Hard Drive Crash/Multiple Questions re: iPod

iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)
My iBook crashed last week and I've been trying to put the pieces back together after re-installing all the software.
I have a Maxtor External Hard Drive, however something is messed up and so most photos in iPhoto are now only in thumbnail format and my video clips are gone. (See posts in iPhoto discussion group.) I have the photos on my 30G video iPod. I also have some video clips on the iPod that I had copied to iTunes and "converted to iPod."
My music fortunately was saved in the Maxtor External Hard Drive, so my iTunes library appears to be back to normal except for the loss of playlists. Same with the video clips in the iTunes Movie file.
I have a couple questions that I have not found answers to in this discussion group:
1. I'm not sure if my photos in the iPod were thumbnails or full resolution. Which is the default option? Would I have had to choose this option? I only vaguely recall this. How would I find out?
2. It sounds like my iPod is not going to recognize my computer as my own. Is this true? Does this automatically happen when re-installing the software? Or does it have to do with the user name on the account? I inadvertently gave the computer user account a different name when I re-installed. (Before it was my husband's name and now it is a combination of mine and his.)
Before my troubles began, I had the iPod enabled for disk use and it would automatically open iTunes when plugged in and automatically sync music, photos, contacts, and notes.
I, too, am afraid of what will happen when I hook up my iPod to my computer. I need to know the best course of action so that I don't lose the photos I have. I'd like to be able to transfer them to the computer if possible but also keep them on the iPod, and to be able to sync my music to the iPod as I make changes to my music library.

You have to choose the option to copy full resolution copies. If your iPod is enabled for disk use as you've said below then when you click on the iPod icon on your desktop you see a sub folder for your full resolution copies in the Photo folder

Because you erased your iTunes library when you reinstalled OS X the iPod now sees a different one when it connects. Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs and photos etc. from your iPod.

You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. There are various programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. iPodCopy will also transfer songs and playlists, if you search the internet you can find more:

Hard Drive Crashes (multiple on same Macbook)

Hi!
Ok so in July the first hard drive on my son's Macbook crashed. And not just a simple crash. It just clicked and sputtered, and was completely dead. Did not show up in DiskUtility when I booted from the CD, nor could I read it using anything I cold find after putting it in an external enclosure.
It was the 60GB Seagate that came with it.
Now this afternoon, the exact same thing has happened again with a replacement 160GB Seagate drive. A physical failure again.
Now, I could see that maybe Seagate had a bad lot, but it seems highly unlikely that I would get 2 bad drives. My daughters Macbook has had no problems at all, and they were bought the same day.
So before I replace it (again) with a Hitachi, I need to know if anyone thinks there could be something the Macbook is doing to cause these failures? It seems really bizarre that this has happened twice.

The seagate hard drives in early macbooks have a known fault so that should explain your first failure. The drives pretty much self destruct due to a manufacturing error. Just do a search for macbook seagate drive failure or the like and you will find a more detailed explanation.
Your second drive failure could be down to handling of the machine maybe. I know you are technically supposed to put the macbook to sleep before moving it to avoid damaging the hard drive or like others have said it could just be bad luck. If you changed the hard drive yourself it may well be under warranty.

Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:

Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive

Hard Drive Crash--How to import IPod Songs???

If anyone can help...
My HD crashed and got replaced. All my music is on my IPod. I cannot figure out how to get the music from the IPod into my new ITunes...I can't save it as a file or CD since it's all gone from the dead HD.

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

Ipod to Itunes reload after hard drive crash

My hard drive crashed and now my ipod is correct and the backup I reloaded onto itunes does not match. How do I get itunes to match my ipod? I do not really want to recreate all the playlists as that would take a great deal of time.Thanks

If you do a Google search on "ipod transfer" you will see relevant links. Basically, you have to use a third-party utility to transfer song files from iPod to computer. Some of the links will be "how to" articles.

Help! I'm a newbie to this site, so I don't know if this question has been asked before, so please forgive me if it's been posted 1,000 times! My hard drive crashed so I had to have everything reinstalled on my laptop. I've got iTunes back, but it won't allow me to transfer my songs from my iPod into iTunes- I know Apple doesn't want people sharing their iPod libraries with each other so that we'll all still pay for songs, but I don't want to lose everything on my iPod or have to pay for the songs I bought again to get them back into iTunes. Is there any way I can get iTunes to download the songs back into it from my iPod? I heard of Senuti, but that only works for MAC users, and I'm on Windows XP. Any suggestions? TIA!

1) Make sure you can view hidden files. In MY computer go to tools>folder options>view>show hidden files and folders.
2) Windows should see the ipod and your music should be on your ipod in several hidden folders. To be safe I would copy it all to say your desktop.
3) Install Itunes http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and the Ipod updater http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ (if you don't already have it installed)
After that drag the copied folder to Itunes (drag and drop or in Itunes (File>add folder to library)
4) Plug ipod back in Itunes should see it and want to delete the contents say yes as it should all now be in your library.
YOu may need to authorise Itunes music store again by playing one of the purchased songs and than logging into your account.

No backup is a huge mistake.

When I plug my iPod into my computer, it asks if I want to sync my (empty) iTunes account to my (full) iPod, but doesn't give me the option to put my iPod music onto my empty iTunes account. All I want to do is put my iPod's music back into my iTunes account, but can't figure out how to do it. I had some music backed up, but when I put it into iTunes, it won't play the songs (has an ! next to it) even though I purchased the songs from iTunes. I've tried authorizing my account, but nothing brings my old account back. Any help would be appreciated.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just this reason.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

IPod hard drive crashing problems

Sorry this is going to be long, as I want to give some background, because I would love to hear opinions about this:
I had a 6th generation 160g iPod for just over 3 years. I was on vacation using it over a long weekend a week ago. I was listening to music and decided I was going to watch a Simpsons episode that I bought from the iTunes store and was in my "tv shows" section of my iPod.
As I went to switch to the episode, the iPod froze black. I had been having issues with it randomly resetting itself or pausing during songs, so I thought it might be on its way out. - Sure enough when I did the reset it never booted back up. I tried several times. So when I got back home 2 days later and plugged it into my computer, I was not surprised that it still would not reboot.
I was bummed. 3 years is not a long time when you spend that much money. I am broke right now and since I am a music fanatic, with a huge music library I was wondering how I was going to carry on. I cannot afford to buy a new iPod.
My dear father came to my rescue and showed up at my house with a brand new 7th generation 160g iPod on Saturday evening, just as a nice jesture. - I let it sync up, went to bed. Sunday afternoon, I was taking my daughter to the park and I brought my iPod into the car. I noticed that much of the artwork was not popping up as I looked through both coverflow and sampled some songs in playlists. And when I went to try a video again... BAM, the iPod locked up and wouldn't reset, just like the old one.
I thought... maybe this is a fluke, but how strange that a brand new iPod would crash again on legally purchased iTunes video. So after trying to get it to reset, I plugged it in and again, it would not reset and my computer would not recognize it. The hard-drive just wouldn't boot up.
Then I thought... even though it wasn't plugged into my computer either time and I had used the old one for a while without syncing, maybe it was something on my computer... so I plugged it into my wife's laptop and it said "found new hardware" and then there was a new message saying something along the lines of "there is a problem with your new hardware and it cannot be installed".
My dad had gotten the 2 year warranty, but since it wasn't even 24 hours, I went to Best Buy and brought them back the iPod. They checked it out and said "wow, it's rare that out of the box it would crash, but it's crashed" and they gave me a new one. - I asked them about the possibility of something corrupting it, but they said it was unlikely and they since it's a hard-drive, hard-drives crash.
So on Sunday evening, I did the same routine, I synced my iPod. This time, I tried a little bit of music and a little bit of video without syncing my library and it worked... Then that night I let the whole thing sync.
This morning (Monday) I took it to work and played some music while I dropped my daughter off, and all of a sudden all the artwork is gone again... I figured I deal with that later, because although it bothered me, at least it was playing song after song with no issue.
I'm at work now and I was letting a playlist play on shuffle. It was working just find and was so happy to have an iPod back.
Then I hit the menu button and it takes me back to "coverflow" (the last place I was browsing) and all of a sudden the sound starts buzzing and the whole thing locks up. It's stuck, so I go to reset it...
And low & behold, it won't reset, like the hard-drive crashed AGAIN. This is the 3rd iPod in a row. I plugged it into my work computer, just to see if it would recognize it. (I downloaded the latest iTunes on there) It won't. Again it just won't reboot.
Now the first one, I was having hard-drive troubles, and hadn't been synced in a while, so unfortunately I think the product just doesn't last very long.
But now with 2 new ones, it's making me think that there could be a problem with something in my computer. But I can't imagine what. Everything is either ripped directly into iTunes from a CD, bought from the iTunes store or were WAV files I put into iTunes and converted to aac files. I am a musicians and don't believe in illegally downloading music and don't use torrents. I can't imagine what could corrupt anything I'm syncing.
I have about 110g of music that I am trying to sync. And then some tv shows, which I don't always sync all of them. Most of them were purchased from iTunes, but I have a few that I took from DVD and converted and put into my iTunes.
I have called the apple help line, but they want me to call them back when I'm at my computer at home and we can trouble shoot, even though I know they won't be able to help me, because my iPod won't be able to be read.
I would love to get some opinions and help.

Okay, by looking at my previous posting in this forum, it has apparently only been 2 1/2 years since I got my last iPod.

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

- If the photos were synced to the iPod they are gone
- If they were taken by or saved to the iPod gp to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and look at the date/time of the iPod backup. If it is when you synced then restoring from backup should get the photos back.
- If you had turned on Settings>iCloud>PhotoStream, then set up PhotoStream on the computer and get the last 30 days of photos from PhotoStream. You should also be able to get them back by simply turning one Photostream on the restored iPod.

Hard drive crash...want to restore play counts from ipod.

My hard drive crashed and obviously I lost all of my iTunes library stuff. I have all of my song files on an external hard drive so that is not the issue. What I want is to restore my library including play counts and all of that. My ipod touch is still synced to the library that died so I was wondering if anyone knew a method to restore play count and other relating counters directly from the ipod.

Restore your library from the backup you keep of your media and other important files.
You do have a backup, correct?
You iPod really doesn't keep the play count, it offloads that information whenever you sync to iTunes.

Hard drive crashed! Now itunes wants to erase ipod in order to sync?

4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5).
