Hard drive died.  How to sync my Ipod/music to new drive ??

Hello, Sad day yesterday. Click click... HD died. Took to Mactown and They are putting in new one.
They said that if I sync my iPod Classic with my new drive, all my music and audiobooks will be erased. Can anyone help me?

You should be able to restore from your backup. You do remember to backup, don't you?
If not, see the following post:

Can someone tell me how i sync my ipod on my new computer. i have authorised the computer but i can not find where to sync it. i thought Apple was meant to be easy

    Hi Richail,
Once you have selected your sync options in iTunes, such as what music or videos you want to transfer, the Apply button should be in the bottom right hand corner of the window. For more information on syncing iOS devices, you may find the following article helpful:

  • HT1386 I bought a new computer and I don't know how to sync  my ipod and the new itunes on my new computer, thanks :)

    Help please!!

You cannot transfer from the iPhone to the computer.
You must move the contents of your old computer to the new one directly.
Use an external hard drive perhaps or restore your old computer backup to your new computer.
The iPhone is not the source of your data, that is the computer, the iPhone is only a slave device to iTunes.

  • My old computer died, how to use my iPod on my new computer?

Is there a support link that tells me what steps to go through to set up my iPod with my new PC. When I try to just authorize it on my new PC, iTunes wants to delete everything on my iPod. But, I want to keep everything there, and have iTunes repopulated with my old purchases, and then I'll import my mp3 library for my songs that I brought in from my CDs. Any pointers to the right procedure to use?

*There's no way to connect my iPod to my new computer without losing the mp3s that I ripped before from my CDs.*
If your iPod is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed above your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.

The hard drive on the computer that I had my itunes on went out and I had to replace it, losing my itunes and other things, but I cared more about the itunes then I did with anything else. Now when I try to download itunes and try to sync my ipod, it says that if I sync it, all music with be replaced, and I don't want that. • I have just changed my computer as my old one died... but now cannot access my old itunes account so i have set up a new one with another email address. how can I sync my ipod to my new computer without wiping all my music ?

I have just tried to sync my ipod to a new computer as my old one died but as I cannot remember my previous log in I created a new itunes account. I now want to sync but it says it will wipe my music off my ipod. Does anyone know how I can do this now ?

If you have purchases on your iPod Shuffle that you want to sync back to iTunes, but are under the Apple ID you no longer have access to, you'll need to reset that account information. You can use this link to reset your password.
    https://iforgot.apple.com/
If that doesn' work or help, you'll need to contact iTunes support and have them walk you through the process of resetting the older account information.  Once you know the email and password again, you can authorize your new computer and transfer any purchases from this account back to iTunes.
For all non-iTunes purchased content, you'll need to the assistance of some sort of third party software that is not supported by Apple. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year.  It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you.  Items that it does not find in the catalog it'll upload and store these in the cloud for you and you can download them on your devices.  See http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/

Sync transfer is one way, matching the device content to the content on the computer, except purchased content as mentioned above.  For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you have to use third party commercial software. In general do not regard your i-device as a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining a backup of your media on a computer backup.

The following article contains directions that can help get you back on track with iTunes. I'd recommend picking up at 'Part 5' of the 'External drive' section.
