Hard drive cannot transfer files?

I have an imac w a seagate 2tb ext hd. i've been putting my photos and movies on it since there's not enough space on my imac drive. I went to go and back everything up w superduper but it won't allow it to run. says there's an error. I then tried to drag and drop on the drive I want to back up to and it says error -50 and won't copy any files. does anyone know how I can copy or transfer these files off the drive onto another one without losing the data?
I saw on another thread that I might need to change the file structure to mac os journaled. (i'm not sure what my current drive is set at). the guy that does superduper suggested that the drive might not be mac os journaled as well. Can i go to disk utility and change the file structure without worrying that I'm going to lose all my data? thanks

Hi phuduc
Caution: Repartitioning and Reformatting will Erase all of your files on the drive.
It's is probably still Partitioned "Master Boot Record" which is a windoz scheme that the iMac can write and read, but can not use for SuperDuper Cloning or Time Machine.
It's to bad that you didn't Repartition the External HD to "GUID Partition Table" and Reformat it "Mac OS Extended" before you started copying files to it.
At this point you have two options:
1. Copy all of the data on the Seagate to another Internal or External Hard Drive and then Repartition and Reformat it with Disk Utility or SuperDuper.
2. Pick up a second External HD to Partition "GUID Partition Table" and Format "Mac OS Extended" for SuperDuper Cloning.
For Partitioning and Formatting direction and instructions, refer to the following links.

  • Can I use my time machine hard drive to transfer files to a pc?

    Hello everyone.
I recently broke my macbook, and had to replace it with a pc laptop. I have my data saved on a time machine enabled external hard drive.
How can I use that hard drive to put my files (music/word documents) to the pc?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sadly, in your case, the TM backup is practically useless. TM provides a backup primarily for the machine to which it is connected, and then, only through the TM interface engine, never directly.
The files are not stored in a linear manner as would be in a regular backup - they are linked to each other and each "file" only represents a "delta" or incremental backup unit. The TM engine knows how to reconnect all the links to create the proper file.
What you need to do is get another Macbook similar to yours, and see if you can connect to the TM backup with TM. If you can, then you can restore the files and them copy them onto a FAT32 formatted external HD.
If you network the borrowed Mac with the PC, you can transfer the files over the network, but in any case, you have to use the TM engine to do so.
The only files on the TM backup that are most likely "normal" would be the original files created during the first backup.

  • New hard drive, cannot transfer music stored on my shuffle to new library without deleting.  Please help

Can anyone help please, I have a window xp computer and had to instal a new hard drive.  I am unable to sync the music on my shuffle with the new library without deleting what is on the suffle.  Cannot afford to delet what is on the shuffle as it not only music.
Would it be possible to burn the music on my shuffle onto a CD, transfer it to the new library and back to my shuffle?

That sounds vaguely like you need to authorize your computer.
Even thought it's the same 'puter, Apple doesn't know that due to the reformatting.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you try to copy data to the external drive, what happens? If you don't see any error, the external drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write in it.
To be able to write on this external drive, you have to use an app like Paragon NTFS. Another solution would be to format the external drive in FAT32 or exFAT with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make sure you copied all the files of the external disk to the internal disk before doing it

  • Using ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from PC to Mac

hey, Is is possible to use the ipod as a hard drive to transfer data from/to Mac and windows PCs?
I see no problem transfering data from/to my mac to the ipod. But I cannot see the ipod on the PC. When I plug the USB cable to my windows PC, it shows a popup message "external disk is not formated. Do you want to format it?".
    thanks,
    Martin

Windows cannot read a Mac formatted iPod.
Macs can read Windows fomratted iPods.
You need to run iTunes for Windows, then Restore the iPod.
It will now work on both Mac and PC.

  • Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop

Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop hard drive

Yes. Just copy all your music to a folder on your external. Then delete the music on your computers hard drive.
It is not quite that simple. If you do that you will end up with many broken links and will have to re-create your library from scratch .  iTunes does not like it when you move or rename files or folders and doing so between drives is guaranteed to result in exclamation marks indicating you have broken the links to all your media files.
If you are content with moving the whole library to an external drive (usually the best thing for most people), try:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • External Hard drive and dmg files not mounting

External Hard drive and dmg files suddenly not mounting. Im running Mavericks on 27" iMac. Anyone have a fix or has anyone else suddenly had this problem? There was a Mavericks update a few weeks ago, but things were fine until today. This is weird. Ive checked in disk utility and can see one of my two external HD's, the one that I back up. But not even this will mount. Ive tried repairing HD thinking it was damaged but now see that all my ext hd's suddenly dont mount. Ive tried several mac restarts.

Solved the problem. My external HD is a WD (My Book Studio). I needed to install updated driver manager and this fixed it:

If you have a WD external HD goto the above link and search for your model and a list of updates will be shown, Yay!!

Many users keep their iTunes libraries on external drives. You just have to remember to connect and power up the drive before launching iTunes.

Attempting to upgarde itunes and I get an error message looking for "an alternate path to a folder containing 'iTunes.msi' location.  I've searched my hard drive and the file doesn't exist.  What to do?

This worked...found on a prior discussion:
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page)...
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
From the link above (near the top of the page)....Under 'download locations'   click on 'download@majorgeeks'
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you just downloaded and ran.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    Restart your computer.
Re-download Itunes (latest version form Itunes website) and install.  It worked!
