Hard drive accidentally deleted

Hi All, happy new year! Just a couple Q's for ya... I had a "few" songs downloaded&saved to my HD, but my genius girlfriend wanted to "speed up the laptop"&since they were already on my nano. She DELETED all of my songs. Luckily thru you guys, I changed it so it didnt auto update, saving what was on. But now what? Do I need to copy/paste the library list&re-download them all? Then reset&reload the nano? It was more like a LOT of songs! Thx for any help!
D.

Ther are some third party apps which will allow you to copy music from your iPod, but it isn't a procedure supported by Apple.
If you can use your computer to 'see' invisible files then all of your iPod music will be available through your windows explorer, but in folders which are numbered rather than named, and not easily browsed through.
I'd be surprised if you could connect to iTunes and simply drag the list from your iPod back in to your iTunes library without a third party app - I would think you'll need to google on this one.

  • My external hard drive accidentally switched off during Disk Utility's "erase free space" process.  I restarted the external hard drive and Disk Utility, but now I get the "couldn't mount disk" error when trying to finish the erase.  Please help!

My external Lacie Quadra hard drive accidentally switched off in the middle of "erase free space", and when I switched it back on Disk Utility was hanging.  So I Force Quit Disk Utility and restarted it.  Now when I try to erase I get
"Secure Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t unmount disk."
But "erase free space" seems to work...
What can I do?  I'm erasing as I'm giving the drive to someone else and I wanted to wipe it clean.
Also should I use "erase" or "erase free space" if I want to wipe the drive clean?
    Please help!

Sorry I don't really understand.... there are no partitions on the drive.  How do I repartition it?
And should I use "erasing free space" or "erase" for wiping clean my drive of everything?  Erase seems to be faster last tiem I tried.
    Thanks!

There is no way to export Faces information.
I'm not sure why you would do this:
If I copy a folder from iPhoto on to a hard drive, then delete it from iphoto then import it again,
If space is an issue then move the whole Library to an external drive:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I have been using an external hard drive on a PC, I have now moved over to a macbookpro, is there a way to reformat the hard drive without deleting the files currently on the hard drive?

if it's fat32 then the mac can read it without problems
if it's ntfs then you can install programs which make it possible to write to it too otherwise it's read only

  • 2nd hard drive accidentally got deleted.

Hello Everybody: Here is my problem My dad gave my Grandmother his old Compaq Presaro CQ56 . Running Windows 7. Any ho I reset the computer to factory defaults . But I was trying to delete my dad's old info on the 2nd hard drive. Some how when doing this I accidentally deleted the hard drive driver it self. Her is what I tried so far, Restarting computer. System restore Pressing esc at start up and running the hard drive test. I tried a 3rd party program called Ease us Partition recovery that one website said might fix it. Would not let me press the processed button. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for spelling and grammar issues. I have a learning disability. Thanks again Jenmoon1

It may have died then. It could have been on the edge and the stress of recovery finished it. You could try reseating it to insure it has a good connection but most likely it will need to be replaced.

  • How do I keep a file on my external hard drive and delete it from my internal hard drive?

I have a iMac with 1 TB internal hard drive, connected to it is a 3 TB Seagate external hard drive using Time Machine to back up my computer.
I use this computer for making family movies with videos and pictures. My 1 TB internal hard drive is now almost full with only 200 GBs of storage left on it. My external drive has 1.62 TBs of space left on it. I would like to delete a lot of the videos on my internal hard drive and keep them only on the external hard drive. I've tried this and it tells me I cannot do it because it is part of the Time Machine back up. Why can't I manage my computer files as I would like??
Also once you import pictures into Aperture or videos into iMovie, good luck having access to the initial files you imported. It seems once these programs get hold of your files they aren't accessible to you any more. I don't understand that! Anyway can anyone help me get the files I want off my iMac and onto my external Seagate hard drive?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How do you resize existing partitions on an external hard-drive without deleting their contents?

Hi, I've got an external hard drive (1 GB Western digital) Which I bought with a view to both storage and time-machine functions.
Initially, I partitioned the hard drive such that I had 750 GB for the time-machine segment, and 250 GB for the storage segment.
Now that my storage is approaching the 250 GB limit, and my time machine is only taking up 80 of the alloted 750 GB, I want to transfer some of that space across so that I'll have more room for storage.
When attempting this on disk utility, I can reduce the size of the time machine partition, but I am unable to increase the size of the storage partition.
Can someone please advise what I should do to sort this out without deleting the contents of each partition.
    Regards,
    Josh

Well, this is not easily answered. You can shrink existing partitions in order to add additional ones. But in order to add space from one partition to another that can only be done by first removing the lower partition first. If that partition has data, then it will be lost. Unfortunately, Disk Utility cannot manipulate partitions in place. You need a third-party utility for that, iPartition 3.4.1.
Now with that said I'll pass on a bit of advice. Do not us your Time Machine backup drive for extra storage. External storage and backups should be kept on separate drives. I suggest you get a separate drive for your storage or Time Machine backups.
If you use Disk Utility you can shrink your Time Machine partition, but the only way to put that space in another partition is to first delete the storage partition, then recreate it with a larger capacity.

  • Deleting from Library when Video File on hard drive already deleted

I keep getting an error message saying I Tunes must close when I try to update any video content - I have narrowed it down to the fact that a video still resides in my Library with a checkmark next to it, however the actual video file on the hard drive has been deleted. I have tried a right click and clear option, but get the same error message and I tunes closes. How can I remove this from my library??

  • I clearing space on hard drive,wheel deleted.I'm told it's important,how do I return this user  called 'wheel',on hard drive.On my MacBook air 11(Late).

HELP! In attempt clearing space on hard drive, user called 'wheel' got deleted.I'm told it's important, how do I return this user  called 'wheel',on hard drive. On my MacBook air 11(Late).

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Why is external hard drive music deleting?

I have 11,000 songs - they are all on an external hard drive. Itunes knows to look to that hard drive. However, when I download new music, I have noticed if I don't save the new music to the hard drive, it will erase all 11,000 songs and only show the new.
I downloaded 40 songs, saved them to the downloaded folder and later drug them into Itunes. All 11,040 songs showed. The next morning I woke up and there were only 40 songs in my library. Where did my 11,000 go?
This has happened before and I have redirected Itunes to the external, but have had to wait for all 11,000 to download again and then had to resync my ipod. That is not practical.

Each time you start iTunes it should show you all the content it has last time you ran it. At present some users running AVG are finding that sometimes when they start iTunes most of their content is missing. What remains listed is their iTunes purchases, though these are in fact links to the stream or download those songs from the store. iTunes doesn't selectively display or not display media based on location, though it may fail to play media that isn't where it is expected to be. This can happen if an external drive letter changes.
If iTunes starts up showing less media than you expect it to then the obvious conclusion is that the library has become corrupt. The media is likely to all still be in place on the hard drive. You should be able restore an earlier version of the library in the way described in this post. If something completly different is going on I'd be interested in the details. I may be able to offer useful suggestions. If you don't already do so you ought to backup against such problems.

  • Hard Drive Accidental Format NTFS to OSX Extended Journaled

Ok so here is what happened.
I had 2 external HDD's connected to my MBP I wanted to format one and copy data from the other to it. The one with the Data on it was an NTFS Drive.
The one I wanted to copy data to was also NTFS.
My intention was to format the new drive as OSX Extended Journaled and copy the data to it.
I was interrupted at just the wrong time by someone asking a question and formatted the wrong darn drive.
I used the built in Disk utility with the erase option fortunately the default setting under security was set to not erase data.
Does anyone have an idea how to get the data back or change the format back to NTFS without loosing the data ?
Here is a curious thing at one time I had the drive I need to recover formatted with OSX Extended journaled and then later formatted it as NTFS to copy data from a PC. NTFS was the format prior to my screw up.
So the history went like this: OSX with data on it NTFS with data OSX erase by mistake now need NTFS data back.
The curious thing is that when I run Data Recovery 2 it pulls back data from when it was originally OSX but not from the more recent NTFS.
    Help really appreciated.

In between the time I posted and you replied I came to a similar conclusion. I downloaded a trial version of Ontrack easy recovery pro and I am very surprised to see that nearly all of the data is recoverable.
It looks Like I will be spending some money as the demo worked great.
The strange thing in all of this is that each of the different utilities pulled data from their respective native operating systems, but not he other. Ah the joy of running windows on a mac
I guess data is more persistent on hard drives than some would lead us to believe.

  • LOST Project File when external hard drive accidentally unplugged!

My external hard drive got knocked out and the project file is now nowhere to be found anywhere. Anybody experience this and/or have ANY advice?

Thats bad news ... how long had you been working on the project? Regardless, it looks like its time to start over. Looking on the bright side tho, its a valuable lesson well learnt and a good reminder to everyone else. Never keep all your eggs in one basket ie keep you main project file and autosave files separate. Personally, I keep the your Autosave Vault on an external drive but work with the main project file on the internal (startup) drive, then copy that saved main project file across to the external as a backup at the end of each day. And re the autosave settings, make sure they are suitable ... I see lots of folks leave their autosave at the default save every 30 minute setting ... don't know about you but my fingers work fast enough that 30 minutes work would be way more than I'm willing to use.
    Good luck with the rebuild
    Andy
