Hard drive and airport extreme connection problem.

Hi folks,
I have an airport extreme and a WD 1TB pasport for mac hard drive. I had it connected for ages and used it to load movies onto to keep my macbook empty. I had no problems accessing it wirelessly through Finder until today when i configured the extreme to run at 5ghz. When i try to connect now, it tells me that the ip address is wrong but im connected to the extreme for internet. Any clues or solutions?

your Airport Extremes ip address is the red square, Then your going to copy that
So in the red box instead of Http:// we are going to put ftp:// then you should get
a pop up say connecting to server and I hope you do get that.

  • Usb hard drive and AirPort Extreme

I have been using an external usb hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme to store music which is then picked up by a Sonos system to play music even when my iMac is switched off - has been working great.  However I became aware recently (and I think this pre-dates upgrading my iMac to Mountain Lion) that my external hard drive no longer shows up as a shared drive within Finder.  If I go into Airport Utility / Edit / Disks - 'enable file sharing' is checked.  Disk Utility doesn't see the drive but I'm not sure that really means anything as a network drive rather than a drive connected directly to the iMac.
Has some recent upgrade disabled network drives on Airport Extreme's (ie assuming we are all now backing up to iCloud so don't need it)?
    Thanks

OK, I feel silly on this one.
After looking for issues with the airport and not finding any and needing a file from my backup drive, I had to connect it up to my PC. That's when I found my solution.
The Drive I had connected had stopped responding. That's why the Airport was not showing it and not allowing connections. I had power cycled the drive a few times while testing, just not long enough. I unplugged the drive for 2 minutes, all cables, then reconnected. After about 5 minutes, the Airport was able to confirm the drive and turned the share back on.
    Hope that helps.

  • Time machine problems w/ external hard drive and airport extreme

Time machine is keeping backup for only 6 days + the hourly backup. When I open time machine preferences, though, it appear that time machine is off. When turning it on it does not show my external hard drive (however, the backup has been running as mentioned above, for 6-day history). When I select other time capsule it shows the airport extreme but nothing can be done from then on.

  • How to connect a hard drive on Airport Extreme (second edition)

how to connect a hard drive on Airport Extreme (second edition)? Does it need a special format? It is now fromat on FAT32, but i don't see it ??

The USB port your Mac is high powered. The port on the AirPort Extreme is not.
So, it tends to be borderline as far as its ability to supply sufficient power to a hard drive...even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
Often, users...including me....need to use a powered USB hub when they attach any drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
You might want to give that a try. Double check to make sure that the drive is formatted in FAT32 as well, since Windows NTFS or exFAT will not work with the AirPort Extreme.
Powering down and restarting the entire network.....modem first, then router, etc.....is something that you would always want to do after any change or addition to a network.

  • How to deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping

was curious if anyone one knows how to temporally deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping every 30mins and have to wait 12 second for the drive to spin up and wait for the beach ball to stop spinning. Getting really aggravating.... Thanks

The external harddrive is NTFS format and someone from apple told me that it would have to be reformatted to be seen by the Extreme -- Needless to say with 33% of the hard drive filled, I do NOT want to reformat.
Unfortunately, HDDs attached to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, cannot be recognized by the AirPort if formatted in NTFS. If you do not wish to reformat this drive, you will either have to use a different drive or connect this drive to a Windows PC for sharing on the network.
The AirPort can only share drives formatted in HFS+ or FAT32.

  • Can't add hard drive to Airport Extreme

I wanted to add an external hard drive to Airport Extreme and I can't get it to show up in my net work. If I go to the configuration program for Airport Extreme, I can see that the base station has identified that hard drive (a Lacie 750 mb drive). Any suggestions?

I have the exact same problem with one twist I tried adding an 8gb memory stick instead of a spinning hard drive. Airport utility recognizes it but it does not show up on any of the computers.

  • Hard drive to airport extreme for time machine and iPhoto library

Can I buy an external hard drive and connect to my airport extreme to be used to host my iPhoto library. Meaning that no mater what Mac I upload an image to iPhoto in, it is referencing the same library on an external drive.

While you can do this as Kappy points out, there a few details that you might want to consider before you make the move.
    1) Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple. While this does seem to work for some users, others (like me) have difficulty with corruption issues. The bottom line is that this is not a reliable method to back up your important data....and, no support or help from Apple if you do have difficulties.
Reference this Apple Support Document to confirm:
"Time Machine can’t back up to an external disk connected to an AirPort Extreme......"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    2) If you move the iPhoto library to the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme....your original or master library now resides on that disk.....and you have no backup for the library.....when, not if.....the drive has a problem.
    3) You might want to post in the iPhoto forum to ask if it is still an iPhoto requirement that only one user at a time can have iPhoto open with the shared library arrangement.

  • Can i connect hard drive to airport extreme in bridge mode

I just bought a hard drive and want have it connected to my airport extreme which is in bridge mode so that I can use it with U verse. Will I be able to backup my files on my macbook without connecting the usb on the hard drive to the macbook itself?

Will I be able to backup my files on my macbook without connecting the usb on the hard drive to the macbook itself?
This all depends on what you mean by backup your files.
Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, so if you are planning to use Time Machine, the better strategy would be to connect the drive directly to your Mac.
If you want to drag/drop or copy/paste regular data files to the hard drive, that should work OK
Remember that the drive should be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as most store bought drives will come pre-formatted for Windows NTFS.
The USB port at the AirPort Extreme is under powered, so you almost always have to use a powered USB hub with a hard drive here....even if the drive has its own power supply.

  • How do I use a seagate external hard drive with airport extreme?

I have a 1tb Seagate external hard drive and I connected it to the USB port at the back of my Airport Extreme. I opened Airport Utility and am now lost. How do I access the hard drive?
(I have a Macbook Pro running os x version 10.8.2)

The external hard drive must be formatted either in Apple's HFS+ or in Microsofts FAT32 in order for it to be recognized. You can format the drive by connecting it to your Mac and bringing up "Disk Utility".

  • How do I get my computers to see my external hard drive on airport extreme?

  • External Drive and Airport Extreme ?'s

I am using my airport extreme as a bridge for wireless printing (I currently have the AT&T U-Verse Residential Gateway as my router) and trying to use an external drive for both my imac and macbook for backup. I know I have accessed it a few times this way but now I get a message that says "can't find original item" or something to that effect. When I open the airport utility, I can see it as a disk, when I open finder, I click on my airport under shared and select my external drive and connect as me with the password. It takes a while to come up with the message cannot find original item. I can hear the external drive power up when I connect. Is there something I'm missing? I can plug it into both the imac and macbook directly and it works fine. I do have file sharing turned on. All suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

I have a new question, and perhaps I am supposed to start a "new question":
Actually, yes, you should if you want it to get the attention it deserves to solicate assistance from other users.
I am setting up this shared hard drive and it has the option under airport utility to "share disks over the internet using Bonjour. I checked this box and it directed me to create a global hose name and password, which I did. So now that that is done, how do I actually access my "global hose" when connected over 3G or not at home? What do I type in safari to get to it?
Interestingly, this option never seemed to ever get fully implemented as it required a combination of services that no one seems to offer. This service uses wide-area Bonjour.
Also, if I want to access with a Windows computer, it asks for WINS Server info. No idea what to put in there.
This option is not required so you can safely ignore it.

  • Why can't I find my external hard drive on Airport Extreme?

I have recently moved into a different home and set up the internet through Airport Extreme that works fine.  However, I can not find the external hard drive plugged in to the Airport USB which used to show up in Macintosh HD under Devices.
I have unplugged and restarted the Airport, hard drive, and IMac numerous times.  I have reset the Airport back to original settings and created a new network. Not sure what to do next.

The drive was hooked in the exact same way 2 days ago at my old address and worked perfectly.
"The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, so that would be the first thing to check."
    How do I do this?
"Next, the power at the USB port is borderline as far as its ability to supply adequate power to a hard drive....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.....so a number of users find that they need to use a powered USB hub."
I will look in to finding a powered USB hub but I don't understand why it would work 2 days ago and not today...
"You will need to open the Finder and click on the Go menu, then click Network to see the drive. Double click it to mount is on the desktop."
Correct, I used to find Airport there under Shared where I could click on Airport to access the hard drive.  I don't see Airport at all.
"Finally, if you are planning to use the drive for Time Machine backups, that type of setup is not officially supported by Apple, so results will be unpredictable if you try this."
My hard drive is exclusively music files that I share between Imac and Macbook.

  • Attached hard drive on Airport Extreme frequently disconnects

Google search shows people downgrading firmware to 7.4.  My firm ware is 7.6.1.
I am using this disk with both 10.6.8 imac and 10.7.1 mba for time machine backup
    What is the proper solution?
(Only after I bought this Airport Extreme to use a time machine for two macs, I read an apple official page that usb attached drives are not supported for time machine.   Can anyone confirm that Time capsule are indeed working flawlessly when used as such?  I failed to see the difference in time capsule and Airport Extreme with usb drive attached)

I have a 20" Intel OS 10.5.6,DSL modem,Airport Extreme Base,LaCie 500GB USB HD. I made 4 partitions 3 mac HFS, 1FAT32 since I used boot camp to install my old Win XP. With the HD connected to the Mac, all is well and even backed up 1056 using Superduper.
With the HD connected to the AEBs,airport utility-manual-disks (in the disks window the HD and all partitions are there)-file sharing- secured shared disks with APE PW. That said, still nothing on the desktop.

  • File transfer speed in Shared USB Hard Drive via Airport Extreme

I' am planing to buy one of this, but first I need to know what kind of file transfer speed I can expect when sharing USB drive via Airport Extreme 1000Mbps Ethernet.
    Thanks.

most likely 14m/sec but normally 10.5 this is ethernet wired and usb attached. wireless would be about 8M/sec
Wired is good enough I use it for Finder copy frequently.
