Hard Drive DEAD for the THIRD TIME.... New Computer??

I've had this Toshiba 1 1/2 years. During that time, the hard drive has been replaced twice and is now having to be replaced a third time.
That's not all the problems it is having! It has always overheated and had to be shut down. It runs very very slow and when I try to get on the internet, I get error messages. I've gotten hundreds of error messages daily!! Tech support keeps you on the phone for hours on end, with NO answers.
Tech support also tells you one thing but does nothing!
I'm NOW being FORCED to rent a computer since my piece of junk has been down ONCE AGAIN for almost a week. The latest is that Toshiba told me they are sending me a box so that I can send the computer in BUT guess what?? No box. No answers when I call them back, they just put me on hold for another 2 hours, 3 hours, don't know!! I'm STILL on hold!!!
WARNING!! Don't buy a Toshiba! I know that I won't EVER make that mistake AGAIN!!!

I have had the same issue and after today they will not fix my comp and it is the hard drive tried to tell me it was something else and it is not so they wont honor warranty so I just went and bought a new comp i have no choice I am a full online student and already missed days and all my work. I would never buy one again and my comp only 2 weeks old brand new had first hard drive burn up it not even a year old and mother board shot and hard drive gone again and they will not fix it. Good luck.

  • 500GB Hard drive failure - for the 4th time

Ok, So i bought a macbook pro from Apple in about may 2010. It is a 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRM SuperDrive 8X DL.
Since then the hard drive has failed 3 times and now it has failed for the 4th time this morning.
I've complained to Apple and other than being made to feel like I'm the one causing a nuisance - Apple have told me repeatedly that my experience is unique and there are no known issues with their 500GB drive.
Has anyone else experienced drive failures?
    Jason
I'd be interested in hearing from you: [email protected]

This sounds to me more like the problem may be with the interface between the motherboard and the HD.
I'd be strongly inclined to insist on a replacement MBP as you're still in warranty.
At the very least, get the complaint escalated beyond the shoploor level.

  • IMac hard drive dies for the second time... I think?!

    Hello,
My iMac has been behaving strangely for days now, constantly freezing and hanging. I've performed two clean installs of OS X 10.5, and one archive and install (and I'm doing another of them now). I think I better tell you what's been happening / happened to it:
First off you need to know that about 2-3 months ago it was sent off to Apple and had it's hard drive replaced under warranty, before that happened it was hanging for a day or so too, so when this started happening I was understandably worried - I quickly backed up the few things that weren't included in my regular TM backup.
Basically, it had been acting sluggishly and freezing for a few days so I decided to do an archive and install - it did nothing to help. Even so, the hardware test on the install DVD said that everything was fine (I ran permissions repair and disk repair in disk utility, as well as resetting the NVRAM, PRAM, and anything else I could think of).
By this point I was pretty much resigned to the fact that it was a hardware issue, but then I decided to boot into Windows 7 to see if it was still okay; it was. This seemed funny to me, because if something was physically wrong with it, shouldn't it affect the Boot Camp partition as well as the OS X one?
As it wasn't I figured that the Macintosh HD partition must be corrupted or something like that, so I proceeded to do a clean install and erase everything. After doing this it worked great, faster than it'd been in months! Unfortunately, after I'd updated everything back to 10.5.6 and installed my programmes / moved my files over it started behaving strangely again. Thus I came to the conclusion that there was some kind of corrupted file in my user folder / system library.
So rather than hunt it down I simply did another clean install. Once again everything was fine. I was much more careful about what I moved over, sticking to what I deemed 'safe' programmes; things like Adium, iLife / iWork, and Coversutra. I even updated everything (not via software update, but by downloading the packages directly from Apple). This seemed to go okay, and everythings' been fine for a few days but now it just completely won't work. Nothing changed since about 10 hours ago when it was still working. The last thing I installed was Safari 4 beta and some InputManager 'haxies' to make it better (adblock, 1password, keywurl). All of these things were things I've used for months and months so I don't see how they can be the cause... but still, they were the most recent things I installed, and Safari 4 is beta software (although I've never heard of it killing a hard drive / OS X install).
So here we are now. The last time I managed to get it to start it took >5 minutes to boot and froze incessantly upon managing that amazing feet, resulting in yet another hard reset by me. I left it to 'cool off' for half an hour or so and then booted up the install DVD and ran disk repair and permissions repair in Disk Utility and then tried to boot. It didn't work, I got tired of waiting about 10 minutes after starting it up. So I boot back onto the Leopard DVD and find that Disk utility thinks I don't have a hard drive... ah.
But then just to be annoying it decides after another half hour 'rest' and reboot onto the DVD that it in fact does have a hard drive in it, and even lets me begin another install of OS X! This is where I am now, about half way through that install. I have no idea why it is doing all this stuff, but I'm just glad I backup. I seriously doubt there is anything I can do to fix it myself (if anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it?), and am loath to send it into Apple over Easter as I have a feeling it will take an abnormally long time to come back to me thanks to the holiday season.
If I do though, and they decide it is the hard drive do I have any chance of getting a whole new iMac as I really don't trust this one? This hard drive is brand new, replaced by them just a couple of months ago. And if it's not and the find that it works fine (which I'm sure it will after a clean install with nothing on there), that doesn't mean anything as, as soon as I use it and put anything on there - Bam! There it does again, and the truth is is really shouldn't be doing that kind of thing anyway. So really is there any chance they'll just replace it, because, while worth much less, they repaired my iPod a minor problem, but as it simply came back a few months later they just gave me a new one (a Classic no less, when it had been a 5.5G Video)... do they do the same kind of thing with Macs?
As really in summery, something is seriously wrong with my iMac - most likely the hard drive - and I have no idea how to fix it, even after trying everything I can think of. If someone has some brilliant idea that'll fix it I'll be glad to give it a go as I really have nothing to loose as all my data is safely tucked away on my Time Capsule, and I'll probably have to take it into Apple after Easter Sunday anyway (do I have any chance of convincing them to just give me a new one, and if they do, do that kinda thing how does it work, eg. mine is the top of the line 2007 model - 2.8ghz, 256mb, 500GB, 24" - will they replace it with the middle one that is closest to the specs of my old one, or the new top of the line that is closest to mine it terms of how much I paid for it compared to the new one?).
Sorry for the incredibly long question, and if it you read it all, or even just skimmed it thank you very much, any ideas / suggestions are appreciated,
    Sam.
** If it makes any difference, my 4GB of RAM (2x2GB) is from Crucial, but I've been running that RAM for ~6 months no problems and the hardware test says it's fine.

My clean install worked out alright, although I don't think it really fixed anything, rather gave me a couple more days of use 'till I have to send it in. Someone please help my get it running properly again...

  • How do I copy the entire contents of my laptops failing hard drive to copy back onto a new computer.

How do I copy the entire contents of my laptops failing hard drive to copy back onto a new computer.

If the drive has failed the only way to get any data off it is to send it to a Data Recovery company. Which is very expensive and no guaranty they will be able to retrieve any data.
That is why Apple has included a system to backup your Mac on a regular basis, Time Machine. Also there are other Apps to do basically the same thing by Cloning your internal drive to an external drive. Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper. Along with using Disk Utility to Image the internal drive to an external drive.
Sorry to tell you but if the drive has really failed your Data is gone unless you pay a large sum of money to one of the Data recovery companies.

  • No video, high fan noise on startup, for the THIRD TIME

For the third time in slightly less than three years, I have encountered the same crippling problem with my iBook G4 (1 GHz, June 2004 vintage). In essence, the screen will abruptly go black while in use (not screensaver) and no amount of keyboard/mouse activity will reactivate the display. If I power off by holding down the power button then restart, the screen stays black and the fans come on full speed.
Despite a bit of confusion on the details, this sounds like the problem described on the webpages below. In essence the Danish government has issued a finding that there is a design flaw which allows excessive logic board flexing, which in turn causes logic board failure.
This is, as I said above, the third time I have encountered this failure in less than three years. Worse, they seem to be coming closer together. The first was after about 1.5 years, the second 9 months later, and now seven months after the second repair. Since I didn't get Apple Care, paying for a third repair out of pocket would bring my repair bill up to the cost of a new iBook.
I do not abuse my iBook, and since the second repair I have been very careful with my iBook. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting Apple to acknowlege the problem or who I can appeal to? Apple's website doesn't seem to offer any e-mail tech support options and I'd rather not sit on hold for an age (again) if it can be avoided. While I don't want to abandon my iBook or Apple, I may be forced to if I can't rely on the hardware.
    Thanks

iBook G4 1GHz (early 2004)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   blank screen, high fan noise on start

Well it doesn't sound like the Danish power problem since it will start up.
The ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 4x AGP graphics processor chips in these iBooks have been problematic. Usually it's the reball problem and it can be reballed for ~ $78. I've done 4 this year and they work just great. A cheap way to get nice laptops. If they respond to the "shim fix" then reballing will work.
A more troubling problem is with the 9200 chip itself. My reballer says that this chip is in itself the cause of some of these problems. He knows it since it's also used in IBMs, Compaqs and many other laptops and he's seen a lot of failures. My only failed reball was a 9200. I have a line on a replacement board or finding the chip in a broken PC.

  • Is there a faster hard drive available for the 1.83Ghz Dual Core MacMini?

Is there a faster hard drive available for the 1.83Ghz Dual Core MacMini? Since this is the slowest component of the whole system is there a way to upgrade to something faster (possibly a 7200RPM drive)?
    thanks,
    Jeff

    Ways to make it faster:
    1) Be sure you aren't running any Rosetta apps or drivers. Watch out for print drivers. You can use Utilities > Activity Monitor to spot the legacy stuff that uses Rosetta. (Make sure the pop-down menu at the top of the Activity Monitor window says "All Processes", not just "My processes".)
    2) Max your RAM to 2 Gigs. You can't go to 3 Gigs since you only have the CoreDuo CPU.
    3) Whatever hard drive you use, keep at least one-third of it empty. Obviously this will be easier with a large external firewire drive.
    4) 3.5 inch drives will be faster than 2.5 inch drives -- even at the same RPM. So again, external will be the way to go, since Minis can only take 2.5 inch internals.
If you want an external that stacks under the Mini, some examples are here:
    http://www.123macmini.com/accessories/guide/enclosures.html
(The NewerTech and WiebeTech models appear to have good reputations, though I have no personal experience with them.)
But again, all of the factors I mention above will affect performance.

  • 4G OUT AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME

HAPPENED AGAIN AT WORK! I am down to 1x this morning for the third time! I am about to return this thunderbolt.

Listen if the 4G doesn't work when it should, there are several things you can do to "reset" it. I work at a Verizon premium retail store in Englewood and I've come across a lot of people who had similar problems.
-Complete reboot by holding power button.
-Turn off mobile network and back on.
-Switch to 3G only (CDMA Auto PRL only), then back to 4G again. This will reconnect to 4G from scratch and usually fixes up any connectivity issue I have.
-Downloading the current update might help as there is a new update available.
-It could just be that the location you are in has poor 4G connectivity. It's proven now that the Thunderbolt is capable of the fastest speed in downloading than any other mobile carriers with 4G network. It doesn't matter if T-Mobile has the "largest," when they are producing around 15-25mb while Verizon's go over 30 easily. I max out in the speedtest, which is a lot better than my own computer (a step below T1).
The phone is capable of it. If it can't connect where you work, then it's just best to accept that you won't really receive great 4G until Verizon has completely upgraded nationwide 4G.
You can't blame Verizon when the simple fact is that you won't get 4G service in many locations. At least not yet. If you DO get perfect 4G connection but you're not getting it anymore, then a reboot will work perfectly fine. If not, then it's a problem with the 4G SIM card. Call the customer service number that was posted. It'll help to talk to a Verizon customer service rep. I mean, in terms of what the reps are capable of, they can only troubleshoot/do things that they are allowed to; but guaranteed they have solutions for this. Chances are, they will tell you the same things I've told you in the list above but it's worth a shot isn't it?

  • Order denied for the third time

    Hello my dear experts,
I tried yesterday to order a creative cloud membership for students for the third time and for the third time I didn't recieve any confirmation neither an error because of my credit card. I already was in a chat with a support employee, he told me I should call my bank which I did, they assured me that there is no problem with my visa card.
What drives me crazy is, that there is no hint or clue that the credit card is rejected, it only tells me over and over again that I'll recieve an e-mail within the next working day, but nothing happens. I don't get the issue. So please help me.
My last order took place on 9th June 2013 at noon and my AdobeID is XXX

Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
