Hard Drive Doubled In Size

I have a 500 GB hard drive and it's been running less than 1/2 full forever. And then all of a sudden there is only 22 GB free. And now it has 50.7 GB free. I have not installed or deleted anything that would explain these
changes. I've ran all the tools defrag, clean disk, temp files, virus scans etc. When I run the drive space manager to see what is on the hard drive there is a large gray area that says unscanned. I would appreciate any assistance. Thanks in advance.

Try to open Hidden Files and let me know what all you can see.
Here's how to display hidden files and folders.
Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button ,
clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance
and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Under Advanced settings, click Show
hidden files, folders, and drives, and then click OK.
Also make sure that you un check the 3 highlighted options.
You will mainly get Recycle Bin folder and System Volume Information folder in which the data will be present Else there will be Page File or Space reserved for System Restore.

  • What is my hard drive type and size?

    My model is: 13-inch, Early 2008, Generation 5, MB402xx/A
I've found the manuals for my model of macbook, I think, and it tells me how to replace the RAM. But it doesn't tell me how to replace the hard drive. I'm just not looking in the right place, I guess.
I'm going on a trip soon, and I'd like to remove my hard drive and leave it at home. The new hard drive will have something like fedora or ubuntu on it, just so I can have a computer while I travel without taking all of my data with me. (Even if I back up my osx drive properly, the drive will still have my personal data on it when I travel - which I'd prefer not to risk, of course.)
Where can I find the specs for this old macbook, so I know what to place into it?

Thank you for reminding me about the system profiler and then the 9.5mm size limit. That would be a headache to order and discover right before my trip.
I think I've found a good replacement over at newegg, instead of macsales, though. The drive will cost me a little more than macsales, but I can get the hard drive and the firewire enclosure cheaper by buying them separate then buying one of the kits from macsales. (I will keep my eyes open over there, though, from now on for sales and upgrades. Always good to have another place to shop from.)

  • URGENT! T30 Hard Drive Replacement - Max Size Limit?

Is there a limit to the GB size that I can use to replace my internal hard drive?  The largest I have seen referenced on the lenovo site is 80gb, but I would like to go bigger if it can be supported.  Any ideas?  I need to get this machine up and running ASAP, as the old drive is completely dead.
    Thanks!

If you can find a brand new 7200rpm PATA laptop drive, such as that Hitachi 7K100, grab it immediately since they're no longer in production...
Personally, I prefer Seagate, but my T43 runs a Hitachi 60GB/7200 rpm...
    Hope this helps.

  • Upgrade Macbook Late 2008 Unibody Hard Drive SSD or size?

I have a late 2008 macbook aluminum unibody..........it currently only has the standard 160 GB...and I'm at about 152 GB. I need to upgrade (already upgraded from 2GB RAM to 8GB), but now I need the bigger hard drive. My friend is telling me how great a SSD would be, but I can obviously get a much bigger drive if iI do a standard or hybrid. Please let me know if I should spend $$$$$$$ on SSD...or on Hybrid.........or if I should just get a regular HD?
More info: I'm a firefighter, who is a mortgage originator as a side job. I have NO INTEREST in PC's.......but for my Mortgage side job- I need to have a windows based option. at 152/160 GB used; 8 GB RAM - it is 'fast enough'. Any suggestions as to what type of HD I should get for this old boy? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

Get a regular HDD for  your computer. It should be a notebook sized drive, SATA II-3.0 Gb/s, 7200 RPM. A Seagate XT500 Hybrid is a good trade-off of performance and price.

  • Mac Pro Internal Hard Drive Raid and Size

I have out grown hard drive storage space on my Mac Pro. Currently, I have a 300 Gig system drive and 500Gig Scratch Drive. I am considering purchasing two 1000Gig drives because I could use a very large volume of video storage.
I would think that an internal SATA drive has a better read when compared to a FireWire/USB 2.0 Drive
In addition I want to RAID the two 1000Gig drives to increase my read/write speed and provide some measure of redundancy.
Any Suggestions as to type of RAID, how to format and create the RAID.
Also any suggestions as to brand of drive to purchase.

  • List all contents of a hard drive by file size?

    Hi All,
My problem is I have a 27+ GB start-up disc "system" partition I rarely save files to, but I'm using over 26 GB of storage for some reason. I have only a small handful of files in the usual culprits: no movies and only a handful of documents and pictures saved there. Can I possibly have that much storage tied up in application program files? I don't have many apps on here - just the pre-loaded stuff from apple, MS Office Student Edition and ProTools with a small handful of plug-ins. I have a much larger "storage" partition where I save everything - like downloads, or files I created in apps. I even relocate any Garageband projects and my iTunes folder to that storage partition. So what exactly are the big files that are tying up the system partition is a bit of a mystery to me.
What I'd like is something like I could find in Windows: If you search a drive for all files, it lists them and you can sort by size to see the biggest space hogs and can delete the files directly from the list to free up space.
I'd like to look at all the files on the "system" partition, identify what is not needed and delete it with as little fuss as possible.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    ~A

    Hi almainstay and welcome.
As klaus1 says, Whatsize is an excellent little app. You can also use Finder. With a new Finder window open key ⌘+2 for List View, then ⌘+J to bring up view options. Select the 'This window only' button and check the 'Calculate all sizes' box as well as any other sorting that you might require like Date modified or Date created. You might like to open the Library folder and scroll down to 'Logs' to make sure that a runaway process isn't writing to Logs incessantly. Check the size of the folder, (mine is 440 KB).
    Good luck and post back.

  • Which external hard drive and ? size

We are a family that have just converted to the imac and want to use the time machine to back up (I have a click free system for my laptop but like the idea of using the history function).
From my little knowledge it seems connecting with a firewire 800 is the fastest. We would be backing up photos, itunes and documents that we create we have a 500gb hardrive but we won't have used much of it as yet. We want a drive that is fairly portable so that we can disconnect it easily and store in another location wifi is not important.
    We are in the UK
    Any suggestions please

I don't have any personal experience with Seagate external drives so I cannot comment without any real authority. I know they make very good internal drives so it really comes down to the quality of their enclosures.
BTW another (and popular) strategy is using redundant backups. The most popular is to use TM for incremental backups however the problem with TM is isn't bootable so if your internal drive fails you are down until it can be replaced. If that isn't a problem then TM is an excellent stand alone solution. However if you want a bootable back up you can use an application like SuperDuper (SD) or Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) which creates a bootable backup of your entire drive. Many people (myself included) use both TM and a bootable backup. I rely on TM if I need to restore a file however in the event my internal drive crashes I can also rely on my SD backup (on a second external HD) for backup to boot and run from. This is a more expensive solution because you have to buy 2 external HD's however it does provide additional peace of mind. I would recommend reading this article from Macworld that discusses backup solutions, at a minimum definitely use TM!

  • Hard Drive Maximum Size Supported

    Hello,
I'm have a MacBook Aluminum (MB466LL/A) and I would like to upgrade my Hard Drive to a 1TB.
The question is: This MacBook accepts a hard drive with this size? Anyone here knows the maximum size supported?
    Regards!
    Felipe Perez

Yes, the model 5,1 can use a 12.5mm high hard drive. There's no limit to the GBs of the drive only the physical height. This is the only MacBook model that can use that high of a drive. All the rest are limited to 9.5mm high.
    Here's a video on the installation http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbook_13_unibody/

  • Is there a Hard Drive Size Limitation when using Tiger?

Im going to be setting up a backup server that users can copy their working files to, so Im going to be installing 2 300gb hard drives on a G4 running tiger. I just want to be sure that there is not some hard drive size limitation with tiger.
    Please let me know!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The size limitation is operating system independent. It has to do with the ATA bus on older machines which is discussed in more detail on this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
If you have a G4 tower that is older than the resolving of that limitation, you can add a PCI ATA card which supports larger hard drives, many of which are discussed in more detail on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
I'm not sure about sharing external hard drives, though the size limitation does not apply to new external hard drives purchased since that limitation was resolved with newer ATA buses.

  • I moved my Backups.backupdb folder to a larger hard drive and the transfer went fine with the space taken was correct but when i open my Backups.backupdb folder and browse there is actually no folders or files, the folder shows 280gig used but empty?

So i draged my time machine Backups.backupdb folder from my external hard drive to a larger external hard drive, the folder size was 280gig and took some time to transfer and once transfered i checked the size on the larger drive and the folder size was correct 280 gig. Job done i thought but the next day (stupidly after formating my oringinal drive) checked the Backups.backupdb i see that there is actually no folders or files in the Backups.backupdb??? when transfer the file it shows the 280 gig and names the files being tranfered but i just can't find them. Any clues how i can acces these files?
Thank you in advance for any help and let me know if any specifics are needed

That is not the proper way to do what you want. You need to use Disk Utility to clone the old backup drive to the new backup drive.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new backup drive. Source means the old backup drive.

  • IMovie Project from External Hard Drive not Opening?

    Please help!!
Fairly new to MACs, iMovie and iDVD, I didn't have a clear understanding of how saving iMovie projects worked. Reading various tutorials, I thought I had a clear understanding of how they work. Apparently not with my recent frustration with iMovie.
I created several iMovie Projects but needed more space in order to make more projects for my internship thus I did what I thought was common sense -- get an external hard drive.
I exported iMovie projects into my user account and from there, dragged the saved projects into an external hard drive and then deleted the iMovie projects from my user account.
However, when I needed to retrieve these projects, I simply turned on my hard drive and clicked on them to open. However, whenever I tried opening them, they wouldn't open. Is it because I didn't export them to the hard drive in the first place?
What I don't understand is why iMovie is not opening or recognizing the saved iMovie projects from the external hard drive when the size and kind clearly indicate that it should open with iMovie automatically.
What is the proper way of saving my iMovie projects and events so that I can always have access to whenever I need to open up an old project or simply edit?

Freeing up space on your Mac hard drive in iMovies ’08.
The application iMovie ‘08 has two main libraries displayed in the iMovie window: Events and Projects. Events are the main imports from your video camera, say. These files are big and you have the option to save them on an external hard drive and so iMovie knows to find them there. Projects are your editing instructions like what clips you want and where. The files are small and you save them on your Mac hard drive. They are NOT the clips only signposts where to find them (in Events on your external hard drive). You can move Projects to your external hard drive as back-up but iMovie will not find them there. If you then delete Projects from your Mac, iMovie can no longer make use of them unless you manually export them back into iMovie from your external hard drive. See Apple Article HT1026 iMovie '08: Moving iMovie footage to another drive (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1026). Here the external hard disk is used for moving Projects from one computer to another and, by implication, back to the source computer.
Sharing the projects to iTunes for syncing with Apple TV creates (publishes) movies that take up the same amount of space on your Mac as the source Projects. You can still burn DVDs in iDVD using the iTunes Movies as your Media so provided you have iMovie Projects backed up on your external hard drive you can delete them from your Mac and just use the iTunes Movies (for Apple TV and iDVD). In addition, publishing iMovie Projects in iTunes for syncing to Apple TV results in these files being duplicated in both Movies/iMovies Sharing/iTunes AND in iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies so delete them from here and get even more GBs back! Tell iTunes in Advanced not to save these iTunes published movies anymore in order to stop further duplication ocurring.

  • A135-S2326 replacing hard drive (bad sectors) Need advice and opinions Please

Hi,   (note pic below of my computers actual specs from this morning)
I have a Satellite A135-S2326. It has the max memory at 2GB, it came with 512 and I upgraded to 2GB. It runs Windows Vista Home Edition...
Anyhow, it accidentally fell off my bed a few days ago (darn dogs) and damaged my hard drive. Boot problems, errors, bad sectors, etc. I have tried everything to fix and to no avail. While I am currently using it I know I need to replace the hard drive ASAP before I can't turn it on at all one day... I am now saving all my files and stuff I need off of it to an external drive. The laptop did not come with a windows Vista restore CD so I am using Acronis software to make an image of the hard disc, hopefully it will work and I won't have to purchase my own copy of windows Vista.
    Some questions I have are:
1.) Is it possible to upgrade the hard drive to a faster one / better one when I replace?
The hard drive that came preinstalled is a Hitachi HTS541680J9SA00 80GB, which I believe from spec's documentation is a 5400RPM  Serial- ATA ???
What is the max size I can get for replacement and what is the max RPM, or do I HAVE to use a 5400RPM???
         What do you suggest?
2.) I have a copy of windows XP Professional w/SP2. Is it possible to put this windows XP Pro.w/SP2 on a fresh hard drive in the Satellite A135-S2326? If so, is there a different hard drive that I must have to do that?  Also if an XP install is possible on a new hard drive, which drivers must I have for this laptop when I do it??
3.) And finally, could this laptop handle windows 7 business? Only asking because I can get a VERY cheap copy of windows 7 business from my school...I'm in college at DeVry and can get a copy of Windows 7 delivered to my door in 2 weeks for less then $30.00. So thought that MAY be an option....??? Not sure if my other spec's can handle it though???
4.) What would you suggest I do with the options I have, what is best thing to do in your opinion??
Please see pic below of my actual computers specs from this morning, using Belarc Advisor...
    Thank you in advance
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated

You can use ANY 2.5" SATA hard drive of any size in that system.  I would recommend one of the Western Digital Scorpio BLue's as they are reliable and offer good performance.
If it runs Vista it will run Windows 7.  I would wait a bit before trying Win7 though as Toshiba hasn't released all of the Windows 7 drivers yet.
As for Windows XP, while it is possible to install XP on that system (and quite easily for that matter) Toshiba doesn't provide any of the XP drivers needed to get it to run properly.  You could determine all of the various chipsets the system uses and go to each chipsat manufacturer's support site to see if they provide an XP driver to get it working, but I don't guarantee that they have all of the needed drivers.  If you do decide to go ahead with this let me know and I'll post the directions for installing XP onto a SATA hard drive that doesn't ahve a floppy drive.
Right now your best choice is to replace the old hard drive and restore the system from your Acronis image.  When ALL of the Windows 7 drivers become available you could install it in a dual boot configuration to determine if you prefer it or not.  It is both a step up and a step back from Windows Vista.  Some people will like it while others won't.  Only you will be able to determine which you prefer.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • I have linked my seagate hard drive to my airport extreme but can not seem to find it in finder any ideas

    Hi Help Please
i have just linked an external hard drive to my airport extreme but it does not seem to appear in finder under shared !!!! any ideas

i have plugged the hard drive into a usb router which in turn is plugged to to the AEBS it is visible in airport utility but then can not find it anywhere else!!
First, the drive must be formatted correctly to work at the USB port of the AEBS. That means a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. NTFS will not work.
You need to have a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
Next, you may not have configured the Finder Preferences to display a connected hard drive. Please follow these steps:
o Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen
o Click Finder, then click Preferences
    o Click the General tab
o Under the heading of "Show these itmes on the desktop", make sure you have a check mark next to Connected Servers
Restart both the AirPort Extreme and your Mac
Open Finder and check under the SHARED heading for your AirPort Extreme icon
Click on your AirPort Extreme and a folder will appear in the window to the right representing your hard drive
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop
Hopefully, you are not planning to try to backup files using the Time Machine application, as this is not supported by Apple.

  • Formatting a Hard Drive by Percentage

    Hello All,
I am looking for a solution that will allow me to format multiple hard drives of different sizes by percentage. Does anybody know of a Mac Os X Utility or Termianl command that will allow me to do this? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Michael--
    Look at the diskutil command:
<pre class="command">man diskutil</pre>It has two commands you'd be interested in:
<pre class="command">diskutil info diskN</pre>where "N" is the number of the volume you want to erase. That'll give you the disk's capacity. You'd calculate the partition sizes from that.
Then, look much lower down in the man page where it shows how to partition a disk. You'd do something like this:
<pre class="command">diskutil partitionDisk diskN 3 JournaledHFS+ Part1 20G JournaledHFS+ Part2 30G JournaledHFS+ 100G</pre>You'd need to calculate the three sizes (20G, 30G, and 100G), which I just made up in this example. So it's multiple steps, but you could wrap it in a shell script.
My guess is you're going to have to mount the drive as a Firewire target disk on the main Mac and do the repartitioning from there. I'd be very, very careful, as one misstep could be bad for the Mac you're booted from. Maybe set up one Mac just for this purpose and do a lot of tests.
