Hard drive crashed! Now itunes wants to erase ipod in order to sync?
My hard drive crashed and I lost my itunes library. Now, when I want to sync the ipod with new music I've purchased it looks like itunes wants to erase everything on my ipod first. Am I correct? I've already transfered the purchased music to the new hard drive from my ipod, but can't figure out how, or if it is possible, to transfer the rest of the music. What's my best option to hold onto my playlists etc. and be able to sync ipod to itunes library on new hard drive? Thanks.
1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel".
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore the rest of your music from the iPod not just the purchased tracks. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. 4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

turn the mac all the way off. turn the mac on by pressing the power button. as soon as the apple logo appears, pres and hold your mouse button(trackpad mouse clicker etc...) until the CD comes out.

I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos,documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want tomove those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again toanother external hard drive 1T. My question is: Is it possible? Doing this willnot affect the files that I had in windows? No information is lost? or how cani do it?
Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format. -

I own a copy of Aperture. my hard drive crashed and I want to reoad aperture onto my new imac. how do i do it?
Depends on how you bought Aperture to begin with..
If you bought it from the Mac App Store simply log in to the MAS using the same Apple ID you used to buy it and download it
If you bought Aperture on DVD you will need to install from the DVD using the serial number you received with the DVD package.
If you bought Aperture through a digital download prior to the MAS, say a trial version you upgraded, things get a bit more complicated. You will need to install from the original DMG package file you downloaded and use the serial number Apple set you went you purchased it. -

Once a track is in your iTunes library, you should not touch it except through iTunes. But I guess you know that now.
iTunes, to answer your question, cannot "refresh." If you re-add those files to your library, iTunes is unable to match them with the existing library entries, and will create a bunch of duplicate entries. This is a longstanding shortcoming of iTunes (and the source of lots of traffic on this fourm).
If there are "too many to manually" reassociate, then starting over, in the sense of deleting and then re-adding, may be a good plan. -
My hard drive crashed and I restored my computer with my daughter's hard drive (her battery was dead) and I want to install my personal itunes on the new hard drive. Thank you.Without a backup of your "crashed" HD you will have to download your iTunes purchases again. Make sure your restored computer is running the latest version of iTunes.
Here is the procedure for your reference.
On your restored computer, launch iTunes. Click on iTunes Store on the left
On the right you will see this
"Sign in" using the Apple ID used to purchase your songs, then click on "Purchased" (with the orange blob)
On the summary page that appears select the tab "Not on This Computer" on the right.
On the list that appears, select what you want and then click the "Download" button.
When you want to play your newly downloaded music, you will have to "authorize" it. Don't worry about the lost HD until enough of your computers crash that you reach the limit of 5. Then you can "deauthorize all" and re-authorize as necessary.

My hard drive crashed and I replaced it. I also switched from ATT to Verizon for my iPhone. Now when I sync with iTunes, only about a tenth of my songs are on the new iPhone. one or two from each album. I still have an iPad with all my songs on it. I subscribed to music match, but when I try on the iPad it wants to match with iTunes and erase a\the music on the iPad. I have no music on iCloud when I sign in. Can anyone help me???
If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows. That will get back your music. I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.
Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.

Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. Hard drive crash...want to restore play counts from ipod.
My hard drive crashed and obviously I lost all of my iTunes library stuff. I have all of my song files on an external hard drive so that is not the issue. What I want is to restore my library including play counts and all of that. My ipod touch is still synced to the library that died so I was wondering if anyone knew a method to restore play count and other relating counters directly from the ipod.
Restore your library from the backup you keep of your media and other important files.
You do have a backup, correct?
You iPod really doesn't keep the play count, it offloads that information whenever you sync to iTunes. -

Hello. My old hard drive crashed and I bought a new computer. Unfortunately I did not back up any files from my old computer and lost all files including iTunes music. All I have is the music from my iPod. I would like some help or if anyone knows anything about how to transfer the music from my iPod to my new computer. My macbook has been telling me that it is running out of space. Therefore I moves the iphoto library to an extarnal hard drive. How do I free space on my macbook now? If I erase the files/library (I don´t now witch of them?) from the internal hard drive, will they still be there on the external one?

First, set up finder to show your external drive on the desktop. To do this, click finder in your dock, then click the word finder beside the apple. Select preferences. When the preferences window opens, select the "general" tab, and under "show these items on the desktop" ensure you check off "external disks"
Connect an external drive. You should see an icon appear on the desktop.
In order to move an iPhoto Library to this external drive, the drive must be formatted for a mac. To check the format of the drive, open up disk utility (applications / utilities). In the disk utility window, you will see the external drive on the left. Select it. Then go to the "erase" tab. This tab will show the current format of this drive. It must be "Mac OS Extended Journaled", or the iPhoto Library will not allow you to move it to that drive.
As long as it is formatted correctly, simply click finder in the dock and go into your pictures folder. Here you should see your iPhoto Library. Simply drag the Library to the external drives icon on the desktop. This will start to copy. It may take some time to copy the library to the drive.
Once the copy is finished, you can then drag the iPhoto Library in the pictures folder, to the trash.
