Hard drive and software updates

I have had Final Cut Express HD on my portable hard drive until I deleted it by accident. Now I am trying to redownload it to the hard drive but can't. Every time I try to I get an error message saying I need to have the 10.3.7 update of panther on it so I can download it to the hard drive. I have no idea how to get the 10.3.7 update to download to my portable hard drive. Helpfully someone can help me with this problem

  • Owerbook g4 not starting up after new hard drive and software update

    Hello,
I know that there are several postings that are similliar to this query, but none have answered my question.
    I have a Powerbook g4 15 inch 1.67/1.5 Ghz with 1 gig of Ram.
A few months ago I suddenly found myself unable to log into my computer after trying to render an effect on Final Cut.  After going through Disk Utilities and repairing the Hard drive, the computer seemed to work for a day or so, but then ran into the same problem.  This time Disk Utilities found
    Keys out of order
    rebuilding catalog B-tree
I feared the worst and replaced my hard drive with a Seagate PATA 2.5" Internal Notebook Drive.  Installed OS 10.4 and everything seemed dandy until I tried to re-install Final Cut, which would not allow me to install Live Type.  I remembered that there were some updates for livetype and OS X, so I tried updating the OS X dual update, which got about 90% of the way and then the Kernal Panic display told me to restart the computer.  Okay, this time the computer would hang in the gray apple screen for awhile and then the screen would turn blue.  Ran disk utilities off of the start up disk, and ran into the same B-tree problems (I'm guessing the directory is still damaged somehow).
So I erased and installed OS X again, and after that tried updating OS X, and the same thing happened.  Although this time disk utilities says the hard drive is OK.  Tried resetting PMU, fsck, PRAM, and still the blue screen after initial gray apple screen. Tried safe-mode, but it went to a single user "welcome to Darwin" screen and I didn't know what to do after that.
So, should I try to erase and install again, this time running a repair permission before updating software?  ANY other ideas?  It seems like a directory issue, but I don't know what else to do.

If you do not have anything on the HDD you need to preserve, that is probably a good idea. Here's how I would proceed:

  • Back up to External Hard Drive and then updating IPAD in the future

If you back up your ITunes music to an external hard drive and delete the music on the computer do you have to re import the music when you want to updated your IPod or can you just do the updates from the external hard Drive as long as the Itunes are loaded on the external hard drive as well?

The best way to back up is to use a utility such as DejaVu or any of the many, many alternatives that you can find on MacUpdate.
Essentially, to back up iPhoto you make a copy of the Library on the external Disk.
The most basic way to do this is to drag the Library from the Pictures Folder to the External.
You can back up to DVD in two ways: The Share -> Burn command will create a disk that is readable in iPhoto. Or you can simply drag the Library from the Pictures Folder to the DVD and burn it using the Finder.

  • Importing Home Folder after new hard drive and Lion Update

    (Okay, long title.)
Had to replace my hard drive. Was running Tiger.
Backed up my entire Home Folder only, on an external harddrive, before it failed completely.
Hard drive replaced, and then loaded Snow Leopard, updated to latest version, 10.6.8.
    Ready now to get Lion.
    Questions:
    - After I install Lion do I simply use the "Transfer Information to This Mac" feature to bring in my Home folder?
    - What about the apps that are duplicated, such as Mail, Safari, iCal, etc. Will that be taken care of on its own?
    - What about the iLife apps, GarageBand, iPhoto, etc.? Will I be able to update those to the latest versions?
    Thank you.

If the username and password combo is identical, then you'll need to unhide the new hidden user's Library folder, then open both home folders and transfer you're stuff. Do note that you might get you can't do that messages. For those items, move the new ones into a newly created Desktop folder, and then you should be able to copy the Tiger ones. Once done, restart so the copied stuff is put into RAM and is available for your other steps, such as reinstalling the apps.

  • Driver and software updates for Deskjet printer on Yosemite

I currently have a deskjet printer (3054) and I am wondering if/when updated software/ driver will be released. I am afraid to update to 10.10 and then find out my printer will not work.
    Thanks

    Hello Stock411,
You should not have any issues installing your DJ 3054 on the new Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite.  This also depends on what you are upgrading from.  If you have already installed Full Feature Software on Mavericks, then you should have no issues.  The J610a DJ 3054 is a supported printer on Yosemite.  Please feel free to post any further questions, or concerns.

  • New Hard Drive and software, need to sync iPhone and iPod

Just had my HD replaced. The old one died after 4 years with no warning. I went to authorize the computer in "Store" in iTunes, but it kept telling me the computer was not online and to try again. The iMac was online. As far as I can tell, I must authorize the computer before I can download the data from my iPhone and iPod.
Any ideas? I should be able to sync the calanders and so forth from my iPhone, correct?
    Thanks!

I finally found iTunes 9.2 and it learned my computer was authorized. The iTunes that existed on the old drive - that drive is dead, and I was not able to do anything with it.
    Yes, I can get online.
Now my problem is this: while iTunes will let me transfer songs off the iPod that were purchased on iTunes, all the CDs I ripped will be erased if I sync the iPod. I don't really wish to go through the "re-ripping" process.
Also, iTunes also wants to delete all the apps on my iPhone.
BTW, when I contacted the Apple Store where I spent $400 to have the drive replaced, they told me to call Apple. I asked why no one told me that I would have to repeat every update I ever did to the system over the last few years, and that it might be problematic to sync my devices, they told me to call Apple...

  • I have just purchased my 1st mac and want to start my iTunes fresh.  I have all my music on an external hard drive and want iTunes stored on it.  How do i do this

I have just purchased my 1st Mac Mini,
I haven't imported any music yet except from purchased music.
I have 100gb of music on an external hard drive (already formatted to Mac OS Journaled.
I want my iTunes to be store on the External Hard drive, and to update my External Hard drive with new music I add to iTunes.
I also want to know the best way of adding my music on the Ext Hard drive  e.g.:  "add folder to library" or "import"
I plan on buying a Macbook Pro soon, and want to be able to use the same iTunes library.

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

    Hi Tommy,
Using install discs created for another computer is the problem. I suggest you get a stand alone install disc for Leopard and give that a try. I know it's a bummer since you have a perfectly good install disc but you can't take an install disc from a new computer and use it to update an older computer. As a matter of fact you would have problems using your install disc on the same type of computer if it didn't have the same build number. In the old days of Power Macs that wasn't an issue. You could take an install disc for one computer and update every Mac you owned. Sorry.

  • 10.4.9 and hard drives - safe to update ?

I have 2 external LaCie hard drives - is it considered safe to update to 10.4.9 at this time - I have seen threads concerning hard drives not mounting after updating

The safest thing to do is disconnect all peripherals prior to updating. Also be sure to follow this procedure:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a bootable backup of your current working system:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    C. Important: Please read before installing
    1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
    2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
    3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.
    D. Download and install update(s):1. Use Software Update, or
    2. Download standalone updater(s).

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to the Mavericks OS.  The screen died and I took it into an Apple store and was told replacing the screen and the hardware to repair everything would cost almost as much as buying a new laptop or a cheaper model.  I was told that I can use a drive sled to access data I need on my hard drive. How do I remove my hard drive and use a drive sled to get to the information I need?  What makes matters more complicated is I need to update my iPhone and my iTunes/App store purchases.  How can I accomplish this?
My wife has a late 2008 Macbook Pro as well, which I am assuming I need to run my hard drive.  Is there a way to just access just my hard drive without interfering with hers?
I know this is lengthy.  Thanks to whoever looks at this and offers advice/instruction.

the device you need is an External enclosure for a 2.5" (laptop form factor) SATA drive.
A USB-interface enclosure will be slow, but is adequate for this task and for re-purposing as a backup drive later.  A firewire-interface drive would be faster, but is harder to find, more expensive, and faster than needed for this purpose.
The drive will mount as an "extra" drive on your wife's Macbook, and you can drag and drop whatever you wish. You could create a separate Account for yourself on her computer, and use Migration Assistant or just copy your stuff over to the new account. Then it would not interfere with her files.

I accidentally updated iPhoto on my (now) external hard drive and now it won't let me access any of my photos. What can I do?

So, you have two versions of iphoto? One from the old machine and one from the new?
If so, forget about opening with the older version of iPhoto.
    For the newer version:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • My iMac is disconnecting all my media hard drives and giving "Disk Not Ejected Properly" message since updating to OSX 10.9

Ever since I updated to OSX version 10.9 on my iMac, it is disconnecting all of my media hard drives and giving me the message: "Disk Not Ejected Properly." My hard drives are connected to my iMac through a Nitro Professional 8-port Firewire 800 hub/repeater, and a Firewire 800 cable from the Nitro hub connects to the back of my iMac. This configuration has been working fine for over a year. Suddenly, and immediately after performing the update about a week ago, the drives won't stay connected for more than a few seconds before the iMac disconnects from my drives. I've tried restarting and reconnecting many times and the same thing keeps happening.
I have a new MacBook Pro (one month old) that I've been using temporarily to work with my photos and video on these drives as the drives are able to stay connected to this computer—I put a Thunderbolt adapter onto the Firewire 800 cable to connect to it. Luckily I had not yet updated it to the new operating system and I am afraid to do that. I've had the persistent message that Updates are available for my computer on my MacBook but I will not perform any updates for fear that I will lose access to my media drives. I am a professional photographer, so it's pretty disasterous if I can't access my drives. Please advise me what to do to keep my hard discs connected to my iMac and what to do to keep this from happening with my MacBook.
Thanks in advance for your knowledge and assistance!

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If the problem remains, update to 10.6.8 and repeat.
