Hard Drive Died, Have Music, Want Pics/Contacts/Apps

Hello all.
I am a bit frustrated.
I love my iPhone, but really hate iTunes. My wife and I each have an iPhone and I have iPods as well.
Recently, my hard drive on my old PC died (the one I would sync my iPhone with). I have all of my music backed up on an external drive, but this is my own file backup (which consists of music I have purchased from Amazon, music I have ripped from my own CDs, etc - I do not buy from iTunes as I do not like it).
Over the last 2 years, my iPhone has been used a lot. I have tons of pictures, videos and contacts setup.
I've tried to connect my iPhone to my new computer, but it seems to want to delete everything from my iPhone. I don't care about the music because I can just re-add all of my music (which I have backed up), but I do not want to lose the pictures/videos, contacts and applications I have paid for (SoundHound, Angry Birds, the usual stuff). I also have lots of notes with train schedule info, and lots of shortcuts to websites I have added over the years.
So for the past several months I have just been using the iPhone as-is ... and even though my personal music library has grown, I can't get any of it on to my iPhone. This who struggle has really made me wonder if Apple's products are worth buying, because what they do with their attempts at security is hurt the average user (like me, who uses the system honestly) and they don't stop the jailbreakers and hackers anyway.
So, what I really want to do is see if I can somehow get all of my contacts, photos, apps and videos synced to my new computer. I don't care about the music as I have a backup of that. If I end up losing the apps, I can deal with that as it's not all that expensive to re-purchase a few of them (although I shouldn't have to).
This whole thing is stupid. I authorized my new PC with my iTunes account and I thought that is all that would be needed, but apparently not.
I'm also considering a 3rd party application that will allow me to upload and download music/pics/contacts from/to my iPhone without having to deal with the restrictions imposed by iTunes.
Notes:
I have an iPhone 3GS (not sure of iOS since I haven't been able to "sync" in quite some time)
My new PC is running Windows 7

apps you had to use an Apple ID to buy, so in iTunes when you "sign in" to the store all of them will show up in the apps section, no worries.
Contacts: OK, Here is how to back up your iPhone contacts on a PC. I just did this and its super easy: - Open i-tunes on your computer that you sync it to - Plug in your phone to the computer - open "Address book" window's address book program. Kinda lame, but it works. Its under start-programs-accessories - Back to iTunes, click on the phone icon on the left - Click on the Info, and under "Contacts" (the first one) check "sync contacts from" and then pick "Windows address book" from the drop down menu - Click all contacts - Then at the bottom right of iTunes, click "Sync" It will ask you if you want to merge or replace. Make sure you select "MERGE" or it will delete your contacts on the phone. Thats it, check your Windows Address Book and everything should be there. All the numbers and emails that you have put so much time into adding to your phone. Pretty nice. So, from now on, if you add contacts to the phone it will back up to the Computer and the Computer's Address book (if changed) adds new contacts. Hope this helps.
Pictures/Videos:
If you start up the Windows "Scanner and Camera Wizard" the iPhone should appear as a camera device in there. You will not see it as a disk drive in Windows Explorer, and applications that are simply looking to read a folder from a mass storage device will not work with it. The application has to provide direct digital camera support.

  • Hard drive failed - have music files but not library.itl file

So here's the situation. The hard drive on my husband's laptop recently failed. It is now fixed, but his data is lost. Luckily, we had moved his music files to an external drive. It appears that we only moved the music files and not the library.itl file. We have a backup from November of the library.itl file.
    1. His ipod is fine. He wants to be able to pull the playlist info from his ipod to restore the info on the library.itl file. Is that possible?
    2. If that is not possible, what are the ramifications of restoring the library.itl file from November? Will he "lose" the music that was added since then?

    1. Not with itunes, sadly. It will try to wipe the ipod since it is a 'new 'library.
    2. Yes, he'll lose everything added since November.

  • Hard drive died, want to upload music from iPod

my hard drive died a nasty death a few weeks ago and so far, no one has been able to recover any data. (Yes, I am one of those fools who hadn't backed up.)
I have a new (blank) hard drive installed now. My iPod has all my music, audiobooks, and photos on it. Is there any way to use the iPod to upload that data onto my new hard drive? When I plug it in, it gives me a message saying that an iPod can only be synced to one iTunes at a time, and do I want to erase (clearly not), or transfer purchases.
The problem is, only a small portion of my music are purchased. The rest have been copied from my old CDs. How can I transfer those songs/playlists to my new hard drive?
And likewise with the photos. In fact, I realize this is really two questions: 1) how do I transfer music and 2) how do I transfer photos? In both cases, I want to use the iPod to overwrite the new (blank) iTunes and iPhoto.
Since my iPod contains the only copies of my music and photos I have left, I really don't want to do anything wrong that might erase them. Help!

  • Hard drive died, but do i have a battery issue also?

    Hello,
Well, my powerbook has been acting funny for the last few months and I think it finally died today. I've been doing weekly bootable backups on a smartdisk firelite 100GB external hard drive. Yesterday my computer was really slow, so today I updated the backup. Afterwards, I tried running disk repair in the disk utility on my internal hard drive, but it froze while doing that and I was forced to hit the kill switch. When I started it again I got the mini-folder with a blinking question mark. Luckily, I think the bootable backup works (although I've had issues with that drive mounting in the past) and for now it looks like I have all my files and applications. I tried running disk repair on the internal hard drive by got the error message: "invalid B-tree node size, volume check failed, underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)".
My question though is about how HOT my powerbook had been running lately. I've been using a notebook cooler with a fan, but it's still very hot to the touch after a while above the keyboard and sometimes I've noticed it's hot on the lower right side (under my left wrist). The adapter on the AC plug/cord setup gets hot also. I'm wondering if the heat was because the hard drive was dying, OR if the hard drive died because of the heat? (Note: I checked my battery serial number a long time ago and it wasn't part of the mac recall.)
I want to get a new hard drive to install (at BestBuy or some other place I guess). I'll look around on the list for recommendations, but I'm open to suggestions. I don't know if it's worth wiping the hard drive I have now and restoring it from the backup, or just assume it's dead. I don't want to get a new hard drive and find out I have a battery overheating issue instead.
    Thanks for your help!
    Lisa

    Lisa:
Before you purchase and install a new HDD, just hold a minute.
Great that you have a bootable backup of your HDD. Good thinking. Are you able to boot the computer from the external firewire HDD? (From a cold start, turn on external HDD, hit computer power button and immediately after chime hold down Option key. Select external HDD in screen and click right pointing arrow.)
When you ran Disk Utility, did you notice the S.M.A.R.T Status? If it says Verified, there is still hope. If it says failing, we'll need to find you a new HDD.
+"invalid B-tree node size, volume check failed, underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)".+
This indicates serious directory issues for which you will need a utility like Disk Warrior, Tech Tool Pro, or DriveGenius. Take a look at Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume for details about the issue.
One of the above utilities has a good chance of repairing the directories. However, there is an even chance that the drive may be too damaged to be repaired. However, you won't know that until after you have run one of those utilities.
Your computer will support a 2.5" (P)ATA/IDE HDD up to 160 GB. Here are some HDDs that will work for you at OWC. If you are handy with a screw driver and have the time and patience you can probably install it yourself using these step by step directions from ifixit. If you need to install a new HDD, and think you would like to try it yourself, post back for additional tips.
    Cheers.

  • Hard drive died, how to get music off iPod

My hard drive died so I lost iTunes. I've reinstalled iTunes and need to move all my music from my iPod to iTunes. If I plug my iPod into my computer, will iTunes take all that music and create a new music library, or will it go the other way around and the new empty iTunes will remove all the music from my iPod?
    I hope that makes sense

Regular forum poster, Zevoneer, has written a very detailed list on your options of how to do this. I need to add one thing. Once you have recovered your library, PLEASE BACKUP YOUR MUSIC, so you don't have to go through this aggravation, again.
Wrong link, let me find the right one & re-post.

  • My macbook pro hard drive died.  I only have a windows hard drive and an old powerbook G4 which of course you can't use to create a boot disk for my macbook.  How can I solve this?

I can't get app store on my old power book to download OS X,  My macbook pro hard drive died and all I have is a windows hard drive, still has windows os  on it, a 500 Gb USB drive and this power book.  How can I get my macbook back up without spending money?  Thanks

And what happens if the OPs Mac is of a newer version that came with a version of Snow Leopard above the 10.6.3 version that is on that Retail, meant for Upgrade, disc? Like if it came with 10.6.4/.5/.6/.7? That disc you linked to would not work.
He needs to contact Apple and get a replacement set of Original System Reinstall Discs. That is the only way he can be assured it will work and he would also get the iLife apps which he wouldn't buying that DVD disc you linked to.
    dwb wrote:
The Snow Leopard DVD is $20 from Apple. You'll just have to wait a few days. BTW this is a full installer that works with any model computer that can run SL. Apple used to ship recovery/installation disks that were tied to specific computer models so that a 15" MBP installer disk coudn't be used on a 13" MBP computer. So you need either full installer or the recovery disks for your specific model.
And BTW, I have a 2009 13" MBP w/8GB RAM that is running Mavericks. With a 5400 RPM drive I used to experience a bit of beach balling (think hour glassing) but an SSD has given it new life. It feels now slower than the newest MBPs - it obviously benchmarks considerably slower but in everyday use it doesn't feel like a 4 1/2 year old computer at all.

  • If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.

  • My very expensive 2010 MacBook Pro hard drive died over a year ago (never bothered to fix it as the dvd drive had also failed so not worth it).   Nevertheless, I finally decided to sync my iPhone to the replacement laptop pc and it wiped out all the music

My very expensive 2010 MacBook Pro hard drive died over a year ago. I finally synced my iPhone to the replacement laptop pc and it wiped out all the music on the phone including most of the purchases. Can I get the music back (restore didn't help)?

Okay, I finally got the couple of songs left on the phone to play by uninstalling and reinstalling itunes on the pc and re syncing. The last version I installed (just prior to my original post) failed to start due to some unspecified error?!?. Great!. But I still couldn't sync the itunes purchases from the PC to the iPhone. Then, after about an hour of googling and reading assorted posts mostly about using google to resolve the issue, I finally figured out that I have to actually download ALL the purchased albums from iCloud back onto the iPhone! There are hundreds of them, and some are not even available anymore.
Why do I have to do that when I originally purchased and downloaded all the music to the phone? Why are they all on the PC to begin with and why won't they go to the phone via the USB cable? Why didn't all the music get wiped out on the phone when I synced with the dodgy itunes I had to uninstall. never mind.
I accept that all my original music from cds and shared collections is gone on the failed mbp hard drive, but how come this once okay experience has become a trauma? Hundreds of songs to download all over again, sheesh, this has not exactlybeen a "That Was Easy" experience guys.

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

  • We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  My hard drive died and we have a new hard drive now, but all that the fixit shop put on it was the Snow Leopard OS;  can I ask Apple for a download of our other many software programs to reload them?  Does it cost to do

We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  The hard drive died and we had a new hard drive installed.  They only installed the Snow Leopard OS on it, and there were many software programs that came with the iMac originally.. now missing.  Does anyone know whether Apple will resupply these?  I do have an Apple installation disc but have upgraded from the original Leopard to Snow Leopard... so the OS is not quite the same.  Ideas?  Thanks!

No bootable bakup/clone or Time Machine backup? No initial install discs? If no to both of those, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and request replacement discs for that machine. They're available for a nominal S&H charge.
