Hard drive crash - Merge mail datbase

Hi guys,
Very urgently need help!
Last night my hard drive crashed running 10.4.11 Server, on a dual 2.0 Mac G5... I tried Disk Utility and Drive Genius - which both report the disk being fine. But upon startup the drive just freezes about 5 minutes after the login screen. I fear the main system has become corrupt, not necessarily a mechanical problem. I can still access all information on the previous system drive.
I have since started the computer from a backup from 3 days ago and is working fine. How would I access the IMAP accounts of my users to import the 3 days worth of messages that are currently on the other hard drive? I basically need to merge two inboxes?
Please someone say this is possible!!
Many thanks in advance,
Tommy in London.

Assuming default locations, your mails are stored in /var/spool/imap/user/usernames
You could copy the messages from the broken system's directory into the one you are currently using.
There are some pitfalls though:
-You will have to reconstruct the mail database loosing read/unread flags
-Messages are numbered files ending with a dot. It is possible that you may have different messages with the same number, thus overwriting one.
Alternatively:
-mount the disk with the broken system on the running server
-point Cyrus to the imap database and stores on it
-connect with your mail client(s) and download mail
-point Cyrus back to the boot disk and unmount the external drive
HTH,
Alex

  • Hard drive crashed...  How to sync Iphone with New Drive?

My hard drive crashed on my Macbook, I installed a new drive... How to I sync my Iphone without loosing applications, photos, pix, movies and contacts?

You should have a back-up of important info/music/pix/etc on an external source fro this very reason.
The iphone is not a storage device.
Assuming you don't back-up your info:
I think you can re-download Apps from the same itunes account.
Itunes purchased music can be transferred with iphone attached - in itunes click File>Transfer Purchases.
Pix can be e-mailed to yourself one at a time. The photos are optimized for viewing on iphone and will be of much lower quality than the original.
If you enter at least one contact and calendar entry in your computer, before syncing, you will get the option to merge.
The pic and music sync is one-way, computer to iphone.
Unless you can find a 3rd party app that you can trust, the rest is lost.
This would be a good time to begin backing up your important info.

  • Hard Drive Crash- Resyncing iPhone

My hard drive crashed and has since been replaced and the computer is working fine. However, all of my contacts and some very sentimental pictures are only on my iphone. It is absolutely necessary for me to keep these. I would like to avoid having to write each contact down and manually email all the photos. Will I lose these if I sync to this "new" computer? What should I do?

Yes you will lose the photos, unless you e-mail them.
If you enter at least one unique contact in your new computer and sync you should get the option to merge the data.
You don't have your info backed up?

  • Syncing iPhone with Outlook 2007 after hard drive crash.

I recently had a hard drive crash.  We were able to retrieve the .pst files for Outlook 2007 and I sync my iPhone with Outlook for contacts, calendar and such for business.  The iPhone of course, was not affected.  I downloaded iTunes on the new hard drive, and backed up the phone.  (I sync music and apps on my husband's laptop.)
Now, in trying to sync, though, I get a lot of nebulous messages that really don't explain what the outcome will be.
    Box says:
The information on the iPhone "Susan's iPhone" is synced with another user account.  Do you want to sync this iPhone with the information from this user account instead?
(Choices:  "Merge Info mergest th einformation on this iPhone with the information from this user account.  OR "Replace Info" replaces the information on this iPhone with the information from this user account.  )
My best guess would be 'Merge info" but then, will I end up with double everything?  I have many hundreds of contacts and years of calendars.
It seems with Apple I'm always cleaning up one mess after another.  Today when installing iTunes, it corrupted my Outlook and I had to repair Outlook. So it would be a nightmare to have double of everything on my phone and on my computer.
Does anyone have a clue as to what to expect?

On a PC with Windows or with Paralels iTunes 8.2 has an option for Outlook which works with Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 (if it works - see my post on a case where it doesn't ...)

  • Hard drive crashed. how do I transfer from iphone 3gs to itunes on new computer?

My hard drive crashed.  I installed iTunes on my new computer.  How do I transfer my information on iphone 3gs onto the new iTunes?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone.  Without syncing :  File>Transfer Purchases   Authorize your computer for your itunes account first.
If you sync to a blank computer, then your contacts and calendars will be erased as well.  Another reason to always maintain a backup.
Enter one unique contact and calendar entry on the new computer.  When you first sync you should get the option to merge the data.

  • Macbook Pro hard drive crash

I have a MacBookPro7,1 Model No: A1278 which has recently had a hard drive crash.
The hard drive clicks and I cant boot up.
I bought the machine from a friend who has since moved away and I cant contact him to get the original disc
    that came with the machine.
I have a 500 gb Hitachi hard drive from a Windows machine that is formatted in NTFS.
Installing the hard drive is not a problem, but where do I get an operating system and how do I install it.
    Can anyone help...

Your profile says MBP wit 10.6.8 which is Snow Leopard. So I assumed you knew what that was because it would have come with your computer. I don't know what more to tell you unless I know the exact MBP model you have and if you have the original installer discs that came with it.
The phrase should be read to mean the same as "a freshly prepped HDD." This entails:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Note that you must be able to boot the computer from an installer disc such as a Snow Leopard DVD. A retail copy is available by:
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
This DVD will only work if your MBP does not require 10.63 or later, and this is determined by whether your MBP is from 2009 or earlier.
As an alternative you can purchase replacement discs for the computer from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.

  • Can't import backed up address book after hard drive crash

I had a hard drive crash that sent my G5 into the shop. In the mean time I used my laptop and added info to address book, then transferred that info onto the new hard drive on the G5 when I got it back from the shop. So now I have a current address book and an older backed up copy on another drive. If I try to import the backed up info in address book, it tells me it will overwrite the current version. I want to keep the addresses that I added while my Mac was in the shop and ADD (not overwrite) the addresses from the backed-up copy. How can I do this? Thanks so much!
    Dan

Opening a backup will always overwrite the existing data. I'll try to explain my solution better:
You have your Address Book data and your backup. You want to combine them, but Address Book can only use one or the other. Combining them implies that you'll use an export-and-reimport sequence.
To export your existing data, select the All group. Go to the names column and select them all with the Cmd-A shortcut. Drag that column to the desktop to make a vCard that contains all of your contacts.
Now the copy of your current address data is on your desktop, so the copy in the Address Book application can be overwritten. Read in the backup to bring the backup contacts into Address Book. The other collection of your contacts is the vCard on your desktop, so drag that in and it will be imported without overwriting the existing data (but it will be merged in if there are duplicate cards).

  • My hard drive crashed and I can not find my Photoshop CS6's serial number. What do I do?

I originally had Photoshop CS5 (bought DVD), but decided to upgrade to Photoshop CS6. When I upgraded to Photoshop CS6, I purchased it online and did it through e-mail instead of DVD. The e-mail has disappeared, and my computer's hard drive crashed so I have no idea what my Photoshop CS6's serial number is. How would I be able to find it?

You cannot "connect" to it by using the serial number. The following has information from Apple regarding a lost or stolen device: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen

  • Hard drive crashed on my computer, do I have to say goodbye to my music?

My hard drive crashed which means I lost all of my old songs on my compute. My iPhone 3G still has about 900 of those songs on it. Is there a way to get the songs from my phone to my computer? Maybe a way to sync differently? Or will my phone automatically delete all of my music when I try to sync it with the 5 new songs I have on my new hard drive?
    Help please!!

You can't sync music back to your computer you didn't buy in itunes. You'll have to use 3rd party software like http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy or similar to do so.
All the media content will be wiped when you sync to a new computer and will be replaced with the content of the new itunes library. Backup your phone manually before, set up at least one contact and event to be able to merge calendars and contacts.

  • Hard drive crash means having to reload all my software

I have I have spent hours trying to restore my macbook after a hard drive crash and replacement. I have restored the data from a backup, but I now need to restore all the software. This is the part that I dread the most - installing the software for backing up my treo 700p. I had so much trouble setting it up in the first place and now it is probably going to be even worse.
One problem is that my treo 700p shows that the last hotsync was 8/3 but the Macbook restored system was from a 7/24 backup. I was traveling so I backed up the treo but didn't have access to the external drive to backup the macbook.
Another probably bigger problem is that I have made a great deal of changes to the handheld since 7/24 which I don't want to lose. If I understand what I have read, I can't overwrite the data on the macbook with data on the device, so what should I do?
Do I need to install any of the software from the cd that came with the treo 700p first?
Do I really need to install the palm desktop, I read in the Missing Sync manual that I should install it before I install Missing Sync?
Do I need to do anything with Isync before installing or using missing sync?
On my first sync, will I get duplicates if I merge data without deleting everything on the handheld (which I don't want to do) first?
I used this forum before when I first got my 700p and followed the suggestion to upgrade to TIger (I bought a MAcbook) and use Missing SYnc, so I hope you can help me out here.

  • Hard Drive Crashed - Help with restoring settings.

My hard drive crashed a few days ago and after a couple hours on the phone with Apple, it was determined that I had to re-format it and start again. I'm using a third party software package to pull my files off of the corrupted drive and when I'm done, I'll be ready to run the install disks.
I have an older iMac that I migrated most of my data and programs from last December and I was planning on using that computer to bring over most of my settings, etc...
Right now, I'm thinking that there a few settings I'll need to bring over from the corrupted iMac becasue there were major changes from last year (iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, and the Keychain).
What files would I need to search for to update the applications mentioned above (besides the actual itunes songs/videos and iphoto picture)?
Also, is there anything else I'm missing?
It's been a really streeful few days...
    Thanks

Our white Intel iMac also froze and won't re-start; even in Safe Mode. Safe Mode accepts pass word; but the restart still alternates between blue and white screen with inoperative title bar and spinning B/W asterisk. The hard drive can be seen on other Intel iMac via Target Mode; but before I do clean install of O/S 10.4.4 and upgrade to 10.4.10 I want to ensure I don't lose preferences, settings etc.
I also don't know what caused the freeze; when I imported the entire HD to an AL iMac; the AL began to display the same problem. Does not Apple software solve this; must I go to third party software?
Apple tech support seems swamped with Leopard and iPhone callers; help here is appreciated.
    Mike

  • My hard drive crashed and need music off of iphone to computer

Hi, ok so my hard drive crashed and i lost all my music.  I toke the computer in and the tech guys supposedly saved all my info on my external hard drive but for some reason i can not get my music back to itunes so i can restore everything.  So my question is if there is anyway to get my info off of my iphone back to my computer

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod/iphone.  Without syncing :  File>Transfer Purchases
Make sure you have authorized the computer to your account first.
If you sync contacts and calendars to a blank computer, then they will be erased as well.  Another reason why always maintaining a backup is critical.
You can enter one unique contact and calendar entry on your computer and when you first sync you should get the option to merge.
As soon as you do this, make a backup copy of your computer and maintain it.

  • Initial Hard Drive Crash

Sorry to hear of all the bad luck with your new laptop. I will ask for an Escalation of your issue. It will likely be Monday but someone should contact you via PM here for more information. To check your PM inbox you must be logged in, then click on the little envelope icon at top right of the page.

I initially had to ship my laptop to HP Service Center because my hard drive crashed. When I received my laptop back, I checked my system and saw that the hp tech did not install the 1 TB Hybird Hard Drive that I paid extra for when I had my laptop custom built.
HP mailed me the correct Hard Drive and sent a tech to my house to install. The tech installed the hard drive. However, the operating system would not install onto the newly installed drive. Also, the tech damaged my keyboard when installing the drive. They up and down arrows did not work.
I had to ship my laptop back to HP Service Center in TN. I specifically wrote on the form, please install operating system onto the newly installed 1 TB Hybird Hard Drive.
Once I received my laptop back from HP Service Center in TN, my keyboard up and down arrows were working, however my laptop will not charge at all. To add insult to injury, they replaced the newly 1 TB hybird hard drive that the tech (home repair) installed into my laptop.
How do I know this.. Well for one when I logged on my system was asking for an update from my wireless printer. Second, I went into systems and
Clicked onto hard drive and the HD that was installed was the same drive that HP installed after my original 1 TB Hybird Hard drive crashed.
Yes, they fixed my keyboard, but in doing so damaged the power connector located on the mothetboard. They took out the hybird hard drive that I paid extra money for during customizing my laptop.
So now HP is going to mail me a new battery and power plug, upon my request because I did not want to send my laptop back to the HP Service Center in TN.
I asked for a refund and if course they said it was past the 30 days. I just purchased my laptop in June, and I'm having all these problems.
Is there an investigative unit, a corporate officer that is above escalations department!!!
I am so disappointed and disgusted with HP and their service center. I feel like I need legal representation.

  • I need to install photoshop cs4 extended from a disk to a new computer because my old computer had a hard drive crash. There is no serial number on the back of the case.  How can I obtain a usable serial number?

I have to install Photoshop CS4 extended on a new computer from a disk because my old computer had a hard drive crash.  There is no serial number on the back of the case.  How can I obtain a usable serial number?

    Find your serial number quickly
You can activate software without following up and registering it... at least that was the case in the past.  The serial number is normally located on the disc case or a box inside the main box.  If you did not purchase the disc from Adobe then it is possible you would have dealt with a redemption code, in which case it would have been up to you to keep a record of the serial number, especially if you did not follow up and register the software.
