Hard drive Crash? Symptoms and solution?

Help I am a Apple challenged PC mom who's daughter has a circa 2007 Mac Book. Yesterday, computer went gray screen. Used restore discs but no matter how long I waited I could not get any destination volume to appear. I went to disc utilities and tried verify disc and repair disc and got an error message. I took hard drive out and put it back in the off chance it came loose. Nothing.
When it is searching for disc there is a noisy clicking sound at time. After reading all the boards it seems that the hard drive is gone. My concern is not so much what she lost on there but I have NO money and need to figure out what I need and the cheapest but best way to do it. I found several instructional videos on youtube on how to replace the hard drive and know where to get one at a reasonable price but I would really like your advice on whether you concur that this is probably the problem and any helpful hints on replacing the hard drive because cluelessapplemom here is going to have to do it herself.
Thank you in advance. I have an hysterical 14 year old girl who is driving me crazy!

Is the Macbook possibly under warranty or do you have an Applecare plan?
https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
I strongly suggest getting the Applcare plan if possible, call apple before to make sure you can still get one for the Macbook.
I had roughly the same problem with my Macbook and unfortunately it wasn't the problem of the hard drive, but rather the logic board connection was bad causing the Hard drive to short out after multiple replacements of the hard drive. Luckily I had the Applecare plan and after several failed replacements of the hard drive they gave me a brand new Macbook.

  • Just upgraded my OS from the app store, so I don't have the actual disk. What do I do if my hard drive crashes (again) and I have to reinstall the OS?

The hard drive on my computer crashed a couple of weeks ago, so I had to re-install the old OS from the CD that came with my computer almost four years ago. After dealing with all that, I decided to upgrade to OS 10.8.4 and purchased the upgrade from the app store. And then about 20 minutes later I made the realization that hey, if this happens again, I don't have an actual disc to reinstall from should my hard drive crash again. I'm planning on getting a new computer once I get my financial aid in September, but it would be just my luck that my hard drive crashes two weeks before I get that, so what should I do to make sure I don't have to re-purchase the upgraded OS?

  • MacBook Hard Drive crashed again and again

I've been quite annoyed by this. Firstly, I've read about the MacBook original hard drive that may crash after a while, which happened to mine. I've since changed 4 more hard drives! Firstly, I replaced the original HD (Toshiba), to Seagate, which crashed again. Then I've changed to Samsung 80GB and then decided to upgrade to 160GB, which crashed again!!!
There was no warning at all. It's like I was using my MacBook today and tomorrow when I want to start it up, the HD would just crash. Anyone has any idea what could be the problems that are causing this? I think maybe it's more than the HD itself.
    Please help.

Although it appears that I have copied everything into the music folder of my new hard drive
You need to have backed up the entire library, including the iTunes database files, to do that. If you only backed up the songs and other content displayed in iTunes, drag it into the open iTunes window instead of restoring it through the Finder; playlists and other metadata won't be preserved, as those are in the iTunes database files.

  • My hard drive crashed recently and i can no longer see my web site address in the iWeb side bar

I can n o longer see my web site address in the iweb side bar, how can I relocate it so i can edit my website

Let me start with the general advise...
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

  • Need help after hard drive crash

My hard drive crashed recently and I was unaware that the iPod would not synch music that I added to it from my personal CD's. Because I added a lot of music this way (and only about 80 songs from iTunes) I am hoping there is a way to move these songs to my new computer/iTunes.
I looked at support here on apple.com and I could only find instructions on how to move the songs if I had my old computer working. I need instructions on how to move songs directly from my iPod to my new computer with out having to access my old iTunes/hard drive.
I already authorized my new version of iTunes to accept the previously purchased music and it successfully synched them to my new computer.
In going through the steps that I was able to on the support site it said to consolidate music to the iTunes folder. I was afraid to do this b/c it seemed as though it would only do this with the music that is currently on iTunes (which is only the previously purchased music I mentioned above).
Please excuse the rambling post but I am in need of some assistance and figured that this was the best place to find it!
Thanks in advance. P.S. I have Windows Vista (it's not an option in the OS dropdown below yet).

  • Hard drive crashed on my MacBook pro and had to replace drive and logic board.  When I connect my iPhone and try to sync I get a dialog box stating iPhone is synced with another iTunes library, erase and sync?  How do I sync with iTunes without erasing?

Hard drive crashed and had to replace drive and logic board on my MacBook pro.  After Install tried to sync with my iPhone and a dialog box pops up stating "this iPhone synced with another iTunes library, erase and sync?".  I checked the manually manage music and videos box because I don't want all my wife's pics and music on my iPhone.  How do I Sync without erasing what I have on my iPhone???

    columbus new boy wrote:
    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

  • Palm Zire 31 sat idle for too long and then my hard drive crashed - I have recovered my palmOne files from the hard drive but don't know how to install to desktop?

Since this product is no longer supported by the manufacturer, I hope that someone out there will be able to help me find a way to get my calendar and contacts restored to the desktop.  My handheld sat unused for a very long time, but my desktop calendar and contacts were current up until my hard drive crashed.  I was able to recover the PalmOne files from the crashed hard drive but all I can see are *.dat files.  When I try to import or restore, the *.dat is not a supported file extension.  HELP!  I have the original installation CD. Thank you

.dat are the actual working files Palm Desktop is looking for - you can't import them.
Just create a user in Palm Desktop and copy the .dat files (that have more than 1k of data) over the existing address.dat and datebook.dat (or calendar.dat, I forget which existed on your device).

    Hi,
The simplest solution would to restore from your back up - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4112
If you do not have a back, you can select first track on list in song view, from menu > edit > select all. Next ctrl+click and select download from pop up. You may wish to do this in small batches as it will take some time to download.

  • Hard drive crashed awhile ago, got new one but now some of my purchased iTunes songs are showing they are downloaded but NOT in library and it won't let me download to library.  any help?

Asking for help getting previous purchases on my ipod touch and iPad... my computer hard drive crashed and I replaced it.  My music was a mess.  I restored most back but some of my purchased music is saying it is downloaded but it is nowhere to be found.  I don't understand why I can't get the music I already paid for back in my library.  Any help?   would be appreciated...

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Are you doing this?
You have to sign in and download each iTunes account individually.

  • Can anyone help me to transfer everything I have on my Ipad on to a new computer.  my hard drive crashed and a new one was installed and I do not want to loose all my apps or music.  Please help

    Hi everyone,
I am looking for help and maybe someone can help me please.  My hard drive crashed and dell installed a new one.  I have two iphones and an ipad with all my apps, music, amd photos.  Can anyone indicate me what to do so I do not lose everything when I plug in my phone.  Thanks

Naturally you should have a recent backup of your "crashed" hard drive. If you don't, well, hopefully you've learned a lesson but that doesn't solve your current problem.
If all your apps and media were purchased from the iTunes App Store, don't worry about them. Redownload all your apps and media, then allow iTunes to sync with and wipe your iOS devices - which will also put all the apps and media on them. You'll lose your settings, and any data which resided only on the iOS devices, and of course you'll need to organize your iOS folders and home screens and whatnot. But you won't really lose much, and without a backup this is your best choice.
If you have media from sources other than the iTunes App Store, look at Senuti or similar applications designed to copy media from iOS devices to computers. Use that first, then sync as I described in my second paragraph above. (I mention Senuti because it's popular. There are other options which work just as well, and some are even free.)

  • My hard drive crashed and when I replaced it, I am unable to sync most of my music.  The message "file not found" appears.  I have all my music on my .  How can I upload these to iCloud or iTunes?

My hard drive crashed and I replaced it.  I also switched from ATT to Verizon for my iPhone.  Now when I sync with iTunes, only about a tenth of my songs are on the new iPhone.  one or two from each album.  I still have an iPad with all my songs on it.  I subscribed to music match, but when I try on the iPad it wants to match with iTunes and erase a\the music on the iPad.  I have no music on iCloud when I sign in.  Can anyone help me???

If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows.  That will get back your music.  I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.
Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.

I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup either locally or on the cloud. Much of the music is from old vinyl and podcasts which are no longer available.
How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation) back onto the new hard drive on my pc.
I have been reluctant to install iTunes on the new hard drive out of fear that I will lose all the contents on the ipod if I try to synch to the new hard drive.

No backup is a huge mistake.
You can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

  • Hard drive crash need help with new iTunes load and backup files

I have looked through the posts and not found my situation.
I had my iPhone synced to a PC computer and the hard drive crashed. I had an extensive library in iTunes, but none of the music was purchased online so I can't simply download it again. It was all from CD's, many of which belonged to friends. I now have an iMac. The music I like is still on my iPhone, but not on my new iMac. When I try to sync the iPhone with my iMac it wants to delete all the music on my iPhone. Is there any way to copy the music off my iPhone first - so I can add it back into my iTunes library?

Yes, luckily I have been in this situation.
You can download a free application that will take your music from your iPhone and place it onto your Macintosh HD.
One of these should suit your needs:

  • How do I transfew all of my music from my iPod to my iTunes? I had to wipe my computer because my hard drive crashed and it will only let me sync my iTunes to iPod.

My hard drive crashed and I had to wipe my computer. When I plug my iPod into my computer, it asks if I want to sync my (empty) iTunes account to my (full) iPod, but doesn't give me the option to put my iPod music onto my empty iTunes account. All I want to do is put my iPod's music back into my iTunes account, but can't figure out how to do it. I had some music backed up, but when I put it into iTunes, it won't play the songs (has an ! next to it) even though I purchased the songs from iTunes. I've tried authorizing my account, but nothing brings my old account back. Any help would be appreciated.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just this reason.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases
