Hard drive disappears after install of 10.4.3

Just upgraded from 10.2.7 to 10.4.3,
I have a powermac G4 with 4 hard drives (two 40gb and two 120gb). The two 40gb and one 120gb drives were recognized after the upgrade, but the other 120gb does not show up anywhere, including disk utility. All drives have been functioning properly prior to the upgrade. I also have one internal superdrive and one external DVD-R drive (both are recognized).
Any ideas appreciated...thanks in advance,
-Erik

if thats the case then it most likelyt is a hardware issue and not a problem with os 10.4 it might be worth your while to make sure though and find someone with a 10.2 or 10.3 disc an see if its listed in that setup, or you could check to see if that hardrive is visable in another computer that would at least rule out the possibility of the harddrive malfunctioning, but you may7 just also want to try another harddrive bay it could just be as simple as the serial cable being toast or at worst one of the buses being toast, but i believee your mac has four bays so definatly try that. and if worst comes to worst and none of these things seem to work then try calling apple.
i hope one of these things will help and give you insight on this issue, good luck!

  • USB keys and external hard drives disappear after 30 seconds to 1 minute of being mounted.

I just got my 15' MacBook Pro refurbished (by Apple), and everything is working well except my USB ports. My USB keys appear for 30 seconds to as much as 2 minutes before disappearing from eveywhere, my desktop, finder and disk utility.  I have a 1 TB WD passport for mac that also has the same problem, but can stay on the desktop and copy files for around 10 minutes. Then error -36 shows up, the hard drive disappears from the desktop and finder, but only appears in disk utility. It is powered as well, The light is currently flashing indicating it's receiving power as I am typing this. But still, no way i can copy anyhting onto it.
I have searched and searched for the solution to this problem, I have tried using apple script to find "invisible hard drives." and that doesn't work either.
On my windows partition in bootcamp, all usb keys work perfectly fine.
Is it because the USB ports are out of energy and dying? If so, should the refurbishment have covered that and replaced them? (Note: refurbishment included everything from my Keysboard to my battery to my Optical drive and cable optical drive flex)
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem on my own?
Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi wdmpfm,
Here is something from an earlier post on the -36 error that may help to identify the issue:
A -36 is a disc I/O error. You might have a corrupt file, or a corrupted drive. Try creating a new file and see if you still get the error. If you do, it might be wise to run a Disc Repair program to see if it can find any errors that it can fix.
    And one from another thread:
You need to format your drive correctly. New drives come formatted for Windows, & then they seem to work — but not properly.
    +Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility+
Choose one of the +Mac OS Extended+ formats.
Obviously first you will have to back-up all the data you have already put on the drive, because it will all be lost when you re-format.
Hope one of these may help!
    Cheers,
    GB

  • USB Hard Drive Disappears after 10.6.3 update

My Samsung S2 640 GB USB portable hard drive is missing from Desktop, Finder and Disk Utility-- but visible in System Profiler after 10.6.3 update. It was fine before the update.
Plugged directly into rear of iMac, I changed cables and slots-- no joy. Even tried a double USB cable as there is no external power supply.
Four other USB HDs work just fine in all slots om the iMac , and this Samsung S2 works fine in my MacBook SL 10.6.3
I bought an identical Samsung S2 and it had the same problems-- so it's not the drive.
    Suggestions?

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.

  • Shared hard drive disappearing after airport update

My shared hard drive attached to my airport extreme will mount but afterwards gives me the error message "The alias “xxxxxx” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found." Also the drive is listed under my shared section in the finder window but when selected gives a share-point icon and doesn't allow access. This has been occurring after the airport utility update. Any information would be greatly appreciated....and I just got the access via the internet working and now this - bummer.
workaround: I have found that selecting the drive in the finder window then deselecting and selecting a second time will give me access to the drive but thats a pain in the rear.

"It will not let me verify the drive" means that I am unable to verify the drive.
Today, I installed the security update on my 24" intel imac, that I've owned since April. I restarted the machine. Up came the folder icon with the question mark. I restarted a second time and the same thing occurred. I then inserted the installer disc that came with the computer and I was able to start up the computer that way. Using the Disc Utility, I attempted to verify or repair the hard drive, but all those options were ghosted ("it will not let me verify the hard drive") Also, while there, I saw that the hard drive partitions were not recognized: there were two partitions (1: 500GB; 2: 198GB) but now it was registering a single drive at 698GB of 750.
I then called Apple support. We reset the PRAM. We did a hard drive test (restart holding "d") and that test produced no error. We then tried unplugging all peripherals, including the power supply, and letting it sit for a few moments. The imac restarted to the same results. Finally, the tech suggested attempting an archive install, which was not available as an option. Further, the install disc did not detect an available hard drive for installation, so the option to reinstall the OS was not an option, either.
The tech said my only option is to take it in for service, leaving me unable to work for four to five days (if I'm lucky), as they won't get to it until Monday, and even then they're backed up.

  • Hard drive unusable after installing in powered on MBP

    Hey all,
I have a 2010 13'' MBP that has a 250GB hard drive, and recently I had a chance to upgrade to a 2010 15'' model. Since the previous owner planned to move his HDD out of the Mac, I would have to install my own HDD. I've nearly filled the drive to capacity, so I decided to upgrade to a bigger hard drive, and then put that in the bigger MBP. I got a 320GB laptop drive, performed a fresh install of Mavericks on it, and during the initial run with Setup Assistant I migrated everything off of the 250 to the new drive. After the setup was complete, I booted into the fresh install with my data to ensure everything was working, and it appeared that it was fine. I then shut off the machine, and disconnected the 320GB from the Mac.
I opened up the 15'' MBP, removed the prior owner's HDD, and replaced it with my new 320GB HDD. What I didn't know was that the MBP was still powered on: it was simply in sleep mode with the lid closed. I hadn't thought to check to ensure that the Mac was off before I did the drive replacement.
As a result, when I opened the lid on the Macbook, the machine woke up, and was still displaying his desktop and open applications. I quickly closed out of all the applications and shut the laptop off. When I rebooted, it was as I feared: the machine went straight to the OS X Utilities menu, and when I attempted to repair the drive in Disk Utility, I was warned that the drive couldn't be repaired. The drive also did not appear with the Mac partition in Disk Utility: it was just displayed as disk0s2.
I've tried repairing the drive with Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, and Drive Genius, and none of them have been able to recover/repair the parition. Is it possible that when I replaced the hard drive while the MBP was still powered on, the current session somehow damaged the hard drive's partition or file table?

Based on your description, you closed applications that were opened with another drive. This would certainly seem to have the potential to really screw things up. Given the situation, it probably would have been better to hold down the power key and do a hard shutdown to prevent writing anything to the wrong disk.
Why not just reinstall? You've tried pretty much everything else. Repartition and reformat your drive first, then migrate from the old one.

  • Hard Drive Fail after install Photoshop CS6?

Hi! I downloaded Photoshop CS6 six days ago. Three days later my hard drive failed... and now can not find the installation. The repair put my system back to a previous time when the computer worked fine. Did this erase the install???
    Thanks,
    CeCe1019

What is your operating system & version?
If Windows, how was the system reset - by System Restore?  Or a complete restore from backup?
While a System Restore will leave the installed programs in your Program Files, all registry data and system files will have disappeared.  So either way you will have to reinstall.

  • Realtek HD Audio driver disappears after installing an ATI Radeon graphics card

My Realtek HD Audio driver disappears (from both the Vista "Sound Manager" and the "Device Manager") and is replaced by an ATI HD Audio driver after installing an ATI  Radeon 5450 graphics card.  I've tried un-installing the ATI Audio driver and re-installing the Realtek Audio driver.  But, upon rebooting, Vista automatically re-installs the ATI Audio driver (and the Realtek Audio driver, which I just re-installed, is no where to be found after rebooting).  I'm using an HP a6110n desktop running Windows Vista.
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
I bet you were unpleasantly surprised by that!
    The fix is simple:
Go into your system setup (BIOS) using the F10 key.
Find your device configuration menu. In that menu there should be a setting for your onboard audio. It is probably set to Auto.
Change the setting to Enabled. Hit the F10, key there and again when you save your settings and exit.
Now your onboard audio will be back and your HDMI out audio on your graphics card should work too when you need it.
What happened was when you installed the Video card with HDMI out, there is an audio chip on the video card for HDMI. The PC sensing a new sound card, just disabled the onboard sound card because it thought you didn't want to use the onboard card anymore.
Changing the BIOS setting to enabled tells the PC to use the onboard audio card as well as any others you may have installed.

  • SATA DVD Drive disappeared after Install HELP!

I installed Snow Leopard using my second DVD drive in my Mac Pro. After install I tried ejecting the install DVD and it dissapeared but didn't eject the disk... that DVD drive is no longer recognized — I can't option+eject to get it to eject, when I do this it comes up with the Shutdown computer dialogue. "About this Mac" lists the drive as present under the Serial-ATA list, Toast doesn't recognize the disk. Any suggestions apart from paperclip?
    Thanks,
    John

Reboot and hold "option." In the boot menu, do you see the DVD? If so, try to eject it with the eject key.
If not, it sounds like something is wrong with the drive. The next thing would be to use the paperclip to get the disc out, and then troubleshoot the drive.

  • Hard drives damaged after installing Snow Leopard :(

After installing Snow Leopard all software seemed to work fine. Then I found out that e-sata doesn't seem to work well with Snow.
I've tried two different e-sata cards, including CalDigit's FASTA-2e, which CalDigit claims works fine with 10.6.
My external enclosure appeared and immediately gave me a kernel panic. I tried several times with different working drives and now they are all heavily damaged. Kernal panic after kernal panic, I am noe having a difficult time accessing the data.
Now here's the strange part...after going back to Leopard 10.5, my internal drives all seemed to be infected as well. After using Disk Warrior and apple's disc utility, I got those working ok.
What could be going wrong here? I installed Snow. It was fast. But it wasn't worth it...at least not yet.
If there's anything else I might be doing wrong or any way to fix these drives now, please let me know.
    Thanks all!

It seems that Sonnet is not yet compatible with Snow Leopard either. That issue was covered here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2114442&tstart=0.
Anyone know if RocketRAID eSATA for Mac works with Snow? Apple sells it...

  • Where has the hard drive gone after installing lion?, where has the hard drive gone after installing lion?

I'm looking in finder but can no longer see the hard drive. Where has it gone to?

If I understand correctly, you can edit what is shown in the side bar within the "Finder Preferences".
under the "sidebar" tab tick the boxes of the things you want to be shown in the side bar of Finder.
under the "General" tab tick the boxes of the things you want to be shown on the desktop.
Hope this is what you are after and this helps.

  • Hard drive halved after installing os x mavericks

I updated a macbook pro to mavericks from mountain lion and when it was done my data was gone and the hard drive is now only 250 GB instead of 500GB
Please help. how can i get my data back and what happed to the hhd
    thx in advance

I had the same problem when I installed Leopard. I re-partitioned and re-formatted the drive and everything has been happy since. I know Leopard and Time Machine do some new, low-level things to external hard drives so it may be that the file system really is corrupt but it doesn't bother any other systems.
I don't if any 3rd party disk repair tools could repair the drive. Such tools aren't much cheaper than a new drive anyway. Plus, hard drives aren't as reliable as they used to be. It is always good to have a new external drive on deck these days.

  • CD/DVD Drive disappears after installing itunes and quicktime HELP!

When I have installed itunes and quicktime my cd/dvd player drive disappears?? Has anyone had this problem??

I have had exactly the same problem with my Toshiba Laptop running Vista Home Premium for 5 months. I have continually tried updating and checking this site for a fix, but haven't had a clue. My Son-in-law works for Microsoft and uses iTunes extensively and he can't figure it out either. Toshiba has no answers.
I am beginning to believe that Gates has scored one-up on Jobs by planting something in Vista that crashes the drive when you try to use Apple software.

  • DVD Drive disappeared after installing Boot Camp on Windows 8

I am running Mountain Lion and I bootcamped Windows 8... this is a fresh install.
    1. I installed Windows 8 and the DVD is still working
    2. I installed Bootcamp software via DVD and was asked to reboot
    3. I reboot my iMac
    4. Now, my friggin DVD doesnt work anymore...
    5. I look at My Computer and it's gone.
    6. I look at the device manager and it's not there
    7. I showed hidden devices and the hl-dt-st dvdrw ga32 is there (disabled of course)
    8. i am writing to apple community after a night of searching for a solution in vain.
please help me. i really need my DVD drive
    thanks in advance

    thanks for the response
    1. Yeah I thought that's a mandatory thing because i need to be able to control the brightness with my keyboard, updated graphics card, boot camp control panel, etc
    2. No there's no enable for this because Windows 8 recognizes it as a "disconnected device" and asks me to reconnect the dvd drive to the machine (which it obviously already is).
    3. Ive tried those before, also even editing the registry but it didnt work.
It's weird because it never happened before on Snow Leopard » Lion bootcamp driver updates. Just in Mountain Lion
