Hard drive completely full computer not responding well What to do
My daughters MBPro has been problematic.
Recently it was misbehaving, and I was able to get about 10GB below capacity. Which really helped. Now however she comes to me and says email is not working and weird stuff is happening. So I certainly a novice at best look it over and the hard drive is completely full, zero space. She I am sure has not add much data, if any over the past few weeks that would have taken up 10GB. I noted thaat she did a recent software update, which may have pushed it over the edge.
Anyway, I launched a Carbon copy clone of the HD in order to hopefully prevent total catastrophe. This is running now.
We could not seem to even delete photos, etc. itunes stuff to help a bit. Kept getting error that it could not save itunes library or iphoto library.
Tomorrow I'll bring the computer to Apple Store for help. Is there anything I can do in the mean time??

OK, it's me, talking about what I would do...
I would delete both "folders" FULL STOP.
There's an article in Apple's KB suggesting to trash anything in the /volumes/ apart from ANY mounted discs or images.
So, o fcourse, it's your call, but my advise would be to trash them.
Considering the number 1 after the name, the files are leftovers from "Free Agent Drive" (some backup software - I guess), therefore safe to trash - there's your HD space!
As to CCC, if you are cloning (as opposed to backing up just a few folders) your clone would have those files on it as well, which is bad and good at the same time...
If you have a recent-ish clone, delete the files from the HD and if everything runs just fine, delete them from the clone as well. If anything refuses to run or crashes (VERY unlikely in relation to those two folders) you can always restore them from the clone.
Please keep us posted, it's worth learning stuff, innit?
PS. Does PS make any sense in electronic writing? I could just edit the text... hmmm...
PPS. Back on the topic. Is "Free Agent Drive" the name of your backup volume? If so, I am 99.9% certain it's a CCC leftover - safe to delete.
Apple KB article (which I can't find at the moment) says that it does happen under Leopard that stuff can get left over in volumes and it's not a fault of any third party software. Macbook Pro hard drive space issue - iPhoto not responding
I have a MacBook Pro running snow leopard. Has got two user accounts on it. Comes up with 29 Gb remaining on the internal hard drive. IPhoto was not responding in my wife's account. I think the hard drive space is the issue here. I have had a number of attempts to get the "29 Gb remaining" changing to a higher figure but those attempts do not increase that figure.
I did keep trying to securely remove trash, by removing some of the events in my iPhoto first, and removing the iTunes libraries of both accounts. When securely emptying the trash, it came up with 27,000 items to delete, and took all night. On re-starting the laptop, the "29 Gb remaining" was unchanged. Any tips to get this figure up, and be able hopefully to access my wife's iPhoto account ? Then try from there.
I got an iMac running iTunes with the libraries there. So I need no music in the laptop.I started up the laptop today. Finder showed there was 65 Gb available . Maybe takes a day or two to bed in, any changes from securily emptying the trash. Fired up iPhoto, had a beach ball for 10 seconds, holding my breath "here we go again"...... then it stopped spinning . The application was then alright. Works okay this evening.

USB Hard Drives Keep Disconnecting or Not Responding
Hi,
This is a long post - but one that I hope someone can offer advice on.
The Hardware
Mac Pro running OSX 10.8 (but this has happened on all versions of the OS i.e. 10.6/.7 etc)
3 x Internal SATA Hard Drives - All working perfectly.
External Drives:
2 x Western Digital My Book 1TB USB Hard Drives
1 x Seagate 750GB Hard Drive with USB2 connectivity
2 x IcyBox Dual Bay USB2 hard Drive enclosures using JMicron Chipsets - these enclosures have 2 x 1TB Western Digital Green in each (totaling 4 TB across the 2 enclosures).
D-Link 7 Port USB2 Hub
The Problem
- USB Hard Drives connected to the Mac are ejected from the system without notice and at random times AND/OR
- The external hard drive remains mounted, but when trying to write to the drive/partitions, Finder throws an error message up saying the operation cannot be completed - error code -50.
- Time Machine: TM will back up successfully several times, before eventually throwing an error up that it cannot create the folders required on the drive.
- The only way to be able to use the drives again is either remount the drive, or in some case, it is required to completely power the drive down and then reconnect.
Re-creating the problem
I have honestly not found a sure-fire way of replicating the problem. It seems completely random. It happens when I am actually sat at the computer, but it also happens when I am away from the computer.
In the past - my Time Machine hard drive has been one of the Western Digital MyBook drives. I also used the second MyBook for SuperDuper backups (extra redundancy). The 4TB drives in the IcyBox enclosures have been used to backup my ripped movie collection.
Recently however - I decided to have 2 of the 1TB drives in the IcyBox enclosures to be TM and SuperDuper backups. I have however reverted TM back to one of the Western Digital drives, purely for testing purposes. SuperDuper is backing up to one of the 1TB drives in the IcyBox.
I am trying various things to see if I can find the issue, but it is such a random event that it is taking ages to even come close to find a problem. Sometimes the drives will stay active for a few days, sometimes only a few hours, even minutes.
Theories
I have several theories as to why my USB drives continually disconnect.
1. The D-Link USB Hub.
Could connecting the drives through the hub be causing the problem? I don't really see how, unless it is a documented case that D-Link USB hubs do not play nice with OSX? To try and rule this out I have connected the current Time Machine back up drive (Western Digital MyBook) directly to the USB port on the back of the computer. The SuperDuper (IcyBox enclosure) drive is currently connected through the D-Link hub. I have removed all the other drives from the enclosures - so at present I have only 2 external drives connected (1 x 1TB Western Digital MyBook, 1 x 1TB Western Digital Green inside one of the IcyBox dual-bay enclosures - connected through D-Link Hub).
2. JMicron Chipset
I have done a bit of research on the internet and there are a few indications that perhaps JMicron SATA-to-USB controller chipsets found in a lot of external hard drive enclosures (including the dual bay IcyBox external enclosures that I have) do not play nice with OSX. If the JMicron chipsets in the 2 IcyBox enclosures is a problem - would that cause issues with other USB devices on the USB bus off the Mac? (i.e. can the JMicron chipset in the enclosures cause devices such as the WD MyBook drives which I assume use a non-JMicron chipset, to experience similar failures?)
3. Green Hard Drives
As I have said, I have 4 Western Digital Green 1TB hard drives inside the IcyBox Dual Bay Enclosures. Could the fact that these drives are 'Green' be causing a problem? They do go to sleep after x number of minutes, but they do wake up when required. But could on the occasion when I have problems, could this be caused by the 'Green' feature interrupting OSX in waking the drives? Coupled with JMicron chipset, could this be compounding the issue?
Possible Solutions
I am prepared to spend money on replacement drives and/or enclosures etc - but I would hate to spend x amount of money and have the same problem. So I am hoping to get some advice on what drives/enclosures are more than likely to work flawlessly with OSX.

I just opened this drive up in Finder. I heard the drive wake up, but when I came to copy a file over (tried various file sizes) - I got the error -50 message.

Please also note that the all my external hard drives have recently been reformated using GUID part. map and HFS Journaled. -
Can anyone provide more specific info when transferring iTunes to new computer. i have completed all steps including the ones ive seen on the forums since others have had same issue. Uninstall iTunes. Reinstall iTunes. Check synch all music uncheck synch all music...When I try to sync with new computer it transfers music, some go into downloaded songs only, if i connect to old computer its better, and then there is the new cloud! I am regretting changing computers but it was time. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just want my iPhone 4S 64g to synch correctly and completely.
It is probably best to start over. These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

Message that hard drive is full when clearly it is not!!!! HELP!!!
This is weird. Got a message that I had 117 mb left on hard drive. Dumped a bunch of programs and pictures. Then it said I had 25 gb on drive. Three days later, having done NOTHING, I got a message I was totally out of hard drive space again. Dumped a couple of programs - back up to 1.84 gb. An hour later it is full FULL AGAIN. I had done NOTHING. What is going on here??? My user folder says I have no space when I go to "get info" but when I check "get info" on all the folders inside (system, library, pictures, music, etc) it only adds up to half of the capacity of my hard drive (250 gbs). So in fact I know I only have less than 100 gb on that computer This is very strange. The drive is not full, and when I dump programs and data, it fills itself back up but can't find out why/how/where. I threw out the finder preferences but that didn't work. I booted up from my Leopard disk and it said my hard drive was full, but I KNOW it is not. What is going on??
Sounds like something is generating garbage. You've got a couple of options (at least) to track it down, starting with one tool built into the command-line interface. Pop open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Termain.app) and type in the following:
cd /
sudo du -hd 1
Enter your password when prompted. du is the Disk Usage command, which will print out the disk space taken up by each folder, including invisible ones. Note that du can take a fair bit of time to complete; my own drive took about 5-6 minutes with only 27GB on it, so yours will probably take longer.
Your other option is to grab Disk Inventory X, a freeware utility which performs a very similar job to du, but with a shiny user interface to help you locate the offending space waster. If you're not comfortable with the terminal, this may be the best place to start. -
My hard drive is full, and it will not let me delete anything... :(
hello, so here is the story...
i bought my iMac about a little more than half year ago and i really like this mac. About 3 months ago, my computer started popping up me hard drive is full messages, and i did not really bother to delete any files. Because i have been using computers before this one, and i have never used up all the spaces before and the computer i have used before had even smaller hard drives. At the time i did not think it is going to effect my usage of this computer so i kept on using it. After about a month, while i was using my computer, it suddenly shut down and when i restart it my desktop is a plain blue background, with no wallpaper or any icons. Then i tried to delete some files, but when i try to do so, i can not even open up my applications or any kind of window. The only thing that i can open is safari, so right now i can only serve the internet, can not even watch any videos or movies online...
can anyone tell me how to delete files right now, because my hard drive is so limited right now, i can not even open up anything, so there is no way to delete any filesIn all your use of computers, did you learn how to recover your backups and have a good backup strategy in place?
Or are you going to need help now on backups, recoverying files (already some good threads to just re-read), and rebuild your hard drive.
For starters you will need one or more external drives, and install OS X on one of them and use one or part of one for recovering files.
You should be able to free up space. Just go to your home account folder / library / caches and trash anything to do with Safari like Metadata cache folder to free up a little.
You don't need to "open" anything other than Finder. And you probably want to boot with SHIFT KEY at the least on startup - continue to hold shift key until you hit the desktop.
But you really should not or limit any use of this hard drive, and work from and boot from another hard drive for now.

I have a ipod classic 160GB and it's not showing any music anymore, but there is still showing 7GB of memory being used, and I don't have it backed up on my itunes, since I had to put a new hard drive on my computer. Any suggestion to find out whats on that memory or to get it the music back, there is approximately over 1400 songs on it?
What is the memory being used by, is it Other? If it is, that means the iPod can no longer read the music, so it has put it all in "Other".
The usual fix for this is to allow the iPod to Sync with its iTunes Library. If that doesn't work, the next option is to Restore the iPod using the Restore command in iTunes, on the Device/Summary pane.
Unless you are very (very) lucky, I suspect that you are going to have to Restore your iPod. Restoring will remove everything form the iPod and put back onto it only what it finds in your iTunes Library, which you say is currently empty.
If you have to rebuild your Library after this issue, by adding all the music back again, this is going to be hard to hear, but for the future, you may want to consider always having a backup of your library. The easiset way to back the Library up is;
if the Library is small enough, burn it to a DVD, as digital files, not a "music CD".
If your Library is too large for a DVD, buy yourself an external hard drive and copy the Library onto the drive. Remember to update the backup every so often. -
I have read many forums that note an external hard drive can be connected to a time capsule, but it sound like that is just a way to expand the time capsule and not the computer hard drive. The reason I would prefer a wireless option is to keep the laptop portable around the house (we have apple t.v. and home theater system that syncs wirelessly to itunes). Wireless would allow use of any device even with the hard drive not being hard connected to the laptop. Are there any options out there or am I just misunderstanding what happens when connecting a hard drive to the time capsule.
I am not concerned about speed, but would hope any solution would still allow back up to the time capsule.
Thanks!!You cannot expand the computer's hard drive by connecting an external drive to a Time Capsule. All that does is provide separate external storage. It will not expand the size of your computer's drive. To do that you have to buy a larger hard drive for the computer. Or you can buy an external drive then copy files you don't need to the external drive and erase them on your internal drive.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion's Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located. -
Hi I have two hard drives on my computer running Windows 8. One is called OS (C:) and has 10.2GB free of 186GB, the other is Data (D:) and has 258GB of 258GB free.
I have just tried to update to Windows 8.1 and have had an error message saying there is not enough space on the OS drive to update as it needs 20GB.
What do I do about this? how do I get to use the 258GB of free space on the Data drive?

In addition to the above information,
If your operating system is Windows 2008 and higher(Server) or Windows Vista and higher(Client).
Then you can use the native tool Disk Management to solve your requirement.
For opening Disk Management, Right click -> Computer -> Select Manage -> As result Computer Management console opens -> In the left pane under storage select Disk Management.
In the Disk Management, for extending your C: drive,
- Since your partition layout as, C: drive | D: drive.
- After shrinking D: drive, the layout will be C: drive | D: drive | Unallocated space.
- Since the unallocated space is not contiguous, when you right-click C: drive the "Extend Volume" option will be greyed out.
- So to solve your requirement, you have to backup the data on D: drive -> Delete D: drive -> right-click on the c drive and select "Extend Volume" -> enter the size you want to add
- Finally you can create a new D: drive from the remaining unallocated space and restore the backup data.

MacBook Air saying hard drive is full when it's really not
I have just started getting error messages saying that my startup disk is full, saying I have "Zero KB" available, which makes sense being I have been doing a lot of downloading recently and have been learning Java programming (lots of Java and Class files), and the fact that 80GB isn't a lot of storage space these days (and hasn't been for at least the last 5 years), most notebooks these days have at least 200GB hard drives in them (that is one thing, that as much as I love Macs, has always irked me about them, very little storage space)
I have deleted over 30KB worth of unimportant files to free up some space (one file being 24KB alone), then opened a Finder window only to find out that it still says "Zero KB Available", if I delete 30+KB worth of files, shouldn't there be an equivalent amount of storage space afterwards? It doesn't make any sense that I would still be getting "Zero KB Available" after I deleted 30+KB worth of data
I am not sure if it's related, but for quite a while, I have noticed that my MacBook has been making a clicking noise, this has been happening for quite a while, though I have been hearing it less than before, and just recently I am now hearing what sounds like a screech coming from the MacBook (mostly when I put it on standby by closing the screen, right when the sleep mode initiates), though I have ignored it, being until now, I have not noticed any problems with the MacBook, no loss of data, no corruption, etc., and now the only problem I am experiencing is that it's saying my hard drive is 100% full even after deleting some files, though does fail when I try to verify the disk in Disk Utility
So is there a reasonable explanation for why it's saying my hard drive is full, or is it possible that there could be a potential disk failure?

Reason for edit: Paragraph Spacing18tracks, a KB is small, Ill give you that, but the reply you typed alone, if copied to TextEdit and saved in TXT or RTF format should only be several bytes (under a KB), I have Java and Class files with plenty more text in it and they only range from 1KB to 8KBs, way below 30KB, though if I were to save this webpage as an HTML file, then yes, it would probably get close
Regardless, it doesn't matter how little I delete, even if I only delete one 1KB file, it should still say 1KB free, yes that is barely anything, but at least that means it would be accurate
My point, was I deleted 30+KBs worth of data (that is a rough estimate, I am not exactly sure how much I deleted) and Finder STILL said that I had "Zero KB" available, I don't know about you, but 30KB sure sounds like a HUGE difference than 0KB
To me, this means that it doesn't matter if I deleted 1KB, 1MB, or even 1GB worth, Finder would still say that "Zero KB" is available, and the OS will still refuse to save or manipulate files, to me, that's a sign that something much bigger is going on, and with the clicking and screeching going on (which may not necessarily be the hard drive, but you never know), and the fact that my hard drive failed a verification, something tells me my hard drive must not be in good shape, and could possibly be disastrous -
My MacBook Pro keeps making copies of a document that I am trying to save. I don't want to duplicate the file. I only want to save it on both my hard drive and my external hard drive. I do not want to change its name for every save, which the computer seems insistent on doing. Help!!

I did not create the file to be read-only. I created to be able to continue to add to it as I work on it.

Sounds like a permissions problem ie read only.
If running repair permissions from your DiskUtility.app does not sort it,

Some folks recommend OmniDiskSweaper to allow you to review your stuff to find possible candidates to throw away.
Even if you throw away some stuff and your desired "1.98GB", then what? If that's the number you need for the update, you'll just use most or all of the reclaimed space with the update and you are right back to where you started.
You don't specify what kind of machine you got but presumably it's a mac pro since you posted in the Mac Pro community. In which case just get yourself another drive or two and move stuff around to free up your boot drive.
[Perhaps you should hurry too since I expect hdd prices might be going up due to possible impending hdd shortages.]
Finally, if some of those updates are major system updates you want extra drives for backups because I always recommend you never do major updates to your system without backups to that system. -
I just changed the hard drive on my computer and my music and videos that I got from my friend will not play because I don't remember his password. Any solutions????
If you are talking about your friend's iTunes password, you are not supposed to use or have his password or even his music,etc. in your computer...
