Hard Drive and External Hard drive filled up instantly?

While using my Mac today, I came up with a dialogue box saying my hard drive (and external hard drive) are both full. This is strange because this morning I had over 30GB on my internal hard drive, and between 100GB and 300GB on my external hard drive.
How can both of these fill up at once?
I had uploaded approximately 100 photos to my external hard drive this morning, but there was still plenty room then.
What is going on?

HI Matt,
Get Disk Inventory so you can see exact sizes of files and folders.
*"I came up with a dialogue box saying my hard drive (and external hard drive) are both full. This is strange because this morning I had over 30GB on my internal hard drive, and between 100GB and 300GB on my external hard drive."*
Not sure what's going on but it would be a good time to boot from your install disk and check the hard drive.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart

    tornado2003,
What you need to do is boot into Safe Mode. Then delete the VGA Drivers.
After that boot normally and install the latest nVidia ForceWare Drivers
    Take Care,

  • How to export photos with editing from preview mode to hard drive and external hard drive?

I have applied changes to the photos in the preview mode. Unfortunately, I can't export them from preview mode to hard drive and external drives. Whenever the external drive is plugged, the changes I made are not applied to the photos on the both hard drives.

Sorry what do you mean Preview Mode? There is no Preview mode or module in LR. There is a Library and Develop module in LR. The Library module does have the ability to do some adjustments and the Develop module has all the image adjustments.
In any event to export an image you can either right click on it and select Export or when in the Library module you click the button that says Export.

  • Can time machine backup internal hard drive and external hard drive?

Hi, I have an iMac that I recently bought Leopard for specifically for Time Machine, which I heard rave reviews. I have a 160gb internal drive that I use for the OS and a 750gb external drive that I use for storing all my media (pics, music, movies). I recently bought an additional external hard drive, capacity 1tb. The original intention was to backup both my internal drive and my external drive to the new 1 tb drive through time machine.
When I go into the Time Machine preferences/options, it lists that the 750 drive is not to be backed up and I cannot remove it from the list. I called Apple support and they stated that you cannot backup an external drive through Time Machine which I think is ridiculous.
Both drives are connected to the computer via Firewire. Is there something I'm not doing right? Does anyone have a possible solution?
Please help as I incredibly annoyed with Apple if this is actually the case. Thanks

they told you that?! unbelievable. that's quite false. TM will back up any directly attached drive (external or internal) provided it's properly formatted. it has to be formatted mac os extended. how is your drive formatted?

  • Burning iDVD to DVD disc with i Book G4 combo drive and external DVD drive

7/6/2006. After much recent experimentation with iLife, iMovie and iDVD, I found how to use themes and set up movies in my iBook G4 purchased two years ago near Chicago (updated to OS 10.3.9). To burn an iDVD file to a DVD disc on a "combo drive" (that is, it has no DVD writer drive) iBook or other comparable Mac, go to File on the top horizontal tool bar and down there to "burn to DiscImage." Depending on the size of the file, it will take about four hours for every hour of movie file to encode it. I just set it up that night, went to bed and woke up the next morning with it finished. Once encoded, it doesn't need to be encoded again and can be used in the future. But Toast 7 Titanium will not burn it to an external DVD writer as "video." but it will burn the video file as "data." And pretty fast. The 'data' file still remains a video file and will do everything the video file does, only now from an external round DVD disc, too. I discovered this by accident, although Matt (tech support) reminded me about DiscImage. Later, David (also in tech support) told me to download newer versions of iDVD and iMovie, but that did not work, nor had he ever tried it. Remember for a combo drive and using iDVD, and also iMovie, under File burn to DiscImage and save on an external disc as "data." My external DVD write is by LaCie. Best wishes. Like altero said, you're not using Toast properly... Follow these directions:
Suggest you create a disc image from iDVD and then burn the DVD. In iDVD: File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Fusion drive and external data drives

How does Fusion drive behave if you have data on an external device?  I just odered a new Mini and I'm a Logic user with hundreds of GB worth of data on an external RAID 5 exclosure.  Will files stored on the RAID be copied to the Fusion Drive when accessed frequently, or will that functionality be strictly for the boot volume?
    Thanks!

You can definitely create a Fusion Drive using an external drive to add capacity, and in fact it can be a great thing to do as the SSD will eliminate most of the latency involved.
The SSD will contain whatever the most frequently used blocks are, and these will moved from your HDD(s) onto the SSD to provide the performance improvement. This means you could potentially end up with any number of your working files on the SSD depending upon how often you use them (or have been using them recently). This is important to keep in mind; the SSD in a Fusion Drive is not the cache as a cache-disk, meaning that if the SSD fails you will lose data and have to rebuild your Fusion Drive from backups.
This will essentially eliminate the redundancy advantage of RAID-5, as while you can replace any HDDs that fail as normal, an SSD failure will render the volume unusable.
I'm actually currently interested in whether a RAID-1 of SSDs can be used within a Fusion Drive, as it could allow the SSD part of the Fusion Drive to be given redundancy too, in which case the setup would be safe as it'd be 2x SSDs in RAID-1 + HDDs in RAID-5, giving you one to two disks worth of redundancy. However I suspect it won't work, as I believe Fusion Drive just queries each disk to determine if it is an SSD, and of course an Apple RAID won't identify itself as such.

  • Backup internal and external hard drives-TC and offsite

I now have Mavericks 10.9.3 on my iMac with a 2TB (1.25 TB used) internal hard drive.
I also have some external drives attached to my iMac with older iPhoto libraries and other files (total file sizes 940 GB and 505 GB).  I primarily use Aperture now on my internal hard drive, but still access those iPhoto libraries on my external drives on occasion.  I have Time Machine backup my iMac internal hard drive on my 2TB Time Capsule regularly.
My primary question is in regards to getting another copy onto a larger external drive that covers my internal and external drives so I can have a backup off-site.  Online backup services seem to always exclude external drives.  So a physical drive I can have offsite seems to be the best option.
A year ago I changed the destination of my Time Machine backup to be on a 3TB external drive (backed up iMac internal hard drive and the two externals).  However, when I changed the destination of the backup back to the Time Capsule, the TM initiated a brand new backup (it did not recall that I had backed up prior to that on my Time Capsule).
I want to backup monthly, if not quarterly for my off-site storage.  But, if every time I change the destination drive for TM, a new backup profile is created, it will overwork my drives unnecessarily.
Is there a backup program or a process on "disk utility" I could run parallel to TM that I just use quarterly capturing only the changes/additions in those few months for both the internal and external hard drives?  Also, is there a way to add an external drive to my Time Capsule that is solely used to wirelessly backup the two externals on a regular basis (i.e. keep the internal 2TB drive backing up to the Time Capsule; and the external hard drive attached to Time Capsule via USB used as the backup drive for the external hard drives)?
Summary:  I need to backup regularly to the local Time Capsule/additional external hard drive.  The data will come from my internal hard drive and my two external hard drives.  I also want to do quarterly backups of the additions/changes to all three drives to have on an offsite external drive that I manually backup to quarterly.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Carbon Copy Cloner is not on the App store.
Correct.. it is not approved because Apple do not like the fact that CCC (and most likely superduper) which are the most popular backup software for Mac because it makes a bootable clone. Apple will never approve of that. But let me assure you that is the genius of it. If the internal disk fails, you simply boot from the external. It is $40 but you can use on all the computers in your home.
CCC is a clone.. ie when it does the backup, any changes on the drive are changed on the clone. It does not work like Time Machine which simply piles up incrementals until the drive fills up. The idea of CCC is a backup of the drive as it exists at any point in time. TM btw is also not a reliable archive, ie it thins backups constantly.. so you should never rely on it to archive old versions.. but in the middle of a project it does a good job to keep various versions of your files. That is why I specifically said in my last post do not stop using it.
and you can keep using the TC just for the internal drive.
Keep TM running to the TC.. that will then keep a current hourly incremental of your drive. You can set CCC in a way which is a lot more flexible. ie backup just at the end of the day. There is no need for constant hourly backups. So to answer the second question.. you are still using your TC and TM.. but I suggest you only backup the internal drive.
Please read a bit from forum expert Pondini on the value of clones and TM.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html
That's why many folks use both Time Machine and a bootable clone, to have two separate, independent backups, with the advantages of both.  If one fails, the other remains.
    Now the ports issue.
You can of course continue to use USB2. Just that moving large volumes around will be slow.. as doubtless you already know.
On your particular Mac since you missed out on USB3 which is a pain.. you can buy a Thunderbolt to USB3 adapter like the belkin.
    http://www.belkin.com/au/p/P-F4U055/
I suggested the Thunderbolt to Esata (it is an older interface and the adapter is rather cheaper but I hear more reliable.. check reviews for both).
    http://store.apple.com/au/product/H8875ZM/A/lacie-esata-hub-thunderbolt-series
Sata is the interface of the hard disk.. Esata just means external sata.. so it is native and without conversion.
I was merely suggesting ways to speed things up. But as long as you don't run CCC on more than daily basis then I think you will be fine just with USB 2. It will take a while on the day you do the swap over for the archive volume, but if you turn off the power saving in the Mac and leave it run overnight it should be able to do most of it.. you need to realise it will have to deep scan both the disks.. to compare files.. but CCC is based on Rsync and it is extremely fast and efficient. I am just not sure I know how long it will take to do. Anyway.. there is a plan.. tweak and adapt as you see fits your needs.

  • I am trying to gather all of my music into one place, but it is scattered throughout my computer and external hard drive, how can I put it all in one folder and then create one library off of it?

My first problem is that I need to get all of my music files in one folder, they are scattered throughout my computer and external hard drive and I am trying to get them all together. Afterwards I want to send this music to my microsd hard in my Samsung Galaxy s4, is there a way to proceed through this? Or at least one part of it?

    Consolidate your iTunes Library
As for the other part of the question, iTunes syncs with Apple devices.
Simply copy the media desired from the computer to the microSD card.  This has nothing to do with iTunes.

  • Please Help - Time Capsule and External hard drive Issues

Recently, I switched from Comcast to AT&T uverse as my internet provider and I started experiencing problems.
    (1) I have a 4th generation Apple Time Capsule which I am using as my router.
    (2) Connected to the Apple Time Capsule - USB - is an external hard drive (not for backup with Time Machine.)
    (3) I have a 2011 Macbook pro which I use to access my file on my time capsule and external hard drive.
    (4) I had been using my AT&T portable Hotspot from my cell phone to get internet access on my MacBook pro from remote locations to gain access to my external hard drive which is attached to the time capsule.
    (5) On August 2, 2014, I switched from Comcast to AT&T and had the AT&T turn off the router function. (I have been using the router from my apple time capsule)
    (6) Under Network I switched to bridge mode.
    (7) And since August 2, 2014 my time capsule has not been backup.
THE PROBLEM - I need to be able to use the hotspot function from my cell phone to gain access on the external hard drive using my MacBook Pro which I was able to do before. Now it is showing time capsule under finder but unable to connect.
Do I need to reset my Time Capsule since I have a new service provider. Everything else works fine - meaning able to get internet signal but unable to access my external hard drive and backup my time capsule. Please HELP.

If you got ATT to turn off router function in their modem..
Then 6. is wrong.. You cannot have the Network switched to bridge mode..
You must have it set to dhcp and nat.
That is also why you cannot backup.. the TC is off the network.
Please change back to router mode in the TC.
Ensure the internet tab shows dhcp and you create a wireless network.
Then power down the TC... power down the ATT modem.. wait about 20min (you can try 5min.. but it might not be long enough).
Power up the ATT modem.. wait 2min for things to flash lights in de right blinkin order.. then start the TC.
Open the airport utility and make sure your TC captured the public IP and is now working as the router.
That should fix that end of it.. the hotspot end??
    Tell us what happens.

  • Time Machine and External Hard Drive wireless backup over airport extreme

Ok can this be done? I have an external HD that I used a firewire to connect to my macbook pro and it backed up my movies, photo's etc without a problem.
When I realized I could plug the HD into the back of the extreme I tried that and I can see the shared HD in my finder but I cannot get time machine to backup wirelessly now and I can't see my previous back up in Time machine but I can see it when I look on the HD.
Can I continue to do my backups over the extreme wirelessly? How do i do this? Or do I have to plug the firewire and mac into the HD each time I want to back up using time machine?
    Thanks,

I hope that support is added to the airport extreme. I would be disappointed in apple to learn that they have disabled it for the airport extreme and connected hard drive in order to only sell another piece of hardware (time capsule) that is simply the airport extreme with a hard drive built in.
There are reported work arounds for getting the airport extreme and external hard drive to work with time machine. A couple google search results outlined the process, it didn't look too complicated. I would prefer it was a feature and not a work around though.

  • ILife with both internal and external hard drives?

I've been considering switching from a homebrew, multi-boot desktop to a MacBook for my primary computer, in part so I can hang out with my family in the living room rather than be exiled to the home office when I want to compute.
But here's my concern: I have media. We have about 50 GB of iTunes; maybe 30 GB of iPhoto; and tons and tons of digital video that would be stored in iMovie. Obviously the libraries are all interlinked. And it's all growing. I also like to rip DVDs and re-encode them for my iPod and AppleTV. Right now, my desktop has 480 GB of internal storage and that's just about enough.
I have discovered that the MacBook only comes with an option up to 250 GB. I absolutely need AppleCare, so I can't get an aftermarket hard drive. (All my Macs break - this one from the office that I'm on right now has a bum DVD drive, and my wife's has needed both fan and logic board replacements.)
While I'm aware of the existence of external hard drives, I'm concerned about Apple's non-external-hard-drive-friendly way of storing iLife data. If I wanted to keep more recent or useful music and photos on the internal drive but older stuff on an external, and still be able to use iLife seamlessly, would that be possible? (I see myself editing recent video in the living room, but then hooking back into the external HD in the office if I need older stuff.)
What solutions are out there for integrating data stores on both internal and external hard drives into an iLifestyle?
    Thanks!

    Sascha Segan1 wrote:
.. What solutions are out there for integrating data stores on both internal and external hard drives into an iLifestyle?
all iApps (iPhoto, iTunes, iM08) support usage of external drives as 'mass storage' devices.. you can tell all apps which drive to use for the Libraries.. there some tools out there, which even allow the usage of 2/many different Libraries in iTunes/iPhoto..
for iM in detail: the Projects are small files, and should stay internal (allthough I'm discribing a 'hack' on my site: http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/im08tricks Project Library (and Events) on External Harddrive); the Events (=GBs) could be located on as much ext. HDDs as you want..
    but ...
all iApps are single-user .. you can NOT 'share' Libraries to 2/many different users; the idea of a 'media server' which hosts/shares all kind of data to all kind of users is not 'on concept' of iLife ..

i can't import any photos. 'Could not copy to requested location' is the given but i have tried importing to both hard drive and external drive. Help please ?

Most likely, the "requested location" where you are trying to copy files to does not have WRITE permission, and so you need to change the permissions.

Since your current editing workflow is based around Virtual Copies there are no actual files containing the edit data. Therefore, you'll need to use the 'Import from another catalog' option ( see File menu).
