Hard drive bust so lost iTunes. HELP!!!

Hi
My laptop got dropped and Sony said it was the end of the world and gave me a new hard drive and could save nothing. I have a new one. I downloaded iTunes but when I plug in my iPod, it says to use it I will have to sync and I will loose everything on there. I have 2000 songs that it will take me years to replace. Please help. How can I add new songs to my iPod without deleting everything I already have on there?

Hey there,
One solutions is to copy all the songs already on your iPod into your new iTunes library. There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. There is a very direct method, which I personally prefer, but there are also numerous third party applications, which will help you accomplish the task as well. The link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method as well as a few third party applications if you choose to go that route instead. Hope this helps.
Once you have all the songs back into iTunes, you will need to do an erase and sync, but this time you will not lose anything.

    Hello, a1p2r3.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are a couple options available to you to transfer purchased media to your computer.  Below, I have included a couple articles that outline this process.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
Please note that this feature works only for items that were purchased on the iTunes Store. Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your iPod to the iTunes library.

  • Windows computer hard drive failed, data lost and not backed up.  all music and pictures on ipod, much music from cd's entered into itunes years ago.  How do I retrieve from ipod onto new computer hard drive?

windows computer hard drive failed; data lost.  have new blank hard drive.  Can I load ipod music and photos back onto new hard drive?

    Hi Perilman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that all of your iTunes media is on an external hard drive and you would like to move that media onto your new Windows computer hard drive. The following article has step by step instructions for this specifically. Part 5 in the External drive section is probably what is going to be most relevant to you.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer

Part 5: Copy music to your new computer
To copy all your music files (including the library file that holds all your playlists and other settings) to your new computer:
    I hope this helps,

  • When my hard drive died I lost my itunes library and now I'm being told that I can't synch my ipod with new songs unless I delete all existing because I can only have one library at a time

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • ITunes + external hard drive + iPod movies = headache. Help?

    Hey folks,
I'm in need of some assistance. In theory, this should work just fine. But iTunes and I have a history and it's not cooperating again.
    Present setup:
-Macbook (with a hard drive that is almost full)
    -Music is saved on Macbook
    -All is well
What I want the setup to be:
-Brand new WD 500 GB External hard drive
-An iTunes folder has been created on the external drive
-All my music was copied from my laptop to the external drive into the iTunes folder
-iTunes was updated with the new location
-Everything is fine UNTIL I unplug the hard drive, at that point iTunes resets itself to the Macbook folder. When I plug the external drive back in I have to reset the preferences to that location again and it updates my iTunes library - which is a pain to say the least.
It gets slightly more complicated at this point ... I'm in the midst of moving roughly 60 movies onto my iPod. I have a folder on my external drive named "iPod Movies." I was able to transfer 27 movies onto my iPod just fine last night. Now, when I transferring movies into iTunes I get this error, "Attempting to copy to the disk "My Book" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
Basically, I want my external drive to be my iTunes/iPod drive and it certainly is not working that way. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

Set your folder structure on the ext HD to mimic what is on your Mac - iTunes>iTunes Music> etc - then make sure that the iTunes Library and .xml files for the library are on the ext HD. Then when opening iTunes hold down the 'Option' key and direct iTunes to the ext HD.

You can redownload your iTunes store purchases, but you'll need a backup to recover the playlists.

  • TS2776 Had to get a new hard drive, of course lost all my music in itunes. If I sync my ipod to itunes will I lose my music on my ipod??

Had to get a new hard drive, of course lost all my music in itunes.  If I sync my ipod to itunes now will I lose my music on my ipod?

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device.  Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software to copy over.  A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

  • New external hard drive wont recognized in itunes

I have an external hard drive for storage, on itunes its recognized normally.
So, I bought a bigger hard drive, and copies aññ the previous stuff of the previous one, on Itunes settings I have changed the settings so the new hard drive would be recognized, but NO when I select a song it says that if I want to locate it , I have tons of songs, what can I do? so I tunes would recognize properly the new hard drive /library? without dragging and dropping again and have loads of duplicates aka a mess!
    please help!
    Ed

Can you set everything back the way it was, and use these directions to consolidate your library onto the bigger exHD? I assume everything is still on the smaller exHD.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
And for goodness sakes, assign a drive letter to the new exHD far down in the alphabet. Like, M: for music.
Windows has a nasty habit of changing drive letters by itself when you plug in different devices, if you don't assign one yourself.

  • How do i use an external hard drive for all my itunes music?

how do i use an external hard drive for all my itunes music?

    Hi valleydave,
Here are two good links for you to check out:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751

The first one goes over, in-depth, what you're looking for in regards to "off site" iTunes.

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • Using External Hard Drive as storage for iTunes Library - Problems

I currently use an external hard drive to store my iTunes music, does anyone know why when I copy folders to iTunes library, duplicates appear - sometimes 2 or 3 copies of same song, same artist, album everything. A trud copy. Also, when you are setting up your music folder on the External Hard drive, would you copy from C: the entire iTunes tree - ie. iTunes/iTunes music/iTunes library or just have one folder called iTunes library? Also, when specifying location for finding music in preferences, again would you use entire tree of just iTunes music library.

See Dave Sawyer's post here - it's the easiest way
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1866272&tstart=0
Also, make sure Windows assigns a drive letter that won't change

  • My pc recently caught a virus, which has wiped my hard drive. I had itunes on it and would like to know if my music is stored on my computer or on the net? So if i download itunes onto another computer will i be able to get it or not?

My PC recently got a virus and wiped the hard drive. I used itunes for my ipod. I would like to know if the music i had on itunes is stored on my computer or on the net? So in other words can i still access my itunes from a different computer?

Your purchased music is availble for download again at no cost.  If you have iTunes match service, you can download your matched music.
