Hard drive became loud about week ago

Hello
I have a MBP 13(2010) with the 320 hdd hitachi hard drive
Last week the hard drive suddenlly got really loud. It's a loud humming noise, I've tried all the hard drive utilitys and everything seems to be normal according to them.
The sound just came one morning when i turned the mac on.
It just sounds like it is working really hard all the time. It doesn't make any unusuall noises, like clicking noise i've read people have.
So i was just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem as me, and maybe had a fix?

Your AM screenshot doesn't show continuous high disk activity, nor does it show anything using much of your CPU. "Kernel task" is the heart of your operating system; that's not the problem.
From the lack of high disk or CPU activity, I would tentatively conclude that the increase in noise is exactly that: the sound of the drive making more noise doing nothing out of the ordinary. That in turn suggests the possibility that the drive is failing, as they all do sooner or later.
Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive, click the First Aid tab, and check the drive's SMRT status. If it isn't "Verified", you'll need to back up any un-backed-up data a replace the drive ASAP. If it is "Verified", download and run [SMART Utility|http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php] for a much more exhaustive test suite that may notify you of an impending failure before Disk Utility can do so.

My hard drive was replaced last week on my macbook pro.  The geek squad from Best Buy backed up all my information prior to replacing the hard drive.  They reinstalled everything on the new hard drive including iTunes.  When I opened I tunes, i had some but not all my songs listed.  All my playlists and purchases were missing.  I attempted to sync my iPod so my playlist and information would be reinstalled but iTunes does not recognize the iPod to allow it to sync.

  • My very expensive 2010 MacBook Pro hard drive died over a year ago (never bothered to fix it as the dvd drive had also failed so not worth it).   Nevertheless, I finally decided to sync my iPhone to the replacement laptop pc and it wiped out all the music

My very expensive 2010 MacBook Pro hard drive died over a year ago. I finally synced my iPhone to the replacement laptop pc and it wiped out all the music on the phone including most of the purchases. Can I get the music back (restore didn't help)?

Okay, I finally got the couple of songs left on the phone to play by uninstalling and reinstalling itunes on the pc and re syncing. The last version I installed (just prior to my original post) failed to start due to some unspecified error?!?. Great!. But I still couldn't sync the itunes purchases from the PC to the iPhone. Then, after about an hour of googling and reading assorted posts mostly about using google to resolve the issue, I finally figured out that I have to actually download ALL the purchased albums from iCloud back onto the iPhone! There are hundreds of them, and some are not even available anymore.
Why do I have to do that when I originally purchased and downloaded all the music to the phone? Why are they all on the PC to begin with and why won't they go to the phone via the USB cable? Why didn't all the music get wiped out on the phone when I synced with the dodgy itunes I had to uninstall. never mind.
I accept that all my original music from cds and shared collections is gone on the failed mbp hard drive, but how come this once okay experience has become a trauma? Hundreds of songs to download all over again, sheesh, this has not exactlybeen a "That Was Easy" experience guys.

  • My MacBook Pro hard drive crashed a little while ago and has been replaced.  Is it possible to take tunes from iPod Classic and transfer all of them back to iTunes on computer?

My MacBook Pro hard drive crashed a little while ago and has been replaced.  Is it possible to take tunes from iPod Classic and transfer all of them back to iTunes on computer?  Is this just for purchased tunes or can I do it for ones that have been burned from CD's as well?  Thanks for any help!

You had already done "Repair" and "Rebuild"?  These usually takes scores of minutes or hours.
Does the Library on your external drive work from the external drive?  Navigate to it in Finder and double-click the name.
If it does, delete the problem Library, empty the System Trash, reboot, Verify your system disk using Disk Utility (and might as well repair permissions while you're at it), reboot, test the external drive Library once more to confirm it works properly, then close it and copy the Library to your system drive.  When the copying is done, double-click the Library (now on the system drive) and see what you get.

  • Dual G5 2.0 hard drive makes loud clicking noises after installing Leopard

I installed Leopard on my Dual G5 2.0, did a clean install. Worked fine for a couple of days but now it is unusable, the hard drive makes loud clicking noises and the computer slows down, can't even properly shut it down. All worked perfectly with Tiger installed.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks and happy new year!

Ha... "Cheers" is not convincing coming from an angry man like you.
In English PC stands for Personal Computer:
    http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=personal%20computer
    and
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_computer
So a Mac and a Windows Machine can both be a PC. In fact I believe Apple coined the phrase PC, but I could be wrong.
I've been using Mac for 20 years, never had any issues. However my windows machines are very inefficient, it's difficult to get them to work with a printer, much less any of the multi media apps and equipment I use. My windows Machines are useful to me as test boxes and running some apps I don't have on my Macs. Sure Office works great on them, but I don't do spread sheets and such for a living.
I'm sorry that you are having bad luck, or are you making this up? You are a apple rep? Do they know that you are posting on the Apple site and advising users to buy a PC, hmm George Lelapinou the French Apple hater?
So, sorry old comrade but PC stands for personal computer, not Microsoft, and my PC is working 100% now, as my Macs always do, it appears it just needed to be cleaned. Now if only my crappy Peugeot would work after getting cleaned... I joke, I kid, iJoke.

Do I need to buy a larger Time Capsule?
Probably yes. You might be able to get the full backup of the new MacBook Pro on the Time Capsule, but it will not be long before the Time Capsule is out of space.
Better to add a new Time Capsule and backup the new MacBook Pro to the new Time Capsule, and keep the old MacBook backing up to the old Time Capsule.
If you do not want to add a new Time Capsule, another option would be to erase the Time Capsule disk and start over again with new backups of both Macs and move forward.

  • Cannot re-add Printer after Hard Drive became full

Hi, I hope someone can help us, we have a PowerBook G4 running 10.2.8 which we have been happily printing on our new Epson Stylus Photo R1800 for the past 3 months. A few days ago however, it looks like the Hard Disk became full during a particularly long printing run. The printer became 'stopped' and despite numerous restarts of the service and machine, would not start up again. There was an exclamation mark by the printer name.
In desperation we removed the printer from the Print Center, but upon trying to add it again (USB or Epson USB) we now get the message:
'An error occurred while trying to add the selected printers, Error -1'
Now I have been all over the place looking for an explanation of this error and the only reference to it out there was in the patch notes for 10.2.2. Here are some more facts:
    - The printer is working fine in OS 9 emulation mode on the same Mac.
    - The printer appears as a device when you plug the USB cable in.
Here is what we have tried so far:
    - Immediately freed up 3 gb of space on the drive
    - Rebooting
    - Uninstalling the Driver and reinstalling it
    - Downloading the latest driver from Epson (it downloads an aspx file that we can't do anything with)
    - Running the Disk Utility and repairing permissions
    - Verifying the CUPS service is running
    - Downloading the 3rd party Print Center Repair tool and running through all its tests (spool files, cups, permissions) apart from the full Print center reset option.
This has left me defeated and with two options left:
    - Go ahead and do the full reset of the Print Center, deleting our older Epson printer
    - Purchase and upgrade to Tiger 10.4 in the hope of blasting over the problem
I really hope someone can help us as my girlfriend is a graphic designer and has to get printing again as soon as possible!
    Thanks
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

If your getting almst any error when actually adding, the print center is not working correctly.
1)You will need to reset your print center
    2) Remove the com.apple.print files off your system and restart hoping it clears up the error. Even though apple does not list that fix for this printer specifically, it works sometimes.
    3) Re install the OS-- dont copy over, just do a full re install.

  • Half full hard drive became 100% full suddenly! HELP

I have a 160gig harddrive in my MBP. I always keep my internal HD as empty and organized as possible. It was only 70 gigs full this morning, I went out to lunch, came back, and suddenly, the hard drive is 100% full!
I have no idea why it did that, after a reboot, I could not reach the desktop after I sign in. So I booted off the snow leopard os disk, and did a check in my disk utility. Says it's OK.
After, I signed on in Safe Mode, checked my backup drive (using Carbon Copy Cloner), and it didn't seem to duplicate, not even full like my internal drive.
Does anyone know what the cause for this may be? Should I just wipe out my drive, and restore my drive from my backup (I'm a little hesitant to do that at the moment, becuase I haven't backed up for a week, and there is still new work I don't want to be wiped out). Thanks for any help in advance!

Use Disk Inventory X or OmniDiskSweeper to find out what made your hard drive full.

  • Equium L40-10Z hard drive clicks louder than usual/expected

Is a louder clicking hard drive a fault? It doesn't make weird scraping noises or anything, just the regular clicks but they are louder than I'm used to! I'd say a good 2-3 times louder than my old laptop. Is this something I should query with the shop (I only bought it yesterday) or is it part of the design? Thanks.

    Hi Adam
Im an owner of 3 different notebooks and such similar clicking appears on one of my notebooks.
Its definitely a sound coming from HDD it appears since one year but the HDD and the notebook run correctly without any breakouts
But I have already noticed an HDD head-crash on my other computer. So you should be careful
Dont forget to backup your important data because this could be a beginning of the end of the notebooks HDD!
    Bye

  • External Hard Drive became read-only [SOLVED]

I have a seagate external hard drive formated to ntfs. I have been using it successfully with arch until recently. Now when I try to add files to it it refuses. I tried changing the permission back with
    sudo chmod ugo+rwx -R /media/FreeAgent\ Drive
But, it returned a "Read-Only file system" error for every file. I'm not sure what caused this, any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Restore hard drive to condition three days ago

I bought an external hard drive to store iTune audio and videos. The person who was allegedly walking me through the process  to move the files to the G-drive led me to a hosed mess. As in, the tunes are in randomly created folders of randomly selected tunes on the G-drive. None of which are displayed in the iTune app. a Mac minis o/s 10.6.8.  The external hard drive is G-Tech 1TB G-DRIVE mobile USB 3.0 Hard Drive (5400 rpm) - Special Edition.
There is not a Restore app in the Utilities folder. I can manually resort the tunes but I'm hoping there is a quicker way.

Walk me through the process you followed, it may help to understand the mess.
    1. Do you have a backup?
    2. Is your iTunes Library still on your internal drive or did you just go for it.

  • Hard drive sounds louder than expected when using a wacom bamboo tablet

i hace been trying to do some illustration work in photoshop CS5 using a wacom bamboo pen tablet
however as stated this seems to make the hardrive work louder then expected and i am worried that i could over heat and break my mac if i continue to work like this,
i dont even run any other programs well working (eg; safari or i-tunes)
i'm wondering if it is because my mac dosent have enough RAM to work both photoshop and the tablet at the same time and that if i add extra this would solve the problem
the tablet is powerd through a usb port

um i dont know how much ram it has ,but i havent added any yet so what it came with is the best answer i can give to that (sorry)
how loud would the fan sound as the noise i'm getting is a loud hum that starts up after a couple of
minuets of using my tablet and then goes away if i stop
