Hard drive crashed - trying to repair

Stay with me; this is quite a long-winded story:
While I was using Finder on my MacBook Pro 2010 with Mavericks OS, it decided to freeze ... Then it crashed. I restarted it and got a flashing file folder with a question mark. I tried to recover the OS via the internet, but it wouldn't load. I thought the hard drive must now be bad (great...), so I bought a new terabyte internal that's compatible. I put it in and began internet recovery mode for Lion OS. It got to the screen for disk utility, but wouldn't let me partition the drive or even show up in the options. Ok ... Put the old hard drive back in. This time it showed up after internet recovery, but wouldn't let me repair it or anything. I can't find a single forum anywhere (to my disbelief) that described the problem or possible solutions. PLEASE HELP. I REALLY NEED THIS FOR CLASS.

For future reference you might want to get something like Scannerz (http://scsc-online.com/Scannerz.html) to periodically check drives. Sometimes, as I suspect in your case, problems can be developing on a drive and you won't know about it until the problem area is hit. SMART checking won't help because SMART only reports problems after they occur....hardly helpful if you're drive is going to end up crashing. Scannerz can pick them up before SMART even detects them. It's saved my skin twice.
With that little lecture out of the way, you need to format the drive, but the drive may also not be recognized by the system because it's new. When a new drive is added to a system, even if it's exernal it may need to have the NVRAM/PRAM reset. This is described and easily done as follows:

After you do that, try to format the drive again and hopefully it will show up.
I doubt you would need to do the following, which is an SMC reset (also easily done) but it's worth looking at just in case:

It's tough to help you without any information, such as how is it connected. Have you done some fundamentals like checking the cables, disconnecting and reconnecting, SMC resets and PRAM resets? If not start looking at cables, don't forget to switch them out. If you're not familiar with the resets instructions are below and don't forget to reboot in Safe Mode.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Hard drive crash trying to update iTunes with my iPod

So my hard drive crashed all data on it erased, have most of it backed up except for more recent songs in iTunes, which are on my iPod. How do I transfer my iPod data to my newly installed iTunes?

If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

If you haven't already done so, put your iPod into manual update mode. If you are using the iPod in manual update mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to an empty iTunes after reinstalling your operating system. However if your iPod is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

Hard drive crash, trying to get back to OSX 10.8

I had a recent hard drive crash and had to reinstall from my disk. I am up to OSX 10.6.8. I purchased OSX 10.8 when it came out. It shows in my app store purchases. Does anyone know how I can get to it to bring my machine up to speed?

Got it fixed! I took a chance and got back on chat, this time with an agent who seemed to understand my problem. He took me through a series of steps Shrink Volumes and Extend Volumes that then showed my total hard drive. So, other than now having to go through the restore process again, I should be good!

About a year ago, my Powerbook G4 suffered a hard drive failure, and every bit of information was lost in no-man's land because I did not have anything backed up (trust me, I've learned my lesson). I was referred to DriveSavers, and after charging me a small fortune, they said that they had been successful in recovering 100% of my hard drive and sent it all back to me on 6 DVD discs. I got an iMac and a MacBook Pro to start over, and I have had some success in finding individual items on the DVD discs, like Appleworks and Photoshop documents, and uploading them to the iMac. However, I have never been able to actually "re-create" my old hard drive and access everything that was there before the crash. There are things like the Address Book, iCal and my notes on important meetings, and the Dashboard (which was full of important sticky notes) that I cannot figure out how to retrieve from the DVDs. I have deliberately left the MacBook Pro untouched & unused in the hopes that I can use it to reincarnate my old Powerbook using the 6 DVDs from DriveSavers. The MacBook Pro is currently a blank slate, and I'd like to know if there any way that I can use the DVDs from DriveSavers to make the MacBook Pro a carbon copy of the old Powerbook, with the same files and hard drive, etc.? Is this even possible? In the past I was referred to the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106941#2c about a manual backup and restore. I tried it, but it was unsuccessful. You don't need to have Lightroom 3 and 4 installed on your computer to install Lightroom 5. Just install Lightroom 5 and input your serial number for 3 in the previous version box and your serial number for 5 in the upgrade box.

Make sure you have cookies enabled and clear your cache. If it continues to fail try using a different browser.
You can also download the trial version of the software thru the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.

You won't be able to install your original Acrobat 7 at all, or use your original serial number. The server which used to allow this was switched off.
But assuming you have a compatible system, like Mac OS 5 or Windows XP, licensed users of Acrobat 7 can download a replacement and get a replacement serial number.

This is a directory issue that Disk Utility cannot fix. Although it manifests itself as a software issue sometimes it may be hardware based. See DiskUtility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing avolume http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1901?viewlocale=en_US". You can try using a utility like TechTool Pro, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior to repair and replace the directory. Another option would be to use the Archive and Install feature to reinstall. If the problem returns after correction you may have a failing or failed HDD.

What version of PS? If it's CC, just reinstall the CC application manager then PS and sign in. For an earlier version you will need to call Abobe to have you S/N reset.

I used a program called sharepod when my hard drive crashed. it lets you add all the songs from your ipod/phone/etc back onto your pc.
