Hard drive died, but do i have a battery issue also?

Hello,
Well, my powerbook has been acting funny for the last few months and I think it finally died today. I've been doing weekly bootable backups on a smartdisk firelite 100GB external hard drive. Yesterday my computer was really slow, so today I updated the backup. Afterwards, I tried running disk repair in the disk utility on my internal hard drive, but it froze while doing that and I was forced to hit the kill switch. When I started it again I got the mini-folder with a blinking question mark. Luckily, I think the bootable backup works (although I've had issues with that drive mounting in the past) and for now it looks like I have all my files and applications. I tried running disk repair on the internal hard drive by got the error message: "invalid B-tree node size, volume check failed, underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)".
My question though is about how HOT my powerbook had been running lately. I've been using a notebook cooler with a fan, but it's still very hot to the touch after a while above the keyboard and sometimes I've noticed it's hot on the lower right side (under my left wrist). The adapter on the AC plug/cord setup gets hot also. I'm wondering if the heat was because the hard drive was dying, OR if the hard drive died because of the heat? (Note: I checked my battery serial number a long time ago and it wasn't part of the mac recall.)
I want to get a new hard drive to install (at BestBuy or some other place I guess). I'll look around on the list for recommendations, but I'm open to suggestions. I don't know if it's worth wiping the hard drive I have now and restoring it from the backup, or just assume it's dead. I don't want to get a new hard drive and find out I have a battery overheating issue instead.
Thanks for your help!
Lisa

Lisa:
Before you purchase and install a new HDD, just hold a minute.
Great that you have a bootable backup of your HDD. Good thinking. Are you able to boot the computer from the external firewire HDD? (From a cold start, turn on external HDD, hit computer power button and immediately after chime hold down Option key. Select external HDD in screen and click right pointing arrow.)
When you ran Disk Utility, did you notice the S.M.A.R.T Status? If it says Verified, there is still hope. If it says failing, we'll need to find you a new HDD.
+"invalid B-tree node size, volume check failed, underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)".+
This indicates serious directory issues for which you will need a utility like Disk Warrior, Tech Tool Pro, or DriveGenius. Take a look at Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume for details about the issue.
One of the above utilities has a good chance of repairing the directories. However, there is an even chance that the drive may be too damaged to be repaired. However, you won't know that until after you have run one of those utilities.
Your computer will support a 2.5" (P)ATA/IDE HDD up to 160 GB. Here are some HDDs that will work for you at OWC. If you are handy with a screw driver and have the time and patience you can probably install it yourself using these step by step directions from ifixit. If you need to install a new HDD, and think you would like to try it yourself, post back for additional tips.
Cheers.

• My macbook pro hard drive died. I only have a windows hard drive and an old powerbook G4 which of course you can't use to create a boot disk for my macbook. How can I solve this?

I can't get app store on my old power book to download OS X, My macbook pro hard drive died and all I have is a windows hard drive, still has windows os on it, a 500 Gb USB drive and this power book. How can I get my macbook back up without spending money? Thanks

And what happens if the OPs Mac is of a newer version that came with a version of Snow Leopard above the 10.6.3 version that is on that Retail, meant for Upgrade, disc? Like if it came with 10.6.4/.5/.6/.7? That disc you linked to would not work.
He needs to contact Apple and get a replacement set of Original System Reinstall Discs. That is the only way he can be assured it will work and he would also get the iLife apps which he wouldn't buying that DVD disc you linked to.

The Snow Leopard DVD is $20 from Apple. You'll just have to wait a few days. BTW this is a full installer that works with any model computer that can run SL. Apple used to ship recovery/installation disks that were tied to specific computer models so that a 15" MBP installer disk coudn't be used on a 13" MBP computer. So you need either full installer or the recovery disks for your specific model.
And BTW, I have a 2009 13" MBP w/8GB RAM that is running Mavericks. With a 5400 RPM drive I used to experience a bit of beach balling (think hour glassing) but an SSD has given it new life. It feels now slower than the newest MBPs - it obviously benchmarks considerably slower but in everyday use it doesn't feel like a 4 1/2 year old computer at all.

• Help...Hard drive died! - Do I have to start website over?

Help - my 2 websites are all published and working fine but my hard drive died without a back up of my iWeb files. I wll have a new hard drive installed but no iWeb work on it.
Is there anyway I can retrieve the published material so I can start to work on the sites / blogs or do I have to start from scratch?
Am I making sense? Can I copy/cut from Safari and import/paste? Can I download?
Any help greatly appreciated as I am not looking forward to starting from scratch again!
You guys are great help by the way - thoroughly recommended!!
Pete (London)

If you did not back up your domain file located at username/Library/Application Support/iWeb, then unfortunately you will have to start right from scratch.
You can still cut and paste elements into iWeb from various sources, including the web, or directly from your html files located on your hosting server, or from your iDisk if on .mac.
There is absolutely no way to import a published website back into iWeb.
Sorry.

• My hard drive died but I am able to reach the files on it; can recover myFirefox bookmarks?

Recently, my hard drive crashed but I have a lot of bookmarks I'd really like to keep. I have a hard drive enclosure that allows me to reach the files on that hard drive through another computer. I was hoping that I'd be able to rescue those book marks through this. I had Windows 7 and Firefox 3.6. Any help would be really appreciated! Thank you!!

Sorry, it's been awhile since I have read that article, looks like it is slightly different than I recall.
You need to locate your old Firefox Profile folder.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Finding_the_profile_folder
Start with the section titled - '''Navigating to the profile folder'''
You need the '''places.sqlite''' file. Copy that file from the old Profile folder into the new Profile folder, replacing the same named file that is in the new Profile folder.

• My Hard drive died but...

My Hard drive on my macbook recently died but i have had that fixed. What i wanted to know is can i take the music on my ipod touch and put all of my films and songs back onto itunes?
Also i have noticed that i no longer have i photo or garage band and a few other apps on my macbook is this normal after putting it in for repair?

There is a program that allows you to do that, it is called "senuti".

• I was running out of hard drive space so I uninstalled Adobe Premiere Elements 13 with the intention of re-downloading it on my external hard drive. But now I have less space on my hard drive, and I can't find it on my external.

Can anyone help me?

If you moved your iTunes library by simply copying it to another drive, you may not be able to access your music even if you reconnect to that library, you may get a lot of "not found" errors because the music is not where the library thinks it should be. First thing to do is put it back where it was. Then reconnect it. Then follow the steps in this link:

• Hard drive died, how do I re-establish a published calendar- from .mac?

I had (have) a published calendar on ical 1.5.5 on a workstation iMac. The hard drive died, but I can still acess the calendar from other workstations. A new hard drive is installed, and now I can subscribe to the calendar but not modify it. How can I regain control and make it a published calendar on my workstation again?
Thanks

Hi,
Subscribe to the calendar, then export it (File > Export). Save the exported copy. Delete the subscribed calendar in iCal. Follow these instructions to un-publish the calendar from your .Mac account. Import the saved version and re-publish it.

• My MacBook air hard drive died how and where can I fix it?

I need some help my MBA hard drives died I do not have any clue what to do. I also do not have the original softwere. Please help

I'm confused as to why you don't know what to do. Is there some reason why you can't take it right back to where you bought it? You say it's first gen--you mean 2008? Do you have Apple Care?
If you are no where near where you bought it, you can take it into any Apple store, or to any Apple authorized dealer and they should be able to take care of it, or, if you have Apple Care, you can call the Apple Helpline. Apple will send you a box, you send them the computer and they fix it and send it back. If you have Apple Care you probably won't have to pay. If you don't, then you might want to know how much it's going to cost you.

• We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch. My hard drive died and we have a new hard drive now, but all that the fixit shop put on it was the Snow Leopard OS; can I ask Apple for a download of our other many software programs to reload them? Does it cost to do

We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch. The hard drive died and we had a new hard drive installed. They only installed the Snow Leopard OS on it, and there were many software programs that came with the iMac originally.. now missing. Does anyone know whether Apple will resupply these? I do have an Apple installation disc but have upgraded from the original Leopard to Snow Leopard... so the OS is not quite the same. Ideas? Thanks!

No bootable bakup/clone or Time Machine backup? No initial install discs? If no to both of those, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and request replacement discs for that machine. They're available for a nominal S&H charge.

• Imac hard drive died and was replaced by apple. Data lost but is remains on ipads. Computer address is different so can't sync without erasing ipad data (which I need back on repaired imac). How do I do this?

How do I transfer data from and Ipad/iphone to an imac with a different address then initally setup with? Our hard drive died and was replaced free of charge by Apple, our data was lost on the hard drive but exists on our small devices.

Since Apple replaced the hard drive does that mean you have AppleCare? If so, call them. If not, you must have paid pretty good to get it replaced and so I would think you have some possible right to ask a followup question at the store that did it.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

• Is my hard drive dying and if so, how long does it have?

Symptoms (earlier today and for the past week or so):
-- too-frequent cycling noises
-- a weird pinging or clicking sound; it seems random but yet tied to opening applications or files
-- no chime on startup (that just started today)
-- increasing slowness, sometimes to the point of apps bouncing in the dock forever until I got tired of waiting and did a forcequit, or they just stopped on their own as if they were sick of trying, too. Everything, in every program, seems to take longer. Lots of spinning beachballs.
-- almost certainly unrelated, but perhaps worth mentioning: sticky spacebar and trackpad button (no spills, probably just dust and cat hair)
What I have done so far to fix it:
-- Repaired permissions
-- Ran the Apple Hardware Test (no problems detected)
-- Ran Norton DiskDoctor, which took quite some time and quit twice, first with a general disk error/try again message and then with an error 23005 message. It ultimately fixed everything it found.
-- Cleared out my hard drive as much as possible; I now have 6 GB available; it had been below 4 GB.
After taking the above steps, it SEEMS better. Apps are opening a little faster. It's cycling less frequently and the weird pinging noise is gone for the moment. However, it still isn't right.
I've backed my files up, but I work for myself and have critical stuff to do next week. I want a new hard drive eventually but now is a BAD time to have to stop and deal with that. Whaddaya all think? Can I keep crossing my fingers?
Many, many thanks...

Hi Cheryl,
It's not surprising that something seems fishy if you've inflicted Norton Utilities on your OS 10.3.x. You should uninstall it asap. Otherwise it will eventually destroy your OS. Here is one of several articles confirming that Norton no longer supports OSX. Try searching these forums for Norton if you need more convincing.
First thing I'd try is to Repair the directory on your hard disk. Boot to your Panther disk #1: insert disk, restart and hold down "C" key at the chime. When the Installer window appears, ignore it, go to the menu at upper left and select Disk Utility. In the DU window, select your HD volume at left, click the First Aid tab, and click Repair Disk. When it finishes, if it says "disk appears to be OK" then run it again to make sure, especially if it repaired anything. Run it until you get two "appears OK" reports in a row. If it can't repair everything, you'll need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior, or TechTool Pro.
If your HD continues to sound strange (or, for that matter, if it doesn't), at least make sure you're backed up. HDs can fail without warning over just a few minutes. HTH

Hi, I'm using a Mac Pro here. I am trying to connect it with my NAS hard drive. But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet and it could not detect the the ip address after i input the correct address on "Connect to Server" window. Please help! Urgent! Thanks

I did not say it is not possible.
I said if your company networks are monopolizing both ports, you should talk to them about what options are available.
Maybe you can get the company Intranet over wireless if you change some configuration items such as Subnet Mask.
Maybe you can get on the Internet over Ethernet.
You really need to ask them, and do not let them blow you off because you have a Mac. If they balk, ask them how it would be done on a PC (becasue it will be the same on a Mac).
