Hard Drive Disk Space Unavailable

I have a Mac Pro, 2006, with 1TB Hard Drive.  When I open the HD window, it shows that 2.73 GB are available, yet if I add up the disk space used by all the folders, I only come up with 415 GB.  I have run the Apple disk utility and it has not found any errors.  I have run iAntiVirus, and it has not detected any viruses.  Any clues as to what is going wrong?

Be advised Lion's TimeMachine on notebooks (only) will "backup" to the local hard drive also when the external is not found.
If a drive isn't present and mounted when a program expects to run a backup, not just yours, it can and will go to "./Volumes/" which should never have data, only a mount alias. But once it happens, if you get

It will misbehave forever until you get rid of the duplicated name alias.
I consider that to be more an OS and HFS+ design flaw, and of course software testing and handling - more has to go into "exception handling" and what to do when a drive doesn't mount. And TimeMachine can "lose" a drive even in the process and during a backup-copy operation (go to sleep).
And there are programs designed to keep a shadow copy on the local drive, taking a quota of space. Maybe where Lion "new" feature has its roots in other platform and OS and ideas of other products.
Have to admit I have not seen NTI Shadow 5 before. My guess is might even be OEM version included with some backup drives. Do make sure yours is the latest version - they say "Lion compatible" now. Sounds a bit like what WD includes with some of their MyBooks (I looked at their PC USB3 case w/ controller today).

If this is with USB, I can see an issue with drive being off line, not mounting, etc. If it is housed internally, no, should be always available, one of the conveniences but takes up one of the 4 or 5 drive bays. (Some people swap their backup drive bay.)

    I have a MacBook. only had it about 6 months ( a new Apple convert ) .... I upgraded to a 250 GB hard drive and keep my iTunes library on it. I noticed a performance change recently and discovered I was almost out of disk space. I have managed to free up approx. 7 GB but I continue to get that rotating beach ball icon much more often than ever before. I'm also noticing odd behaviors regarding my video... for example, if I click my desktop and do a click/drag, I everything suddenly is outlines and highlighted. This also occurs randomly on websites when I select something.
    I thought perhaps the video issue could be caused by apps I've downloaded, but the only thing I've added recently was a program called iSale ( for eBay listings ) and a few iPod Touch applications from the Apps store.
    Is 7 GB of free disk space insufficient, or would freeing up more space help ??

    7GB is way too low for a drive that size. you should have at least 25% of drive space free. you are undoubtedly suffering from disk fragmentation which can cause all sorts of issues. also you should check the integrity of your file system as it can easily be damaged because of low disk space. "run verify disk" in disk utility and if it reports any errors start from the install DVd and repair the drive (you can't do it while booted from the same drive). also, you need to free up some space and defrag the drive. one easy way to defrag is to clone your drive to an external then boot from the external and clone it back. ultimately you need either a bigger internal or an external to keep a lot of your data.

    Works fine. I use two different libraries. I have one I keep on my MacBook that I use when I'm not hooked to the external hard drive. I keep just what I listen to the most on it.
    The second library I have set up with all of my music on my external drive. That way I an start iTunes with either library depending on the situation.
    This way I don't have my music duplicated on both drives. The bulk is on the external. I also keep a few movies on my MacBook and the rest on the external. Same situation. I have some in one library and the others in the external.

    No -- and by the way, if you only have 'a few Gb available' on your boot drive, you may possible get into problems with the OS. The general rule of thumb is to keep from 10% to 15% of your boot hard drive free for OS use.

  • Hard drive disk space completely disappeared

    Hello. I run Arch Linux and Windows SP3 on a Lenovo Thinkpad R61. I decided to move some files (around 22GB) from my Linux partition to my Windows partition. However, due to some mounting problems I am having in Arch, I decided to use my Ubuntu Live CD for this purpose.
    I moved the files to my Windows partition, then I selected the files on my Arch partition and pressed Delete. Now, the files are "gone", or should I say invisible?
    The files are gone, neither Nautilus nor ls will find them. However, locate finds the files.
    Nautilus claims I've got 559 MB free space, GParted claims I've got 4,28 GB free space, the Disk Usage Analyzer claims I've got 4,3 GB free space, df says I've used 70 GB out of 74 GB, and that I've got 339 MB free space.
    My Linux partition is 74,66 GB, but my Disk Usage Analyzer says different. It claims on two different places that it is 74GB and 50GB.
    I believe this problem might have been due to the lack of a working trash can on the Ubuntu live cd. I believe I should have used shift+delete instead, or removed them in Arch.
    Well, is there any way to solve this?

    It can also be in the root of the partition where the files were in .Trash
    Locate uses a database of the files you have/had on disk, only when it is rebuilt you will see the changes.
    You can try do do
    find / | grep part_of_the_name_of_one_file
    but it will take a really good while.

  • Does iCloud drive use up hard drive storage space?

    HI,
    I want to save hard drive space and use iCloud Drive to store my documents, pictures etc. I have the iCloud drive folder set up in my finder. I have been copying and pasting data in there, but it seems whenever I do; the hard drive storage space decreases.
    I thought the entire point of iCloud was to use cloud storage and not offline storage; unless you download it from the cloud to your hard drive. Why am I losing hard drive space?

    I am writing to say that I am having the problem you are worried about. I have a 121 GB MacBook with flash storage, and I am running out of room.
    This is my work computer so I don't have any personal photos/music/movies stored on here. My iCloud drive has over 100 GB on it and it's driving this computer nuts! I am constantly getting the "your startup disk is full" message. As you can see from the screen shot below, it's saying I have 58.61 GB of photos on this computer, 25.84GB of movies etc...but all these files live on my personal MacBook at home.
    I am paying for the $3.99 a month for 200 GB but I didn't get that iCloud would use up my HD space. So as a warning, 128 GB may not be enough for you.

    I have an 11 inch Macbook Air with a 120GB SSD and I am running OS X Lion 10.7.5.
    Every so often I get messages indicating my hard drive is nearly full. Since it is a small hard drive I never thought much of it and just deleted a movie or two I put on it for when I travel. But lately I realized that I keep all my music, photos, and bulk of my movie files on an external drive, so there really isn’t much on my computer.
    When I add up all the files listed under My Mac HD in the finder, I get 62 GB. Add in the operating system and I come up with 75 GB of the SSD used. When I look at the storage summary on “About this Mac”, it says I am using 94 GB. There is about a 19 GB discrepancy. Does anyone know what could cause this and where 19 GB of data can be hiding?

    Use a tool like OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 to find what's on the disk, where, and how large.

      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.

    You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
    You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

If I bought a 1TB hard drive disk would it work in my computer and would apple install it for me? If not is there anywhere in manhattan thats an afiliate of apple that would do it? I checked out Ifixit.com and was looking at how to do it on my own but honestly I'd probably screw it up. Any help would be much appreciated.

    There is no startup system on it. Or, you need to open Startup Disk preferences and select a startup disk. Or your startup disk lacks a name such as "Macintosh HD," for example.

    since yesterday my Logic Pro (9.1.8) has a big problem. After I installed the Update 10.8.4 the Hard Drive (Disk I/O) Display overloads everytime, when i start to play my vocals/tracks. Even older projects (i never had problems) with just 20 tracks and without third party plugins the HD Display goes up and with the latest project (49 Tracks) i cannot even create a new track anymore. It says "not enough memory" and then it crashes.
    I bought my Imac some months ago. Just some informations about my Imac.
    - Late 2012, 21,5"
    - 16 GB Ram
    - 2.7 GHz Intel Core I5
    - Hard Disk 5400 revolutions per minute, Sata (still 900 GB free)
    Basically I bought my Imac to create music and to use logic pro - its very frustrating .. i cannot work anymore.
    I tried everything - change the settings, change the buffer size, not to use my interface, 32bit to 64bit, to delete Autotune (my only third party plugin) from the AU-Manager. I even had a call with the Apple Support (2 hours long) and they couldnt find a solution ..
    If they cannot find a solution, i think its even harder to find someone here, who can help me. So my question is just, is there someone else who has a similiar problem with the update??  .. I'd say a problem shared is a problem halved :-)

    Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

    I think you can, but you'll need LV (RT) 7.1 on the host PC to install LV RT 7.1 on the PXI controller using MAX after formatting it.
    (Unless you have an image created by the RT replication toolkit, but then other problems might arise...)

  • Internal Hard Drive Free Space Issue

    I recently upgraded my 17" MacBook Pro from Tiger to Snow Leopard but the upgrade seems to have created a number of problems, the most notable being the lack of free space now available on my internal hard drive.
    I also had to install a trial version of Aperture 3.0.3 in order to access my aperture library as the older version of Aperture is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
    At this point the free space available on my internal hard drive was 36GB and my aperture library was 39GB. I had to uninstall Photoshop Elements 9 in order to create enough free space to open this library.
    I bought an external hard drive and after some organising (importing and exporting to and from external hard drive), I eventually moved all photo files/folders, projects and libraries onto this external drive, leaving only one in-progress project (about 3GB) left on the internal volume.
    I also exported my iTunes library and any other files to this external drive.
    All trashes have been emptied.
    The problem is that, despite all this clear-out, I now only have 2GB of free space on the internal hard drive.
    I ran Disk Inventory X and it shows that my home folder is using 155GB of space, which seems ridiculous considering there is in effect nothing left on my laptop save for the application programs and the one remaining project.
    I have manually checked through this folder and all its subfolders and have found nothing that would accumulate to this amount of space.
    I have repaired an issue with the internal volume, but it is now showing a “minor” problem with the volume header.
    If someone can provide and explanation/solution to this I would be very grateful as it is severely slowing my workflow at the moment.

    I suggest that you begin with Repair Disk
    Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
    Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
    Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    (Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
    Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
    If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
    If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
    If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    I recommend that you make sure that you make a bootable clone of your entire volume using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
    You should also seriously consider installing a larger capacity drive.

    I am a recent new user of Apple Mac from when I bought this Macbook Air 3 months ago.
    Nice machine, but difficult to get the hang of.
    Specific problem I'd like help with please is to enable me to write to my Samsung S2 Portable Hard Drive (500GB)
    I can see it and read files, but can't save to the EHD.
    In Disk Utility, all options to verify and repair the EHD are greyed out. So, most of the friendly suggestions on other threads don't help me.
    I don't know how big the hard drive is on my Macbook (nor how to find out), or how much remaining space there is, but there is over 400GB of data on the EHD.
    The EHD is in NTFS format, all data on it was from Windows computers. There isn't space on my Windows laptop for all this data.
    I don't have another EHD, so have nowhere to move the data to if I have to reformat the EHD.
    On another thread I saw a suggestion to uninstall something or other before reformatting the EHD, but I don't even know how to uninstall programs on a Macbook.
    I don't know why Apple have to spoil such a great machine by making it so difficult for non-afficionados to use (sorry, frustrated).
    I say "great" because it's so light it makes work much easier. I can carry it around all day with little effort and don't have to take the charger to work.
    Any help anyone could offer with the EHD will be appreciated.

    Yes, I'm new to Mac, having bought this Macbook 3 months ago after years of Windows (as stated in my original post).
    I still have a Windows laptop and all my work colleagues currently use Windows, so I need compatibility with both.
    Paragon sounds like a good option, and I don't mind a bit of cost if it sorts the problem.
    Hopefully I'll get feedback from someone who has used Paragon and can report how effective it is and whether or not there are any problems asociated with it.

  • Time Machine External Hard Drive Disk Check/Repair

    Howdy
    I have a 24" iMac using Time Machine for a backup. The external drive that Time Machine writes to is a 500 GB FW400 hard drive. I am occasionally getting an error message stating that Time Machine was unable to complete a back up to a write error.
    Could someone please explain to me in some detail how to run a disk check on this external drive to look for any hardware errors? Also, if necessary how would I perform a disk repair on this external drive?
    Then one more question. Is there a way to delete just the Oldest roughly 50% of the backup files that
    Time machine has stored on the external drive, so as to clear up disk space by removing files that I no longer would have use for?

    You need to locate the files you wish to delete then use the tool drop down menu to delete them.
    A TM backup is a specific hierarchy of files arranged on the backup drive. You cannot simply comb through the backup archive and selectively delete data from the backup. Doing so would only result ultimately in a messed up backup or having the files replaced during TM's next backup since you did not delete the same files from you hard drive.
    If your backup drive is having write error problems, deleting files from the backup drive isn't going to solve them. Repairing the hard drive may fix the problem depending on the cause. Since you did not post any console messages from the TM backup that reported the error, there's no way to determine the possible cause other than a disk error. Repairing the drive should be your first effort. Examining the console log entries may provide additional information if repairing the drive isn't able to fix the problem.
    As you should know TM will automatically expunge old files if it requires additional space for a backup. See the following:
    About TM "Backup Drive is Full" Alert
    TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Data are deleted to make space for a new backup, but if TM is unable to delete enough files to free up space for the new backup, then you will get a disk full error. Normal thinning during a backup occurs during TM's periodic weekly and monthly consolidation backups. Note, that on a TC the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from your view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
    Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.
    It's quite easy to run out of backup space. A TM backup drive should be at least twice the capacity of the drive(s) backed up.
