro. I have four HDs inside:
Bay 1: Boot Drive
Bays 2/3: Raid Drive for all data (photos, music, documents, movies)
Bay 4: Partitioned drive ... one side is the Windows partition and one is used to periodically back up the boot drive using Super Duper. This partition is made bootable.
I also have two external drives: one backs up the RAID data drive daily, and one is a Time Machine drive (I also keep a portable drive at the office that I bring home once a week to back up the RAID data drive to keep off site).
On Thursday evening, I had trouble opening iPhoto and Aperture. Very strange. I repaired permissions, to no avail. When I rebooted, the screen did not receive a signal. After a few attempts at unplugging/replugging the DVI, the screen came on (I tested another monitor today with a different DVI cable, so it's not the monitor or cable).
I did a SuperDuper backup of my boot drive out of concern. After nearly two hours, it failed (I sent the report to the company). Before it failed, it was incredibly slow...peaking at 7.5 mb/s and dropping to less than 1! I turned Time Machine off during this process as well.
I just did a time machine backup ... after 45 minutes, it's only up to 1.9MB out of 2.3 MB!! Uh-oh.
Earlier, I tried to boot to the DVD of Mac OSX, but it would not; when I did reboot, I went into System Preferences and chose to boot from the DVD, which it did. I ran Disk Utility and it said the disk was fine. I decided to click "repair" anyway, but it said that it could not unmount the disk.
My thoughts (and I know very little)....the drive is about to go. I'm thinking of booting to the backup drive and running the machine for a bit. If that works, I could drop a new drive in Bay 1, format it properly, then SuperDuper the back-up boot drive (from which I booted) to the new drive, then boot from there.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance...

According to the crash report by Super Duper, the destination disk was bad. I took it out and everything seems fine. Perhaps just being on the bus it was reeking havoc. New drive goes in tomorrow....

My MacBook hard drive is full again. I have a 13in. Aluminum, Late 2008 MacBook, and about 18 months ago (in October 2013), I replaced the original hard drive with a Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive. However, my MacBook is now already saying that my hard drive is full again.  When I check "System Information," under "Storage," it states the following:  Audio 52.02 GB; Movies 33.68GB; Photos 43.13GB; Apps 14.76 GB; Backups 174.4 MB; and Other 96.39GB.
Also, at home, I have an Apple Time Capsule 4th Generation 2TB that I use as my wireless router, and I also use it for automatic backup via Time Machine.  And when I first purchased Time Capsule, the first time I connected Time Capsule, Time Machine asked if I would like to use it to back up my files, and I clicked, "Use as Backup Disk."  And that's really all I've ever done with Time Capsule.
In addition, I also have a LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 1TB external hard drive.  I have copied my MacBook's hard drive onto my LaCie external hard drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Obviously the Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps are taking up a lot of space... Any suggestions re: what I can do with Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps?  And what about the Other?  Other is taking up 96.39 GB. What is Other, and what can I do about it?
And what about partitioning my hard drive... Is that something I should do?  Should I partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently?  And should I partition, or configure, my external hard drive?  And if I need to partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently, how do I setup Time Machine to backup per any such changes?  Same thing for my external hard drive?

    Thank you for your help.

Partitioning makes no sense. You have a drawer full of stuff. Split it into two smaller drawers and you have two smaller drawers full of stuff.
Decide what you can store on external storage - your iPhoto/Aperture/Lightroom libraries can all be stored on externals, as can your iTunes Libraries and so on. Do you need to carry 30 gigs of movies with you all the time? You  can get portable drives the size of an iPhone these days.

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • Why does my hard drive keep dismounting...help please I am going bonkers...

    Brand new AEBS ver7 firmware
Works fine on the network and to the gateway for the internet.
Plug in a Lacie320 drive tot he USB, it sees it, it appears to work (but slow) for a while. Leave it to backup and when I return the disk has dismounted? Gone
Cant look at logs as I cannot reconnect without rebooting the router at which time the logs all are deleted.
If I try to reconnect it gives me an error connecting to Airport.
Only way out is to reboot AEBS.
If I try to delete files from the hard drive when connected it hangs, computer has timer going round forever message box is open but is not scanning files to delete, it is as if it can't see the drive and is searching...plus it has a small message box I cannot read (half off the screen), only way out of this is a physical reboot (hold power button down for 4 secs)
Now I have the drive on the USB direct to the machine, works great. So is this a firmware issue on the Airport unit?
Help please, I have spent days messing around with this and am about to give it up.

If you look in the iTunes folder on your original hard drive you should find a lot of files named "Temp File". These need to be deleted. I have not figured out what causes these or how to stop them from being made. If anyone knows the answer it would be greatly appreciated. When I delete mine it takes a very long time for them to delete, not the 2 minutes that countdown clock claims!

  • External hard drive won't install, Please Help

I just purchased this same external hard drive, 3/7/2011.  I hooked everything up via my USB, put in the installation CD, got the Drive Set-up window, clicked on Backup Software and got a message "C:\DOCUMEN~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\pft48F~tmp\" and "Access denied" with the only choice of clicking on "OK"; when I clicked on OK, a small window titled "unpacking backup software" appears in the upper left corner; it got about halfway through, stopped and I got an alert from my McAfee security program that it detected a trojan and removed it. Then 3 gauges appear in the upper left corner and the message "Toshiba Backup Software Installation an error occurred during the move data process of the file REFILERW.SYS!" appears and I click OK again then the Toshiba Drive Setup window appears and a green checkmark is NOT next to Backup Software. However, if I go ahead and click on the other 2 items to install, Drive Monitor Software and Power Save Software, a green checkmark appears next to them. When I then click Exit I get my regular startup screen. The Drive Monitor appears in My Programs but nothing else.  Did Toshiba send me a trojan on their program?
When I checked out my McAfee to see what the name of the trojan was,it says: Artemis!8CBE6FC5C432
I'm not a technophobe and am just lost; I don't know what to do or where to get answers. I emailed Toshiba Tech Support twice but didn't get anything back.
Please, can someone out there help me?

It would be a false positive.  Some antivirus programs look for virus like activity, and that makes them much more prone to errors.
Get rid of McAfee's and switch to Microsoft Security Essentials, it is free and very good.   Security essentials is a very light program, so you will not notice any slow downs when it is running like the bloatware security programs are known for and you will have far fewer false positives.

When I used to manage a PC repair shop, we used to have people come in and pay us to get rid of McAfee's and Nortons on their systems because they would slow the computers down so much, and the false positives were making them miserable when trying to install programs that they knew were safe.

  • Internal Hard Drive will not mount -- need help!

My Mac Dual 450 has been a constant problem since I installed Tiger several weeks ago. There have been crashes every day. Disk First Aid did not help. Then I discovered I had TechTool Deluxe which I had gotten from Apple a few months ago. It has diagnostics for just about everything you can think of. I tried it. Big mistake.
Everything came out OK except it said there were some bad blocks, and an invalid BTree node size 8.0 (whatever that is). I tried to get it to repair the HD and it said it could not, that the HD was not mounted (I had booted from TechTool disk). Then I tried to reboot from the internal HD and I got a big bad black box saying that I had to restart. I tried that many times and kept getting the message. I booted from the Apple Tiger install disk and tried to run Disk First Aid on my HD but it said there were problems and Disk First Aid could not correct them because the HD was not mounted. I tried this and the TechTools Disk many times. Same result.
I then booted from an external system 9.2.2 HD and tried to use the Disk First Aid on that. Same result: it said the Macintosh HD (my internal) was not mounted so Disk First Aid could not repair it.
I have tried everything I could think of (option-boot, C-boot, etc) and nothing will let me boot from the internal HD or even mount it. I spent quite a bit of time with AppleCare rep and he could not succeed in getting the HD to mount.
He suggested either trying Disc Warrior which I do not have, or possibly resetting the PMU on the logic board and he sent me instructions for that, which seem ominous to say the least. And I doubt that it would solve my problem since the computer sees the HD, it just can't mount it. Resetting the PMU seems to be for computers that can't see the HD and won't start. But mine does just fine with other start-up disks.
Are there any suggestions on what else I can try? Is there a program that can be downloaded that mounts hard drives?
My Mac Dual 450 has 1.25 gb of RAM.
Thanks for any help. I need it fast.

Thank you for your suggestions and your continuing interest in trying to solve my problem. I rebooted with CMD + S and got the black screen with white text. Unfortunately I could not type anything on it. I typed /sbin/fsck -y and hit return. Nothing showed on the screen. I waited awhile in case this was one of those situations where it is hidden. But nothing happened. I tried the whole sequence a couple more times and same thing: I was unable to type anything that would show up on the screen.
Am I missing something here? I tried typing holding down various keys and could not get anything to register.
For what it is worth, the last line that showed on the screen is "panic. We are hanging here..."
I do not think that is related to what I typed since it was there when the screen first appeared, but could it nonetheless have somethng to do with my computer or hard drive?
I am right now installing system X.4 onto an external HD. If I can get that to boot and work OK, I can just use that for awhile until I get the internal either replaced or repaired.
If you see my previous posts, I had a devil of a time installing system X.4 to begin with. Maybe my HD was troubled all this time??? Or could there be some other underlying problem with my Dual 450? I suppose I will find out when I try to boot from the external.
Incidentally, I have an external HD with 9.2.2 on it and have had no trouble booting from it or using it.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • ITunes + external hard drive + iPod movies = headache. Help?

    Hey folks,
I'm in need of some assistance. In theory, this should work just fine. But iTunes and I have a history and it's not cooperating again.
    Present setup:
-Macbook (with a hard drive that is almost full)
    -Music is saved on Macbook
    -All is well
What I want the setup to be:
-Brand new WD 500 GB External hard drive
-An iTunes folder has been created on the external drive
-All my music was copied from my laptop to the external drive into the iTunes folder
-iTunes was updated with the new location
-Everything is fine UNTIL I unplug the hard drive, at that point iTunes resets itself to the Macbook folder. When I plug the external drive back in I have to reset the preferences to that location again and it updates my iTunes library - which is a pain to say the least.
It gets slightly more complicated at this point ... I'm in the midst of moving roughly 60 movies onto my iPod. I have a folder on my external drive named "iPod Movies." I was able to transfer 27 movies onto my iPod just fine last night. Now, when I transferring movies into iTunes I get this error, "Attempting to copy to the disk "My Book" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
Basically, I want my external drive to be my iTunes/iPod drive and it certainly is not working that way. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

Set your folder structure on the ext HD to mimic what is on your Mac - iTunes>iTunes Music> etc - then make sure that the iTunes Library and .xml files for the library are on the ext HD. Then when opening iTunes hold down the 'Option' key and direct iTunes to the ext HD.

  • Crashed Hard Drive!!! Please Help!

Hi everyone, this is my first time on Mac Support, and I am in desperate need of help!
I have a black Macbook with OS 10.4.11 with the 80gig hard drive. Unfortunately the hard drive crashed and I did not back it up. Here's how it happened:
I bought a new hard drive to upgrade and installed it in the computer without installing an OS. The original hard drive I put in a SATA enclosure, and booted from that externally. While I was using the computer, the USB connection was interrupted by accidentally wiggling the cord at the connection point. The computer froze, and when I tried to reboot, the computer recognized the drive as the bootable drive, but could not boot, turned to a blue screen with the loading wheel just continuing forever, and then after about 5 minutes the computer would shut off. After taking it to my University tech center, they could not boot from it, or repair the disk. However, they got a few files off it, including mostly program files, but couldn't get any User files, which is what I desperately need and include hundreds of hours of music production that I moronically did not back-up.
When I ran Disk Utility to repair the disk, this is the message I got:
Verify and Repair disk “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid index key
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
So what do I do now? Is this a physical problem or an internal coding problem? Will DiskWarrior do anything for me? or should I pay the $1000 to have DriveSavers recover my files?...hopefully not!
Any help with this would be great!'
    Thanks,
    Alden

I can not say for sure that DiskWarrior can fix it....but that is exactly the kind of problem it was made for.....
You might run Apple's Disk Utility several times....I have seen Disk Utility slowly repair a drive... a little at a time....fixing a few more errors each time it is run....
Only you know what your data was worth too you....I hope something works for you....

  • Introduce new hard drive- get connected to web HELP!!??

    Hello Masters of Cyberspace;
I crawl before you begging for help again- In August I had another hard drive replaced- and this time the cable to connect same too (was it THAT all this time? Who knows) Anyway, I got home.... at first, the problem was that the software was not updated as far as I had been before the break down- meaning the computer was months behind the extreme base station (which could do WPA2, while computer could only do wpa, if as I recall).
So, meanwhile, I had difficulty just switching the ethernet cable to computer and connecting too- It did not work to just enter in the data I had copied when I first got on to DSL....
I had called sprint that night finally, and he had me make changes to the terminal (darwin bash, whatever it is called), but he helped only for the ethernet wire to computer: he said that for the airport, I need apple help for the settings for airport....
A couple of times I have tried, but it is really hard to have an hour I can sit about waiting on the phone...
Finally (cue music) the question: Who Knows what I need to change to get the settings right?

HEY ALL: I am happy to report I got the help I needed by phone (and a wee from me too actually- somehow...) and if you can read this, it came through my airport extremem base station...Yehaaa!!
I accept improvements in tiny increments too!! Peace,C

  • Ibook won't boot, won't recognise hard drive, PRAM reset etc. Help?

Hi, I'm trying to repair my brother's iBook with limited knowledge. I'm not sure whether it's a G3 or G4 but it was made in 2001, has 2 usb's and a firewire, is white (slightly translucent) and has a 12" screen.
It started having problems starting up so he copied all his important files, just in time as now it won't work at all.
It starts up but just comes up with the ?/folder icon flashing. The hard drive starts "ticking" like an old clock as soon as the power button is pressed, as if it's stuck.
I've tried starting from the 10.3 install CD, this works at first but can't see a hard drive for installation, the same goes for disk utility from the install disk, there's no disk shown to repair.
I've reset the PRAM, PMU and pressed command, ctrl, alt(or shift?) and the power button.
I've started in "safe" mode but it won't get past the grey screen with apple icon.
I've started with alt pressed, this showed an OSX hard drive startup disk ok but would not boot it, it showed the grey screen again with the Apple logo, on one occasion this changed to a "No Entry" sign, a circle with a line through, weird. It has OS9 on here too but that didn't show at all.
After I drove it from his house (100 miles of vibrations) it started up straight away but froze (again with the ticking sound) after about 10 mins when accessing a file. When it started I had to reset the year and time which had changed to 1976, this is why I reset the PRAM. Is there a PRAM battery on these machines that can be changed? Could that be the problem?
On one occasion I held the eject key down at startup after having problems getting it out, the screen showed lots of numbers and something saying "panic: we are hanging here" very weird!
I've pressed down on the case on the left below the keyboard.
The battery seems to hold plenty of charge.
Sorry this is so long but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. I've tried everything I can think of & have read about without spending cash or taking it apart. I think the HD may have had it. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    James

    James,
No need to apologize for the length. That helps a lot. You can tell the model, speed and size by lifting the keyboard (two tabs outboard of the F1 and F11 keys, make sure it's unlocked - that tiny sloted head between F5 and F6)
There'll be a bar coded sticker there.
    However I think it's a 500-900 G3.
It starts up but just comes up with the ?/folder icon flashing. The hard drive starts "ticking" like an old clock ..
That's classic for a bad hard drive.
When it started I had to reset the year and time which had changed to 1976, this is why I reset the PRAM.
That happens when the battery is out with no power plug for longer than a few minutes.
Is there a PRAM battery on these machines that can be changed? Could that be the problem?
No there is no PRAM battery in an iBook. There is a super cap that allows a short time so you can change the battery.
the screen showed lots of numbers and something saying "panic: we are hanging here" very weird!
    Yes that's a kernel panic.
So it boots from the CD but needs a new hard drive.

  • My hard drive has mysteriously renamed itself

The hard drive item that sits permanently on my desktop has been renamed to 'pe. I noticed this yesterday evening, after I'd downloaded some software updates and tried to back up my files using Time Machine.
An image file that was saved on my desktop has also changed its name, from "Peter and Laura caricature" to "-09§". However, the name of a movie file saved on my desktop has remained the same, so whatever has caused these file names to change hasn't affected everything on my desktop (I only had three items there - the hard drive, the image and the movie).
Is this something I need to be concerned about? Does it signal some sort of corruption or virus? No-one else uses my machine.
I'd be very grateful if anyone out there could help me with this.
    Best regards
    Daniel

    Hello db:
I am not going to turn this into a discussion about AV software. However, it is, IMHO, a complete waste of money and system resources to install AV software on a Mac running OS X. If one uses "reasonable" intelligence about downloads, there is minimal/no risk.
I wonder why a business would permit downloading music..... must be a very different business from ones I managed IT for in my previous life.

  • Newly installed Ultra ATA hard drive not showing up anywhere-HELP!

Just installed (I thought) a 300 GB hard drive on top of my factory installed 40GB. Tried it once as the master and then as the slave. Still, it doesn't show up in disk utility so I can format it. I do not have it set for cable select.
Any help would be appreciated because I couldn't find a similar question in the past posts. Thank you!! ")

I thought it was a Sony but apparently only my CD drive is - I can't tell if it is a WD! Here's are the specs on it... Does that model # tell you anything about it?
    ST340016A:
    Capacity: 38.18 GB
    Model: ST340016A
    Revision: 5.21
    Serial Number: 3HS5SPFX
    Removable Media: No
    Detachable Drive: No
    BSD Name: disk0
    Protocol: ATA
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    OS9 Drivers: Yes
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified
Also, the instructions I have don't tell me how to set up the old HD as master w/slave present. Currently, I have no jumper in the new HD and the old HD has a jumper in the master/single drive spot.
The instructions are more geared to a Windows PC of course. In the troubleshooting section is does talk about having to put a (capacity limiting) jumper on the pins all the way to the right for computers that do not suport high-capacity drives.
Now that I've had some sleep I'm going to get back down there and see if I can't refigure my connector situation.
BTW-yes, I figured out too late that I would not be able to use all of the GB on this drive. This is a learning process for me as I'm a busy mom of 3 boys-I generally figure things out in my "spare" time. Ha, ha! I so love .Mac and the support-what a lifesaver!
I HAD been wondering how difficult it would be to install the controller card. Is that something I can do down the road assuming I actually get my new HD showing up?
    Thanks!

  • Itunes vs. external hard drive..PLEASE..PLEASE help!!!! Sorry so long....

I have over 9,000 music files in my itunes library. I hooked up an external hard drive to free up memory on my computer. I set up itunes to change the path of downloads to the new external hard drive. It worked fine until my husband forgot to turn on the external drive (many times)and when he was downloading purchased music it was going back onto the computer drive since the external wasn't turned on. SO....when you go to itunes there are exclaimation marks next to some songs (because their on the external drive. I read some of the discussions on this site and so I ran a script to clean up the "ghosts" links. After that was completed I was left with all my songs in my library DUPLICATED! that is over 18,000 files!!!! After I sorted to "show duplicate songs" I painfully sat for HOURS deleting one by one the duplicate songs!!!! I'm no where close to being finished sooooooooooooo my question is:
Is there ANY Other way to do this? What would happen if I deleted the entire library and then tried to reload the songs pulling from my external hard drive folder? Would that work or would I delete everything? Would I lose all my playlists and recently purchased/recently played lists?
I would appreciate anyone's assistance with this, I'm just so frustrated with this itunes drama!
Thank you so much in advance!!!!

how do I absolutely know if all the music files are saved on my external hard drive? Or do we even need the external if I just download from the ipod itself?
You will be saving all non purchased music to the external during this process. Afterwards all purchased AND music imported by iTUnes will be on the C drive (Internal drive). Your iPOd is not ment to be a back nor will it nativly put songs onto the PC. So in short if your short on space on the PC you need the external or a bigger Internal drive.
how do we make a copy of the playlists I currently have or are those gone forever when we do this?
This is something that has to be made very clear. You can make a text list of all songs in a REGULAR playlist so after this you can manually rebuild it. iTUnes has what they call "Smart PLaylist". By Default when you first install itunes you have smartplaylist named "Recently PLay" "Recently Added" "Top 25" just to name afew. These you don't have to worry about. Smart playlist you have created you have to write down or remeber there "Rules". If you have no idea how to make a smart playlist its mostly safe to say you havn't made any.
As for setting up the itunes purchased music to download to my C drive is that done through the default preferences?
    Short answer, yes
Can you burn CD's even if the external isn't on?
If the playlist contains songs stored on the external, then no it will have to be on for it to burn to CD. You might be better off just leaving the external on all the time and only turning it off when the PC is off......then again if you did that and turned the PC on, you might forget to turn the external on too

  • Disk Utility and Disk Warrior error on internal hard drive....PLEASE HELP!!

After running idefrag on my internal Western Digital 120gig hard drive. The drive did not appear after I rebooted my mac. I opened Disk Utility and the drive is there but grayed out. I used "repair disk" under First Aid and it gave me this error:
Verify and Repair disk “HD 120”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Then I tried using Disk Warrior 3.0 to rebuild and it gave me this error:
error ""WD 120 GB" cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged. The disk was not modified (2155, 2179)".
I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this, but I need help as most of my important data is on this hard drive. What else can I do?
    I am on a g4 quicksilver with 10.4.3 installed.

Sorry to hear about your problem but unless you are working with very large files such as with video editing, etc., using a defrag utility is not required with OS X and no defrag utility should be used on a hard drive without a backup first.
The current Disk Warrior version for Tiger is 3.0.3 and if Disk Warrior cannot repair the drive/directory, it must be in bad shape which was caused by using idefrag.
You can try using a data recovery utility such as Data Rescue (Prosoft Engineering) which includes a free trial version.

  • Hard drive 2009 13inch MacBook Pro HELP!

My internal hard drive recently died on me and I'm new to everything about hard drives. To replace my old hard drive, I purchased a Seagate Momentus Laptop 320GB 5400RPM 8MB Cache. Is this the right one to buy for basic usage?
Also, when I turn on my computer, there is a flashing folder with a question mark in it, this happened initially when my hard drive died. Is this happening because I need to install the installation CDs?
Please, any help would be great!

When you get into Disk Utility, you should click on 'Erase' in the menu bar, and you should get a display such as this (but with your HDD in the left hand column):
Note where it says 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Make certain that you have selected that option.  Click on the 'Erase' field in the lower right hand portion of the display to commence the formatting.  When that is complete, continue the installation.
    Ciao.
