Hard Drive Bay 2 Doesn't Show Up, RAID degraded.

I'm getting ready to do a major application upgrade to an existing Xserve (Early 2009).  I've noticed that the Bay 2 Hard Drive wasn't showing up in the RAID Utility.  I got a spare drive and tonight I powered down the server, swapped that drive out and brought it back up.  The system is running fine, but it doesn't seem to recognize the drive in the bay.  Either in the System Profiler or in the RAID Utility.  I've tried both the old drive and a brand new drive that's meant to be an Apple Xserve replacement SATA drive.  I'm concerned that this bay has failed, and if so, I need to sort out what part that is to be replaced.  We bought a repair kit when we both he server, so I have a number of parts for it, including a system board.
The Xserve (Early 2009) is running Server 10.6.8, serves up files from an attached Promise VTrack E-Class drive array.  I'm getting ready to upgrade from Server 10.6.8 to 10.9.5, which I guess is a 2-step process, (upgrading from Server 10.6.8 to Desktop 10.9.5 then putting Server 3.x on top of that.)
If there's some insight into this issue or if the HD Bays are connected to the system board or something else, that would be wonderful to hear.
Thanks in advance!

You could try the xserve in target disk mode connect it to another mac and try swapping the drives, drive bays around to try and pin point where the problem is

I just purchased a new computer that runs windows 8 and it doesn't want to recognize the time capsule as an external hard drive (ie doesn't show up under my compter).  I've downloaded and run airport utility, but it seems to have a hard time finding the time capsule...maybe one out of 10 times it will find it.
What's more, when I look under network infrastructure under the control panel, it shows my Broadcom ADSL centurylink Router...so I'm wondering if my modem/router combo is overriding the router function on my timecapsule and the time capsule is not being used as a router...
    Any help much appreciated!

In this case the TC should be in bridge mode.
Win8 is still problematic. Try using ethernet instead of wireless. I think the drivers are poor still and it is well worth having a try via ethernet if you haven't already.
Otherwise you will need to wait for apple to release bonjour for windows 8 and airport utility.. which is not out yet.
Also make sure the windows is set to home, not work or public.. even turn off the firewall.
Open windows explorer and type the TC ip address into the address bar.. (none of which is perhaps the same.. I gave away windows at vista.. shudder)

  • Help! External hard drive (WD) doesn't show up anywhere (except for in System Information)...

    Hi,
My WD hard drive (160 gb, 3-4 years old) all of a sudden won't show up in Disk Utility or Finder.
Prior to this, I got an error message, saying something like "back up your data and reformat the disk", and I bought myself a new hard drive (a Verbatim) for this. When I connected the two hard drives, the WD wouldn't show up anywhere, except for in System Information, where the following message is displayed under "USB":

My Macbook Pro is a 11.1, with Mavericks installed.
I have all the recordings of my band's new album on this drive, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I'd have to agree with WZZZ. That sounds like either a bad connection, bad cable, or faulty supply. The port could be bad as well but the cable either being bad or not properly plugged in or maybe even worn out. When the "disk ejected" message shows up it's usually because somehow the cable was yanked out of the system while it was plugged in. Intermittenet connections in the cable, particularly in supply lines between the drive and the unit can cause this to happen as well...it's as if you unplugged the external hard drive from the system for a very short time, but the system still picks it up and sees it as bad.

  • How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility

How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility?
Last night i was using my external hard drive, for some reason the folder just closed and i couldn't find it on my desktop.
After googling solutions, i found it in the disk utilities, i clicked on the 'repair' button many times, but it said the 'error...' message.
So i ejected it to try again, now when i connect the USB external hard drive it doesn't show up on my desktop or disk utilities.
I really just want to either repair or recover the data on it because it literally has everything (documents, work files, photos etc) on it,
I downloaded an application to recover my files but it needs the USB to at least show up.recognise it which mine doesn't.
I know i should've backed it up on another USB, this definitely teaches me for next time to back up all my files.
Are the files lost forever or can i recover them by going to a shop or using a software?

    Thank you for responding.
This might sound stupid since i'm not really knowledgeable with Macs,
but since all my files were moved from my mac computer to the external hard drive,
is it possible to recover those files through my Mac - like recovering deleted files?

  • When I plug in my Lacie (thunderbolt) External Drive it doesn't show up on the desktop. I need to move some stuff out of my hard drive to make room.

When I plug in my Lacie (thunderbolt) External Drive it doesn't show up on the desktop. I need to move some stuff out of my hard drive to make room. I have very little room left on the hard drive and need to move an iPhoto library.

i have a lacie, and i encrypted it.  i had to wipe it, because it kept dropping off over and over and re-logging in.  so unencrypted i went.
at some point it wasn't recognized at all.  sometimes disk utility would open it, but then it got to the point that it wouldn't recognize it either.
i hadn't realized that the power supply was dysfunctional.  but i was able to recover it using disk warrior at the last deep breath it took.  the disk itself still works, but not in that housing.

  • Installing SSD in hard drive bay

I'm want to put an SSD in the hard drive bay of my W530 but am concerned about size and the rubber rails that came with the original hard drive.  The hard drive thats in there now is a 7mm drive, and I think the SSD I'm looking at is about 9mm high.  Is it possible to get different rubber rails to accomodate a taller drive (9mm vs 7mm)?
Also, second, the drive I'm looking at is the Samsung EVO 500 GB SSD, which it says it measures 2.75" wide.  Will this fit or do I need to look for another drive?  I thought laptop drives were only 2.5" wide, but Samsung claims it's for a laptop.

I swapped out the 512GB SATA spinner in my W530 for a 512GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD.  Fit perfectly using the existing rubber rails.
Just be careful about the orientation of the rubber rails as they attach to the SSD.  I don't know if I consciously or unconsciously reversed them (from how they'd been placed on the original SATA spinner), but my initial install had them apparently backwards.  I hadn't noticed the two different pictures in the Hardware Maintenance Manual, and this is my first laptop and thus my first hardware change in a laptop.
And even after I did see the two different drive pictures in the manual (which apparently were trying to convey a difference in positioning of the rubber rails) it really wasn't clear to me what they were trying to say.
Anyway, my first "install" had the rails either upside-down or inside-out or something, but the drive itself ended up being RAISED above the power/data connector inside the drive bay cavity.  So although I though I had pushed the drive in firmly and could reattach the plastic bay cover holding the drive down, I had actually made ZERO electrical connection with the drive as it was a few millimeters raised from where it should have been and had obviously just slid right over the connector in the bay.
After booting failed to recognize the presence of any drive, I removed it entirely and re-visited the two pictures.  I then realized that the rails had a proper "orientation", and maybe they were trying to show a DIFFERENCE in how you used the rails depending on whether you had a spinner hard drive or SSD.
So I just reversed the rails, suddenly realizing that it had just LOWERED the drive a bit when inserted into the bay.  And NOW sure enough pushing the drive into the bay definitely felt like I was making contact with the power/data connector inside.
And now sure enough the next boot discovered the SSD present and I was finally off and running.
Don't forget to make use of Samsung Magician software, to optimize use of the SSD with Windows (Win7 Pro x64 in my W530).

  • Z87 GA45 Gaming isn't recognising hard drive bays

    To starts, my set up specs are;
    Mobo - Z87 GA45 Gaming (brand new)
    CPU - i5 4670k (brand new)
    Ram - 8GB Gskill 1600, 8GB Geil Cobra 1600
Storage- 2TB Seagate 7200rpm HDD, 250GB Samsung EVO SSD
    Case - LianLi Tyr PCX2000
I bought the i5 second hand, but still unused a few weeks ago at a very good price, but of course needed a new mobo to accomodate it, since I was using an older GAX58-UD4P with an i7 920.
Hooked it all up, everything seems to be working apart from the hard drives. The case has 6 hard drive bays that are hot swappable, although I never move them. I have connected the HDD to the power supply and to the mobo correctly. The HDD is spinning up on start up, so it's getting power. However the mobo doesn't recognise that theyre even plugged in.
My cables all work, I plugged into the HDD directly and it recognised straight away with the same cables. I've also tried multiple hard drive bays, all to no avail.
It was suggest I turn on AHCI in the bios, this was already on however. I did put it on IDE mode (no idea what it is tbh) and it did recognise one of the HDD, although it couldn't read any data off it.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Test outside the case on a piece of plain cardboard or untreated wood then.
It's working fine with it outside the case. Didn't even need to wipe the OS, and it's in AHCI mode. The bays worked perfectly on my old mobo, that was only in my case yesterday....I doubt all 6 have broken in this amount of time.
I'll try and download some updates for the mobo and try again. Are there any old drivers for the Gigabyte mobo that could be causing conflicts that should be deleted?
    EDIT-
I have updated the mobo with everyone on the MSI updater list, it however has made no difference. I have formatted the SSD and cloned my OS partition to it, it works fine when plugged directly in, however same as before, is not detected when plugged into the hot swap hard drive bay

My WD external hard drive will not longer show up on my macbook pro.  The light turns on and you can hear it running but it won't show up either in finder or in the disk utility.  This happened a while ago but I really want to get all my photos off the hard drive.  Is there anything I can do to get my computer to read it again or get my data off of it?
I don't have access to another Mac to test it.

Hi, is there a way to "force-mount" an external drive that doesn't show up on the desktop? I have a new Hitachi SATA III 2 TB Ultrastar that won't show up like all the other drives when plugged in. • Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter

I would like to install a second hard drive in my T61. I saw a thread that advised I can do this by purchasing a "Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter". The thread also had a link where one can be purchased. However, the page displayed by the link said that the product was unavailable. Do I have any other options for installing a second hard drive? Will this adapter become available for purchase in the future? I want to install solaris or Linux on the second drive and boot from it, I assume this is possible. Thanks.

  • T430s 2nd Hard Drive Bay Caddy not working

    Hi all,
I bought 2nd Hard Drive Bay Caddy for my T430s but it does not seem to work.
The HDDs I placed in it do not even start to spin, and they are not recognized by the laptop BIOS as also by my OSes, Windows and Linux.
The label on the caddy says it is P/N 26r9247, but at this stage I'm not sure is a compatible part or if I got just a faulty item.
    Any feedback?
    Solved!

That part number (26R9247) is for the older T60/61 Thinkpads.  You need the Ultrabay III adapter.  Look at 43N3412.

  • Ejecting problem on my 2nd SATA Hard Drive Bay Caddy

I am having an ejecting problem with my caddy secondary HD.
Basically every time I close the lid, the secondary HD is ejected or, in case ejecting fails, I obtain an error message..very annoying situation.
How can windows 7 avoid to eject it? Do you know a best practice to configure properly the 2nd SATA Hard Drive Bay Caddy??
    Thanks in advance!

Really sorry, I didn't explain properly: I was talking about Ejecting OS side (windows 7 eject my secondary HD when I close my laptop, consequence is that I don't see it anymore in Computer).
ejecting is when you press here
    anyway Thanks!!

  • Can my macbook 4, 1 handle a 2tb hard drive if it fits into the hard drive bay?

Can my macbook 4, 1 handle a 2tb hard drive if it fits into the hard drive bay?
Does the hard drive brand matter as lon as the har drive fits in the slot?
I want to put a 2tb hard drive in my macbook 4, 1 but I am not sure if the hard drive will work.
Can my computer handle that big of a hard drive?

"If it fits" will be the limiting factor. The largest capacity that I know of that will fit is 1.5 TB.
OWC sold this 1 TB 12.5 mm WD hard disk a while ago that allegedly fit your MacBook4,1 so it stands to reason you won't be limited to a 9.5 mm dimension. The only 2 TB drives that I know of are 15 mm thick and will definitely not fit your MacBook. If and when you can find a 2 TB HDD in the required form factor it will work.

  • How to replace hard drive bay fan?

The fan in my G5 tower dual 1.8 Ghz in the top bay - optical/hard drive bay - has started to make noise. I bought a replacement, but I don't see any way to get the old one out. It sits in a little depression in the bay floor, and even if I got out the 3 screws holding it in place, it won't tilt far enough front or back to slide out.
Anyone know of any write-up anywhere about how to replace this fan assembly?

Those two fans (media bay fans) are only given a mention in the "official" service manual.
The drive fan and blower located between the optical and hard drives cannot be
replaced. You must replace the enclosure for these two parts.
Does this mean the "entire" enclosure, as in the tower, or just an enclosure for the fans held to the tray of the media bay?
    I don't know.
Maybe someone who has done this can offer advice, but it seems that there is a need for someone to write a manual for that procedure.
