Hard Drive Died - After Rebuilding Wiki & Blog Not Working

My Snow Leopard Server hard drive died.
I did a clean install of Snow Leopard on a new drive.
I then created fresh accounts and settings similar to my old server manually.
I then copied over content from a backup.
I copied over the following folders:
/Library/Web Server/Documents
/Library/Collaboration
I made sure the settings looked correct (although I noticed that the collaboration GUI has changed from when I originally created the site back on 10.5, so maybe I missed something) and restarted the server.
Static pages of website works fine, mail works fine, etc.
But when I attempt to go to a blog or wiki page I get an animated gif showing the startup spinning gears with a message that says "Server starting up..."
Even the root web page "/groups" page just displays the Server starting up... message
Logs don't seem to be helpful.
I am thinking there is probably a folder or domain reference in one of the wiki plists that uses an index value instead of a folder path or something like that, so the server can't find the wiki content.
Ideas?

Figured it out.
Luckily I had the foresight to make a backup copy of the clean install colloboration folders before I copied my collaboration folders from my older server over.
I noticed one key difference:
My files were owned by root (as that is how I copied them from backup)
And the clean install collaboration folders we all owned by _teamsserver
I changed the owner on my folders to _teamsserver, verified the appropriate r/w settings for the different sub-folders and propagated permissions down.
restarted the server, and all was well.

    Hi
Please boot unit to Bios using F10 key once unit is powered on go to Diagnostics check if the Hard Drive is getting detected. If not getting detected reseat the HDD & check if not issue with HDD & Solt of HDD.
If the HDD is getting detected under Bios please run the HDD test check if that passed.
Then under system configaration change the Boot order to CD/DVD to be First.

  • My G5's hard drive died after doing a software update while iPhone was connected.

My G5's hard drive was corrupted and unbootable after doing a software update while my iPhone 4 was connected. Coincidence or related?
Attempts at rebooting produced the file folder icon with flashing question mark. It's been a LONG time since I last saw that.
Disk Utility/First Aid reported that drive had "invalid node structure." The disk could not be repaired because it "could not be unmounted."
Is the failure possibly related to the iPhone being connected at the time of the software update and restart?

Possible the iPhone had something to do with it, but I like to make sure the Disk Directory & Permissions are good before any update.
Was that Repair/Verify done when booted from the Install Disc?
You must repair the HD,  if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it then...
Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

  • Hard Drive Died After 18 Months

I noticed that there is an archive message that sound like exactly like what I'm going through, the only difference is that my Mac Mini is usually always running. I came home last night to find my Mac froze. I had to force reboot, and the OS would not load, I then inserted my Tech Tool Pro DVD and had it test hardware, and it said that my internal 80GB drive had errors. I rebooted again this time inserting my Tiger
DVD and tried to used Apple's Disk Utility without any luck, the app could see the drive but whenever I tried to repair/restore or format it would freeze up. My Mac Mini is about 18 months old (pre Intel) and now I'm looking at having to replace the hard drive.
Does anyone know if Apple is acknowledging that the 80GB hard drives in the pre-Intel Mac Mini's fail after less then 2 years? If so has anyone gotten Apple to replace them beyond the 1 year warranty? (Attn Apple Support Personel - If you read this perhasp you reply anonymously without putting words in Apple's month)
Not sure what it will cost to replace it, but if it is too much I guess it would be cheaper to buy a new computer... (hate to say it maybe a Dell $$$ and it would really suck because I've already pre-ordered Leopard) I hate the idea that I may have to pay a bunch of money to replace the drive, the one good thing is hopefully I have a good backup assuming that the crash didn't happen in the middle of the backup, but it probably did since it should have been backing up my system about the time it took a dive.

In addition to the suggestions and comments already made, it's worth noting that despite the large number of minis sold with those 80Gb drives, there has not been all that much in the way of reports here of the drives failing. I would be surprised therefore if yours was anything more than an individual component failure rather than one that is indicative of a wider problem. Not that I mean to trivialize the failure of your system, just that it would not appear to be part of a trend which Apple might be expected to have to deal with. I would also not expect any Apple personnel to read this and reply - and certainly not in any way that doesn't reflect the company's policies and acknowledged practices.
Given that a replacement drive would be significantly less in cost than a replacement computer (whether Apple or Dell), I think your wisest choice is the repair - particularly since that will allow you to take advantage of Leopard once you have your pre-ordered copy. If you have on-going concerns about the reliability of the mini you would at least then have a working one which would be easy to sell to help offset the cost of a replacement system - the non-working unit at present has far less value.

  • Im trying to get my music from my external hard drive to my itunes and its not working. what should i do?

i set up my moms new desktop mac a couple of weeks ago and i did the same thing i tried to do on my macbook but its not working, yet it worked on my moms mac. so i dont know what to do. i moved the file from the hard drive to the itunes folder. then went to itunes, file add to library and clicked on the folder but nothing happened. so i went back and moved the music folder to the automatically download to itunes folder and it didnt work. i even tried drap and dropping the folder directly into the itunes library. it went blue so i knew you could drop it in, but nothing happened. i dont understand how it worked on my moms mac but not mine.

FIle>Add To Library. Select all the music on your external hard (Select all the artist folders) drive and hit OK. This will add all the music to your new Mac's iTunes library file.
Good luck and good choice on moving to the Mac

  • Time Machine restore on new Hard Drive and now my login password not working

I just had a new hard drive installed and they put in a clean version of 10.6.
I got home and used my TIme Machine to restore from my other computer. It finished, but now I am locked out, bacause its not accepting my password. I know its my password, the hint is the same as I have always had. It just won't work,
Since the repair place installed the software, I don't have any other disks to boot from. Does anyone know a way to fix this or reset the computer again? I don't care if the files are lost, I can copy them over later. I just need to get past the login screen. Thanks!!

Do you have any OS disks you can boot from? If so, boot from the disk, look in Utilities, and see if there is a reset password option.

  • My macbook got a new hard drive yesterday and now iPhoto's not working...

I have everything backed up via time machine on an external drive. All of my photos show up in Images but won't load in iPhoto. My OS was updated to Lion 10.7.3; I used to be running OS X 10.6.2 so now everything's a little different. It tells me that I need to updgrade my libary, when I click to do that it tells me it can't open the current library using this version of iPhoto and makes me quit. Any ideas?

    Run Software Update.

  • Reinstalled itunes on new hard drive after old hard drive died and now counts as a new computer

After my hard drive died, I reinstalled iTunes on the new one. It counted as a new computer instalation but its the same computer. How can I have it not count as a new computer?

I have a feeling that the apps will be transferred to iTunes before they are removed from the iPhone. (This forces them to go through an authorisation check before they go back on the phone. This in turn means if you give away or sell your iPhone full of Apps, they will be removed. This in turn helps the programmers get paid adequately.)
If you have a backup of your old hard drive, you can simply drag the App files into the window of the new iTunes. They are in the Mobile Applications sub-folder of the iTunes folder.

  • We bought a reconditioned IMac and time capsule, about a month ago the hard drive died and only left our files on the capsule which could not be retrieved from the time capsule so it got stored as a file on the operating system

Our IMac's hard drive died and we thought great we bought a time capsule to back up the immages and files, except when we had the hard drive replaced the time capsule did not recognize the newer opperating system and would not reboot the files back,so the apple store tech loaded them into a file folder and loaded them to the main screen and erased the time capsule, the problem now is how to load this file back permenantly and watch video's that are stored, when in I Photo when I try to view video content I get a message stating that I may need to download more software to support this format.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • My very expensive 2010 MacBook Pro hard drive died over a year ago (never bothered to fix it as the dvd drive had also failed so not worth it).   Nevertheless, I finally decided to sync my iPhone to the replacement laptop pc and it wiped out all the music

My very expensive 2010 MacBook Pro hard drive died over a year ago. I finally synced my iPhone to the replacement laptop pc and it wiped out all the music on the phone including most of the purchases. Can I get the music back (restore didn't help)?

Okay, I finally got the couple of songs left on the phone to play by uninstalling and reinstalling itunes on the pc and re syncing. The last version I installed (just prior to my original post) failed to start due to some unspecified error?!?. Great!. But I still couldn't sync the itunes purchases from the PC to the iPhone. Then, after about an hour of googling and reading assorted posts mostly about using google to resolve the issue, I finally figured out that I have to actually download ALL the purchased albums from iCloud back onto the iPhone! There are hundreds of them, and some are not even available anymore.
Why do I have to do that when I originally purchased and downloaded all the music to the phone? Why are they all on the PC to begin with and why won't they go to the phone via the USB cable? Why didn't all the music get wiped out on the phone when I synced with the dodgy itunes I had to uninstall. never mind.
I accept that all my original music from cds and shared collections is gone on the failed mbp hard drive, but how come this once okay experience has become a trauma? Hundreds of songs to download all over again, sheesh, this has not exactlybeen a "That Was Easy" experience guys.

  • I am reinstalling Photoshop Elements 7 on my computer after my hard drive died.

I am reinstalling Photoshop Elements 7 on my computer after my hard drive died.  I found a download page on adobe's website for the software and installed.  Install went fine but when I entered the serial number I received from my original e-bay purchase the software said it wasn't valid.

No, I am using the serial number from the original e-mail that I received when I bought the software.  I don't think I ever registered the serial number, how would I check?

My hard drive died on my Mac Book Pro and do not have the resore disk?

do you have a backup of your data?  You can get the discs that came with your mac by calling AppleCare and giving them the serial number of your mac.  For a small fee, they will send them to you.
