Hard Drive Erase Help

I am trying to erase my hard drive and do a clean install. In the process I accidentally made a partition of half my drive as free space. I tried to convert it to journaled but when I click apply nothing happens. I made a Mountain Lion Install USB. I have booted from it and entered Disk Utility. I figured I'd go ahead and erase it and it would give me the free space back. However, when I click on my drive I only have the First Aid and Partition tab. I am posting pictures as to show you exactly what I'm looking at.
The first picture is to show that I don't have all the tabs that I think I should. I should have an Erase tab along with a couple more I think.
The second picture is where I accidentally created a huge partition of free space. When I click apply to make it journaled nothing happens.
What should I do?

I think I know the issue. This is your startup drive. You cannot make changes to it while booted from it. You must use the Recovery HD partition to make the change.
Drive Partition and Format
1. Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
2. When the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Select the partition you don't want at the bottom of the partition map, then click on the Delete [-] button. Click on the Apply button.
4. Now use the triangle gadget in the bottom right corner of the remaining partition and drag it to the bottom to make a single partition. Click on the Apply button.

  • I was given an iBook G4 with the hard drive erased. Is there a free reformat/reboot download available?

I was given an iBook g4 with the hard drive erased. A local Mac tech stated the unit could be reformatted online.  I've not been able to find anything to help. Is there a downloadable program?

You should be able to gain a clue if the sticker with the serial number on it remains intact.
Check out the Apple Knowledge Base article on How to find the Serial Number for that information.
Is there any other path to pursue other than paying bucks to have a local Mac Tech restore it?
Yes, but you will need the Install and Restore discs.
Can another Mac cink with it to retrieve this data?
There is no data to "retrieve," since the hard drive has been erased. What you need is an installation and restoration of the operating system and original applications. This is accomplished with either a compatible full retail install disc (or discs) or the original Install and Restore discs. We are right back to needing to know which exact model it is in order to advise you further.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.

  • I keep getting "error occurred while attempting to import file *******. The disc your are attempting to use is full." I have an external hard drive that I moved files over to, but apparently they're also still on my hard drive? HELP!

I keep getting "error occurred while attempting to import file *******. The disc your are attempting to use is full." I have an external hard drive that I moved files over to, but apparently they're also still on my hard drive? HELP!

So you have backed up the content of the computer's hard drive, too?
That usually is a great idea since it is possible to lose use of the system
if parts of it have accidentally been removed or get over-written, or the
main system files get corrupted, when the hard disk drive gets too full.
If you have not trashed the originals of your created content, that remain
after you made copies on an external hard drive or other device, then
that is what you'd have to do to reclaim the capacity still in use by them.
What are specifications of the hard disk drive? The unused capacity
verses the used, in GB? If the hard drive has less than 15 to 20%
free or unused capacity, you could run into trouble. Mine are 40-50%
unused hard drive space, so ample room is available for automatic
Virtual Memory to use that capacity as temporary swap file space.
This is helpful when the computer could use more physical RAM
memory capacity, but doesn't have it. Or if the RAM is maxxed out
and you can't add any more. Virtual Memory is part of OS X and the
system automatically can use as much as is available, but it is better
to be sure there is plenty of resources available to include chip RAM
as well as unused or free hard drive capacity for use as VM.
If for some reason your files in Trash won't go away when you empty
it, you may have to restart. Be sure you have not included any System
files in the content in the Trash, or the Mac may not start up later on.
You may have to boot the computer from the install-restore OS X DVD
and run Repair Disk from its version of Disk Utility, to be sure it's OK.
I'm guessing that by now you know enough about the vintage system
in the older hardware to figure it out, so I won't write about it now.
In any event... hopefully you can simply trash the files, but check them
carefully, & you may need to remove (copy to archive first) even more.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Hard drive erased iMac G5 X l0.4.11. Help?

Hard drive was erased. I need to find out how to get the original software - mac mail, safari, etc. that came with the computer. Can anyone help?

No disks came with the computer. Same thing with my Lion I am returning. It was already on the computers when purchased.
I think with Lion they just started changing how things work in terms  of relying upon online services and flash drives, and not optical discs, but I am just remembering what I have read here.  Before Lion all computers came with a set of OX discs should you need to re-install the system on the computer. In theory when you sold a computer those discs should go with the computer since they are no good on any other model.  In practice a lot of people seemed to throw them away or lose them, which left subsequent purchasers of the computer (e.g., you) in the lurch when it came to needing to install something.  You either need to buy a set of discs from Apple with the system version that came with the machine, or find a set of black, retail version system discs for a newer version that will also work on a G5 (i.e., 10.5).  If you go the second route do not get fooled into buying a set of grey discs that came with somebody else's machine that they should be keeping for when they sell their machine to a third person.  Those discs likely won't work on yours.
    How are you "returning" Lion?

  • Netbook hard drive erased......HELP!!!!!!!

Netbook hard drive is erased by tech. Manual directions installed Mozilla instead of WinXP. Cannot access my pics, documents, etc.  Tech from Vipre refuses to help.  Can anyone tell me how to re-install OS and have my WinXP back?

    Hi:
The only way you are going to be able to do that is if you can still get a set of recovery disks for your PC.

  • Computer broke, hard drive erased, no iTunes backup. I dont want to lose everything on my iPod. Help?

My computer is broken from a hard drive problem that made my laptop as useless as a potato. I now regret not backing up my iTunes library, because now I will lose everything if I get a new computer and start a new library, because my music is off of CDs that I borrowed. Would be a way to sync to a library without losing my stuff? Please help me.

You may be able to buy a third party program that will do this ( it is not supported by Apple).

    Hello Jacob,
All of these are good questions to have when erasing and installing OS X Yosemite. To answer your first question you would need to boot to either your Recovery HD or through the Recovery USB and follow the steps in the first article below. Either option will get the task accomplished and will install OS X Yosemite. For your final question about restoring from a Time Machine back up, you will see the option to restore when going through the setup process of your Mac. Let me know if the information below is of help or need further assistance.

  • Hard drive erasing issue

Ive been having issues lately with my Intel iMac locking up and freezing on me. Today while logging out the machine locked up, the spinning black circle on the screen stopped so i turned off and back on again.
I disconnected all accesories bar the apple keyboard and mouse and i unplugged the mains for 10 seconds and put it back in. The machine then wouold not boot up but got stuck at the white screen.
I tried pressing the apple key when turning on and i got the mouse pointer but no drive loaded.
I popped in my Leopard CD to boot from that and after waiting AGES it eventually showed the CD to click but nothing else. After a further 15 minutes of waiting the machine eventually booted into the CD and i was able to load up Disk Utility.
My hard drive was showing but when i clicked to verify the drive it gave me an error about invalid node.
When i clicked to repair the disc it said something about invalid sibling.
Im opted to erase the disc as i had all data backed up but when clicking to erase it gets stuck at Partitioning map.
I tried this twice with Journaled and Journaled Case-sensitive and got the same thing.
I then opted to erase but with zero Out Data. The zeroing took about an hour and went fine, but then it comes up with Creating Partitioning Map and gets stuck again.
Im at a lose now, can anyone help as it seems my machine is very poorly

    HI,
Here's how to boot from the install disk and check the hard drive for errors.
    *"about invalid sibling."*
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
*If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.*
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free disk space. Not enough disk space can cause directory corruption.
If Disk Utility cannot repair the disk then your next option is DiskWarrior
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

  • Can't access hard drive. Help please!

I have a MacBook Pro that used Lion. The computer's software crashed and wouldn't start up, so I took it to my local Apple repair store to get it fixed. They said they could pull all my files and data from  my computer, since the hard drive was fine, and that they would reinstall it on my hard drive when they reset my computer. When I got my computer back and when through the initial set up and start up steps, I selected the option to retrieve data from a disk on my computer. My computer spent seven hours just searching for the disk, so I finally decided to ignore the data that's supposedly located somewhere on my computer, and just set the machine up again.
I set up my computer and realized that the Apple repair store reset or reinstalled Snow Leopard instead of Lion. I'm not sure how much a difference the OS makes, but now Migration Assistant can't find the other disk in my hard drive that has all my old data on it.
I'm in a country that doesn't have actual Apple stores or Apple support systems in place, so it'd be great if someone could help me! This post isn't very clear because I couldn't quite tell what the repair people did, so feel free to ask questions to elucidate some of my more confusing or inaccurate statements.

    Reinstall Lion:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
If the above isn't possible because the Recovery HD is no longer there, then you can go to the App Store and re-download Lion (if you purchased it on the App Store.) You will first need to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 by installing Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
I suspect your files are simply on the drive, not on another drive unless they repartitioned the drive and put your files on the new partition. But if they just put your files back on the hard drive there is no need to use Migration Assistant.

  • Hard drive erase?

hello, i installed os x 10.2 on my powermac g3 b/w and not it shows the flashing mac sign and question mark, i put the cd in and i went to disk utility and it does not read my hard drive what do i do? i want to erase it.

The Install CD for Mac OS X has very limited options.
I suggest you go back to Mac OS 9 CD, where the CD is a System/Install CD and other software can be run to help identify the problem.
Apple System profiler will tell you whether the Drive is still there, or has really become invisible. A PRAM Reset may allow missing Hardware to appear again. It is possible your PRAM battery was weak and has died. Mac OS 9 Drive Setup may show your drive in an odd state or with a specific problem.
Did you pull the main AC plug and/or install/remove any Hardware for this install? If yes, the PRAM battery becomes a prime suspect, and the seating of the sound card in its slot should go on the suspect list also.

  • External Hard Drive setup help

I recently posted about my ipod having more memory than my desktop 20g vs 8g. I bought an external hard drive to correct this problem.
Since I couldn't transfer my library correctly - it told me it was synched with another library and I couldn't get by that - I just removed/erased everything (itunes from C drive, E drive, and library) and started over - I didn't have that much loaded on the ipod, so it's a pain but I thought it would be easier.
The problem is when I downloaded itunes again, I made sure the directory said E drive to keep it on the EHD, not the normal C drive, but everything is still showing up on the C drive in the My Music folder.
How do I make it so itunes and my library exist on the EHD and not the C drive? I only have one CD and one purchased song reloaded so if I have to start over again I won't put my head through the wall.
    Thank you.
    Dell   Windows XP

I appreciate your help. I'm going to start from the beginning because I'm still missing something and I'm just about to give up.
I have a 200+ cd collection. I thought it would be really cool to be able to carry the entire collection around with me so I bought a 4th gen ipod (20gig) off of ebay. I had no idea I had to synch it with a computer. I knew you could but I didn't know it required this. I thought I could burn the cds on the ipod, grab it, and go.
My computer is a couple years old and has 8 gigs of memory. I quickly realized that my entire desktop would be full of mp3 files and nothing else. I bought an external hard drive (80 gig) to hold all of the music, plus whatever else I wanted to store. Here the problems begin.
After much aggravation, I uninstalled itunes and started over. I've changed the directory to the E drive, per the article, and consolidated the library. I then deleted all itunes from the C drive - except it won't let me delete the itunes helper folder for some reason.
I imported a cd as a test run. The cd shows up in the library - on both the E drive and the C drive, which means I've done nothing about the memory issue and I now have two separate libraries - E drive is powered and plugged in. In other words, it won't consolidate to the E drive.
A separate issue, my ipod wouldn't synch with the test import cd. I decided to start over with that as well and restored to factory settings. I thought, okay, I'll restore and then synch with the test cd. I'll lose what I already have on there, but I'll just reload. It tells me I have to connect to the external power source to complete the restore, but I did not get a cable for the external power source when I bought it, so now I have to go and get that as well.
Sorry this is so long. This has been a bad idea from the very beginning, I can see that now. I'm out over $200 and I'm even further from my goal than when I started. Is there any way to fix all of this?
    Thank you.
