Hard drive choice - MaxLine Pro 500 or WD Caviar SE16?

I am looking at four new drives for my MacPro 2.66 which will arrive next week. I will be running Aperture and storing a lot of photographs on the drives as well as using one for back-up.
I'm keen on the WD Caviar SE16 as it is supposed to be the quietest drive on the market, however the MaXLine Pro 500 is much better performance, especially on random read & write MB/s, as outlined in the bare feats article here: http://www.barefeats.com/quad08.html
The difference in price is only £5 so I could go with either. So, from your own experiences which would you choose, the whisper quiet WD or the slightly better performance of the MaXLine?
Or, would a mix of two of each be advisable? If that was the case, wouldn't the two noisier MaXLine cancel out the advantage of the quieter WD?

Thanks for the reply. I've gone over the specs and the unique features and settings of the RE2 and my concerns deal with the RE2 used in a software RAID 1 situation vs a typical hardware controlled or RAID 0 situation which has been the typical use as discussed here. I've seen no circuitry differences on the WD site although the settings are definitely different.
Your automatic transmission analogy would lead me to believe the drives will behave appropriately based on use so I am not sure that is how you intended it to be.
I also wanted the freedom to use the drives unraided when and if my RAID 1 either proves to be less than ideal for booting or that I decide I don't want to RAID them at all. Of course the RE2 are not being advertised as being as quiet as the SE16.
This drive choice is my last hurdle to buying and I am not seeing a concensus which would make it easy. I also can't find the reference to actual performance numbers between these two 500 gig drives when used as RAID1, as RAID 0 has been the testing standard so it is possible the differences in my scenario won't be as great. I just don't know.

This summer, I'll be taking an introductory video production/editing class, using Final Cut Express 4.
I own a late 2009 MacBook Pro (2.26Ghz Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, FireWire 800, GeForce 9400M), which I'd like to use for editing at home, i.e. when I don't have access to the class video lab.
I've heard that I should buy an external hard drive, so as not to fill up and wear out my laptop's 160GB hard drive. Google returns a tsunami of information on hard drive choices, much of it undated, and mostly geared towards pro video editors. Overwhelming, and not that helpful so far.
For my basic needs, are all hard drives more or less interchangable? Is one brand/model better suited for video editing (versus backups)? What are the critical specs to consider?
I hope to continue with movie-making as hobby - and to promote my small business - but I do not expect to put together a pro setup.

Get as big a firewire drive as you can afford, making sure it runs at 7200rpm. Media files are huge: regular DV is around 13GB/hour. Most HD media is transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec in FCE as it's ingested, around 40GB/hour.
I've had very good luck with drives from Other World Computing (http://macsales.com/). If you'll be transporting the drive between school and home regularly, I'd suggest a bus-powered drive, just because it's smaller. Lots of folks in this forum swear by LaCie drives.

If you have the newer unibody style, it's very easy. If it's one of the earlier models, it's considerably more difficult. Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware and find your Model Identifier. Then go to ifixit.com, or powerbookmedic.com or macsales.com or youtube or others and there are illustrated, detailed directions. Good luck to you and post back if you have further questions.

I agree with Allan, and that link is also called OWC, their hard drives are great. Have three of their Mercury Pro Elite 2 TB quad interface drives. They will connect eSATA, Firewire 800 & 400, USB2, so broad reange of options. Drives seem to come Mac HFS formatted, but I always reformat and partition the drives. Service and quarantees are top notch.
They offer a wide range of drives/drive systems so like Allan said, spend some time seeing what the have.

Go to the First Aid tab in Disk Utility, select the external drive partition and read the format from the lower left, at the bottom.

Try and isolate the issue. Check if it's only with this drive.

Can not see TC hard driver using istat pro or activity monitor

I upgraded the firmware of TC to 7.4.1 yesterday, but I found the transfer speed was too slow and I noticed that I can not see the TC condition using istat pro or activity monitor. So I downgraded the firmware to 7.3.2. Now the transfer speed is fine but I still can not see the TC hard driver in the istat pro or activity monitor.(but I can access files in the TC hard driver normally)
Can anyone help?

I couldn't see my TC hard drive in iStat pro until I actually mounted the TC's Airport Disk using the Finder 'Connect to server' dialog. iStat Pro only gives me Used and Free GB for my Airport Disk. My TC is an old 500GB upgraded to 1TB running 7.4.2 firmware.
As to checking the temperature, I'd be interested too. I have a digital thermometer taped to the top surface of the TC and it is reading 46C with an ambient of 17C. The TC sits on top of a cupboard with clear space around, and I am resting it on a spacer which lifts it 12mm clear of the cupboard to give it the best ventilation. The TC has been doing a long (08:00 - 21:00) Time Machine backup today.

Firewire 800 is the fastest and most reliable. Also it's bootable if you hold the option key down on a wired or built in keyboard. Not bootable via Airport obviously or if Filevault is used.
It's only your first clone that's usually takes the longest, it's shorter when it updates as you only do the changes which you can control to keep a pure clone if you wish.

Thanks so much for sharing that. Just talked to Apple support .... MAC PRO apparently has 4 slots for drives, and they would be covered under the Apple Protection Plan. With Leopard, they could be set to back up automatically. Thx again!

benefits. For all round performance I would go with a
Maxtor MaXLine Pro. For quietness and low power usage
with an excellent performance I would otherwise go
with a Western Digital RE2. Both these drives come

Best external hard drive for macbook pro 10.5.8?

I have a macbook pro 2008, OSX 10.5.8 (My model number is MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008) and will be upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6 soon. I am just about to order an external hard drive and have shortlisted from the link below. Please let me know if it'll run well, I was told to order 500GB and not 1TB. It seems Seagate and WD are more compatible for Windows. Will the Sony hard drive work on 10.6 as well smoothly once I upgrade? Any advice on other hard drives would be very very useful. With thanks.

I checked my disk space in my 6 year old pro and it seems I have used 80-90 GB with around 90 GB free space still. Thus 500GB might be more than enough I hope. If there's not much price difference - I could look at 1 TB.

PLEASE HELP me select new internal hard drive for Macbook Pro 2012 (non-retina)

Good afternoon.
I just bought a Macbook Pro 2012 (non-retina) 15 inch from a friend. I think it is running Mountain Lion (has not been upgraded to Mavericks yet), and has iLife on it. It came with the stock 500 gb 5400 rpm internal hard drive. At home, I only have the Snow Leopard OS installation Cds and a copy of iLife 2011 installation Cds. I am going to buy 16 gb of RAM from Other World Computing to install.
I want to replace the hard drive with a 1 tb hard drive, preferably something that is $100 or less.
I talked to Other World Computing (OWC) and looked at the Data Doubler Option to replace the optical drive with a Solid State drive, but decided that for now I want to keep the optical drive inside the computer for portability issues.
I know that Solid State drives are better, but they are still too small, and I want the ease and portability of a 1 tb size INSIDE my computer.
Initially I was going to order this from Other World Computing: 1.0TB 2.5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 9.5mm Notebook Drive 32MB Cache. *'New' Factory Replacement with 2+ Year HGST Warranty*    As of April 4, 2014 it's on sale for $79
But then I started reading some of the discussions online and thought maybe I should get a hybrid solid state drive?
I saw on Amazon the Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch ST1000LM014 It's on sale for $94.
But according to some reviews, this Seagate has a platter that is only 5400rpm, unlike the previous Seagate Momentum that has a platter speed of 7200rpm.
How reliable are the Seagate, versus a Toshiba or Western Digital or Hitachi or something else?
Here are my questions about replacing the hard drive:
1. Is a hybrid solid state drive going to need some kind of special formatting after I put it into the macbook so that I can put the operating system on it?
2. Is a "normal" platter hard drive more reliable than a hybrid solid state drive?
3. Is there any additional driver or special software that I have to install for a hybrid solid state drive?
4. Currently there is no personal data stored on the computer. Can I just put the new hard drive in, and then insert the snow leopard install cd?
5. If I install snow leopard, can I just go to the App store and get the free upgrade to Mavericks?
6. If I want to do the "Data Doubler" option in the future and add a normal Solid State drive into my computer, will it have trouble interacting with the 1 tb hybrid solid state drive?
I would love to get some recommendations about the smartest option to upgrade my hard drive with something that will be fast (I edit lots of photos) and large (1 tb) that isn't going to cost too much. I don't know much about the different brands or options (and there are so many listed in tons of online reviews), that I got really overwhelmed and confused by the info out there.
I would really appreciate any help and advice. I've never switched out a hard drive before.

The boot drive, regardless of what it is, needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This is standard with OS X.

There are arguments pro and con. Bottom line, SSD's and hybrid drives are still quite expensive per GB than standard hard drives. If you have the bucks and are a speed demon, go ahead.   I have better use for my money.   Standard hard drives are mechanical and may wear out over time. But even though SSDs are not mechancial, they can still go bad and ultimately they even have a limit to their write capacity. The jury is still out on this debate.
3. Is there any additional driver or special software that I have to install for a hybrid solid state drive?
No

You can physically put the hard drive in but probably not install Snow Leopard on this MBP.
The mid-2012 MacBookPro9,1 models came with Lion 10.7.3 (11D2097) preinstalled.   It is very unlikely you would be able to install Snow Leopard on it. Historically you cannot install a version of OS X that is earlier than the version that came with your Mac (even if you replace the hard drive).
5. If I install snow leopard, can I just go to the App store and get the free upgrade to Mavericks?
Not via Snow Leopard on this MBP. See my response to #4.

No. They are completely independent of each other; they are just independent storage units (drives) and their RAM does not interact.

Hello gang, although i have read through many threads re: hard drive configs for different people's uses on many different forums (thats why i am here to get it straight from the apple's mouth) that i frequent and contribute to I have read everything from '10k drives only give a slight speed to boot up times' to 'with these 10k drives my machine is FLYING/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png'. The ladder posted by a crazy i am sure . So, If i were to purchase 2 10k drives (raptors are my only choice?) and use one for osx and my programs and the other for my scratch disk would i then use the stock 250 seagate that came with the machine as my itunes, pictures drive (i have an external FW800 750 seagate for back ups)? If i were to do this sort of configuration what would be my benefits if any at all? I had posted this in another forum and it pretty much had me more confused as people were going back and forth as to their PERSONAL preferences and it ran the gamut . I was hoping someone that uses the programs in the subject line or know what the new drives would do to make workflow more efficient. THIS IS THE LONGEST POST EVER. I would go with 3 drives.
Backups: always have two or more so one is safe and off-line, things happen. TimeMachine plus SuperDuper backup clones combination.
Boot drive with just OS and applications, media drive, editing, and so you want to have a stripped scratch RAID.

Swap Hard Drives Between Mac Pro's

I have a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 15" (Unibody - Late 2008) that has been upgraded from the standard 320 GB SATA hard drive, to a Seagate 750 GB SATA 16 MB cache 7200 rpm hard drive.
I have recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 15" (SD - Mid 2009) that has the standard 320 GB SATA hard drive.
Both are running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I will be selling my older (2.53GHz) Mac Pro but would like to keep my larger hard drive.
Question
Can I simply swap the hard drive out of my older (2.53GHz) Mac Pro and install it into the newer (2.66GHz) Mac Pro, without having to reinstall the Mac OS X software?
I no longer have any of my OS X install disks.
Will the 750 GB hard drive still perform the same in the newer Mac Pro, given that they are running the same OS?

From what I understand the USB/PCIe interfaces are (somewhat) device specific. But it depends on the particular vendor in question.
According to barefeats.com, regarding USB devices:
"...Our only concern was that it {the CalDigit adapter} only worked with CalDigit USB 3.0 enclosures like the AV Drive. They since updated the driver to "unlock it." In fact, all the USB 3.0 results posted above for non-Cadigit enclosures were done with the CalDigit PCIe USB 3.0 host adapter...."
So, for example, the Lacie PCIe adapters are "specific". Only works with their stuff. Originally the CalDigit PCIe adapter was the same: limited to use with their devices only. But they've altered that so that it is more generic. In fact, it was used to test the other USB 3.0 devices in the barefeats tests.
So the CalDigit card, at least, is a more flexible choice.

Install new hard drive in MacBook Pro

I recently installed a Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB internal hard drive into my MacBook Pro and I can't get past the startup screen. It shows a picture that seems to be wanting me to slide a tab on the upper right hand corner into the "up" position. I would post a picture of it but I'm not sure how. I thought it might be a read/write tab on the drive itself but when I took it out to look, no such tab. Anyone run into this problem? Thanks!

Place the photo on your desktop. In the replay window (your post) click on the "camera" icon and follow the directions.
