HArd Drive and New OS

Last year I replaced the HD on my iMac with a 60gig Seagate after the original died. In an embarassing bow to my 'other life' as one who is forced to use a PC at work, I partitioned the drive BOOT, DOCS, MOVIES/PHOTOS, giving the MOVIES/PHOTOES about 45 gig, docs, 8 and now the BOOT drive has 611 meg available. (I had problems with the formatting on a Windows PC that automatically set up just 3 gig for the c: drive and 7 gig for ther d: drive. Then WXP filled up the 3 gig pretty quickly with registry junk, etc. casuing the machine to slow considerably).
Also, I set up 2 users (myself and wife) so we could have our own separate emails, etc. It's a waste as now I have a PC laptop, an unused G3, and a broken Powerbook (needs display). One identity on the iMac would suffice.
First questions: SInce IE 5.2 and Safari 1.0.3 aren't working on certain sies, I went to upgrade them, and get the "you need newer OS" messages. I'd have to upgrade to Panther or Tiger, both of which will require buttloads of space on the BOOT drive. Can I install on another drive and mak the iMac boot the new OS from it? Or do I need to reformat? and what if I reformat? Do I lose all data?
Second Questions: Is Tiger rock solid? Or am I better off with Panther on the 400mHz iMac G3 with 384 RAM?
Last Question: If I wanted to setup a network with the G3, Powerbook and iMac, could I use a drive on the G3 for all pics, music and stuff I want to keep and keep that backed up with a USB, FW, Internet site or similar backup and access that from all the cliebnts. Sounds like a stupid question, but when I look at how iTunes and iPhoto work, it seems like they really want their stuff on the host machine.
Sorry so long...

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Lots of questions. I try to hit them all.Can I install on another drive and mak the iMac boot the new OS from it? Or do I need to reformat?I suggest that you reformat your HDD using Disk Utility. Adding a second drive is not necessary. If you need more storage capacity intall a larger HDD up front. Drives have come down in price and are faster than they used to be when your computer was built.and what if I reformat? Do I lose all data?Yes, the process of reformatting will destroy all your data. So you will need to backup your Users Folder where all your data and settings are kept. The best way to do this is to use an external Firewire HDD, and clone to it using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. If you need help with backing up, please post back.Is Tiger rock solid? Or am I better off with Panther on the 400mHz iMac G3 with 384Both RAM?Both Panther and Tiger are very stable and powerful. Panther will do a great job at a smaller price. You can purchase Panther at applerescue, as well as Tiger on CDs. You can purchase Tiger at the Apple Store on DVD. Here are the minimum system requirements for for Panther, and for for Tiger. You will need to purchase a Full Retail Version or universal installer for either one.If I wanted to setup a network with the G3, Powerbook and iMac, could I use a drive on the G3 for all pics, music and stuff I want to keep and keep that backed up with a USB, FW, Internet site or similar backup and access that from all the cliebnts. Sounds like a stupid question, but when I look at how iTunes and iPhoto work, it seems like they really want their stuff on the host machine.I suggest that you format your HDD as a single partition and keep your apps and your data on the same volume as it makes for easier expansion as you add to your data and better functionality for your computer.
If I have missed anything, please post back with further questions.
Good luck.

  • External hard drive and new downloads help

I recently got an external hard drive for my music because my library would no longer fit in my internal hard drive. So I copied my itunes folder, including itunes media folder and my itunes library file, onto the hard drive, then set my destination for my library under the advanced settings in itunes as the place where the media folder is (I believe its F:\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media) and thought I was good to go. All the music that I put on there on the initial copy work fine and are good to go. However, when I download new music from the Store, this new music does not appear in my library for some reason. The downloads are in my purchased playlist and they can be added to other playlists, but I cannot view them in my library. Furthermore, the files are on the external hard drive in the itunes media folder, and when I click on the files in there they play fine within itunes. I have also noticed that I cannot add files to my library that are on my external hard drive. I ripped a song off of youtube that was not in the Store, and saved it to a file within F:\My Music. When I try to add this file to my library, it is nowhere to be found. What in the world is going on here?

    Hi B,
Prepare the external HD by connecting to the Mac, open Disk Utility, select the manufacturer’s name of the external HD, select Partition and choose GUID Partition Table, format to Apple OS Extended (Journaled); quit Disk Utility.
    Open System Preferences.
    Click on Time Machine.
    Click on “Select Disk.”
Click just to the left of "On" to turn TM on if it's not already on.
Click on the disk or partition you want to use.
    Click on “Use for backup.”
Leave external HD connected, and TM will automatically do its thing.
TM's first backup will be slightly smaller than the size of the disk space used on the HD it is backing up. Subsequent backup sizes will be greatly reduced (maybe a few percent of the original, depending on how much new data has been saved to the HD TM is backing up).

  • New hard drive and new memory install (Powerbook G4)

Hi everyone, I hope the community can help me through a rough patch! I tried searching through the forum but haven't found specific answers to my dilemma. Here's the deal: I've installed a new hard drive in a Powerbook G4, the original hard drive died.
I have the Leopard install retail disc, and want to install the OS on the new hard drive. I also have a RAM upgrade that I want to install. So, in order, here are my questions:
    1) To install OS, do I just turn the computer on and insert the install disc? Or do I need to do some other command to do the install, such as holding a key(s) down when I insert the disc? Is there anything else I need to do to format the new hard drive properly?
    2) Can I upgrade the RAM before I install the OS, or must I install OS first? And if I can install the RAM prior, will it help speed up the install process?
    3) Finally, how long should the install process take? What screens should I expect seeing? Will I be staring at the spinning beach ball for a long time?
I look forward to any helpful feedback, thank you so much!

The weirdest thing is that the laptop's disc drive was accepting discs, and now it won't. I highly doubt that there's a hardware failure there, I certainly didn't abuse the computer during this process. Now when I try to push a disc in, it goes about 99% of the way in with just a hair sticking out, but I can't even force it totally in.
This suggests that you didn't quite get everything right when you reassembled the G4 after replacing the hard drive. Clearances are very tight & even just a grommet or support bracket slightly misaligned can prevent everything from fitting together properly. You don't say which Powerbook G4 model you have, but for example, note the number of detailed steps & items marked "important" in the PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) Hard Drive Replacement Instructions & especially the comments below figure 16 about the optical drive.
Whatever the Powerbook model, I strongly suggest that you refer to a detailed take-apart & replacement guide for anything you might have overlooked -- many models have disassembly/assembly quirks that are not obvious, such as the order that screws need to be removed or replaced, when & where to use a "spudger" to unhook a hidden latch, & so on. A good source for these guides is iFixit's PowerBook pages. Click on your model, then find the guide for the hard drive replacement. These will generally be among the most detailed available, with plenty of pictures & all important screw length info -- it is very easy to get confused about where screws go that differ by only one or two mm.

  • LaCie d2 195 GB USB hard drive and new iMac

Has anybody had a problem with a LaCie d2 drive that is connected via USB instead of FireWire? I have both types of external hard drives; the FireWire connected LaCie has worked flawlessly, as has a Seagate 300GB FireWire drive. But my poor little LaCie 195 GB USB hard drive bit the dust when I tried to copy my iPhoto library from it to the hard drive of my new iMac Intel Core. The entire Mac froze up, even though there was disk activity on the LaCie. After waiting for 25 minutes for the Mac to unfreeze, I finally manually powered down the system. Unfortunately this corrupted my LaCie disk, and it could not be repaired using Disk Utility. Even when I tried to repartition the drive, Disk Utility simply hung to the point where I had to do a Force Quit to get out of it.
I forgot to mention that I was connecting the LaCie through a powered USB 2.0 hub - that could be a source of the problem, but it worked flawlessly in my iMac G5. I did reconnect it directly to a USB port on the iMac, but still could not get Disk Utility to repartition the drive.
Luckily I had a secondary backup of my photo and music files, or I'd really be crying right now.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

Finally it did so once more and has not mounted via FW since. However, USB does mount it but big files take all day to transfer.
I took out the Maxator from the LaCie drive and put it in a FW/USB caddy, ok for a while then the same story. USB only mounting.

Tried new cable. repaired boot drive disc, repaired permissions, ran DiscWarrior over it, repaired permisssions, ran downloaded 10.4.5 combo, ran DiscWarrior over it and finally repaired permissions again.
    No Joy.
i would most appreciate useful suggestions.

  • New MacBook, old hard drive and unsynced iPhone.

Here's the situation. Old MacBook pro died (logic board gave up). I've removed the hard drive and bought an enclosure so that I can plug it in via USB to my new MacBook pro. I am NOT a fan of Migration Assistant. I'm discouraged by the thought of copying unnecessary files. I'd rather drag and drop what I need, and then install applications from scratch. There are so many things I no longer need, anyway. It's spring clean time, after six years. What confuses me is that my iPhone hasn't been synced since my old mac died a month ago. There are new photos and apps on there that I want. I also missed out on updating to iOS 5. I don't want to plug my phone in and get a warning about syncing to a new computer and erasing everything on my phone.
So what's the tidiest way to go about this? Do I first copy my iTunes library over before syncing my phone? What files do I need exactly? Do I copy my old iphoto library over too? Where are my old apps kept? I would love to plug in my phone and it assumes it's just updating as normal. But the most important thing is that I don't lose my new photos. That trip to Iceland is very important to me!
    Please talk me through this!

    Not even a suggestion?

I have itunes directory on an external hard drive and want to direct a new installation of itunes on windows 8 to use it. I tried holding down ctrl and clicking itunes and after many tries got it to work one time. When I went back in later it had reverted back to a blank version of itunes and I cant get ctrl to work again. Any other ideas?

This is sometimes caused by a problem with the iTunesPrefs.xml file, normally found at C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml. Try dragging this to the desktop and trying again.
Alternatively the problem may be that you have McAfee AV and it is preventing iTunes from updating the same file and thus causing the problem. See Why does iTunes delete my itunesprefs.xml? for details.

I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!

The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.

  • Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
    and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?
    Thank you.

    YAY!
I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
    C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.
    THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!

  • I had to install a new hard drive because my old hard drives boot files became corrupted, and i want to get all of my music files off the old hard drive and regain all my play counts/ratings/playlists

    Greetings everyone
as the title says, ive had to install a new hard drive  and i want to transfer my old itunes library onto the new drive, maintaining all playlists/play counts/ratings etc, album artwork if possible. The old hard drive is installed as a slave drive and is completely acessible, but due to the boot files being corrupted i cannot use it as the main drive and therefore operate my old itunes. Also, my ipod no longer contains my music library as itunes synced without my permission and wiped it.
The only thing i have tried is copying all of my old music files from the old drive by selecting 'add folder to library' and then the old drive, then replacing the new itunes library.itl file with the one from my old itunes. This restores all my playlists and playcounts but when i try to play any of the songs it says that the files could not be found, and i dont fancy locating  8500 music files individually!
Thankyou for taking the time to read my post, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ah, my reply was based on the assumption that you had a default installation of iTunes.
i.e you had all your music in the iTunes media folder inside your iTunes folder.
If your iTunes folder is so small compared to the amount of music you have, you must have a different arrangement.
    This complicates you situation considerably.
iTunes can cope with moving around as long as all the music is in the iTunes media folder, not not if it isn't.
Your first step should be to get iTunes working on the old drive. This will involve editing the xml library file so that the drive letter is correct and then rebuilding the library from the xml file.
Then you will need to consolidate your library which moves everything into the iTunes media fodler. After that you will be able to use my first suggestion.
    Step 1
Find the iTunes folder on the old drive and copy the two library files somewhere else so you can find them again. That's iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml.
Now open the copy of iTunes Library.xml with WordPad.
    Look for lines starting:
    Location
These contain the paths to tracks.
You will need to use a find/replace to change the drive letter so that it is correct.
Make sure that you include enough in the "find" so that you only change the right thing.
Maybe /c:/ and replace with /d:/ or whatever.
After that, tell iTunes to use the library on the old drive with a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the old drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
    Then use the method in the following article to rebuild your library;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
Unfortunately the date added will be today for all tracks.
If iTunes works correctly after this, consolidate your library
    File>>Library>>Organize>>consolidate
This copies all tracks into to iTunes media folder and could create a problem if you do not have disk space so don't do it if you are unsure about free disk space.
Check that iTunes works OK and then use the first method.

I moved LR5 catalog (Irdata & Ircat) to a new hard drive and photos. Lost all meta data - How do I move meta data along with catalog?
The meta data for each image is missing.
I have over 2,000 images. I don't want to go back through each image and add meta data.
Is there some way to move everything?

No, do not re-import your images. I assume you can see the thumbnails in the library module, just cannot access the full images, right? If this is the case there should be an exclamation mark in the top right corner of every one of your pictures and you only have to tell LR where the images are now.
Click the exclamation mark of one of the images and a dialog window should pop-up, telling you that LR cannot find the file, but with an option to locate it. Press "Locate" and navigate to the folder on your new HD where the file is. If in the new external HD you kept the same folder structure that you had on the internal disk, LR will be able to find all your images and re-link them to the database without further intervention.

My old PC crashed and I ended up buying a new one.  I was able to recover all my music from the old hard drive and restore it in itunes.  I purchased a new album online thru itunes and added it to my library.  When I tried to add the album to my 6th nano it wouldn't download.  All the tracks are check marked and I can listen to the album on my pc but it won't sync onto the ipod.  The new pc is authorized, any ideas?

You can only sysc with one iTunes library. The new computer is a new library. You have to restore your iPod on the new conputer and then sync.

  • My songs have all been duplicated.  All my music is on external hard drive and I want it to stay there.  Am using a new computer and thought I'd done all the required things for my library to show on iTunes 11.

I'm using a new computer.  All my music is on an external hard drive and I want it to stay there.  Before installing iTunes on the new computer, I followed turingtest2's instructions as to the layout of all the iTunes folders (Itunes folder, Itunes Media, Music, etc...).  I also followed his instructions as to get all my music in iTunes on the new computer (but keeping all the media on the external drive).  Now my songs are all duplicated in my library (I normally have about 15,000 of them). They all play when I click onto them.  Also, I've lost all my playlists, and all the songs in the library are now ticked. I've already spent hours trying to sort this out, but can't seem to find a solution.  Help please!

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for replying.  I've been looking at your posts about setting up iTunes using an external drive.  A bit of background info.  My old computer broke down, so I got a new one from work.  I've always kept my music files on my external drive (I have around 170GB of music).  I didn't follow the suggestions in the "migrate iTunes library" post because my old computer died on me.  However, I've looked at your posts about lay out of the iTunes folders.  Before connecting to iTunes on the new computer, I had reorganized my iTunes folder on my E: external drive, and created an iTunes folder which contains an iTunes Media subfolder.  The music files are in a Music folder, which is in the iTunes Media folder.  I've also put the following files in my iTunes folder: iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, as well as sentinel.  I then followed the advice you gave bmw99 on 2 Nov 2013 at 9.58 (sorry, can't copy the exact answer).
Just to clarify:  I'd like to keep all my music media on the E: external hard drive (the computer hard drive is too small), and I'm aware i might never have my playlists back, and that all the songs in my library might be ticked.  However, I don't want my library to be duplicated.
I'm at work at the moment, but will be back home in about 10 hours, so I can be more specific about folders / files names.
I'm glad you picked up my message and greatly appreciate your help.
